I just want to get a few opinions from people on XDA.
This year I will eventually upgrade my phone to something else.
I'm looking for a few features:
1. Dual Core Processor.
2. Front Facing Camera
3. Same Size Screen s HD2 or larger
4. Ample amount of Ram
5. Fast Mobile Internet
I passed on the T-Mobile G2X because of the screen size.
Now I'm waiting for the HTC Sensation and the Samsung Galaxy SII.
My HD2 has Android on it.
I want a native Android phone so I can flash whatever operating system on it
and not miss any calls or text.
The HD2 is a very fun phone IMO.
So what new phone will everyone get this year?
htc sensation. plus many of the devs already said they are getting it as well.
Definitely HTC Sensation.

Just look at it.
Galaxy s 2. I'm not willing to wait on devs to unlock the bootloader of the sensation, seeing as how the sony x10 took about a year? And the moto atrix is still a work in progress, and likely by the time the sensation is unlocked, like every other locked bootloader phone, a new "innovational" device would've come out already. Nor am I merciful enough to spare a flagship for its less than decent amount of space. Flagships should have atleast 8 gb space nowadays.

I dont think any other phone (Sensation and SGS II) can be flashed with any other OS (cross platform like HD2).
HD2 is an exception....
But, if you want to have an hackable device, you should go for HTC Sensation
Cheers
My plan is to upgrade in July, get the sensation, sell it brand new boxed etc, use the money and my hd2 in the meanwhile and put whatever extra moneys towards the evo 3d when that drops.
Sorry that sentence is misleading. I would have the HD2 to fulfill my flashaholic appetite.
The new phone will be my everyday driver.
I like the look and design of the Sensation.
But the screen and memory/ storage of the SGSII is tempting.
Thanks for all the responces.

I have had my HD2 for well over a year, almost going on to two, and still till today I get some of the best quadrant scores... Even when compared to phones that are only getting launched now.
Multi core is the next big thing along with 3d graphics for our little devices, but unfortunately they are useless if the OS is not developed around them. Same goes with having a 64bit CPU, and running a 32bit OS.... You guys get the point.
For me my HD2 is still going to stay in my pocket, until a true dual core android OS is launched. The one and only reason I would change, and probably get the Samsung GS2, is because of the lower battery drain the AMOLED screen has, and the amount of RAM it comes with.
The wait shouldn't be too long, Google has already announced ice cream sandwich... Hopefully by then the Sensation will have been rooted, which also be my next choice in phones.
When I saw the review on youtube of the Samsung Galaxy S2 I have been really turned on!
how aboute the LG Speed 2x ?
Think i read somewhere ( forgot where ) the the battery lasts day's
You have 2 choices. Either Samsung Galaxy S 2, or the HTC Sensation. If you are looking forward for a hackable cellphone with a solid build I definitely recommend you the HTC Sensation. I believe HTC is the best cellphone company right now!
we might have to change our minds guys
signed bootloader, not locked. which means hacking is out the window.
the same method that is used on the Incredible 2/S and what Motorola uses.

very disappointing in deed.
I'm not too conserned about the signed bootloader.
I don't really plan on flashing or rooting my next device.
I will keep my HD2 for my flashing needs.
Not saying if it does get unlocked I wont start flashing it.
Has anyone had a chance to compare the screens of the SGSII and the Sensation side by side yet?

Don't suppose you use titanium backup or any other apps that need root. :3
No. I don't plan on doing anything but text, make phone calls, browse the internet, and use the music/video player.
It lets me experiment with roms on the HD2 and not miss any important calls or text.
Which I do now when I'm flashing and playing around with new roms.
I just want something wont choke or freeze.

Well if all you want is such, both phones fit your criteria, heck any phone does lawl.
Anyways, well as you said before, the galaxy s 2 has more storage, henc more space for music/videos, and if you store only a little, well, you won't need an sd card anymore right? The way I see it right now, if the galaxy s 2 can play 1080p youtube videos, then its processor is the king of this year. Well until the iPhone 5 comes out with that sexy powerVr sgx543.

tmobile one was fake..and there is no android 3.0 yet
The phone does look amazing, but the biggest drawback in my opinion is the same thing that made me purchase a Hero; "Sense" (even though I love it). Maybe HTC's OS release times will improve, but I'm not so sure it'll be worth waiting so long for them to update the UI every time a major OS update is released in the future. I think it'll be vanilla Android only, for me, from here on out. I just need something with that 4.3" screen
I want it!!!!
My next device will have a physical keyboard and large screen.
HTC is coming out with phone after phone. But has no time to support the phones that are already out. This ticks me off a bit..
meh...i can wait. My Hero does just fine for me, and I can wait until October to see what comes out when I upgrade again
if it's sprint, where is their logo?
they won't sell a phone without that on it. Could be an early mockup, but still
I can wait...
Hero is the best phone I've had yet, if I can hold onto an Instinct for a yr, I can easily stay with this...
I want a full keyboard android phone. The moment sucks though
Meh. 4.3" screen is too large to carry around day-to-day.
I'll take a Hero-sized device with Snapdragon, thanks.

Maybe you should quit wearin skinny jeans then.
Im rockin this bad boy when my upgrade comes back up Oct. 11, 2010.
Ha Ha. Skinny jeans. I think im gonna rock the fanny pack again and pick this sucker up. Cant get rid of my skinny jeans.
I have been really impressed with Android so far despite the fact that the Hero is "officially" still stuck on 1.5...
I'm still primarily a WinMo user (personal phone: Sprint Touch Pro running VetVito's newest ROM), but my work got my dept a Hero as a remote-support/on-call phone, which actually kind of backfired as we were expecting it would have VPN (the Sprint Rep told us it would), so I have been testing out the custom Hero ROMs trying to find one with functional VPN (i.e. 1.6/2.0/2.1). No luck yet, but there are a couple new ROMs out in the last few days that I haven't had a chance to try yet...
But in regard to my personal phone, I am really hoping that Sprint will have a phone w/ a larger screen by the time my upgrade comes back up in Feb. I would totally go for an Android phone, but being that I have been primarily a WinMo user since ~2001 I am pretty exited about WinMo 7 coming out, too bad they won't have any phones actually released until well after I will use my next upgrade...
But I am praying that Sprint will either get the Android 2.1 update for the Hero or another Android phone that comes with 2.1 by the time I upgrade, I really like the Hero but I am going to go with the most current OS I can...
And Snapdragon + a bigger screen would rock!
I agree...I don't want a phone bigger in size than my Hero, but I would like a full screen from top to bottom with smaller buttons, the buttons on the bottom and that stupid trackball could go and I'd be even happier...
I saw a Droid on the train I take home and there is no way I could carry that thing around all day.

Let's be real for a minute... I want 2.1 as bad as anyone, and it's really frustrating not to have it since there have been leaked roms floating around for a couple months... but riddle me this:
Other than the Droid and Nexus 1, which phones have received a 2.x update?
HTC isn't any further behind the 8 ball than anyone else in this regard.

No phones from anyone anywhere have received a 2.x update. Period.
It looks like the Hero will actually end up being among the first, if not the first, to receive it.
No love for the trackball??? I personally love it...living in Denver I don't want to have to pull my gloves off to look at the widgets. I wouldn't mind an optical 'trackball'.
And for the size, I'm not sure yet if it's to big. I would love to check it out once it's out and see if it's pocketable and sized right for day to day use. My guess is that 4.3" is probably about as big as you'd ever want to go before it simply becomes a tablet...

Seen as there are no phones released for WP7 they had to use some sort of prop for the video!
from the still of the video, I'd say it's either not an HD2 (you can guess only from camera lens and leds), or they went so far as to model it to look thicker and with "rounder" edges.
Still, the fact that they did so much to camouflage it being an HD2 (admitting it actually is), if nothing else, proves that they didn't want to give too many hopes about hd2 getting WM7,otherwise it would have been a good idea to take the most succesful WM device on the market right now and put it in a WM7 video...
Sure, but I have no doubt that WM7 will be running on the HD2 soon after release (if not before.) It uses a newer version of the Windows CE core, so it isn't that inconceivable that it will find its way to the HD2, one way or another. Not sure what all the fuss is about, really. After seeing the videos, the interface is not that great. It is better than 6.5, but Microsoft has NEVER been known for its design strength or esthetic sense. Sure, the guy who was a designer for Nike is responsible for it, but how much do tennis shoes and cellular phone UI's have in common?
I hate the fact that MS has decided to take the position that they have with regard to the UI, but if history shows us anything, this "limit" will mean nothing. Any barrier they put up will eventually be crossed by someone.
I still think that Sense is the best mobile UI experience, and I really like it on the HD2. Microsoft has publicly stated that they will continue development on WM 6.5, so I hope that it gets updated, along with Sense, to preserve what is special about the HD2 user experience. It's just cool, and it does everything I needed my phone to do... even more so with custom ROMs.

Looks like an iPhone to me
A mocked up photo no more means an upgrade for the HD2 than a mocked up photo of a car on the moon means that it is capable of space flight!
Leaks aside, I can't see HTC rushing to provide an upgrade for a device that will be nudging a year old come the time WM7 hits the market. It's rather more likely that MS are teeing up device manufacturers for the next generation of phones. Any link to the HD2, even tenuous ones like the phone in the video, may be because the HD2 is one of very few devices capable of running their alpha/proof of concept.
As to whether I actually want the upgrade...looks OK-ish but seems to be moving too far towards the 'I won't like it if it's too hard and needs me to think for myself' brigade of Apple-loving iWhingers for my tastes. Of course this is all still essentially speculation.
lucky we got htc sence because the OS 7 interface looks ugly
if wm7 doesnot support other ui ,then all the years of development done by htc untill reaching htc sense 2.5 will be threw to rubbish as all future htc phones will not have htc sense , may be hd2 is the last device to use sense 2.5 in htc windows product line ,

there is always potential for windows 6.7 upgrade for future devices
There actually will be concurrent and continued development of WM 6.5, per Microsoft's direct statements, and Sense UI will continue to be used in other platforms, most notably, Android, so Sense is safe for the foreseeable future. I don't think HTC will scrap it, nor should they do so.
I love the Sense UI, and I wish that MS would adopt it as the stock UI in WM7, but they never asked me.
Seriously, can you imagine how it could be improved if it wasn't just a skin, but actually a part of the OS itself?
Sorry, but the Xperia X1 has been also in WM6.5-promos and it has never got an update...

WP7 just barely works during some of the video presentations I've seen today. In a couple of the videos, the presenter had to go back to the home panel a few times and try again or just continue on to the next feature.
It might be December before it comes out and then most of you guys will be lusting after the HD3.
Isn't HTC going to have a press event tomorrow at MWC? Maybe someone will ask a question on whether or not the HD2 will receive an upgrade to WP7?

Unfortunately it will run wp7, which tears my heart out that it doesn't have android. Hopefully there will be someone that will root it and be able to install android on it since android is open source.
Pretty much identical to the evo with a better processor, .2 bigger screen, amoled display, 16gb internal storage with 32gb support of sd card, 1gb ram (vs 512mb on evo).
Camera will be probably as ****ty as evo, but it still lacks android. idk how well wp7 will perform but from what i've seen android is a lot better in my mind.
Might wait a few months after it's release to see if it gets rooted and droided to buy it. Even with hardware specs, I don't think I could make a move to wp7 from android.
wow, definitely too bad that's for winmo
Surely a comparable (or better) EVO successor won't be too far off
C'ya sucka!
The hardware is not that much better. The real selling point of any phone now is OS. And Android is a clear winner to me. WM7 or WebOS may be awesome in the future...but it will take time to catch up, especially in apps.

uhm yes there is. amoled > lcd, up to 48gb of data, 2x amount of ram (meaning more 3d apps, and faster performing phone), and as we know the .3 inch on screen makes a HUGE difference, another .2 will be killer, and the processor is newer (still snapdraggon but newer).
It's like taking all the good things about an evo, and then taking all the good things about epic and putting it together, plus some more. If this phone is released and not just another rumor, it would kill iphone4. Same hardware specs pretty much plus bigger screen, and 4g. Then all the iphone4 fan boys will stop jacking off at the sight of their phone.
The only minus is wp7, but i'm pretty sure that some dev is going to figure a way to run android on it. An android phone will never run wp7 because wp7 is not open source, but android is and so is htc sense. Meaning that someone will be able to port the same exact rom as htc stock to it, but this might or might not happen.
IMO Android will see a similar device. Hopefully Sprint picks it up.

it's not open source per say, but with the right kernel it can be packaged into the phone.
And as for multi tasking, it does offer it. you can have multiple first party apps running. It's just limiting the 3rd party apps from running because of battery issues. I've talked to multiple people that have tested out wp7 and they say battery is conserved REALLY well by doing this. Cutting down on third party apps draining battery. And that htc has a smaller battery than the evo, but i bet the one on hd3 lasts longer.
But this all doesn't matter since I'm not looking to get wp7. You guys took me as if I was supporting wp7. The hardware would do wonders for android, hence why i want to see a port before i buy it.
BUT then again, from some sources that have told me that you will be able to play xbox arcade games on it which use some AMAZING 3d graphics for a phone, versus android which has well pretty ****ty 3d games.
and as far as navigating and calling goes, you will be able to accomplish that easily. And stream music, just not from subsonic.

I'm 99% sure it's fake. That photo has been circulating around for a very long time now. If the CPU spec is faked, so is the rest of it. With the HD3 expect nothing more than the Desire HD but with more storage -- maybe a update to the single core 1.3 GHz CPU.

Uh, what are you smoking? The Shift has 512 mb ram.
And the only difference with this phone and the EVO appears to be a .2 inch difference on the screen, and super amoled.
You'd still be trading in a higher resolution, 3D, and a dedicated camera button for this phone.
I look at it this way. I won't be due for upgrade til January, so I'll looking in December, at what's out there. My only mistake with the Evo was that it was already out 6 months when I got it, although it was good in that a LOT of development had already been done on it, still, my next upgrade will be a newer device.

4.5"!!! Dear lord. After having an Evo, I want my next phone to be a 4"... of course it seems like the specs go up with screen size, which is stupid. I don't see awesome specs in anything less than a 4.3 these days.
The Evo 3d and Sensation will both have locked bootloaders(so the rumors say) plus the 3d has a ****ty 5mp camera(ok 2 of them but who the hell cares about taking 3d pics?) and the sensation has no 4G and only 1GB of internal memory(WTF HTC?).. Also this phone(as well as the Galaxy S 2) is made by Samsung. So, while you may be positively torn by this difficult decision, I assure you that I speak for many of us here when I say "MEH, I'm good with my Evo".

My only mistake with the Evo was that it was already out 6 months when I got it, although it was good in that a LOT of development had already been done on it, still, my next upgrade will be a newer device.

I feel the opposite of you. I got my Evo in March of this year and I am glad I waited. My friend recently got a Thunderbolt when it was only out 2 weeks and there were barely any ROMS for it, it was a NIGHTMARE to root and he had hardware problems(which supposedly will be fixed in later versions). However when I got my phone, it had a TON of dev work done on it, and the hardware kinks were sorted out. Of course if you don't wanna root/flash etc then a brand new phone would do great. But I wouldn't want one. Not to mention you never know when the newest phone will be a success or not. Some phones never "take off" and so the Devs don't do much for them. But by getting a slightly older phone I was able to make sure that the there was a large DEV community devoted to it. Some of the device forums for android phones are down right depressing in their lack of goodies!!
Lol, to crush? Really?

The Evo 3d and Sensation will both have locked bootloaders(so the rumors say) plus the 3d has a ****ty 5mp camera(ok 2 of them but who the hell cares about taking 3d pics?) and the sensation has no 4G and only 1GB of internal memory(WTF HTC?).. Also this phone(as well as the Galaxy S 2) is made by Samsung. So, while you may be positively torn by this difficult decision, I assure you that I speak for many of us here when I say "MEH, I'm good with my Evo".

the new 5mp sensors should be better than our 8mp ones, just because of quality. iphone's 5mp KILLS our 8mp any day. so this to me says the 3d will be better than the evo in every way (minus kickstand, and maybe the dreaded bootloader lock, in which case the sgs2 will be the best probably)

Uh, what are you smoking? The Shift has 512 mb ram.
And the only difference with this phone and the EVO appears to be a .2 inch difference on the screen, and super amoled.
You'd still be trading in a higher resolution, 3D, and a dedicated camera button for this phone.

My mistake, I was talking about the rom. Also, I was only speaking of the actual hardware of the 2 phones, not the features of them.

That's really just an assumption tho. The reason(according to my google search) that we have crappy cameras isn't the sensor it's the fact that the video has to be compressed as it's recorded(even for stills) to the SD card. SD cards are slow. iPhones don't have them. They don't need the compression. The same manufacturer actually makes the cameras for both HTC Evo and Iphone 4. I'm not a DEV so if that's not true don't blame me that's just what I'm reading. Anyway, since the Evo3D has only 4g Internal it's a pretty safe bet that they will still be writing to an SD card. So unless HTC has figured out how to compress better(and that may not even be possible for all I know) then I'm very worried that the camera's won't be better at all. But if the 5mps look better than the 8mps we have now, and IF there is no locked bootloader then and only then would I even consider an Evo 3D. So here's hoping that they read this post and scrap them all and start over! We want our kickstand!
**** the Whales, Save Our Kickstands!
When will a andriod phone be developed with internal memory like a iphone?
sent from my evo, *****!
I currently use a Mytouch 3g so an update is long overdue. I am looking to buy a phone by the end of this month that I will be using with T-Mobile in US and also in UK while I'm studying there next year. The phones that I am currently looking at are:
1. Nexus S
2. HTC Sensation
3. Mytouch 4G
Probably in that order... I have read quite a bit of reviews but just wanted to find out what people feel about this phone who use it day to day.
Also, how annoying is the lack of a notification LED?
Thanks.
nexus S definitely. For the lack of notification LED, I just rooted mine with netarchy kernal that supports BLN (black light notifications). Or if you don't want to root your phone can you use noLED on the android market. I personally prefer BLN as it saves more power by using only the bottom menu buttons for notifications.
The HTC Sensation is a really nice phone, it is newer too, but it has a locked bootloader.
The lack of a notification light is a non-issue as long as you have a custom kernel, which can use the back light on the buttons for a notification light.

Well, these are the nexus S forums so obviously you will hear from a lot of satisfied owners that this phone is the best.
The nexus line will always be getting the latest updates as soon as they are released, so will you always have the latest software. I also, personally, consider it the best single core android phone on the market. Using some tweaks I am able to play "nvidia tegra" optimized games at 50-60 fps and the phone feels generally very responsive. If you root it, a notification LED won't be missed since we have this app called BackLightNofication control (BLN) which lights the buttons when you receive a msg or mail. It works just like a notification led.
On the other hand, the HTC Sensation has better hardware and is currently HTC's flagship phone. Despite the fact that the nexus S will always have up to date software, rooted users will probably have it on the Sensation as well, maybe a few weeks later. So I would call the sensation a bit more future proof.
BUT! if you're looking for a monster device you should consider the samsung galaxy S II. It is currently the best smartphone on the market in terms of hardware and is definitely more future proof then the sensation. Not only that, but its cheaper then it and will most likely have a bigger developer community (3 million devices were already purchased all over the world).
lvnatic, I actually considered SGSII but the only issue is that it will not have 3g on T-Mobile USA so I would only be able to use while I'm in Europe. Also, unless I am mistaken, I don't think they have found an exploit to root the sensation. There are custom sensation roms but they are for a few developer phones that have S-Off. Thanks for your feedback. I might still get the SGSII because I will primarily be in the UK (studying) over the next two years.
There might be a dual core nexus, get that.

He says he needs a phone by the end of the month, not the end of the year.

When the TMo one comes out, there is a chance. But then again you need one by the end of the month.
tbh.
Nexus S is a amazing phone. Sure it's not on top of the hardware specs but it is still a relatively fast phone. The dual core phones coming out right now are still running Froyo (or Gingerbread) which are not optimized to be used for dual cores.
Whats the point in having newer generation hardware that the software doesn't utilize the two cores? Cores are just marketing. It is a full stock Android experience. Nothing could get better.
Sensation 4G is a really nice phone but Sense UI ruins it for me. Also locked bootloader, sure a OTA will unlock it. But when?
Updates coming directly from Google is way better than coming from the manufacturer. Think about Ice Cream Nexus users get it the week its announced.
theres always the quad core jesus phone option...
but really, even though the sensation has new hardware, i think the nexus s is still better(as long as its the super amoled version. theres something about the super lcd versions that leave a sour taste in my mouth. and it snot just the screen).

I'm not bothered at all by the lack if an LED. I honestly don't see the issue.
The only real problem I have with my Nexus S is the lack of an SD card slot. It hasn't hindered my experience in anyway, just more of an annoyance than anything.
If you want stock android and ease of flashing roms get the Nexus. If you want Sense go with the Sensation. Its a very solid phone.
Might want to wait for the next Nexus if you have patience.
The NS is awesome with its curved screen. Very fast, very slick, very moddable
