Ever since I downloaded the new update (DI18) this morning, I cannot get good download speeds, but my upload speeds have greatly increased. Any ideas? Here is some proof...If someone could give me a clue of what the problem could be, that would be great.
I tried to insert the pictures of speedtest.net results, but since I'm new, it won't let me.
I've had crazy results like 97kbps down and 702kbps up?!?
my download has remained the same while the upload increased
Between 900 and 1200 down and 400 to 700 up depending on signal strength. I'm in the western suburbs of Chicago.
Sent from my Epic 4g
I had same problem, I rebooted the phone and all seems fixed now
Sent from my Epic 4G
All seems normal after OTA update, loving the increased upload speeds.
I was getting like 650s up and about the same or worse down. Very laggy net and things would time out frequently. 600 or 700 was the best down I could get even with full signal strength. I flashed the previous release and all went back to normal. Up was between 100 to 200 and down was 1.5 or better. I guess I prefer better down. I guess if when it gets pushed to me officially, and things act like that, I will go back to 06. Really looking forward to 2.2 and the improvements it offers.
Downstream speeds are exactly the same or better for me. My update was pushed OTA. Is everyone waiting for the GPS to resolve completely before testing? It seems to affect speed, this happened with my Evo, and seems to still be the case with the Epic.
Right now I'm getting 6.24 mpbs download and 1.13 upload on 4g is that good?

Dude why are you complaining this is by farrrr the best phone right now....and a few months down in developement imagine how much better it will be i still am in awwww with a 2.1 rom if you have so many complains take your phone back.
Didn't see any slow download speeds on my 3g are >1000 and uploads >150. So I'm fine over here. Go outside or somthing, this could deal with your location.
And even before this update my phone perfformed fine on all radios.(less upload of course)

The guy asked a question.
My downloads since the update here at home on 3g has never been above 400k/sec
That's pretty weak isnt it?
Also my uploads since the fix have ALWAYS been faster! Which is neat, but man.
hmm maybe something is wrong with your phone bro if your getting that on 3g..didnt know it was that low

Looks like I'm not the only one.
The pictures posted in this thread are exactly like what I'm seeing.

I just did a test w two bars of 3 g and dl speed was 400 and up speed 70 ? On wifi it was 600 dl and 147 up the update made my phone slower is that possible wtf
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I just downloaded the speedtest net version and
got 550 dl and 250 upp and wifi 680d 450up
I get 500-1000 down consistently and up to 700 at times up.
I do remember pre update going over 1000 down was very common and pushing 2000 wasn't out of the question either.
While not complaining my downstream did take a hit but with the nature of networks and cell towers it could simply be not phone related. If it's the same a few weeks or so from now I would consider it phone related. (Unless someone can run side by side tests with another phone). 4G is still blazing fast though.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I'm just wondering. Are you noticing slower download speeds or are you just going by the speed test programs?
You can tell the difference in just browsing. There used to be a not so dramatic difference between 3g down and 4g down. At work. 2000 down on 3g wasn't uncommon at all.. I get full bars here all day long on 3g. Just running a speed test on a server 12 miles away I got 649 down with full strength. Tried different server, the same. At home the results are worse. So yeah you can notice the difference between 500-1000 down(average is 700 with good signal) and 1000-2000 down without speed tests.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Let me add also. Speed tests down before the update the needle on the meter was fluid and smooth in movement. Now it seems to be rigid and make sudden jerky shifts in speed like there is some kind of random packet lose.

I'm usually that guy that rolls his eyes at crying about 2.2 being released. I make jokes about your phone not automatically dispensing cash after you update it. I tell people to sit on it, it isn't that big of a deal.
Well I take it all back.
I've been running DK28 since it is was available on google (update zip). I switched to various versions of Bonsai, I've run TrulyEpic. I've been pleased with all of them.
The only problem I really have had was on all DK28 based installs, I end up with messaging locking up every 20 or so texts, and it will stick at Sending... until I reboot the phone, then it will send the queue after 45 seconds or so. No big deal really, just a nuisance, and I've seen many others with the issue.
Well two days ago I started getting the 'no audio' phone calls where you have to speakerphone on/off to hear anything. That I can't deal with. I know several have had it happen, but that is just something that can severely affect my productivity and must be stopped.
After fooling around with reflashes a bit I decided to go back to stock(ish). I odin'd back to DI18.
I figured CWM2.5, get my root explorer going again, organize everything how I want and just sit tight until we go official. Learned my fav GTG doesn't work correctly with 2.1; no problem, we'll use LauncherPro and suck it up some more. So I get everything organized how I like it and ready to go.
Crap this sucks. 2.2 really is nicer. Everything is more fluid. Menus are more welcoming in appearance. There is significantly less jitters moving between apps (I'm looking at you, Market). USB connectivity issues are resolved (I totally forgot how finicky 2.1 was with USB cord connecting).
And benchmarks? Yeah forget about them, the difference is depressing.
So yeah, sorry. We really do deserve 2.2 on this phone. It'd just been so long I forgot I'm still keeping 2.1 on it for now... possibly until update (2012 is just around the corner). I thought it might be nice to have a back-and-forth perspective for a change, as I haven't seen many people go back to 2.1 with intention of staying.
TL;DR:
Went back to 2.1
Misses 2.2
Still TL;DR:
Whaaaaaaa!
People keep saying 2.2 is faster. I've put 2 epics side by side one with DI18 one with DK28. Froyo is slower, not by a little, by a lot. Some small things operate a little faster, but in whole the entire user interaction is slower than eclair. I've tried several times, even swapped what phones had what OS, results never changed.
I went back to 2.1 and also think it is faster and a lot quicker to response. 2.2 seemed pretty sluggish to me. The 2.2 Roms were nice but I did not like Ext 4 so I just reverted back to 2.1

See that's strange because I went back and forth several times for about 3 hours last night making comparisons and on mine, it was just the opposite :/
Agreed, there are lots of little things in Froyo that are faster (transitions and stuff), but those I discount because they aren't really indicative of the speed of the phone so much as the way the transition is designed to appear.
Over all though, much less lag between applications on 2.2... the Market being one of the worst to open showing obvious jitters etc.
Funny as it is, I can live with that stuff; the things that really bother me are the totally superfluous things like cosmetics and the simplicity of sticking a usb cable in and the phone figuring out what I want to do on it's own and not asking me to unplug it, change a setting, replug it, etc.
Anywho.... I'll see how long I stick it out
I've been back on stock for almost a week now after trying various ROMs, and I've decided to tough it out until an official update if one comes at all. It's not a bad experience at all for me.
been running Baked Snack 1.6(DI18) over here...... crazy fast! especially on wifi. i like the idea of building a house on a good foundation, so sticking with DI18 for now.
DK28 is a POS... My 2.1 run faster and smoother then any DK28 I've tried... IMO developers should save their energy till we get the official release.
Quantum is nice and fast I got a live wallpaper and it's doing well
I keep switching back and forth between 2.1 and 2.2 Nebula with Ext4 and I have to say that overall, 2.1 with xtreme kernal and Syndicate is just as fast with great battery than the froyo roms. Although Nebula is performing great for me and I do have the occasional glitch from time to time, I think I'm gonna roll with it at least for another week

Quantum is buggy. Probably not the developers fault, as most of the issues are DK28, but I have been running Quantum 2.7 since it came out and I certainly wouldn't use the words "nice" or "fast" to describe it. Also, some of the bugs are absolutely not DK28. I am trying to be very careful not to insult the developer, but the issues that his rom has makes me want to do awful things to my phone sometimes.
I know how you feel OP. I can barely stand using my Epic anymore cause of the sickness it causes. I feel I've been cheated by just buying the phone, thinking that it was gonna be updated with some sort of quickness. It's just depressing knowing that when you spend that much money and are stuck behind 2 O/S upgrades. Hopefully we will get something soon, but I'm not holding my breath.

The way people are around here the last month or so, I'm not sure if that first sentence is sincerity or sarcasm
I actually had no care or consideration for 2.2 when I bought the phone. Wasn't the least of my concerns. I just wanted the newest Sprint smartphone, and I couldn't use an Evo because A) needed a slide out keyboard for certain things that the popup wouldn't work and B) Evos are far more moisture sensitive due to their construction and it wouldn't have lasted a week for me.
Having tried 2.2 out though, it just feels more natural to me. Everyone is back and forth on the speed thing, and that really isn't it for me. 2.2 feels more natural in a lot of respects, both in form and function where 2.1 feels more half-completed. Like comparing a spiral staircase to an aluminum ladder.
My point was that it really does, as far as feeling like a completed unit, -make- the phone. There are glitches etc that aren't part of my consideration as I expect them to be Beta related. No doubt 2.1 is more solid and probably faster at some things than others... speed isn't really an issue for me unless you count the App lag and jitters... they suck.
But yeah, now that i've done side-by-sides of it, 2.2 (in a completed non Beta state) really is what the phone deserves. I'm hoping it does eventually happen.
It's nice to know that the grass isn't necessarily greener on the other side. I'm sitting at stock and just waiting for 2.2 to drop. I have no problem rooting (I did the G1 bunches), but I just don't want to go to the trouble of rooting to find a different set of problems. As best I can tell that's what would happen. Even CM Beta 0 is buggy right now. I'll take the devil I know at this point. Thanks for sharing your story.
How is Quantum buggy? I use Quantum 2.1 here without ext4 and I'm not getting any bugs. It's the best rom I've found to date. Froyo is way smoother on basically every single thing I've tried to do than the stock rom ever was.

When I tap the power button to put the phone to sleep, it turns off the screen, pauses a second or two, then turns the screen back on with the lockscreen being displayed. It does this about 50% of the time. No other DK28 rom has done this for me, so its not DK28 that is causing this. The wifi toggle in the notification drop down causes errors probably 30% of the time with Wifi never turning on. There are SMS issues where it will freeze and not send messages. Friends have received multiple messages from me over and over for some reason.
I could go on, but I won't.

Interesting. I ran stock DK28 for a few weeks and it never happened to me. Maybe the bugs I thought were from Quantum were just DK28 being buggy. Its not that big of a deal, yet it infuriates me. Can't wait for official Froyo to be done. Please Samsung, please.
Returned to stock DI18 yesterday after experiencing glaring issues within less than one day of using EB13. That's a testament to how bad it is. EB13 is definitely not ready for prime time and must've been rushed out with glaringly known issues to appease the public with a 2.2 release. The stability, functionality and feature loss are not worth whatever minor gains in EB13 Froyo 2.2 such as bluetooth voice dialing, in-browser Flash support, etc. For now DI18 is the way to go for stability (record 600+ hours uptime before forced reboot) and for the most part everything work or have work around. Froyo 2.2 update is a failure for Sprint in comparison to T-Mobile Vibrant because theirs actually made improvements and resolve issues.
Method of upgrade was ODIN to stock DI18, run Samsung update for EB13, boot into recover mode, cleared cache and applied factory defaults.
EB13 issues found within a short time span and was concerned what else might surface:
- Instability, phone shut down when clicking on a link in browser
- Video camera live view and recording lag. I use the video camera every day so it was glaringly obvious.
- Graphical glitch in browser when dragging page where a block of the page is offset. This is glaringly obvious too and surprised it got by QA.
- Samsung update hung towards the end on second flash, good thing for old reliable stand-alone ODIN
You should try ODINing to EB13 rather than the Samsung method, most users so far have had a nearly flawless EB13 experience
I think it really depends on the exact methods people are using to upgrade. I haven't had any glaring issues, just some small things that existed on the stock 2.1, like weird button miss presses, some keyboard lag. Just waiting for a good EB13 rom before I say anything is defunct.
I wouldnt go all the way back to eclair....try if u don't like eb13 use dk28 I haven't gone to eb 13 but if I don't like how eb13 rides im going to dk28 especially now with a OC kernal

If I only had one Epic, I would stay on di18, or a custom ROM based on di18. Since I have 2 Epics, one will stay on di18 and the other will continue to beta test Froyo ROMs. There is little progress between dk28 and EB13. Most of the bugs from dk28 still exist in the latest release. I really hope our devs here can clean this mess up.
Im sad to say. But I just did. The low fps on low light video recording killed EB13 for me. Useless since I go out and do pegan nightime rituals and record the clan meeting. Now instead of having awesome night time videos off me wearing my long night hooded warlock trechcoat, it looks like a disaster video of blurr. How can I continue my rituals with this shat samsung!? Foorrrr shaaaammme!
At first I went back to a rooted/customized DI18. Unfortunately, the damn system update message kept popping up saying that an update was available and needed to install. I eventually got sick of the message and flashed the phone to Froyo using Odin. What do I have to remove to prevent the system update from trying to update my rooted phone?

You can delete the system updater.apk in the system/app directory. This will prevent your phone from downloading and prompting you to update.

Color me lucky?
Used Samsung method after returning to stock. Battery, GPS et al rock solid on EB13. Enjoyed Bonsai, but am now "in the groove" - custom ROM had some nice details, but gaps as well. EB13 is a hi function 4G smarter phone for me!
I did. After the latest issue of losing 4G for 2 days straight I reinstalled eb13 and nothing. I went back to DI18 and 4G came right up, what a shocker.
EDIT: I'm running on midnight ROM eb13 4.0 and with the new wired tether apk posted in the themes and apps area, my phone is running flawlessly! I just had to correct this post.

I went back. I record videos all the time and that's what killed it for me. Even in still-camera mode the pictures look almost pastel, hate it.
I'll be going back to Eclair. I really didn't like anything froyo had to offer besides the updated youtube app (if I can't get that on 2.1) and flash support.
I just got froyo this morning OTA, went to class, came home and flashed it again hoping to fix my main problems. Didn't work. I just got done wiping my phone, flashing DI18, reboot, flashing EB13, and still it's still messed up.
I really don't care about the camcorder deal because I don't use it often but the laggy sleep/wake and no auto correct are really annoying for me. I only use my epic for browsing here and there and mainly texting/music. Now the audio sounds bad and on top of that my dictionary vanished. I don't even know if anyone else is having this problem because no one seems to say anything about it. Not to mention they changed the call log (the little phone button) and you can't toggle through ringtone volume>vibrate>silent any more with the volume buttons.
Gonna go back to DI18, root, remove system updater(thanks for that tip^), fix the yamaha calibutil thing, and sit happily while I wait for a stable(r) release. What a pain.

Well, I'm done messing with this phone. It has been in a desk drawer for 2 months waiting for an upgrade. Now that it officially has Froyo, I can advertise it as such and sell it on eBay. Buy another phone.....preferably one not made by Samsung.
eb13 was anything but rushed lol
This is pretty sad. All of the people in this forum griped and moaned and yelled about not having froyo, now that they got it they dont want it. Bunch of kids
Now I dont profess to be an expert, but the low light thing is there, it is a bug and im sure they will fix it. is it a deal breaker? OMG no it isnt.
I have a relative who works for Sprint and they are going to get the Nexus S 4G in a week or two when it comes out. I am going to take their Epic off of their hands, upgrading from my Hero.
I was just curious how you all liked it? How does it perform, battery, etc...?
And is it as customizable with ROMs as the Hero is? I've had quite a bit of fun with the Hero, I just think its about time for an upgrade.
Let me know, thanks!
I dont know anything about the Hero. But i'm really happy with my Epic. I have it overclocked at 1.45Ghz. The devs that work on this phone have great support for there work(and more often then not, will help even if its not their's) The Custom roms here are stable. I'm running "SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1.0" with the "VisionKernel v1.2" and can't be happier.
I'm fine with mines. But I've always had a Samsung phone so I'd like to try a new phone for once. I get about 12-14 hrs of use with moderate usage, which is more than enough for me. I always have a battery pack with me just in case but I've never had to use it. I've tried many roms. And I think it is pretty customizable like the hero, but not 100% sure.
I love my Epic; I've had it since September and it has taken a ton of abuse with no issues at all. Roms are all pretty good, but I am currently running on a stripped/rooted EC05 and happy as can be with it.
The performance is outstanding on it; I played the benchmark game going back and forth between roms for the best performance but the bottom line is even stock it is plenty fast... sure it can be made faster, but the phone is just plain fast to begin with.
Battery life is not bad for what it is. I can make it through a day without issue unless I am playing games for hours etc. With normal web and phone usage I will be between 60 and 75% at the end of the work day. If I just blast it all day it will be 30-50% at the end of a work day. If I take it real easy it can go about two days.
I was considering going to the Nexus when it comes out, but I'm not sure I can handle losing the hw keyboard... it was the final deciding factor between the Epic and the Evo for me; and while I use swype 90% of the time (I expected to use the HW KB all the time), that 10% where I really just have to use the HW KB really is necessary for me (doing web based tech support/training sometimes getting client contacts when there isn't a computer accessible). For the keyboard alone it is worth it's weight in gold to me, and if some of my clients knew I was getting them through a crisis on a telephone, they would probably say the same thing
So uh yeah... you'll be happy with it.
i hate it
im getting a nexus as soon as its available on sprint

I came frpm the htc hero. I love this phone! The development isn't quite as large but the phone's hardware is amazing. The hero had lag in many places and the epic pretty much has none. The epic's GPU is basically the strongest on the market (atleast for sprint, until the evo 3d comes out), so any gaming will work great on the Epic.

I agree with many of the previous post. The Epic doesn't have as many roms as the hero no true cm rom yet, but it will blow your mind! Very fast stock. My battery on stock, using the hell out it with screen as bright as it gets is usually 8 hours maybe a lill more. On custom roms 10 plus heavy use. Phone is a champ and handles anything thrown at it. You will have the equivalent of the nexus s because they are the same phone I know people holding the s now. The screen alone is amazing and upscales the worst video you can play. All in all you are very lucky to get this upgrade and despite some heads clashing this community will reach out and help you each step of the way myself included. Need anything pm me no hesitation!

The Epic has excellent hardware. The stock software, on the other hand, ranges from a joke to a nightmare. Plan on putting a custom ROM on it to get the most out of the unit; I run SyndicateROM and the phone performs far better than it did on any of the previous stock ROMs.
I'm very happy with the phone itself, however.
I like it a lot ever since cleaning it up. That's the key to the whole thing I think.
The only issue that I have with my Epic is the Build quality. I feel that Samsung cheapened up the device to the point that it scratches it self from opening and it can be loose. That stuff aside it is an amazing handset and well worth the money.

You're going to love the phone. The keyboard is the nicest you'll ever get on a phone, its really fast and the screen is going to blow you away. I'm using a custom rom Syndicate Frozen and I have had no problems at all compared to stock.

I agree with most of the posts in here so far. I love my epic and it is really easy to customize. Personally, I had to make the switch to custom roms not only because of performance increase, but mostly for the battery performance increase. I would get 6 - 8 hours tops on stock off one battery, now I average about 18 hours. It feels weird not carrying my extra battery with me everywhere now!
The devs here are amazing and support their roms very well. Hats off to you guys!
My only problems with the epic are:
1. semi-sketchy opening mechanism. I've had 2 epics and both of them had/have a loose feeling screen after being used a while (to be expected I guess)
2. Lack of fm radio - there are apps to "fix" this though, and I guess I wouldn't really use it that much anyway
3. Lack of tv - out. This is being worked on, but I can't stand the fact this was disabled.
enjoy your new epic!
I haven't come across a ROM yet that improves battery life when the device is being used.
They may help the phone idle and sleep more efficiently but cleaning up the stock ROM does the same thing.
My two biggest improvements came when I froze System Update and removed SNS.
I can't seem to find one thing wrong with this rom everything for me is running perfect. No more freezing, force closing slow boot up pretty much everything that was wrong with froyo fixed. I am very please with this rom.
Anyone know if roam control still works with this ROM? I use it quite a bit to use VZW 3g since Sprints has been broken for almost a year here.

I thought roam control only made it 1x speed?

Ok. This rom is almost there but I might go back froyo tomorrow. What bothers me is the lack of gpu power. Its not ext4 and not overclock. And I get a slight lag frame per second drop in a rithmic maner. It happens all around the phones os and apps. Like tapatalk.. Flick Scroll down a thread and when u bottom out u see a stutter jerky fps drop. Not big but I see it.

Roam control works great on EF02 (as does everything it seems) ... I just used it yesterday to roam off Verizon all day.

I notice very little lag, if at all, on EF02. Are you on stock? marcusant's i1 has some tweaks in there to make the kernel even faster. Honestly, it's faster than some of the EXT4 OC'd ROMs I've used.
force close both in froyo and this Gingerbread sometimes.
Try using navigation for more than 15 minutes. that's the only problem I've seen so far. It shuts the gps down.

+1 on this, Loving EF02 with EF10 modem so far. I'm running it stock, rooted with the ACS EF02 CRTmod and it's solid, smooth, and is giving me the best battery life I've had so far.
Roam control works fine for me. The only issue I've had is the EF02 modem crashing, but with the EF10 modem it's been fine.

Not to offend, but you're pretty critical about performance as well, right?
