My friend has the HTC evo which is the same screen size as the DX, and I noticed he had a sick boot animation from the Virus rom. I had him send me the bootanimation.zip file.
Would this work if I replace my current bootanimation with it?
I am just worried about whether or not it will boot. I know how to do everything else
Give it a try. Your phone will still boot if it doesn't work.

Yea all that will happen if it doesnt work is ull have a black screen while it boots up instead of an animation... Even if it wasnt sized right as long as u put it in data/local in its zipped form it should work

Do u have a preview? Could u post the file here?

/data/local? In all of my experiences it has only worked in /system/media, which is where my current one is and there is nothing in /data/local. I will try both I guess.
And yes I will post the file here, just after I test it
Well apparently data/local is the default for any rom... (it would override system/media if there was somthing there.) Let us know how it works for you.

I just tried it, and it worked perfectly. I copied the file into /system/media where my old bootanimation.zip was, and rebooted, and it worked. There was no boot animation in /data/local, and when I put it there in the past, it didn't work, so I did not try it in there.
I have attached the file with my post if anyone else would like to try it out.
Hmmmm..... Never mind my computer is not allowing me to upload the file, I will do it in an hour or two with my phone.

Here it is... Credit goes to the creator of virusROM - XxXViRuSXxX (or whoever created the boot animation for his ROM).
Rename to bootanimation.zip and copy to /data/local/ (for me it did not work in /system/media/ where I usually put it, but try it in either one).
virusROM bootanimation.zip
Thanks for posting. Sorry everybody, my computer was being gay last night.
Please nobody try to flash this in CWM, it will not work

How do I flash my bootanimation.zip file through terminal emulator?
Just use root explorer or any other file manager with root rights and copy it. No need to flash.

What of I want to revert? How would I do that through terminal emulator?
what rom are you using? Depending on the ROM, you navigate to where it is with a file explorer, rename the stock to whatever, copy the animation .zip that you want to the same folder (renaming it what the stock was, exactly) and you're done.
Royal Ginger 1.5
So I download the stock boot animation and put the files into the bootanimation.zip file I already have?
I'm assuming you've downloaded a zip file from somewhere. Do not unzip it, just rename it to "bootanimation.zip" and place it in the directory that holds the original bootanimation.zip file. You can always make a backup of the original first.
This may depend on the rom, but usually you can put your new bootanimation.zip file in the /data/local/ directory, and the phone will use that without you having to disturb the original.

I'm trying to change my boot animation also. I changed the zipped file to bootanimation.zip. How do I access System/media ? When I mount, it just opens the sd drive on my computer.

You need to be rooted and you need to do it with your device with some kind of file manager like root explorer.

Once ur rooted u could just go into recovery and install the zip manually that's usually how I do it or download the bootloader changer app either requires root

What from you using and what animation you trying to add?

I just dont understand what you mean with: "What from you using"
I tried the SGS2 Bios from OTA app. Before flashing Speedmodkernel, it worked great.
Then I tried to replace the Bootanimation with any other.. I found that thread:
Bootanimation
I downdloaded bootanimation_v2.zip and renamed it into bootanimation.zip, then replaced it like i said in the post before..

My bad, I meant to type rom. Auto correct is killing me. Anyways, depending on the rom you're in, you will have to name the boot animation differently and place it in a specific place also depending on the rom.
If the rom you're in is aosp, then you're naming it right but it will go in system/media.
For sense roms, you will have to rename the boot animation to htc_bootanimation.zip and place it in system/customize/resource.
EDIT: I actually downloaded the boot animation myself, and I think I found the reason probably why is not working. In the desc.txt file, the screen res is wrong for our device. That boot animations res is 480x115, our supposed to be 480x800.
So do this,
Extract the bootanimation.zip you downloaded
Open and edit the desc.txt file with your file managers text editor
Change the res from 480x115 to 480x800 save and exit
Zip back the file, name it correctly, fix permissions and move it to its correctsponding place and reboot. See if that works.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
Thanks for your help. But I think this is the SpeedMod Kernel blocking everything...
I tried that bootanimation which I attached just now. The desc.txt file is correct, placed in system/media but it doesn't work.
I am on darkys HD rom. Without the Speedmodkernel everything is fine. to change my THEME I had to flash the supercore kernel and then back to SpeedMod, because when I try it with the Speedmod kernel, nothing happens. Just like the bootanimation, when I try it zu replace and reboot, nothing happens xD
It has to be the Speedmod Kernel. What else?
I have tried to edit the boot animation using UOT kitchen on the LeeDrOiD rom since version 2.2 but have had no success!
i believe it is stored in system/customize/resources. i pick this option in UOT and the boot animation doesn't change.. i pick the option "Sense ROM" in UOT and still no change... any ideas?
It might be write-protected. If you can, get root explorer, and get a custom animation zip file.
Make sure its called bootanimation.zip
Copy to SD.
Using root explorer, navigate to system/customize/resources, mount as writeable, (little touchbox near the top). You should see a file called bootanimation.zip in there- that is the one in use.
Now go back, find where you saved your custom bootanimation.zip, copy and replace the other file. If you want, rename the original to bootanimation(1).zip and place your custom zip in next to it (in case it doesnt work and you want to revert to previous animation.)
Exit, Reboot, and should be done =)
Hope this helps.
Yeah that method definitely works as I've got a custom bootanimation on LeeDrOiD 3.0.2
Also, while you're there, you can delete (or rename) android_audio.mp3 if you want to get rid of the sound on startup.

Thanks for the info, do you need to be S-off to do the above?

When I rooted I S-OFF'ed straight away, so to be honest I don't know. As far as I'm aware, no, you need S-Off for the SPlash screen, not the Boot animation. Don't quote me on this though

Think so yeah.
I thought S-OFF was needed to make changes to the system folder while the phone was switched on (in it's normal mode...) ?
Maybe I misread somewhere
Like I said, I'm not too sure, I guess there's no harm trying it with S-ON?
@UKseagull, if you want to get S-OFF on the desire, try Unrevoked-Forever, if that doesn't work (like for me) I found an alternative.
Get AlphaRev, Click Here and download the .iso file.
However, I had a little problem burning the image as it wouldn't boot, so I used virtualBox to run it and gain S-OFF that way.

Confirming, to edit system folder you need to be s-off. Any problems with adobe flash, as it's in system, you need to be s-off. Struggled to make changes till s-offed today.
I'm gonna give it a try now..
I'm S-ON so if that doesn't work, would using adb work?
Edit: Just realised there's a second page LOL. I don't particularly wanna S-OFF, should I try adb?
Did you manage to do it on s-on?

I believe if you use ADB you can put the bootanimation.zip into /system/customize/resource folder.
If you haven't flashed the ROM yet you can just delete the original bootanimation.zip from the ROM zip folder and replace it with whichever one you want..

Anyone know where to get the sound that the boot comes with (R2D2)

Get Root Explorer, Go into system/customise/resource and it is the mp3 file in there.
So I put on this xbox boot animation a while back, and recently I wanted to change it to a nexus s animation. I tried a flashable one and the old animation was still there. Later I tried to do the manual one by Going into system/media. Didn't work. I do not know what to do. Would be nice if you could help.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
If you're on a sense rom, it needs to be in /system/customize/resource, for aosp, /system/media. The flashable didn't work probably because it flashed to the other location.
Still will not let me delete the boot animation in system/customize/resource

You'll have to use root explorer, make sure you're mounted as r/w, or use adb to push the new file.
So I am using file expert. I made sure I checked the root permission box, and I try to delete the boot animation but it simply doesnt. It puts a status bar up for the deleting operation then closes.

Hello, does anyone know where to find MIUI Multilingual's bootanimation and bootaudio, and the .xml file so i can edit them?
In system/media there is bootanimation.zip and bootaudio.mp3. If you want to edit the bootanimation look at desc.txt.
Thank you, however it seems that my phone still uses the IDEOS logo as bootanimation, and that one is located in "pink-screen" mode, is it okay to delete it?
You mean the splashscreen? I believe that is located in the kernel, and not easy to edit.

Well, when i boot, it doesn't use the MIUI bootanimation, it still uses stock Ideos animation, and i think that one is located in pinkscreen-mode.
Try placing the bootanimation.zip in /data/local on your phone with root explorer. Then reboot, it should work

Hmm, it didn't work, and i even tried replacing the bootanimation.zip in cust/Dialect/SE/media (which is where i go when i go into pinkscreen-mode) with the MIUI one, still nothing.
Sorry, I see no reason why it won't work.. You can try to delete the whole cust folder (in pink screen), it that don't work preform a full wipe.
What ROM version are you talking about? If latest, then you should pay more attention to rom changelog. retart said there, that he turned off bootanimation for faster boot.

hi,
saw a cool boot animation in reddit.. http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1pb6dv/jarvis_boot_animation_480x800/
i downloaded this file, extracted the archive, changed the desc.txt file to suit nexus 4's resolution put it in a archive named 'bootanimation.zip' and placed it in /system/media/. but when i rebooted the phone only the black screen was there to greet me
i even tried the default resolution in desc.txt but still the boot screen is completely black..
i'm on stock rom, rooted with franco kernel.. what am i missing here.. help me to set up the boot animation please..
When you zip it back up, you need to use the "store" compression method.

FWIW i tried previewing this animation in the Boot Animation app.. it threw an error.. so there might be a possibility that this zip has some issue..
I just checked out the zip and everything seems to be fine. I also tried it out (put it in system/media) and it worked perfectly.
Are you sure the one that you linked above isn't working for you? Try using it without any modifications just to be sure.

now i feel stupid.. reddit op had given a mediafire link too.. i downloaded from that link.. the issue with that link was that all the part folders and desc.txt were present under a folder and that folder was zipped as bootanimation.zip.. in the new link which i gave in my previous post the part folders and desc.txt were directly zipped...
now the animation works perfect and i have even modded the desc to suit nexus 4's resolution..
