I'm using DC v1 right now and there is no MNS (Mobile Network Sharing) as of now, so I have made a nand img for you all of the last rom that I used that had MNS working 100%.
I use this ONLY when I need to tether... which is often lol because I live on campus at the University of Miami.
I flashed Flipz's 2.1 v1.8-7 Eclair (which has working MNS) that I had lying around.
Stripped it for JUST tethering, got rid of Sprint crap & the works.
Includes,
Wireless Tether
&
NetCounter. Since there is no display on how much data/wifi you are using, NetCounter is a *free* program on the market that will tell you.
THIS IS A NANDROID IMAGE. DO NOT FLASH AS A .ZIP!!!!!
I am not responsible if this screws anything up. I just posted my nand image.
UNZIP FILE AND PUT FOLDER "2.1_Eclair_Tether" ON YOU SDCARD UNDER:
nandroid > Your serial # >
THEN APPLY LIKE A NORMAL NAND RESTORE.
I have never shared a Nandriod image before, so not even sure if it will work. I DID NOT sign into anything after flashing (google, market, gmail, facebook...) so it is completely stock.
Anyone willing to try this nand restore?
Just trying to help out those who miss MNS.
Also, post your results, would like to know if sharing nandroid backups could be convenient.

Well then...
For everyone using DC and doesn't want to switch to DarchLegend, not that it's bad, just not wanting to make a big switch.
Ok, well if no one wants to try....
I have a question: Is it even possible to share unlinked Nandroid images from phone to phone?? that's sort of why this is here too, to figure that out.

I flashed an old Nandroid backup onto a replacement phone (different serial, obviously) and it worked fine. Only thing that I had to do afterwards was clear the cache on Gmail for some reason, though I don't think it was related to flashing between different phones since others in the forums have reported the same issue.
Oh...and I'm using EasyTether Lite that I'd downloaded from the market a while back. Works great. I hear that the latest version has some additional limitations though...such as no https sites.
I'm using DC 2.1 and my MNS works fine.
Start up wireless tether, connect with laptop or whatever, disable mobile network, enable mobile network, wireless tether works perfect.
Its a bug, but that is the fix. Only need to do it once I believe.

I'm positive now it was in my MSL thread. I wanted my MSL to change my SIC to 0, and somebody posted how to get it with CDMA workshop etc, well it just went poof, but a sprint employee here at xda helped me get my MSL (Thanks again!), but they were arguing why somebody needed an MSL, and somebody posted about how he used it blah blah fixed tethering.

I'm anxious to see this too. I remember working on my Hero back when tethering on 1.5 discussions were happening, and really the only thing you could do in the CDMA Workshop (I think that's the name of it) was change your email address used as your id to the network from the one that's using PAM to mimic what was being sent during normal data usage. I think in the PAM communication was set blank, and the normal one was set to your id. It didn't work at all actually. It seemed that something else was built into the Android/Sprint stuff in Android that made that impossible. This is basically what you did, albeit through WindowsMobile's registry, to accomplish the same result in windows mobile.
I think in this instance, it's the other way around. Meaning that we have to get around it from a software standpoint so that it doesn't access the Sprint validation to determine whether to use PAM (Phone as Modem) line or normal line (even though it's just an id.)
This is what MNS accomplishes, it gets around that by appearing as normal data, and doesn't cause our Hero to throw error 67 data failure messages.
I may be completely off, but sounds feasible right?

The DX bootloader situation sucks... Hope this brightens up someones day...
This was tested on a Motorola Droid X Froyo 2.2(OTA) Rooted
Requirements:
Root(just kidding)
Stock 3G Mobile Hotspot Application
EasySwitch(Trial) by SmartDyne(Download from Market)
1. Download and Setup EasySwitch Widget
2. Fire up 3G Mobile Hotspot and wait for it to fully connect up (30 seconds?)
- If this is your first time running through this, open up your browser and go somewhere. You should get the Verizon Self Provisioning page... If not, you're wasting your money.
3. Now use EasySwitch to cycle the Radio *Off* then back *On* (Top row, 4th from the left... you must do this every time after you fire up 3G Mobile Hotspot)
Voila...
I know this process could be refined some... Who wants to help? #Free4All <- That was an invitation for dialog.
setNetworkPreference(ConnectivityManager.TYPE_MOBILE)
Update 10/9/10 2:55pm PST:
Who has root and more than 5 wireless devices? I only have 4...
/data/misc/wifi/hostapd.conf
max_num_sta = 5 <-- increase this number.
Someone test this...
Was Easywidget one of the stock widgets? This may have been some of the bloat I removed.
I believe the solutions is an app that does the following:
setNetworkPreference(ConnectivityManager.TYPE_MOBI LE)

No. Please don't come in a thread acting as if you know everything and have some simple fix with a smart alec response. Wireless Tether is ad-hoc mode, as is Barnacle. This method is access point instead, which some people need specifically as opposed to ad-hoc.

No, not a build.prop thing, it's an application programming thing... Long story short, 3G Mobile Hotspot switches your phone's data connection from "TYPE_MOBILE" to "TYPE_MOBILE_DUN", which shuts down you your data connection unless you you are subscribed to the 3G Mobile Hotspot service. Cycling 3G off/on in EasySwitch switches your data connection back to TYPE_MOBILE, while keeping 3G Mobile Hotspot open.

Sound like you might have cycled wifi instead. I was however incorrect in saying to toggle 3G, when what I really meant was to toggle *Cell Service* which is 4th from the left on the top row in EasySwitch. If it's still trippin, let me know what mods and such that you're running. I just figured this out earlier today so i don't know all the permutation of why it might *not* work. TY for the feedback.

3G is actually the Up & Down Arrows on Easy Switch. The Cell tower is just your basic cell service (non 3G), although it IS the one you must toggle.
Just wanted to clear that up.
This works GREAT by the way, thank you very much for posting!

Thanks for clarifying that. Changed the OP so people don't get confused. Guess I should have known that, but I'm new Android and Phone modding in general so some of the basic things slip by me..
Glad you found this useful. Your feedback is much appreciated!
Awesome, but is there any way to do this without EasySwitch?
e.g. adb? terminal emulator?
I just don't care much for payware, let alone crippleware. :/
I tried this at work ( vzw hahaha) on my phone the way you stated and also tried with another coworkers x. His browser redirected him to vzw provisioning page as described, mine did not since I used the method described. However I was still able to connect another phone to both mine and a coworkers phone. Makes me worry about being charged the overage rate. Any ideas?
*update*
When connected to an x, fascinate redirected to vzw provisioning page. So this does work. Question is, will my bill sky rocket Haha. Gonna investigate further.

ATM, I'm have not tested any other apps that are free that can provide the needed functionality. The other apps I saw on the market seemed to just switch between 2G/3G, and not actually cycle the data connection off and on. Flight mode cycles wifi too, so that's a no go. ADB/Terminal... I tried other methods for doing this, pppd up/pppd down... no go..
Again, this works because of VZ tries to switch our data connection from "mobile", to "mobile_dun", to try and ferry us down their pay pipe... Cycling cell service switches us back to a "mobile" connection while keeping the 3G Mobile Hotspot running.
This is a Work In Progress... I believe that a widget could be made to automatically catch when the data connection gets switched over, and hijack it back. I have good idea of API calls in Dalvik necessary to make this happen, but it's been about 10 years since I really got down on programming anything, and my thing was web interfaces with PERL, never really got into Java. I am interested in Android Developement, so I'm currently tinkering with putting this widget together, but I currently don't have the know-how to put it all together. So EasySwitch is kind of my Proof-of-Concept tool.
I feel you, though. EasySwitch is just the current work around. Does the job, though...

This should more or less be equivalent to Barnacle/Wireless Tether. They all just use your "mobile" data connection.
I believe this to be actually more covert than the "Free 3G Mobile Hotspot for Incredible" method, which actually uses VZ's "mobile_dun" pay pipe, and uses the customers "[email protected]" to authenticate.
So, your bill should not skyrocket.

This was another one of the possibilities I had in mind. I don't really understand how to Decompile .APK's. Do you know how to do this? If it is possible to modify the APK, I would actually just bypass the connection switching routine all together, and just move on to starting up the wifi side of things.
<edit>
If you know more about possibly making this work in this way, which actually would be the cleanest method possible, I'd appreciate any kind of help.
</edit>

If you are the only one on your plan, go prepaid, I dont pay extra and the stock tethering under settings works just fine

I searched for the same, tried a number of apps, tried all of these recommended root apps & protocols ended up with the same disappointing result. Most of it just didn't work or no one could provide the necessary tools in proper sequential steps.
With you phone powered on remove your sim card. Go to Mobile hot spot & tethering, activate blue tooth tethering.wait a few minutes put your sim back in. you should now be able to pair devices with your phone and share its internet connection..

Found this in the other threads regarding hotspot. If you download "Network Signal Refresher Lite" from 8JAPPS in the playstore you can use native tethering. Just open the app and hit refresh and the moment you lose service drag down the quick tiles and tap the hotspot button. Been using this on my Moto Z Droid for the past few days and it works perfectly

Use Network signal refresher
Does anyone know of any workarounds? Network Signal Refresher stopped working for me with Nougat as well.
Yesterday they had an update for Network Signal Lite to version 5.0. Didnt work for me.
Today they have another update to version 5.1 hoping it fixes the issue. Just figured I would share.
i take it popping the sim doesn't work as well then. seams as if they might have closed the "if not able to call home let hotspot on anyway" bug then.

I've been doing this, and it does work, but I'm finding it turns itself off after a short time - are you seeing this as well?
Before I updated via OTA to 8.1 the Essential was connecting to LTE without issue. Since 8,1 I have to connect to CDMA and 3g in order to user my Dialer, otherwise Server Error is generated. No calls in or out.
I wanted to downgrade Yes rebooted, factory reset, etc.
I searched google up and down with no real answers that work. How do I get Sideload working again? It has to be a simple configuration or driver problem I will assume.
Thanks

I wrote that post that he referred you to, and while it worked in Oreo 8.0 it does not seem to work in 8.1 for me either.
Try this:
dial *228 and get a PRL update
reboot
*#*#4636#*#* (it may take a few seconds for it to come up if you do it right after a reboot)
set it to LTE/WCDMA
reboot
(you may have to check in mobile network settings that your APN is set to VZWINTERNET)
Let me know how it works out for you. I know that Verizon doesnt support WCDMA, but it forces you over to the Verizon LTE bands which is more or less the goal of this. For some reason this functions differently than any of the other settings that include LTE in them (believe me, I've tried them).

Yep those are how the menu should look for a device that's not locked to sprint. It seems to me there are some firmware files that prefer sprint in these beta builds, because even on other carriers (and more than one person has said this) you can see 'sprint' pop up in the bar or in the settings even when you arent on sprint.
Interesting that yours gives you the option of 'wifi calling provisioned', I cant get that to not be greyed out on mine.

Yeah I've screwed with this phone so much I don't know what I did LOL but now it shows wifi calling even in dialer. I'm not sure if it really works cuz I have a good signal so it never switches. My e911 address is set up from my Moto z and I do have a wear24 watch tied to this phone not sure if that's what triggered it. ? I did get a new SIM card on Monday as well because I was fighting with the vzw crap so I don't know exactly what triggered the WiFi calling.

Thank you for the steps but still cannot use 4G for phone calls, but it does work for internet, facebook, email, etc.
Have to go back to 3G for phone calls.

That's where I'm at too... the one thing that might be different about this is I tried my old steps first before figuring out how to get it to work with these new ones... seems like a lot of effort, but it might be what is needed (or some amount of it) to get it all working. So try going through the old ones before the new ones (you probably dont need to *228 again since you just did)
My old steps linked here (these worked in 8.0, if they work for you in 8.1, more power to you, but they dont work for me):

I'm still routinely messing with it because I feel like the setting I have now prevents me from falling back to CDMA if LTE is unavailable for some reason. Fortunately that is a rarity for me... but I maintain that Essential has something in the ROM itself that is preferring sprint and I think it's screwing with us using Verizon.

There is something there.
I've done that procedure.
If I go into the menu and play around it will try to connect to sprint even with a Verizon SIM. Go figure?

Exactly. If I leave it on certain settings it'll actually sit there and tell me I'm connected to Sprint.

I just reported this to Essential in their beta feedback.
Others should report their similar issues.
It seems to be associated with them making a unified release.
If you look at some releases they are specifically for Sprint or Not.

Try turning off Enchanted 4G LTE Mode. It's possible going to 8.1 just reset this setting to on. This should only be on if you have HD Voice enabled on your line on Verizon (you'll have to call Verizon to enable it, it's a free feature).
This should fix server error on 4G, randomly connecting to Sprint is a separate issue.
UPDATE Now working
Took the advice from someone on Reddit who had the same problem. Ran to VZW store and received a new SIM. Without any programming on my end or reboot, back to LTE without issue. FINALLY. As soon as the rep popped in the SIM the essential connected on its own.

Just wanted to second this post that a new sim card is the key to solving this issue. In my case, I was using Red Pocket CDMA (VZW network), and I ran into the same problem. Red Pocket rep explained to me that my sim got provisioned to 3g only and that I needed a new sim to connect to LTE. As soon as we switched to a new sim, I got LTE. I hope this helps others.
Using the phones on Sprint.
Since three weeks or so, while on LTE, the incoming voice calls are going directly to voice mail.
Sprint looked at it and changed the Network to 3G and now getting a ring for the incoming calls.
Basically, I am forced to run the phones on 3G service.
Need to go to a service center (which is very far for me) to have the phone looked at.
Anyone facing similar issue?
PS: 2 of the 3 PH-1 phones I have, are having the issue.

Google have updated the dialer recently several times, could it be a bug that shows on Sprint, or do you have spam settings on, which I know has caught other people out. Check/play with spam settings in her dialer app.
(other areas I might check (if not dialer or network). I assume all phones were working before correctly, right? Are they different sims or the same sim in different phones? New sims, ie not old one you have cut down hat are old spec. Do lte settings match on different phones?)

Same issue. Did you get it fixed?
I also have this problem on Sprint.
Sometimes restarting the phone fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't.
Between this and no longer being able to use Google Voice without using a separate number, I think it's time for me to bail on Sprint.
My wife had this issue a bit back. Only happened when the phone was using VoLTE (verified by a debug menu, *#*#4636#*#*, showing both voice/text and data marked as LTE).
Fix was to disable the Enhanced 4G LTE communications option, which forced the phone too fallback to nonVoLTE while still using LTE for data. Again confirmed using the phone information menu which showed voice as 1xRTT and data as LTE.
Hope this help and that we can get a better fix soon.

Didn't work for me either but I figured it out... what I had to do is change a setting under Google Voice in Settings under the tab CALLS change to "Use carrier only" and I did have to turn VoLTE off. I left the Preferred network type as LTE. Phone is working well now, with T-mobile and Google Voice I have been testing it all morning.
