Fanastic news - Fascinate General

Hopefully this includes us older phones. Proof they are making updates for us. Maybe GB soon enough

It better be true xD even tho I plan on getting the sgs2 but ima keep my fascinate as a back up

I doubt they will grandfather in our fascinates, in their eyes it's nearing the end of it's life cycle. The next gen will get the awesome sauce from that deal.

Mehhh, we got a mostly working CM7 build now anyway.

I'm pretty sure that they're referring to Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS as they are calling it). It sounds like what our Devs are doing to port over CM7 on the Froyo kernel.
And I read that the phone will be supported for 18 months from release date which will be extremely nice.
For them to be able to do this, I think it'll require what our Devs are doing...

Really, they're calling it ICS?
That's funny, that's the acronym I've always heard for Internet Connection Sharing, lol

For the moment I am very content with my phone, I think as long as manufacturers keep the phones fully up to date users have really nothing to whine about.

So after 18 months your phone is released, they wont care anymore?
Might just be interpreting it incorrectly...

After 18 months you can get a new phone, so no they won't care.
I doubt this is for older phones. Seems to be just a future plan.

Well, we did finally get Froyo (officially), and it's less fattening than Ice Cream anyway

POLL: Gingerbread Speculation

This is my first Motorola phone and I actually hopped to ATT for the Atrix and so far, I really dont have anything bad to say.
Now that my intro is done... anyone have any insight when MOTO/ATT will push Gingerbread to the Atrix?
I'm hoping summer... what does everyone else think?
edit: when I poll for winter, its winter at the end of this year, not right now....
So far we're speculating for fall...
Hopefully with the attention that MOTO has with the Atrix and the Xoom, maybe they'll hire some extra engineers to push something by summer...
look at Milestone, they still on 2.1.
so I guess we won't get 2.3 until 2012
I really hope they upgrade directly to Ice Cream in winter, skipping Gingerbread. Ah well, hope springs eternal, as they say...
Crap in one hand and wait on gingerbread in the other, see which one gets full first.
It is bs the phone should not have been released without gingerbread.
They are already developing ginger bread. Look in dev forum. Someone had a dev dump if ginger bread at some point
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
gingerbread is pointless.
ice cream is what we need. I rather have them skip gingerbread and work straight onto ice cream.

Actually Motorola are known to update their flagship phones. The milestone never for updated because it was not one. The Droid x was released with 2.1, updates to 2.2 and will be getting 2.3 soon.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Since the Atrix is a flagship dual-core, I think we'lll see it sooner rather than later. Especially since we have a Gingerbread dump in the dev forum already... that's some nice signs for a spring/summer update.
Its really interesting seeing the wide range of dates when people think we'll get it.
I would really like to see the update soon, but it doesn't look likely. It is more likely I will end up with the Galaxy S2 / iphone 5 or some new HTC phone before we see an update.

CM7 The Only Hope For Epic 4G?

As this community slowly declines one can't help but think, is CM7 the only thing we have left to look forward to?
I don't know if we can or not. We managed to troll/eta ourselves into getting the thread closed.

Not really i mean we've got ACS... Bonsai ...MidNight.... Nebula (hopefully)... MIUI .... all this should kick off shortly.
but i mean after gingerbread... then what ? Gingerbread is already pretty old so i mean...
I don't know guys, maybe samsprint will surprise us.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
As much a my phone would love some ice cream sandwich, I highly doubt samsprint will officially support it for the epic. While gingerbread was a nice treat (pun intended). I beielve this will be the last official update. But hey hopefully the devs can work some magic...if there are ay left by then!
From cellblock D
Reaction to Official GB will Reveal All
I suspect the reaction to the official gingerbread release will tell us. I suspect we'll see a flurry of the standard players after the GB release, Bonsai (my favorite), ACS, etc. However, they will quickly reach the point where they have done all they can do, (i.e. applied all the currently known tweaks/patches).
After that, it's really CM. CM7 development (based on commits) seems to have slowed a bit after a flurrish at the end of May. If the CM7 team is able to get it stable based on the official GB source, the Epic can then ride the CM train for a while. If that doesn't happen, I expect 1-2 revisions of tweeked ROMs based on GB from each team, particularly Bonsai and ACS and then development on the Epic will be done.
More tasty deserts with CM7.

I agree if we are lucky we may get an ice cream sammich. With CM7 we can get timely upgrades of more tasty deserts like jelly beans, kiwi pudding, lemon meringue pie, etc, etc....
Not even looking at icecream sandwitch, if we get to CM7, we will not just get major updates, but we'll get regular, minor releases as well. Those can provide additional featuers. (I'd personally LOVE to get the granular permissions control thats being added to CM7.) If we don't get to CM7, we can dream about ICS, but in reality, we're unlikely to get features and instead only get ROM tweeks (and kernel modules).
Also we will have continued development and not have development stop because of lack of source code. That is what I hate most about not being on cyanogenmod. With the lawsuit with apple Samsung should seriously consider working more with cyanogenmod and just dump touch wiz all together. In my opinion touch wiz is not all that impressive and serious limits the phone's compatibility.

ya im really hopin once 2.3 comes out the CM7 team will get everything on track. i agree with the fact CM7 will more than likely be our last hope after 2.3 comes out, atleast for those who want to stay up to date with an older handset which has great hardware regardless. single core or not, epic has been a dream phone to me, especialy coming from the moment(touch pro 2, touch pro, mogul and ppc 6700 before that. i wont ever go all touch, KB is too important for me). the devs on here are great and keep guys like us loving our phones but i also dont forsee ICS coming to the Epic, even though google made an announcement that android phones will be updated to new software at minimum of 18months AFTER release, although that announcment was made more than 6 months after the epic came out. sucks that this phone hasnt even hit the 1 year mark yet and we are already at EOL even on firmware side. hopefully google puts the pressure on the manufacturers AND service providers for these updates regardless of when they announced that. only time will tell guys but regardless i wont buy a phone without a KB. at this point im so satisfied with my epic i can see myself rockin this bad boy for another 3+ years if need be, does what i want, when i want and has one of the best 5-row KB ive ever used. only thing missin on my EE03 is for impaler to make a keyboard fix for these dropped keys lol i miss my speed demon patch, BIG life saver for me. i type as fast if not at times faster on my epic than i do on a regular PC keyboard =P

Lets make sure atrix gets ice cream sandwich we do have the power

http://www.facebook.com/motorola?sk=wall&filter=1 click the link people like it and comment on it.
I have seen first hand proof of this working. I had an evo 3d. Htc decided all futre devices would have locked bootliaders well that made alot of people angry. Someone posted a thread on xda suggesting we let htc know that is not gna fly. So it turnd out thousands of people got on there facebook wall and twitter. Guess what the next day htc released a statement saying that they wanted too keep there coustamers happy and that the bootloader would be unlocked. They were. Id like to be able too have a device and not have too get a new one juzt because moto or htc or sammy wants too put them out constantly get people too buy them and then ditch them and out out another. The atrix is 100 percent capable of runing ics and theres no excuae for it l not too recieve it just because moto wants people too buy new devices every couple months. I know many many people feel the same way well as i said we have the power too change that if people would stop bickering and take it seriously. And also if moto started supporting devices longer not just bug fixes but the new android flavors. Id definately make my next device a moto it would do nothing but benefit them
try and get as many people as you can too do the same. It will make a difference.
I'd wait until ICS is released. As things stand today, Atrix has the latest Android version available.
Yes that is correct how ever the atrix 2 is not a good sign for us. And it is a good idea too voice our oppinion before they stop supporting our phone if we do after really wouldnt have the same effect in my oppinion

They got tons of flak for promising gingerbread for the Motorola Milestone (gsm version of OG Droid) and then saying nevermind. Mind you, this was merely 1 year after the milestone came out as well. Gingerbread for the Atrix was inevitable. Not giving the Atrix gingerbread would be a PR disaster. What people fail to realise about a CM port of ICS to the Atrix is that if Moto decides to EOL the Atrix after only a year with no ICS upgrade, you lose out on updated drivers, kernel, and baseband. Sure we'd have ICS, but it won't run as well as a phone that natively has ICS.

Pretty sure that's what "Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Source Code Available Now!" in the title of the article means
First post for you yay!
Everyone sounds confident that we'll be getting ICS on the Evo. Has there been any confirmation (by the Cyanogen team or otherwise) that this device was going to make the cut? It's getting a bit long in the tooth, phone-wise. I'd love to eek out a few more months of use out of it though. Best phone I've had so far.

Cyanogenmod already said they'd work to develop an ICS build [CM 9] but refused to do so until official source was released, which it has been.
Right, but was the Evo 4G specifically mentioned as being supported? CM9 might not (probably won't) be available on all devices that CM7 supports.
It probably won't be supported on something like the Hero or older legacy devices which barely made the cut for CM7. I have a good feeling that the EVO will still get ICS because it hasn't had the life bled out of it yet like the G1 or other highly supported phones.
ive been waiting for this since honeycomb i am so excited and evo should make the cut its not to old of a device probably wont be an official release but still it works

Time to troll HTC again?

http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/1...ist-which-phones-will-get-ice-cream-sandwich/
So where's ICS for the Shift, HTC?
We might as well start getting on them now since they held out forever on the kernel source. The shift is so under rated still.
I don't really see us "officially" getting ICS. Like Sparksco said, the Shift is severely underappreciated.
I do know we have a couple devs working on it though...
I think its a very possible we will see one because
At first I would have said no way we would get it when HTC released Sense 3.0 which only supported Dual-Core devices. That would make you think any later version after 3.0 would also be a definite no and we will never see ICS (officially for the shift) and we know HTC will have to update Sense UI to a later version for ICS
But then again now HTC released Sense 3.5 on devices which is optimized to run on Single Core phones so now if they do update Sense it leaves room to think maybe their next iteration of sense will be compatible with lower end phones to (don't take that to context to much the shift IS very powerful)
We might also see an update like the EVO got when it recieved gingerbread. It got the firmware upgrade to gingerbread but HTC still kept it at 1.0
So their is always the possibility it could be our turn for that.
and now with the Handset alliance thing which HTC is apart of I believe, part of the ruling is you have to support a device for 18 months with latest updates as long as hardware allows.
If anything we know we will be waiting longer than most devices out there anyway if we do end up getting it. The phone is underappreciated a lot, just like the article says (to be honest I was suprised they even mentioned it)
But yea its basically time to start bugging HTC as much as we possibly can for some kind of update. I know I will start

Official response from HTC USA on Facebook:
Hey guys. If you haven't seen our latest note on ICS, you can catch it here. http://on.fb.me/vSPMMr We will be announcing more phones later so just because it hasn't been announced yet doesn't mean that it won't be in the future.
Trolling HTC is utterly useless. They're not in charge of whether or not we get an official ICS update. If you must troll someone, troll Sprint. To that end, it's really not worth it IMO. Trolling for the kernel source was warranted, because GPL requires them to release it. They're not required to release ICS and honestly, I doubt they will when they could spend that time and money on more popular phones. I love my little shifty but am not in denial of it's popularity. Who really cares if we get an official update? Most of us would end up running a custom version of it anyway and at this rate, we'll see CM9 or other AOSP builds before long. Hell, toast already says he's got a source build running great, it's only a matter of time. Why pull your hair out waiting for an official update?

Useless? We got GB kernel source code fairly quickly once we started trolling them. It is important we get an official update from HTC more than you know.
GB source code was always coming, we were quite literally entitled to it (GPL). This is not the case with an ICS update. I know that getting an official update helps immensely, but we're certainly not gonna get one by trolling HTC. It's Sprint's decision.

It's not just sprints choice. It's a partnership between sprint and htc. We just need to express that we do want a official update to htc because htc will listen to us, and might come up with something with sprint. Sprint will not listen to us about a official update because all the do is tell htc which phones are more popular and which ones they think should get the updates first, and then htc goes on it's happy way to make a update. Meanwhile they throw in some of sprints apps (big deal). Htc does most of the work. They do all the kernels, and most of the rom development.
