Has anyone tried to change the boot animation by replacing the existing one with the stock one that comes with the Xoom( just swapping out the .zip file)? Since we have no access to Recovery I was thinking this would be a great way to change or even possibly theme( like extracting the apk then overwriting it) this device. Any thoughts?

I just loaded SyndicateROM and wanted to flash the stock Sprint boot animation back onto my phone, so I found this thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=951184
And tried using the attached file ("epic_stock_boot.zip") and flashing it in CWM, and it successfully removed the ACS boot animation, but it then boots immediately to the phone without displaying the bootanimation or the sound. I am curious as to if I am doing anything wrong. Do I need to mount /system in CWM before flashing? Is there an alternative to do this other than flashing the .zip file, for example, can I adb push/Root Explorer push the .qmg files to a certain folder in /system? Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hi, I have a GT-19505 using Omega ROM and faux123 kernel and I am unable to change the boot animation on my rooted phone.
I have tried copying bootanimation.zip to both system/media and data/local and the animation is still the Omega spinning disc, I have also ensured that the file has correct permissions using root explorer and I have tried to flash the file using TWRP (which failed). I would greatly appreciate it if anyone can provide any insight into this matter as it is like the only thing left I have to customise on my phone lol.
Thanks
I have just installed quarx' experimental 3.0 nightly on a defy+, which is working, but I can't access recovery any more. Entering recovery from the red screen by using the menu button causes the phone to restart. Resetting using stock recovery doesn't help.
Is there a way to replace the recovery from either adb, the terminal, or by using some app? Is it a matter of dd'ing an image from either update_recovery.zip or the rom over /dev/block/mmcblk1boot1 (or some other device)? If so which file - ramdisk-recovery from update_recovery looks promising.
Is there a better way to recover from a failed recovery? I did install update_recovery.zip, and reboot to it before flashing - I could have done something wrong there.
Of course, if this isn't possible, then there is always .sdf-ing it back to a stock and trying again.
Just replace the bootmenu folder in system with the one from the zip. Don't dd any images, because our custom kernel runs via kexec, not by regular booting

Thanks for that. I tried that, and found something interesting - the files at /system/bootmenu/2ndboot don't seem to be used - the firmware does not have a bootmenu folder - everything is in /system/bootstrap. I installed on this phone by flashing the sbf, rooting and installing 2ndInit, installing cm10, then update-recovery, then cm11, if it helps.
I am certainly loading the files in /system/bootstrap. I put '$BB_STATIC echo 64 > /sys/class/leds/[red,green,blue]/brightness' commands into bootstrap/scripts/recovery.sh, and the light cam on and changed color as it should, until it reached the line "./hbootuser ./hboot_recovery.cfg". It did not get past that.
Any assistance would be a help. As you can see, I like digging into things like this.
Edit: Fixed! I downloaded one of the other, older files, extracted the zImage and ramdisk-recovery, and put them into /system/bootstrap/2nd-boot as zImage-recovery and ramdisk-recovery. Then I edited hboot_recovery.cfg to make sure it was pointing at these files, and recovery now works.
Mind you, i might have just messed it up with flashing gapps......
Hi guys,
I tried to install a custom boot animation onto my i9505 running CM12 and stupidly downloaded and installed the wrong resolution boot animation. Now when I reboot the Samsung logo shows up fine then the phone goes black for a while and boots up normally so there's no huge issue but I was wondering how I could recover the original CM boot animation/any animation at all. Have tried to flash a correct boot animation and tried to install it through system/media and changing permissions but still nothing seems to recover it. Any help on this is greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance,
Rohan
Here you go. This is the default Cyanogenmod boot animation that I extracted from my copy of AntaresOne's optimized CM12.1. Copy it over to system/media and let it overwrite the bugged one, then reboot.
If that boot animation is too plain for you, I have one in my signature that works.

Strephon, thank you very much for taking the time out to extract the boot animation from CM! Much appreciated. By overwrite I assume you just mean flash the zip through custom recovery or is there something else I should do?
Use a file explorer and physically copy it from your download location to /system/media.

Didn't work. Not quite sure what I've done ??? but I do appreciate your time and effort with this Strephon.
No problem. It didn't work because I forgot to tell you one important step. You have to set the permissions for the file to rw-r--r-- for Android to see it. The CM12 file manager should be able to do that.
With my new found root powers I first decided to jump into customizing the boot animation. I know I should have done a full backup with TWRP beforehand but my backup with a boot animation switcher app failed when changing the boot animation. It essentially corrupted the original bootanimation.zip. Could anyone get the original file from /system/media (my original had only the Aquos logo; no Sprint or BoostMobile animations like the other archives in that folder) and upload it somewhere (Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.)? Thanks.
