The Arc, nearly sold it. - Xperia Arc General

I have been having trouble with battery life and performance since day one. The battery was sorted after I roooted it and got rid of the bloatware. But the lag was awful. It only worked smoothly once I had killed everything with task killer - in know with android I should not do it, but it was ssssslllooooooowwwww.
I was so close to the putting it on Ebay and going for a dual core until......
I though it was worth going back to basics, so last night I re-flashed. it, rooted it, cleaned out the bloatware then installed all my apps. Wow what a difference.
Maybe one of my old apps was the cause, maybe the order in did it, but the Arc is silky fast and the battery is still on 80%
My beautiful Arc is not for sale!
Sent from a Galaxy (Tab) far, far away....

People are making a conclusion very quick. I never use taskkiller and the phone is really smooth ad battery life is really great.
Did you restore an app with titanium backup or something like that? because that can give sometimes problems to

I just installed everything from scratch.
Up until the re-flash I was waiting 5 secs for the SMS app to start and nearly 10 secs for the phone app. Even clicking on the app list meant that the icons on the home screens had to re-load every time (4secs)
Sent from a Galaxy (Tab) far, far away....

that's really slow for me it's smooth and fast. You had a very weird problem. good to hear you got it fixed

I blamed it on the Arc Launcher and TimeScape in my case, and boy was I right. Using LauncherPro Plus now and it's smooth as silk, uninstalled SE Home and TimeScape + Extensions and now everything is fine. After ~5/6 Hours of sleep it was still at 99% which was a big shocker for me

This is with SE Launcher easily possible as well. The problem is that the screen is hoging most battery so if the screen is off, battery drains really slow

Just curious how you check the battery drainage when your screen is off :lol
Glad you so solved it. I also did the same after a week after bootlooping, and it really improved for some reason...

Does everyone think that the the stock launcher is causing perf problems? I love the stock media widgets.. and don't really want to have to trade them to get smoooooothness...!!

I used the stock launcher for 2 weeks (without any of the widgets) and had no problems with it at all. I switched to ADW EX cause i got bored of the same side to side scrolling. I miss the design of the folders and "carded background" app drawer design of the stock launcher though. I had no problems with smoothness or battery life..have about 160mb free at all times.

the only stock widget i like is the photo widget...the rest its just eye candy..timesquare suck ass ..click on a twitter or fb comment and it take u to the websites.. should open either twitter app or fb app ... the only time i get slow performance is in the late afternoon after a hardcore day of texting and picture messaging but if i chill normally all day phone snappy

After my flash, clear out and install, the Quadrant score is 1692. I doubt if it would have scored 600 before.

Did you use SEUS or flashtool and the ROM unbranded ? Mine is really smooth but 30% battery drain in one night.
Also what's the différence between "sync background" and "sync data all time " in settings ? Sorry for label mine is in french so i don't know how they call on your phone but it is in sync section.

Hows your standby life or how many days can you get without charging?

I used accused SEUS then gingerbreak.
I put it on charge every night, so not sure how many days it will last, but most likely it would be 1.5-2 days with normal use. Before it would not last until the evening.
Sent from a Galaxy (Tab) far, far away....

If I use it regularly then my battery also runs out by the evening, though I have to agree with timescape not being that optimal... the launcherpro Widgets are better actually for social networks... though if it wasn't the stock launcher's fault, why is performance for me top notch now after uninstalling it?
since I'm on bin4ry's system.img, I can't blame Gingerbreak and also haven't used seus yet, still eagerly awaiting cm7

Any lag you have has NOTHING to do with SE launcher or Timescape.
It may be the apps. Mine is over 1,5 months old with stock launcher and timescape and is super smooth.

Well... I have about the same apps as I did before, and now it doesn't lag, so dunno. But seriously I think Launcherpro is better anyways, so it's not a big loss. Battery life is excellent for me though, with Green Power Premium and a lot of texting, and some gaming

well it's not the number of apps but rather quality of some of them.

I do know that, therefore I said the same and not the same number. Anyways, there are quite large games without app2sd on my internal memory, some lag could also be induced by those

Archos 101 and 2.2 starting to dislike even more

The more I use this.. the More i realize that Archos needs some majoy fixes coming soon.. The performance on Android 2.2 is actually pretty bad. I think 2.1 ran better.. I can't do more than 2 tabs at a time in the browser. if I do 3 I get mad lag and freezing and often leads to complete freeze if one has flash on it.. Last night it rebooted twice on me after freezing on simple flash sites like Engadget.. My G1 ran better to be honest. Yea it didn't have flash. but my G1 ran better.
At first I was liking 2.2 and it seemed pretty good. but constantly killing tasks trying to keep performance good is getting old. yea yea 256mb ram. People keep saying this, but the Original Droid runs great compared to this. They have pretty similar hardware.. I sure hope root, and a custom rom comes out soon, that or Archos updates 2.2 and actually ENABLES the JIT Compiler and other things this time. cuz performance is slower on 2.2 than on 2.1
I wanna keep this, but I don't at the same time. lol
From what some people with insider information are saying, there will be an update soon. I think they released froyo because they said they would and not because they thought it was perfect. Still have hope something good is coming. Actually I find that the device runs quite ok even though I have to use the task killer very often.
Sent from my A70S using Tapatalk
LauncherPro completely eliminated the response lag for me, and I haven't needed to run a kill since I installed it.
There are only two important settings to optimize performance in the Menu->Preferences. In the General Setting, check "Keep in memory". In the Advanced Settings->Memory Usage Settings, set the 'Memory usage preset' to 'High'.
The device is now faster than it was in 2.1. Archos should be shipping this launcher instead of the default (or properly tune the default launcher).

Agreed I am using ADW Launcher and it is now buttery smooth. - Edit: It completed froze up on me several times since then and I have since removed ADW, it was great for responsiveness and scrolling but it was eating memory like crazy.

i noticed major issues with my archos 28 and 43.the problem was because i installed the Google market from archos fans.its cool and all but i erased it and restored them.they ran near perfect.with market installed i had battery issues and touchscreen issues.if you have market installed and your device is acting up,get rid of market and maybe try again.

I have since swiched to Zeam Launcher and I love the drawer, and have not had to kill any processes yet. I may have found a winner!
Try doing a full wipe and reinstall. I was having charging issues and did the full wipe and it not only fixed my charging issue, but it sped the whole thing up (even w/out z4root) ad its been far more stable too.
It does that for me too. Much faster and smoother after a full wipe. Runs perfect now with very rare issues of freezing... I was having much more issues beforehand, even z4root not rooting (Which might have been because of app2sd).
All my apps are on the tiny 300MB space now...
Yup me too. Ut is really snappy without even being rooted.
Did a quadrant without root - got 860.
Rooted - 1019.
No lag and no issues on my 70.

with the new beta firmware the quadrant result is up for 25 %
Ive got the 101 with 2.2 but Im getting ready to sell it off. Im just not happy with it and even IF custom ROMs and perm rooting happens, the limitation of the app storage and 256 RAM is a killer for me. I thought it would perform ok and for some I guess it does but it isnt living up to me standards.
Maybe the G-Tab or Adam will be better
Yea im not sure what i think anymore. I was loving it for a day or 2.
Ive been running LP n it made scrolling better, but thats all. I feel like overall stock is better.
ive been having even more major problems after writing that post. Now archos tv out, music, and video widgets all crash on startup and FC if i try to open them. It has froze completely 4 times tonight. Restarted 3 on its own. Browser cant handle more than 2 tabs.. i just wiped my device back to stock once again. For now things seem pretty good. Ill give it a few days stock n see. But been smooth the last hour or so
Im seriously considering selling it and getting a like new Galaxy Tab. The G was decent, and the N Ink is unproven n not even shown its hardware in a while.. but i have high hopes. Well see. I do agree froyo was not ready n needs some serious work. Archos needs a update asap

Great news! Hopefully it is working at least as good as the 1.0.84 (no SMB and WPA2 wifi issues)
Issues keeping me from loving it (I think these are all pretty common):
No access to the files on my WHS except via UPnP (SMB Folder Empty issue)
Graphical lock no longer shows green lines (it does unlock though)
WIFI occasionally quits until I stop/restart it
Flash is slower than dirt and causes Dolphin HD to FC a lot (I ended up uninstalling flash)
General lagginess unless I constantly kill tasks
WHS seems to have an authorisation problem, as with every linux box smb seems to work flawlessly ( as with my buffalo Mini ).
As there is no official Flash you can only have one that was designed for another device, so that explains a little.
I personaly have only seen the remark from archos that they have a hw accelerated version in a certification process by adobe.
And the rest might be already fixed, if i would know anything or could talk about it.

Yeah, the issue is that Archos doesn't give you a way to specify the username/password combination to use to connect to the SMB server. I bet if I turned on guest access to my WHS it would work, but I'd prefer not to do that...

Poor performance

Hi,
My partner picked up an arc in the week, and we have both noticed the performance is rather poor on occassion. Sometimes loading an app will take ages (10secs), or even the app drawer will take a long time to open or to exit back to the home screen.
We also had a low memory warning from tasked and upon checking there was only 16mb free with nothing obvious taking up the resources.
Has anyone else noticed this? Firmware version is 3.0.A.2.184
Did you try to do factory reset? this helped for some people. My arc is really fast and everything works great.
with low memory you mean the internal storage? this happens if you installed to many apps. I always move games to the SD this saves some memory

Don't really want to do a factory reset a few days after getting it (I know it might help, but it's more the principle...)
Most the of time it feels pretty snappy, but every so often it just seems to lag for a while.
As for low memory, I was referring to RAM not storage. Internal storage has something like 170mb free, but RAM seems to be constantly running with ~60mb free and dips down to <20mb even with not much running.
The only things that should be running in the background are twitter, facebook and Wordsfree.
i have degraded performance though not that worse, i suspect mine was caused by running background app like yahoo messenger, facebook, g talk and possibly go weather.
also change home to go launcher. this may not be correct, but with default se launcher certain app get killed faster (maps). also opera mobile contents somehow get purged a lot with go launcher (note : this may not be true).
currently available ram drop to 32 or less in hours while previously it took days (or maybe never) to drop below 100 mb ram. sigh..

Performance on Go Launcher was woeful for me, but with the SE launcher and Launcher Pro it seems fine, well aside from the issues in the OP anyhow.
sigh, se default screen protector and input keyboard are slippery. to op, i see that only facebook is what we have in common.
i've completely log out and remove fb data but still it run in the background. any advice to stop it from running (non rooted phone please)?
does anyone know if freeze -ing app stop it from loading or just froze it in memory?
thanks for your input on go launcher and quick reply.
I'm always like around 150MB free RAM, i don't use any kind of task killer nor do i kill anyting. there are 20 apps running right now. The phone can lag when syncing (you see the syncing icon then) but in overall it works really smooth.
I think there is something really messed up. i think you will be beter off with factory reset. if you have root you can use titanium backup.
Funny how all of us jump in saying do.a factory reset or reinstall this or is got to be a app running in the background lol. Phone is beautiful and all but factory ROM is crap! I installed the NAG rom and seems to be helping a bit but yes stock launcher lags crazy. I hate when u have to do so much **** to a phone to make it run better. That would be us but a average person that buys this phone for daily use with no idea of RAM or a different launcher would say **** this phone. To slow. Lol. I love the camera that's why I'm putting up with this. I have two lines tho. Using a Thunderbolt too. Yes it is faster. Snappier.

hmm lets see.. do you have timescape ui on? if too many accounts are synced into the timescape it can cause lag...
One of the programs that's running in background might be messing up. Go to running service and kill all the custom applications (NOT DEFAULT ONES) then see how it works. Less than 20MB RAM will cause performance issues. Uninstall software that you don't use much. Uninstall task killer software if you have one. I find that unstable. If that didn't do the trick then as said before Factory reset would be a best option.

srry but i don't agree with this. A lot of people used my phone to see how it was before we had root. even iphone4 users said that this was snappy phone. i;m with tasgr86 on this one. don't over react. The phone can slow down when syncing and this happens with all android phones.
if you read here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1077292 you will see that factory reset can do wonders.
I have 2 Arc, My 2 bro have also Arc. None of my bro visits mobile site or XDA to get knowledge about phone, but they have no what so ever problem with Arc. One of them came from iPhone & one from Galaxy S.. Phone is smoot, no lag & very fast...
I'm watching this forum for a long time, and it's amazing how much the community split up - 80% of users love the phone and have no problem with it, while 20% moan about performance and etc.
**** happens; you maybe got a phone with faulty hardware, or something else, w/e - do a factory reset before crying how crap the phone is, common sense really.
My phone doesn't lag or does the browser and ram always sits over 100mb
I just rebooted my device after 40 days of continuous usage.

he didnt factory reset,,, he re installed the rom... i did the same .. i still have to reboot at least once a day.. phone cant handle me.. i text a lot .pictures taken and web and also google music.. gets laggy after a few hours .. this is not my first or second android phone .. there is something on the ARC that eats memory and wont free it up its like the phone performer slowly die....and the only way to revive it is with a reboot .. still love it tho.... dont mind rebooting once daily
have to agree that something is definitely leaking memory, which only seems recoverable by a proper reboot.. (using the button on the top and not reboot widget..)
trying to figure out what is causing it isn't proving to be a simple task..

I had a similar issue and as much as it might be against your prinicples, I did a factory reset and the phone is now fine. It's much easier to flash an android phone as all my contacts are synced with my google account, most of the apps back up their settings to the SD card and all of the apps you've bought you just redownload from the marketplace, hell google even have my wpa key to get on my wifi. If you aren't prepared to reflash then learn to live with the lag but I think you would find it will help a lot
just a thought, perhaps browser cache put a lot of strain on flash chip? i know people said latency/fragmentation is not an issue on them, but again i've seen many slow down/unresponsiveness on worse scenario.

What's the point if upgrading to 2.34 right now?

I am a serial ROM junkie BUT I am still in the sidelines on this one. Having read through most of the posts I still can't see what going to the beta Gingerbread achieves. Does it do anything better than the stock 2.2 which is so stable?

I feel the same way. My atrix is my only phone so I will just watch here with interest but wait for Motorola to do it's thing....I hope.
Of course it is fun to play with, but I have gone back to 1.83. It is my only phone and the rom made for Hong Kong phones is just to buggy for every day use IMHO. They have made great progress in removing a lot of the bugs, but it is just not ready for prime time yet. If I had a backup phone I would be all over it, but as it will be coming soon I believe. I can wait.
It's been my daily driver since day one and no real complaints especially with navalynt's fixes and eye candies rolled into a flashable zip. There's a few things it does that I like. I've been using 2.3.4 since it was released here with tutorials on how to install. I used _unknown's method. I have seen no real benefits, other than having an unlocked bootloader and a recovery I can boot into anytime I want. However IMO it is stable enough to use daily... battery life is about the same, and my phones been on with no restarts for a little over 48 hrs. The only way to appreciate all the work these devs have been doing is to try it out yourself
And I would like to thank xda for hosting a forum with an endless amount of useful knowledge for all the smart phones I've had in the last 2-3 years.

Just want to know, is any of the software improved / faster or better?

Speed test wise is a bit better but this thing is such a beast its hard to see it. Camera app had a real overhaul and I love it! Battery, like above poster , seems the same. Software being gingerbread is more about cosmetics and I'm very happy in that regard ... it's pretty sexy I'm back to using launcher pro + for now but the moto-blur UI looks great. So good in fact I just started using LP+ recently. That's a big statement being as I slapped gingerblur P-ROM on the day I purchased the ATRIX!

Pretty much this for me, if they get the fingerprint scanner working I'll be a happy camper
the only bug i have noticied with the phone is that the FP scanner doesn't work, and the FFC appears sideways (but is normal when videochatting to the person on the other end).
the build is noticeably faster and smoother for me for animations, especially the 3d-cube and cylindrical app transitions on Go Launcher EX. the screen transitions for open-close and vertical-horizontal are pretty nice too since froyo lacks them. once i installed all the 'fixes' that devs have come up with, i see no reason to go back to Froyo, as I can live without the FP scanner for now, and videochatting with the FFC is fine. oh yeah, and i freakin LOVE the CRT shutoff animation.
oh yeah, and the new battery use meter system is pretty freakin' cool.
I moved back to 2.2.1 from 2.3.4 since I had horrible battery life on the HKTW 2.3.4 beta build! Other than that, I have to say it is way faster and smoother than 2.2.1!
speed, battery life, those were arbitrarily the same for me..
two of my fav noticeable improvements are:
1.) ability to clear notifications from your bar one by one instead of having to clear them all.
2.) being able to boot straight into CWM w/o a charger
3.) finally fixed the slow market download speeds!!!
2.3.4 is insanely fast compared to stock. Once you take the tome to fix the small bugs it's a really good everyday rom.
On 2.3.4 I get almost the same battery life with push email and no battery conservation as I did in 2.2.2 with everything turned off. There is no wakeup lag or random pauses like before. At first it seemed like it drained battery but After a couple days when my battery had calibrated itself this were normal.
So far the only bugs I have are the funky front facing camera and I can't sync my exchange account.nmy phone no longer heats up as much as before.
I am running launcher pro and havent disable blur yet and it's super fast. For comparison 2.2.2 with launcher pro and no blur was still slow.
It's completely changed my views of the Atrix, except for the screen.

They did indeed. When I'm on wifi now at home I get full 1.5 MB a second market download speeds where as before I swore it never went above 250-300 kb / sec. So far the only bugs I have are the funky front facing camera and I can't sync my exchange account.nmy phone no longer heats up as much as before...

No Exchange syncing = one less push email account. That's probably why battery life seems the same for you. Mine is noticeably worse.
Unless you didn't use Exchange push in 2.2.2, in which case forget this post.

I didn't use exchange or gmail push, or even fetch in 2.2
Right now my battery is 10% lower at the end of my work night following my same usage habits. 2.3.4 seems to be much more efficient with memory management as well.
I can do without fingerprint scanner and the front facing camera, this ROM is definitely better than 2.2 froyo. Now I feel like I own a dual core phone.I am unlocked and can't wait to flash an American optimized ROM!

[Vote] JB update? Worth it?

A straightforward topic
Vote Yes if you think the JB update for razr i is worth updating to and No if it isn't and you want to downgrade back to ICS
Was going to ask exactly the same question....
Was going to ask exactly the same question, as the update prompt just showed up on mine 2 hours ago...
At the moment I am holding... and not updating... don't really see any advantage in jelly bean... i wouldn't be using google now anyway...
... and I don't wanna loose "fm radio" and "sleep mode"
Same here, I actually think it might be better staying on ICS but let's see what the JB persons have to say

I personally don't think it is worth it -- however I did update to look for differences in battery life.
I see the cpu governor chosen by motorola to be laggier on some tasks. But the UI seems more fluid because of project butter. And I do not use google now because of the massive battery consumption.
The best feature which I do look is the improved keyboard and a better voice to text recognition, it is almost real-time. That is enough for my personal use of the device.
But if your usage requires more the following functions that you would loose such as FM radio and sleep mode as mentioned above then I would hold the upgrade until we start seeing other ROMs.
Thats great but you didn't mention if overall the battery life is a lot better or worse in JB?

My RAZR i is so much more buttery smooth, and Google Now is worth it by itself. I installed the 4.2 launcher from the Nexus 4 image and its a great match with 4.1.2

Mine. I think it was deactivated...
I like the Jelly Bean Update. First i was very happy about Google Now but in all honesty, disable it, burn it, kill it with everything you have.
My logs:
ICS, Display on 4hrs, Battery 20%
ICS, Display on 3hrs, Battery 50%
ICS, Display on 5hrs, Battery 29% (best by far)
So it varied a bit, although battery life improved in the last month somehow. Don't know, i switched some apps and deleted some .. A common value was that i had around 50% battery after ~2,5hrs.
Google Now:
JB, GN on, Display on 3,5hrs, Battery 12%
.. whatever, i didn't make that much screenshots of it. Let's just say that with 2hrs display on time i had about 35-40% battery.
I disabled Google Now yesterday and almost instantly i saw the graph flat out. At the moment i have 57% battery left with 2hrs 20mins display on time which could be a small improvement over ICS.
What i like about the update:
- Softkey bar is now transparent with LWP and even in other launchers, makes screen finally appear in it's real size and not cut-off
--> i could finally switch to Nova without any drawbacks, stock launcher froze widgets in ICS and scrolling to the right only was annoying
- Performs much better on homescreens
- stock JB softkeys look much better, stock animations in it.. yeah, i love it
- disable the stupid shutter sound (try to make a photo of the blackboard in an university.. twice i forgot to cover the speaker, it's the look of shame for a stupid phone you have on your face after taking it)
- Finally my Widgetsoid quicksettings bar stays where it's by standard in every other phone
Some more i already forgot
What i dislike:
Once google now is deactivated, nothing
somehow Poweramp kills its database every time and stops playing songs after 2-3mins .. This was the app i paid most for until now
It was overall more an update that made the phone work more the way it should. At least i have the expression, i think not everyone profits from the quicksettings and Nova launcher. Don't expect that your phone behaves completely different, you'll be disappointed by the more or less minor changes.
Well i really prefer Jb a lot!
Its so fast!! And i like the ui!
More than Ics,
On Jb theres is not lag anymore!

funny how before jb was released people would be desperate to install it and now that it has been released, people are deciding not to install it.

Updated yesterday
YES
Not bothered about the lack of FM, never use it. I did use sleep mode a lot, buit I'll messa round with Smart Actions and get something good enough.
It's a lot smoother. When I first logged on here someone pointed out the stuttering in animation when zooming out of the home screen, which once noticed is impossible to ignore! That's gone and animations and transitions are a lot smoother.
Icons look tighter which is nice, although the digital clock is now a little squatter (not the widget, the lock screen).
Haven't used Google Now really, looking at how it can kill battery I doubt I will.
Dictionary and typing looks better. It doesn't automatically add a space after a word now until you start the next word, which although a little thing helps those of us who punctuate correctly; before hand I'd be having to delete the space to insert a comma or whatever. Takes some getting used to but a lot better.
But best of all the word 'Messages' now apopears complete and not cut off when displayed beneath the icon!!
Early days, only updated last night, but first impressions are it tweaks the little annoyances out of the phone, so gets my vote :good:
Faster home screens and no lag? Yeah right. In my case swiping home screens lags substantially more after the JB update, not to mention even worse lags on waking up. Looks to me like the new CPU governor is responsible, will have to root and modify settings to return the performance back.

In my case it's really fluent, perhaps the best android update that I have seen so far (and I had a G1 with the very first built of android) this OS feels really mature now.

No doubt it's fluid comparing to G1 But in my personal experience with Razr i, the fastest firmware was the one I bought the phone with. Two consecutive updates consecutively degraded the performance.

Lag problem possibly solved for me

Looks like facebook messenger is the problem
If anyone here is dubious or HATES the offical somewhat intrusive Facebook app should check this out
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-facebook-browser-t2864561
A very well made minimal Facebook brower app - that does away with alot of crap, give it a try :good:
What drew you to this conclusion?
I reset my phone using safe mode everything was uninstalled as soon as I installed messenger lag was back
Funny how everyone complains about lag but I don't have any on my device ... Guess I'm the lucky one
2SHAYNEZ
I have to say I read this post thinking man what a daft suggestion. Turns out uninstalled messenger. Can't get the phone to lag at all.....before I was getting redraw on the homescreen everytime and laggy scrolling always!
Nothing improved. :/
Ya, I don't get the whole complaining of the lag issue. I'm sure it's installed apps that they keep sync on all the time.
I removed the stock keyboard and launcher and it's running as smooth as can be.
Well I was really surprised, my Nexus 5 is massively fast in comparison. Having a said that since removing messenger it's easily as fast as my Nexus if not faster.

Of course! I've been using Nexus devices exclusively for a good while for this reason but just loved the G3 too much!
