Chrash corse in development - Acer Iconia A500

Hello, XDA, I need a lot of help. I have a Samsung Fascinate and an Acer Iconia Tab a500 and I really want to begin developing for the tablet. If any devs could tell me good programs to use or any tips, I would greatly appreciate it.
Wow, I spelled just about every thing wrong in the title...

And I thought chrash was some new shell command like chmod and chown.

If you google how to android development or something like that, there's a decent amount of articles and videos that can be rather helpful, I went through some eclipse Java tutorials that were rather nice a while back.

Another good thing - play with and modify the Google example apps provided on their developer site.
I learned Android development in about a week while recovering from back surgery by writing "MilesTrac Free" on a laptop from bed, and it was my first Java app. I do have a very strong background in software development though.

Team Komin (The New QAM)

Hello Everyone,
If you have not read there was a post made by vbhines wanting to start a group named QAM which is a development group completely for the android community (specifically the samsung captivate for the moment). This means no more flaming, no more trolling, no more blaming other people for stealing, no more fighting!
"We are a community for the community."
My plans for this group is to help improve the experience of any phone that we develop for. We will help out anyone that is in need meaning that if an app or a kernel or anything that will help improve the experience of android on our phones we may or may not make that specific item that is requested or wanted etc.
Since we are a community for a community everything we will be releasing will be open source so whatever way we choose (more then likely on github) to release the source of our work you will be able to get it. Our documentation will be the best possible.
We will always be looking for more contributors to this group/cause. It doesn't matter what you can do it only matters if you help out and don't ruin the work flow . Developers will always be in need as well as UI/Graphic Designers. People that will help out with documentation would be fantastic so that we will always be well organised. We would like this group to be as diverse as possible.
We want to be a much more mature development group so our releases will be well tested so updates come less often which means your experience will be much better since you do not have to flash so often.
We already have quite a good backing by some new up and coming developers who have quite a nice background and we are hoping for more backing by the rest of the community.
I will be updating this more and more because there are more things to come.

P.S.
vbhines allowed me to take over this group because he is much to busy. He will be joining us later when his life is not so hectic and he is happy to help us in any way.
I'm glad to see this taking off!
I'm excited to see how quickly and well this is all coming together.

Hi everyone, I would really love to help this open source project along! However im afraid my only actually skills are a little bit of photoshop manipulation. I would appreciate it if everyone listed good books or web pages to learn programming from. Its been one of my many dreams to actually develop for android . Thanks in advanced and im glad to see the direction this project is taking

Yes its up and running. You sure you got the right server and everything?
Alright guys the site is up and running I just need to setup categories for the forum and we should be good to go! Everything should be done by today depending on how fast I finish up homework etc. I am hoping it will be done though.
We will start a lot more development this weekend. Since I wont have anything to do plus I have 2 weeks off.
The plans for this weekend is to setup a hierarchy and actually establish developers etc.

Just posted the website to the OP. Yes its teamkomin.com.
I have a little bit more to do. I need to add custom menus the navigation so the forum will be implemented. The forum page is http://www.teamkomin.com/forum/
I'm going to hop over to irc tomorrow. I'm best on the debugging end, but not yet in apk modding minus the lg launcher below. I've got to crash this evening, but ill be around tomorrow eve.
(Did also try and help xcal with alittle on his kernel and the headset issue, but he ended up cracking it himself... him and I went back and forth with pms for weeks....)
I would love to help however I can. I have some Java and C experience (not a whole lot, i can debug) and extensive web design experience. Let me know.

[Q] tutorial for building a rom from sdk

Plz read this and leave some feedback. My device is lacking developers compared to other devices. We have like maybe 2 true developers that know their way around code and what not. So i am trying my best to learn how to build roms. I recently taught myself how to port a rom and was semi successful in that it works except the normal problems like wifi, gps, etc.
Now the question. It there a tutorial on how to build a rom from sdk? Im seeing honeycomb roms pop up for other devices based on sdk. I would like to build a honeycomb rom for my device as well. I am clueless when its comes to code so i am currently reading up on things like "c++ for dummies" and other helpful books. im asking for either helpful links that a newbie can figure out with some reading and learning or guidance (if you're that patient).
Any helpful comments are welcome! Thx
Edit: been google searching before posting this thread and havent really stumbled upon anything too helpful. Just throwing that out so no one goes "it called a search, noob" lol

Best Way To Learn Android?

Hey everyone I would like to know the best way to start learning android. To start off I know that Java is heavily used and so is XML. XML is usually the theming part and Java is for Rom building if I'm correct. I'd like to know how to go about learning it and which path to take first. Do I buy books? Do I follow guides online? Do I look up youtube videos? Also do I have to be smart to learn Java or XML. I am no genius but I consider myself pretty smart if I use repetition and keep pushing myself to learn which I am fully capable of doing. If someone could tell me on how to go about learning Android Development that would be great.
Thanks,
Sean Myers
could anyone please help me out here??

Nice link I might give something a try. I did try and find some books but they werent in enough detail for what I needed for our phones. Besides java, xml,.png isnt some linux? Going through lots of lines code?
You do need to know some linux because some of the rom has to be done in a linux os.

Yeah... I was gonna say, google has a sdk and all that that, they'd be the best place to find info on their OS and how to develop for it.

Try to create and deploy the "Hello Android" app described here:
(I can't post external links until I have 8 posts here, sorry:
developer.android.com/guide/tutorials/hello-world.html )
I did it under Windows XP using eclipse, and deployed it to the emulator running on my PC and to my unrooted stock DroidX (Android 2.2) as my first Android project.
Knowledge of XML is always a good thing, but not required in that tutorial.
Once you have a basic app working and deployable, you can modify it to try more advanced things.

do developers tend to have professional education in linux or are most of us self educated?
there is a vast amount of information out there. where woukd you send someone with little to no kniwledge of linux to learn the basics? i read and read posts, but often i am behind the curve on the basics so i cant understand all of the posts.
last question. if i run ubuntu on my computer will i be learning the same basic stuff for both ubuntu and android, as far as development goes? commands and logic? so far xda has been by far the best source of information. been reading the android developer page. its interesting.
Try the "Hello Android" book. It really helped me get the sense of the Android OS. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1934356565/ref=redir_mdp_mobile/189-8058323-8893839 let me know what you think?

[Q] developing roms, where to start?

With the newly deodexed honeycomb I have gotten the itch to start looking into how to create/develop my own rom.
What is the best way to start learning, is there a good starting point, I have been doing some reading but it just seems so overwhelming.
I do have basic Linux knowledge and can whip up a linux VM in no time to get crackin. I have been modding my EVO for the last year so i know how to be a "user" and have tinkered with the xoom but have only scratched the surface.
So my question is just this, Where to start??
any input would be helpful.
+1!
need a little walkthrough too :S!!
and someone can say what files NEVER EDIT to not brick the xoom!!
i too would be highly interested in learning what steps to take.

Get that VM set up, and get your environment set up so you can build AOSP.
Look through the source so you know what parts of Android are found where in the tree.
Learn a little about the platform, what does what...
Basically, just get your hands dirty.

so this is kind of what I expected for an answer but I would like a little more if you dont mind.
Like maybe a couple of links pointing in the right direction, like what does the environment need for tools etc.

That's like saying jump in a lions den and see what ticks him off. Can we get more details please? I want to get into theming and want to know the ideal OS to do it on. I was hoping on doing it in Linux but want advice from themers.
IV been playing hippie for a couple of weeks so I don't know if I missed something but, unless the full AOSP source has been released, a deodex rom will help with nothing but theming.
You can't do much to customise a ready built rom, and you would be wasting your time to try anything but the simplest of mods.
That being said, if you're happy to play with smali you might achieve a little more.

this is exactly what I am talking about here, This is kind of why I brought it up in the xoom forum, since we dont have source and we do have a deodexed rom wouldnt playing with that be a great place to start? if so like what would be the best place to start, you say play with smali, now I know I can google and get tons of answers but I am asking to explain a little more because I trust the feedback from here and I think others might benefit also

Smali is a tool that will reverse engineer (baksmali) dalvik byte code into (barely) human readable code. If you can learn to understand this you can reverse and modify stuff with it. If i remember right, brut.all is the guy responsible, have a read around, but i warn you, its not for the feint of heart.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=667298

ps thanks for the replys
I think the best way to learn anything is just to read a lot, and to search for any questions you have. There are a thousand ways to learn to hack, but they all require the initiative to find answers on your own.
Sorry if this sounds patronizing. I always hated it when I get on a board and ask for something, and some curmudgeon geek tells me "Google is your friend". But it's true. You get better answers faster, as you can avail from the entire Internet, as opposed to the small number of people who reply to your query.
Thanks to the dude who linked to the Cyan advice post. My takeaway is this one line:
"There is a *ton* of information out there but any kind of "step-by-step rom cooking guide" is going to be a complete fail- it's too broad of a subject."
IMO if you are serious about ROM hacking, you need a dedicated linux environment. Cygwin is OK for run-time stuff, but too limited for anything else. If you only want to run basic bash commands, a simpler solution is win-bash (http://win-bash.sourceforge.net).
I'm kinda in the same shoes you are. Android interests me, although I don't have a Xoom or an Android tablet for that matter. Was gonna get a HC tab to tinker, but HC is still too green, so decided on a Nook Color for educational purposes. It's been out a while, and has many hacks already done that I can peruse. That, and it'll be useful for my "read a lot" mantra above.

I'm a noob - LOVED the registration video!

I’m a noob – LOVED the video
Hello, I have a ton of questions, but, after watching the registration video I would feel guilty if I asked any of them! So I’m writing just to introduce myself. My name is Valerie. I am a software engineer by education (and 15 years experience) but now I am a system engineer and I’ve been away from computer geekiness for about 6 years. I have just bought a Kindle Fire and I am excited to embark on an adventure back to geekdom. 
My purchase of a KF was motivated by a) the discovery of an equestrian app that I would like to have that is available for the Android, b) the price point of the KF, and c) the knowledge that the KF can be rooted.
However, since I am new to the whole Kindle and Android world (I do not own any Android devices), there is a lot of terminology and slang that I am unfamiliar with. I am reading the KFFB, and the supplement to KFFB that describes how to root/install a ROM, unroot/revert to stock, etc. and trying to absorb them, but I think I’ll have to read them a couple of times before they really sink in.
My goal is to load the latest Android operating system (Jelly Bean?) on my KF and be able to run all the fun Android apps.
What is a little bit confusing is to me right now is the fact that there are multiple descriptions of the steps in the rooting process available on the web, each with its own list of required software utilities that you must obtain first, and I don’t have warm fuzzy feeling that I know exactly which process is the most up-to-date, and which process is the best one for me to use. But, I shall keep reading. If someone can point me to the most up-to-date source, that would be awesome and I would be most grateful 
I also have a general question about sideloading. If I sideload a non-Amazon Kindle Fire app before I do the rooting, can I still run that app afterwards? Since Kindle Fire is based upon Android 2.3, the idea of running a Kindle app vs. an Android app is still a little confusing. The basic question of “Isn’t a “Kindle” app already an “Android” app?” is stuck in my mind. Oh well, as I said, I’ll keep reading …
Anyway, I just wanted to say Hello and I can’t wait to root my KF but I want to make sure I have all the right info before I do.
Thanks,
Valerie

I am a noob myself, also loved the video, but I have rooted my KF and flashed to gedeROM (LOVING IT)
In my experience, which is definitely not all encompassing, all apps I had loaded before flashing were still there. I believe as long as you don't do a system restore (hope I'm right here) your apps will stay put.
Also, I used Kindle Fire Utilities to do most everything, and except for a hitch with returning the KF to normal boot, had no issues at all. After doing it all once, I flashed back to stock to just make sure I could, and then cleared everything and started fresh with gederom again. After you've done it all once, you can do the whole process is about 5 minutes, from root to boot. It really is so much simpler in practice than the steps make it sound...once you've done it, you'll understand.
Oh, and as far as apps downloaded through the Kindle Store. After flashing a new rom, you may need to download the amazon appstore and install it to keep using those apps (I had to.) Once that was done, I was able to use them.
If I've gotten anything wrong here, I will correct or remove it as needed, as this is all from my limited experience
Hi noobs! Figured I'd step on in this room because I to am a noob wait, this is a thread I think? Anyway rooting is really easy... Just go to...
