[Q] Canadian Xperia Play - Xperia Play General

Hey, just getting my xperia play shipped to me from Rogers. How can i unlock bootloader/root the device? also i want to install directly to SD card seeing as the internal memory is low.
thanks in advance.

You can root your phone using gingerbreak, but you cant unlock the bootloader, because your phone is not factory unlocked.
About installing apps on the SD, there is an adb command to push apps to install directly on sd, check the developers forum...

link please?

[Q] low storage?

after installed a few apps in the flipout, I got the notification saying the fone is low in storage.
is it because I installed all the apps in the phone? well where is the setting for installing apps to the SD card? have been looking it up, but no sign of it really~
any help?
thx a lot!
On android 2.1 you can not install apps on the SD card by default. 2.2 introduced that.
If you install app2card or app2sd, you will be able to put your apps on the SD card. I use app2card.
so... is it possbile to upgrade it to 2.2?
thank you very much!

[Q]Help required on Rooting Xperia Play

Hi All,
I have couple of basic question regarding rooting my xperia play. First of all i am not sure what i want is rooting only, so i will explain my problem, please let me know what i am trying to do is correct or not.
With the device, i got a dumb internal memory. I am a gaming freak, so downloaded most of the games and apps. So now i m running out of memory(Internal + SD card).
Today i purchased 16GB card over 8GB, which solved one problem.
Another problem is with the Internal memory. only 30MB is free currently.
1) Somewhere i read that if i root the device, i can force move all the applications to the SD card. so i decided to root. Is this the only solution?
2) I am following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043630
thread for rooting, can you please let know the OS image mentioned in there is the latest?
3) If there are multiple flavors of OS for xperia play, can you please let me know which the best OS to flash?
Thanks,
Harsha

@AndroHero:
Thanks for your help. It really helped me a lot. With the help of App 2 SD i moved all possible apps to SD. Now internal memory has 130MB free.
I have some more questions,
1) After i move any game to SD, i could still see its presence in internal memory but in few KB's. Is this the data of my progress in that game?
2) How to move already pre-installed games to SD? Also a game called "Crash......" i want to un-install.
3) Going forward, with installing new games and apps, i may run out of internal memory again, that's the time to root?
Thanks,
Harsha

1. Not too sure but I know it leaves a footprint in your internal memory.
2. Use Titanium Backup to remove them and then reinstall the apk to force them to the sd card. I did this with fifa, sims, etc.
3. Yes

help needed for rooting with gingerbreak!

hello everyone!
i am using a sgs gt-i9000 with 2.3.3
i want to root my device with gingerbreak v1.2
i read the instructions, but i still have some questions.
1. does the phone have to be connected to PC when i click the 'ROOT' button?
2. is an external sd-card necessary while rooting? (i generally don't use external sd card)
3. after rooting, all my internal memory apps and data will be deleted right?
i mean will only the apps be deleted or all my images and everything also?
Please help me! I want to get my phone rooted asap!
Thank you very much!
1) Use the CF-Root method to root your phone. PC connection is not needed as you will flash it in the recovery mode.
2) Nope, an external sd card is not needed as well.
3) Rooting your phone will not wipe any applications or data.

Running android from sd card?

Looking to install android on a sd card like this http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/03/04/psa-please-dont-pay-80-for-a-nook-color-sd-card-that-runs-honeycomb/. This is going to my grandmother so I was looking for a simple solution so she could boot either by inserting and removing the sd card. Can CM7 run this way? And does this method still work, and do I need to root?

Yes it can be done and no you do not have to do anything to the stock software on the main memory. Follow this guide:

There is a brand new CM7 (7.2-RC1) build just released. Get it here:

How to save/move Apps to SD card?

Hi could anyone tell me how to save Apps to an SD card in my Z2?
You cant... its because Google decided to restrict it in 4.4

You can't, read about the restrictions of KitKat. and if you have root you can use an app to do that.
Seriously? Can't believe I just found out... what is the point of this restriction? is andriod trying to copy Apple with their restricted iphone storage?

I don't think Google likes SD cards, and they try to promote their Google Drive. None of the Nexuses have SD card slots.

What about applications though, you can exactly move them to cloud to free up space. The Z2 only has 16gb and with apps getting bigger and bigger that's really going to be a big limitation.

So your apps use 12GB storage? That is how much free space you have. For backup apps you can just move the backup folder to SD card. You can have Nandroid backup on SD card aswell.
Also music and films go to SD card. There are exploits for Spotify to move the folder to the SD card.

You should be able to save photos/videos to SD card still (there's an option in the camera app).
There is an option to transfer data like videos, photo's & music in "storage" , which I know does not solve the problem but is good news for Z2 developers because this shows that it's possble to do it & create roms with that purpose in mind...
There's no problem on galaxy devices coz their native folder manager "My files" bypasses this restriction.
I hope Sony creates their own native manager to fix that!

Try a Xposed module named XInternalSD
Try foldermount. On my Z2 it works but I have the premium version. I am not sure if it also works with the free version.

Free version should work also, I believe difference is in number of pairs allowed.
Thanks for the reply guys! I tried folder mount and it indeed worked for me. But i have another concern, i dont know if its just my phone or others are also having this issue. Do you have problem installing some apps? It says No space available but i still have 9gb available in my internal card. Hope u can suggest what i can do to install any app i want. Thank you!

Let's go out on a limb here but have you tried folder mount?
Still can't do it with new update?
So let me get this straight, even with the new update(4.4.4), you still can't move apps to sdcard on the Z2???
I'm unrooted/stock, just got the device, but I'm shocked to know this, I should've looked more into it before making the purchase. I have link2sd, and I noticed it just takes me to the app in app info(which I could do by myself through settings), and I still don't have an option to move apps to sd card.
Am I missing something? I have to root to move apps to sdcard with the z2 on the latest stock rom and firmware??
I didn't want to start a new thread and saw this one, among others.
