I recently asked Sony Ericsson for an Xperia X8 2.2 an official update, I was not expecting a reply but they did.
Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson support centre.
We can advise the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini, Mini Pro and X8 were all tested on Android 2.2 but did not improve the handset but rather diminished it as it started to run slower and crashed frequently which will not have improved the user experience.
The decision was then made to keep these handsets on Android 2.1 as they were originally designed to go up to Android 2.1 and no further, however as Android 2.2 was requested by our users the handset was tested.
Once we were able to update the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to Android 2.3 we then also tested the Xperia X10 Mini, Mini Pro and X8 with this Android platform, however it again diminished the handset.
Sony Ericsson decided to keep these handsets on Android 2.1 so the handset would perform at its highest. As advised we will continue to release system updates for the handset to try and improve it as much as possible, however this will not be performed by updating the Operating System to Android 2.2 or 2.3.
We can only apologise for the inconvenience caused and will ensure your feedback is passed on to the relevant department to be looked into.

Hmmmm..........I'm pretty sure the custom made by devs don't crash I'm guessing they can't be bothered.
The reason is simple: they don't want to upgrade OS for us because that upgrade doesn't bring them profit.
It (the above reply) is just a way to fool noob users to stay with 2.1 happily.

TRUE!
Please someone who knows english flawlessly reply to SE:
If you found out 2.2 is diminishing the phone, then why does the ported 2.2 (2.3)

Why don't you reply to them? Attach links to custom roms including 2.2 and 2.3 on this forum and ask if they are idiots or they have idiot developers? Ask exacley what they tested, what doesn't work, what exacley what is slow, ask when they are planinig updates, what kind of updates...
Be stupid and BOTHER THEM with question =)
If few individuals can make [email protected], I still wounder how big companie such as SE can't do it.
I agree with post above > no money -no new android. So much for customer service.
I'm guessing i won't be buying another SE anytime soon, aldough I realy liked the brand.
Yeah, android 2.2 and 2.3 used to crash on X8's stock kernel. If they modified the kernel for the newer version of android it would have stopped crashing. But I guess they took a look at it, decided it's too much of a work for them, and dumped the project in order to focus on newer phones
As for slowing down - if drivers were meant for 2.1 of course it slowed down. If they made a proper 2.3 update for X8 it would run smooth as baby's ass.
Bullshitters.
i have a bit....

Very True. Now we have ICS running very smooth.
I think the 2.2 roms that are running smooth here, are because they have no additional software running in the background. If you have SE software running in the background and SE apps installed, of course it will be slow.

Hi,
as I don't know anything about ROM-development I wanted to ask how difficult it would be to flash just a native Android 2.1 (Custom-) ROM on the phone. Is there a lot of modding to be done or is it no big thing.
UX sure is nice but I suppose plain 2.1 would be a lot faster. Maybe with Mediascape on top..
I don't want to wait until the official update in something like Q3..
I believe that you have to root the device first.
After that you can do almost everything you want with the monster named X10.
My guess would be vanilla 2.1 is the first major happening after the root. Not ready to give up on timescape/mediascape just yet. They are both developer extensible and I have a feeling that the smart guys around here are going to figure out some nifty uses. Interesting times if this device sees some support.

I'd love to see a timescape/mediascape UI ROM for other Android phones.
Heck, I'd love to see the whole UI on another phone. I'm curious to see how it'll work. Specifically seeing as how the X10 won't be supporting multi-touch (as I hear it's a hardware issue as well as software), it'll be interesting to see the UI on a phone that supports multi-touch.

Here's an email i've got in modaco foruns:
Yesterday I sent an email to Sony Ericsson asking them to confirm specs features of their X10 handset. This is what I received.
Dear ******,
Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson support centre.
I have complied some answers to the questions that you have raised, please see below:
#1 Does the device itself support multi touch? I am aware that the the
current OS Android 1.6 does not.
The handset has a capacitive screen that is capable of multi touch for features such as pinch zooming. This feature will be implemented by the upgrade to 2.1
#2 Does the device have an internal digital compass which would show
direction in google maps?
The X10 does have a magnetometer that acts as a digital compass.
#3 Will android 2.1+ be coming to the Xperia x10 in 2010?
The handset has been confirmed to be upgraded to 2.1, however there are no time scales for this, developement is currently working on implementing the Timescape/Mediascape to 2.1.
Should you have any further questions do not hesitate to ask.
Kind Regards,

Has anyone tried to include the apks from the SDK addon in another ROM? Maybe I'm too naive, but it should be possible, shouldn't it? When you extract the system.img, there are several apks and most of them have the X10 icons.

Sumit Malhotra confirms no MT on X10
Here's what he said:
Back in November, I posted that X10 will not support multi touch functionality at launch, but will be considered for the future. I can appreciate that even though there wasn´t a commitment, such wording both creates expectations (small or big) on future support and implies restrictions on software side.
That is the information I had in hand at that point of time. I am well aware that you rate multi touch functionality very high and therefore I regret to inform you that X10 screen hardware does not register simultaneous entries. Meaning even though we will upgrade the underlying operating system in relation to upgrading our user experience layer, X10 will not support multi touch functionality. We believe that it is important for you who follow this blog to be clear on that, which is the reason why I want to confirm Rikard’s comment.
We are working on alternative solutions for certain use cases, like zooming. I will share more details about that initiative once confirmed.
Due to vendor understanding and agreements, we don´t discuss in detail regarding hardware specifications. Having said that, X10 is upgradable and as earlier described there will be significant value offered through upgrades. X10 is about to reach stores and early consumer feedback is very positive, also highlighting room for improvement which we will share in due time.
Regards,
Sumit

Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10 to get UXP upgrade in Q4 2010
Xperia™ X10 in Q4 2010 are:
- Upgrade to Android OS version 2.1
- HD video recording as per the same execution as Sony Ericsson Vivaz™
- Wireless home connectivity via DLNA
- Improvements to signature applications Timescape™ and Mediascape to make them even smarter and richer.
Taken from
http://http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/products/category/xperia-x10/
I must say I'm happy about the HD recording. I was hoping for more codec support though.
I'm also wondering what that means for flash support? I am aware that Froyo is going to support it natively, Do you think there will be an add-on made available for us on 2.1?
IN addition to that SE have confirmed a small performance based update in the coming weeks.
" would also like to emphasise that there will be an additional smaller software update, already in the next couple of weeks aiming to enhance the usability and performance of Xperia™ X10. In the next post, I will share more details and precise timings for when this update will be released."

HD video recording...awesome! Also, the Vivaz has autofocus during video recording, which is really cool

Really? So does that mean that the hardware sepc differs on your device?
I thought if it was just a matter of software you'd be able to flash the device with new files.
THis is good news. I sure hope that they TWEAK THE DAMN CAMERA LIGHT. To maybe automatically turn on when the camera is focusing. Kinda like the red/orange lights on other cameras. That would be awesome!

Im not sure but root could solve your problem. We are still waiting for it.
Ya auto flash...that would be nice too. Man it is pretty bad when the list of needed improvements is soooooo big that you start forgetting about them. At any rate its still my fav phone to date (former iphone 3g user) and the updates are welcome.
I do think that SE could have done a lot better with rolling out the phone with a current OS to begin with though. Especially noting the delays to launch.
Ill take what I can get, even if I have to wait until when??? Like a half a year from now. Im depressed
HTC Desire runs android 2.1, and the camera has autoflash. So, we should get it too.
hello htc evo is all i can say, x10 is a great phone but possibly waiting 8 months for 2.1 is just plain stupid...
if things are like this, i think it will just snowball. 2.1 in Q4 while the 2.2 would have been out for a good 3-4 months already. SE will then just hear louder cries for 2.2 updates (mostly i believe, is the flash support). and then what? another 5 month wait? will a newer version come out then? why play a catch up game that you probably can't win?

I sent this through the se customer support website - i don't know if it's any good...
Hello there - Would it be possible that the Xperia X10 and X10 mini (pro) be upgraded to Android 2.2 Froyo instead of Android 2.1 Eclair by Q4 of this year? There are many new features being added, so by the time we get 2.1, it will be outdated. Froyo also seems to run on the 2.6.29 linux kernel, which the X10 already runs on, so porting that at least should be as difficult as Eclair.
Also, would it be possible for people who own these devices to flash unsigned roms by unlocking the bootloader in some way - like google has done with the nexus one. This would void the warranty of course, but it would people to develop their own roms who have not had the chance to obtain a pre-release or developer phone etc. Maybe they could even test things for you?
Please take this comment seriously - I'll be looking forward to see what you think of this.
Thanks
That's great Hunteron!
Do you think you could somehow get that to this "Bill Maggs" fellow?
This seriously bothers me. We have a phone with what is probably some of the best hardware on the market, but we are stuck with crap software.
This bit interests me though:

Fire off another email to them. Maybe they will give you his.
I really think we have to do something very strong to make Sony realize they have to take care of us and give us Froyo without waiting for this silly Timescape/Mediascape nonsense update delay.
What do you think wille be the best collective action?:
-Petition
-synchronised mail (everyone send a mail to SE at a coordinated time)
-thousands of comments on this pages:
http://blogs.sonyericsson.com/produ...-upgrade-in-q4-2010/comment-page-10/#comments
-massive customer support calls
.... any idea
In my opinion, being a SE dedicated user since my K790, SE will give us a few updates including 2.1 but that will do it for this device.
2.2 (or 2.4, whatever) will be released on the X11 or whatever the next Xperia Android device is.
The reason is new business along with SE's continual use of a custom UI over a standard OS.
I had x1 and now x10, but if sony don't get Android 2.2 then I am selling this phone and not getting anything else from them again (would buy HTC instead).
/\ That's for sony hopefully it works
Ill say the petition and post it on any cellphone forum you could know, the point is even if sony ericson dismiss it for now,it could hurt further sales.

I agree; it's not as if SE spent all the time and manpower to build their UI for just one device.. X10 is their first dip in the pool, and the loyal fans are sadly being taken for a ride through this experiment.. and their next Android device will (hopefully!) learn from the shortcomings of the X10.
I'll probably get an X10 if it's rooted, but let's be honest, that seems pretty unlikely. I might go for a Nexus One if it gets cheap in a few months. (my options are limited since I need the 1700 AWS band for 3G to work on T-Mobile US)
Do you guys really think SE is going to care if there's a petition out there? They've got their own slow and puzzling way of doing things and show no signs of changing.
I think mass emails would best. Someone needs to write a letter and then we can copy it and all send it to sony.
Whilst the idea of a petition is good and constructive, i doubt it will make very little difference.
SE are already aware of how important the latest version of the Android OS is to its X10 customers.
They have an official blog which was designed to communicate with and to receive feedback from it's customers.
From the begining customers were campaigning for mulitouch and 2.1.
Infact potentials customer were campaigning for 2.1 before release (whilst the official release was delayed)
Since the announcement about 2.1 in Q4. All the customers on that blog are also campaigning for 2.2.
I think their problems are with the integration of the UX(Time and MediaScape) with android (which caused the original delayed release).
Funny thing for me is i'd rather take the new OS updates over their UX.
honestly, i think the UX is a piece of crap, i never use it.
Just wait till you can root it and have 2.2 on it, just a waist of energy doing a petition to se....

The UI doesn't even seem all that customized. What? The timescape as the home interface was a UI? Looks like a freaking app to me.
X10 has one of the best hardware you can ask for the moment. But no software to take advantage of the hardware just isn't right. Q4 for a 2.1 update?
Please, 2.2 is out already.
SE already lost me. My N1 is coming on Tuesday. And with 2.2 out, x10 will probably hit ebay soon or after a 2.1 update. Unless SE grows a pair and hand us 2.2 like in one month.
I hate to rag on the x10 but the phone was just not what I had expected and I ask myself, I wait for this phone?
4 inch screen won't mean jack when a 3.7 inch can view flash videos. And so far we don't even know if SE will even hand us 2.2. And that's the sad part.
SE screwed this phone. They shouldn't have gone with custom UI. It is laggy even with the best hardware available. Horrendous.
My rant is over.

OMG !!!
2.2 update for N1 is already being pushed over the air......
( sorry for being out of topic
Omg… please upgrade to 2.2. Even G1 works better with Froyo. Why are we the lowest of the low? I think there are many people very disappointed.
SE needs to clear this up soon. Why would anyone buy an X10 now?

any device with root is better than x10 , let's support root team because with root ,there will not be any problem at all
If timescape and mediascape were a mind bogglingy good interface that is integrated perfectly into the main UI I would say "fine. I can see why they are being a bit slow about it", but for crying out loud, they are just a couple of apps that belong in the damn market place.
I decieded to go ahead and make the petition, might be for nothing but hey why not.i just need your help to corect my statement and improve it if you fell like it,thats the text i wrote for the petition.
We would like to suggest a path for the future development of the Sony Ericsson (Xperia X10, Xperia X10 mini and Xperia X10 mini pro)
Some recent development on the Android platform, have made the current OS software 1.6 outdated. Most of the current product sold by your competitor are currently running on 2.1 and some already getting the new OS software 2.2.
The OS software version 2.1 have been announced for the end of the current year to be available on your Xperia x10 line, but that update will still put your product behind the competition since even older device will be running OS software 2.2 at that time.
The hardware specification of the X10 line is quite impressive and should in theory be able to be quite competitive. Sadly the hardware is extremely limited by the software ,preventing us the user to use the full capacity of your device and make most of the application available for Android impossible to use ,since they need the version 2.1.
Wireless technology is an integral part of everyday life and we has customer or future customer would like to request the new Android OS version 2.2 to be implemented instead of the 2.1.
We believe it would serve Sony Ericsson interest as well, making your product competitive and expend your user base. As you know the Android platform is rapidly growing and update is the key of that success.
We hope you will understand our concern and demand.
It's obvious we have to make a sound to sony ericsson. They need to know what customers want and at least try to give them what they want. I don't have my x10 yet, but I will be buying it next week.
I've already checked out timescape, it is essentially an Application, with customized libraries and a plugin manager etc. In fact there are 3 different apps voor timescape present in the system. They use SE's self designed libraries and SE's self designed permissions. These libraries and permission are present in the x10 system software.
And I'm not a good programmer, just a n00b, but I don't know if anyone would be able to port these libraries and permissions in let's just say an app. If this is not possible then SE will always need to customize the Android system with it's own UI before handing the update to end-users.

Finally the unofficial update Gingerbread with CM features to X8 has been a reality with the help of one of the FreeXperia member. Although we have so many great ROMs out there it will never replicate what unique sony features is, but through this debranding engine we are very close to 2011 edition phone by SE. We have now the final release and thanks to Achotjan, but apparently due to he has no device to continually develop and support for X8, we will not have an frequent update. Below is the willingness of this guy to work on our device. In short we have to be united again like we did to bring back our great dev doixanh. If we like to have a frequent support we also have to make a move and help Achotjan.
i haven't the device in hand now , so will not be able to release new updates , if you really want to have more update on this rom , and a future ICS CM9 semc debrand engine so , donate me and wrote here on the thread the amount and confirmation number if i have necessary money to buy this device i will gladly buy the device and continue to work on
Cheers
Achotjan

Yeah! C'mon guys! We'll riot Sony Ericsson! I'll see if I have any money on my card (I'm only a teenager so I don't know how much I have ) , also, we should all email Sony Ericsson with a pre-made email from here on the forum. So all you'd have to do is copy the email that some one of us XDA members will make and paste it into an email!
It could possibly change Sony's Mind!
i shoud donate ,but paypall not work in Srbija
@IrishStuff09 same here, only a teenager, but i will see if i have anything on my debit card
Im not promising i will (cuz i doubt i will have any money) but i will look
Irish to make it clear. The reason why SE doesn't support anymore 2010 series phone is because of there marketing strategy, actually there reason that the device cant handle any updates anymore because of low specs is just a cover up for the strategy. i know they are fully aware that this device can do a lot better than there cover up reason. So I think mailing them would not make any sense. If they will support X8 of course more people will choose X8 if it also have an Arc features, cheap yet powerful.

not realy , xperia x8 is realy a problem for SE , why ? cause of drm releated think
x8 its a armv6 cpu based device and it will take more time and effort to make all armv7 libs for armv6 , they will lose a lot of time and of mony also , other then that the reason that why my rom is stable and speedy its cause of CM7 and our hacks
SE can not do that as they need to support the device after the update if you have the same ussd errors its not serius from a big manufacter , also i already trayed even for x10 to build a AOSP with semcdebrand engine and its realy lagy cuase ther is no tweak so i think they can not do that for x8 , but for x10 they can even make real multituch but they not do that thats is another question ,
but i agree that they can update it to at leas Froyo
cheers
Achotjan
...:-( no paypall in serbia....

Well if its for the common good then I will always support it
We have to collect about 150$/115Euros. Achotjan need older device with unlocked bootloader or at least possibility of unlocking. Right now I'm without cash, but in 3 days I'll give Achotjan some bucks
Yes it will be a problem as well for him finding old release x8. Im also thinking about that a while ago since we have unlocking issues on new release.
Maybe someone is changing phone and has unlocked X8 to sell?
Im a teenager too :-/
but you can t buy a new phone. it s very risky about bootloader unlock...
Sent from my E15i using XDA App
Best thing to do is to buy a used phone, which means he probably can unlock bootloader and it will be cheap too.
i am going to donate 2.5 gbp

(and @deedii)
That's my very first thought as well.
If he goes out NOW to buy a new X8 the chances are incredibly high that he will only be able to fetch a post-11W29 device that can't be unlocked by software - this means he has to take the trouble to crack it open with either setool2 or Wotan (and both methods aren't tried yet).
I think it would be a whole lot more efficient if Achotjan would first investigate his options to either somehow get a OLD X8 that can be unlocked by the_laser's hack or determine that he can unlock a newer 11W29+ / 12W## X8 through the testpins trick.

hmmmm, yes, if we dont contact him saying that he should buy a pre-owned x8 with the date 11w28 and below, he might go out to shops now and come back with one that we will have to crack through testpins, and this will be hard. what if there could be a fix to fill up the security hole?
nah, i doubt it. Wish there was though.....
So how'd you think we will crack these testpins? The only things i have ever hacked is someones cctv, and my neighbors wifi
EDIT: hey guys, check this out! wander what date it is......
