So i was debating on getting the HTC EVO 3D because of the new sprint nexus S ...and i ran into this
“I think the Nexus has been the thing we use to set the bar,” Rubin said. “There will always be new ones coming out for the market,” he continued.
So, when?
“The cycles are holidays and the summer time,” he noted indicating that they’d be making an announcement at some point. Considering that we’re already creeping up on the summer, maybe Rubin meant that the new Nexus S 4G for Sprint was the summer device. That leaves the holiday device…
So what will it be? A Nexus running Ice Cream Sandwich (the next version of Android that will unify the tablet Honeycomb OS with Android phones)? Perhaps. Rubin would only commit to the new OS launching “towards the end of the year”.
So what do ya'll think?
That's one announcement I'm really hoping comes out of this. Who knows how soon, if at all (but one might assume as much), it'd come to Sprint. I hope the Nexus S coming to Sprint is a sign of things to come in the future. Hopefully a not too distant future.

Hopefully the next version is GSM&CDMA so that sprint gets it right away.

This is my first Motorola phone and I actually hopped to ATT for the Atrix and so far, I really dont have anything bad to say.
Now that my intro is done... anyone have any insight when MOTO/ATT will push Gingerbread to the Atrix?
I'm hoping summer... what does everyone else think?
edit: when I poll for winter, its winter at the end of this year, not right now....
So far we're speculating for fall...
Hopefully with the attention that MOTO has with the Atrix and the Xoom, maybe they'll hire some extra engineers to push something by summer...
look at Milestone, they still on 2.1.
so I guess we won't get 2.3 until 2012
I really hope they upgrade directly to Ice Cream in winter, skipping Gingerbread. Ah well, hope springs eternal, as they say...
Crap in one hand and wait on gingerbread in the other, see which one gets full first.
It is bs the phone should not have been released without gingerbread.
They are already developing ginger bread. Look in dev forum. Someone had a dev dump if ginger bread at some point

gingerbread is pointless.
ice cream is what we need. I rather have them skip gingerbread and work straight onto ice cream.

Actually Motorola are known to update their flagship phones. The milestone never for updated because it was not one. The Droid x was released with 2.1, updates to 2.2 and will be getting 2.3 soon.

Since the Atrix is a flagship dual-core, I think we'lll see it sooner rather than later. Especially since we have a Gingerbread dump in the dev forum already... that's some nice signs for a spring/summer update.
Its really interesting seeing the wide range of dates when people think we'll get it.
I would really like to see the update soon, but it doesn't look likely. It is more likely I will end up with the Galaxy S2 / iphone 5 or some new HTC phone before we see an update.
Is it even in their roadmap?
Last year, when they released the Evo, official news of Froyo was released shortly after.
But, I haven't heard anything official about Ginger Bread?
Maybe they are too busy working on the Evo 2 and maybe they are saving those for the Evo 2 so that we all can upgrade?
Speaking of Evo 2, it's March already and still no news leaks about an Evo 2?
I doubt it...I usually see htc phones get one big update and that's it. They want you to buy the the next latest and greatest htc phone when it comes out.
We are gtting the evo tab, evo 3d and nexus s 4g.
The EVO 2 was just something started by the community... who knows if it will ever actually happen.
About GB, I don't think anyone has received an update to it besides Devs phones. Some phones are gonna have it on launch...
If the EVO does get it, I kinda feel like it will be later.

True! If the "Evo 2" gets GB + Sense 2.1, it should be even easier for XDA devs to port and have Wimax working.
Would like to see if anyone has a good working port for ics

As soon as someone has a working port of ICS, I'd imagine it would be the busiest thread in the development sub-forum. So keep an eye out there.

Settle down. Source code isn't even out yet. And that will probably be November 17 at the earliest since that is the release date of the European Galaxy Nexus. Traditionally, code had been released a couple weeks after a nexus phone. Expect early December.

Of how much I want to see ICS on my beloved G2.. it seems the only way we'll see ICS on the G2 is through the great devs working on a port, because unfortunately according to PC World HERE HTC has the list of phones that will be getting ICS starting next year, and the G2 is no where in the line-up on getting it.
Oh well.. I was thinking about upgrading my phone to a Galaxy Nexus (32gb version).

Why would you care if HTC is going to build 4.0 for your phone? HTC builds **SUCK**. They are polluted with a whole bunch of garbage the *looks* like AOSP, but actually is NOT. The HTC VISION is hacked more thoroughly than any other android phone available. It will NOT be a big deal to build a proper AOSP for it.
Just wait for cm 9 and its variants. The nightlies even now are getting closer to ics.
I love a new release as much as the next guy, but I kinda wish the buzz was over. I can't stop trying to give my phone an ice cream feel. And it probably only does a couple things dif. than gingerbread.

I find it funny that many news sites either don't mention it, or repeating it wrong.
HTC was speaking of a first wave.
There is a second wave of phones that will get ICS.
Second wave of phones are not announced until now.
Incredible S, Desire S, Desire HD and Desire Z have very good chances to be on this second list.
Can somebody explain why ICS is so much better than what I have right now? Just wondering?....
Gpu acceleration is the main reason I want it...

Courtesy of HTC Facebook page we already know which htc devices will get Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update. Now the company put them together in a list on official HTC Blog. It looks like the HTC EVO Shift 4G did not make the cut for the "official" update .
DROID Incredible 2 by HTC
HTC Amaze 4G
HTC Desire S
HTC Desire HD
HTC EVO 3D
HTC EVO Design 4G
HTC Incredible S
HTC Sensation
HTC Sensation XL
HTC Sensation 4G
HTC Sensation XE
HTC Raider
HTC Rezound
HTC Rhyme
HTC Thunderbolt
HTC Vivid
Currently Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Update rolling out to German HTC Sensation XE and basic HTC Sensation, the update will be more widely available in the next few weeks. The update for the HTC Sensation 4G and HTC Sensation XL will follow, but there is no estimated time of arrival.

Oh yea, and the shift will run it like a beast too. Knowing how smooth Sense 3.5 was..and since "sense" 4.0 (look a homophone lol) is even lighter, it'll be hella fast.

When the EVO 3D/EVO Design get their sense 3.6 ICS upgrades it will help to get WiMax on the Shift ports also. (Sense 3.6/4.0 alike)
I seriously doubt we will ever see a Sense 3.5 WiMax capable ROM. I mean it really wasn't going to happen until sprint got a Sense 3.5 WiMax Phone, and now any new phone Sprint will get that "might" get WiMax will be Sense 4.0 developers will abandon 3.5 (for good reason)
Sprint probably won't release any new WiMax phones anyway, unless their LTE plan COMPLETELY goes to ****.

i was reading something yesterday about sprint getting the galaxy nexus next month and the htc one in june and the phones are supposed to have the ability to transition from 3g to 4g like they do with 2g/3g now and have the lte radios in em for when the lte goes live. see what happens though. I knew the shift wouldnt make the cut for the official ICS though so thats not a shocker.
Yeah I think we all saw this coming, but we were just hoping anyway.

It’s always a pleasure to be the bearer of good news, especially when it comes to sharing with people what we know about an impending arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich on their Android devices. But before we do, we just want to make sure you know that this hasn’t been fully confirmed yet by Verizon. With that in mind, owners of Motorola Droid RAZR may want to mark down June 12 on their calendar, as that’s the date that Verizon apparently will roll out the ICS update for the two Droids.
According to internal sources quoted by CNET, the OTA update to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich for both Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx will be pushed out on June 12. While there were plans to bring it out earlier, there was an issue with the server that was supposed to deliver the update — hopefully that’s been dealt with now.
The June 12 date certainly still falls in line with what Motorola has written on its website, where the ICS upgrade roll out for Droid RAZR and RAZR Maxx is expected to start in Q2 2012. In this case, the end of the second quarter more like. As always, we’ll let you know once we have more details. Feel free to share with our readers if you have some information or heard otherwise about the ICS update for the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR Maxx.
let's wish motorola atrix 4g will get it in early july

My money is on late Q3 for Atrix. Likely September I think.

What's up with all these threads on ICS for non-Atrix phones?
Motorola said Q2 for the Droid RAZR. Q2 is almost at an end. If that's any indication of future performance, ICS for the Atrix may not come until closer to Q4.
Maybe this is great new for us. That update might have something usefull for our devs. Of course, not drivers, but maybe our very first Blur ICS Rom. plus Webtop 3.0 (Tablet ICS). Idk, maybe im too positive Lol.
I wouldn't be surprised if Motorola decides to push it back in late Q4.

I wouldn't be surprised if at&t blocks it all together to try to get people to buy there already ics enabled phones. Or if they dont have a selection to block it so people will hold out for the next newest thing they'll get.
I'm hoping we'll see the soak test at the end of July and OTA by August just like last year's Gingerbread update.

I still think late Q3/early Q4. IMO the carriers will be more to blame getting their bloat on there. Then again all it really takes is one carrier worldwide, and CM9 will truly be in full effect.
I could care less about stock anyway. Once CM pulls out what it needs, I'll be wiping my phone for some CM9 goodness...

The European Atrix is not very likely going to get ICS - back in February they first marked it as coming in Q3 and then set it back to Evaluation & Planning.
So I wouldn´t be suprised if they cancel the Update for North America. See, the Atrix is 1.5 years old and although it still can be regarded as "High End", there are other, newer phones from Motorola in the pipeline. Call me glass-half-empty, I´m just realistic. Motorola, like any other company, has to make profit and shelling out money for an update for an outdated device (yes, it can be considered as such since there is already an Atrix 2) is just a service.
I still hope to see my Atrix rocking fully functional ICS, but I wouldn´t be suprised if it never happened.
Just my 2 cents

I hear what your saying, but I think the update is more of a public relations move. Our phone was only 8 months old when ics came out. There was lots of negative feedback towards moto for the response time about ics. If they dropped support on a flagship phone they would lose customers indefinitely.

This makes little sense.
If a customer sees that their device is "old" compared to others, and realizes that the issue is lack of support from Moto, the response will be to buy another brand of phone.
On the scale of things, it is not a big effort for Moto to release for other devices based on the same platform. I would imagine the true engineering effort is almost nothing, and the bottleneck is just getting it thorugh QA.
I would be very surprised to not see an AtrixG4 released in August.

I love my Atrix, and don't see any other device, for now, to replace to. However, I really doubt if I will buy another Moto device, with the only excepsion of a Moto-made Nexus. Moto's policy of locking the bootloaders, along with a very questionable updating history probably burned Moto's future for me, which is quite a shame since I really love their building quality and simple-and-non-cloned designs.
