Fingers, yes fingers.
You know what I mean, we all have them and I am sure most if not all of you, (going out on a limb here) would agree they can come in really handy quiet often.
It just so happens most of us also have touch screen tabs, which these finger things work particularly well with, wow its almost as if these devices were made for fingers!
The thing is I, like many other iconians I am sure, like to keep our tabs looking smart.
Unfortunately this is where the problem starts...
It seems this combination, of wanting to keep our devices nice and using the afore mentioned fingers (no matter how recently washed), does not seem to be a good mix, (marks all over the nice screen)!
I have a very nice case/stand/keyboard but the iconia looks so good outside a case, and the thumbs tablet keyboard is great so I don't want to lock it up in a case.
Does anyone have any other type of cure for this, as I find that not using these finger thingies, leads to a very dull tab, albeit a very clean and pretty one.
Cheers...

Check out the Skinomi screen protector: www.skinomi.com
You can find them on amazon. Finger prints are almost non existant now that I have put one on my tablet. Also, I barely notice it is there!
Hmmm...
Thanks for your very prompt reply, but, not to sound ungrateful, I have a real dislike of screen protectors

Very good, thing is LOL I like my fingers just the way they are also.
I can see this is going to be a bit of a problem, not that I want to be awkward or anything, but in this day and age where we can fake men landing on the moon, and have non-stick frying pans that do stick, and all these lovely tablets.
Who ever or what ever company gets this finger thing sorted will be set for life.
What a great selling point for any new tab...

The only other real alternative is to continuously wash your hands while using the screen. The marks on the screen aren't a fault of the screen, it's your hands. The natural oils excreted by your skin are the marks that show up on the screen. They show up on everything you touch, from your keyboard to your friends. Some people have it worse than others.
Washing your hands temporarily removes the build-up of oil from your fingers, but it doesn't take long for it to come back. The more of a Matte finish the screen is, the less apparent it will be, but people like shiny screens.
I find it easier to carry a cloth to wipe the screen down after I'm done using the device, than to wash my hands every 5 minutes. My Zagg screen protector also seems to keep the marks to a minimum since it adds a very slight matte to the screen.

I hope you are not insinuating I touch my friends
Yeah this is what I too do at the moment, use a cloth, not touch my friends
And I have to say that at least the Iconia is very easy clean compared to other devices I have. I believe it has some sort of chemical on the screen to help with this very issue and it does make cleaning better.
Although I have to say the first company that fixes this I will sell everything I own, (nothing unless anyone would like purchase a nice second hand shirt I am currently wearing) and buy shares in it.

I do, but all my friends are computers.
Treat the Glass
I've read that a glass treatment like Rain Ex or similar will all but make finger prints disappear. I have not tried it yet but will soon. I had to remove my ZAGG anti-glare screen protector because it just killed the screen quality too much.
I'm actually using a stylus for that exact reason. I think it was marketed toward the Ipad, but it works great on any touchscreen device (I'm actually using it on my dang phone now also). ;-)
The end of it "feels" like a finger. LOL

That could be interesting 'feels like a finger' you say, hmm...
Do you think maybe we could engineer it that maybe it would be part of our hand?
Two benefits there, we would never forget it, you would always know where it is and we would have six fingers!
That's three I know, but whos counting, probably on there 5 fingered hand.
An extra finger would always be useful (thinking about piano players here )
Ok still not the solution but I have also tried styluses and did not work, which is yours and were did you get it?
Hmm... Are we counting thumbs here or what?

The one I'm using is a "Targus" Stylus for iPad. I picked it up at Best Buy last weekend.

Unfortunately a very tragic event occurred last night. I downloaded Baseball Superstars 2011. I love this game. I had the 2010 on my ipod touch but it didn't work well on the 101. 2011 version was a different story. Everything was running great. However, it's a game where you have to constantly press one area of the screen to hit the ball.
Well, after a few minutes of playing I pressed the area to hit the ball and CRACK, the screen just cracked. I couldn't believe it. I have played so many hours of this game on the ipod touch. I was very sad. Not because of the device being broken but because of the effort I put in to get it running smoothly and setup the way I wanted.
I have a friend who runs the store I bought it from. I will be returning it for a refund because I read others ending up with their screens broken and I find this ridiculous. I didn't drop it or anything. Broken because of pressing is stupid for a touchscreen device. I have always liked Archos devices and now that they had a device I really wanted I bought it. It is a great device but this is just unacceptable.
2 options now:
Wait for Motorola XOOM
Buy a nice android phone and wait for Ipad 2 (easy on the comments please)
I should say that as a community this one is great. If it wasn't for the firmware update and gapps I would have returned my device a long time ago. I think the people who dedicate themselves to development rock.
You do realize the Archos have a capacitive touch screen? That means you shouldn't be pressing on the screen, just touch it.
Secondly, I've pressed pretty hard, and I don't get how one can press through the screen. It has also survived me dropping the device. @[email protected]
Shame that you have to leave, but I hope you'll be happier with your next device.
I've just gotten the time and card to set mine with the oc-ed custom kernel and 16GB microsd card... and I'm pretty happy with it.

I agree. You would have to really rail on that screen to crack it and there is no need since its capacitive. I'm thinking the adrenaline of the game got the best of you.
I've dropped my 101 on the cold hard floor of a coffee shop and all I got was a little scratch in the corner...
I definitely didn't rail on it but at the same time I did PRESS (multiple times) and not touch. It's just the nature of that game as well as placement of the control. Since it broke I pressed down on the screen a little around all sides and I have noticed that the screen is better supported with things behind it on the left side than on the right. Maybe I have extra muscle in my right thumb, who knows but I can say for sure it wasn't the kind of press that would crack my phone, ipod touch, or just about any other device. Looks like I will be exchanging the Archos. Friend says he can't do the return just change it. That' when I have to decide whether to build this thing again or ebay it.
If you stay with the Archos, get an Invisible shield from Zagg. That will distribute some impact. I have clobbered the screen on my DroidX with the shield and it has held up.
I have one coming for my Archos.
I am posing this question here but if I don't get enough response I will create a separate thread.
Looks like the Xoom will be around the $1000 price range. This isn't confirmed but seems likely. That's well outside my budget. So my question is:
Archos 101 or Viewsonic G tablet? (Yes I know this is the Archos forum but I just need opinions from people if they could do it all over again)

I know it's not a choice you listed but as an Archos 101 owner that later purchased a Nook Color... I have to say look into the Nook Color.
The build quality is much better, and I really like the form factor. The 512 mb of ram is great also. It has been receiving more love than my Archos since I got it.
Just a comment on the state of things in my household concerning Android tablet usage . . . .
I have my Archos 101 and a Zenithink ZT-180 with it's single-touch resistive screen. While the Zenithink is a cheap generic Android tablet, it's quite sturdy, including the screen. That's why my grandson plays on the Zenithink and my wife and granddaughter get to use the Archos. My grandson is an enthusiastic kid who takes his gaming seriously. He's gone through two styluses - one broke and one lost in the couch (the couch ate it). I'm not sure the Archos could take his level of enthusiasm.
Bye.

Its the nature of adrenaline... if a 125 pound mom can lift a car off her child with it, surely you can get excited enough playing an intense game to press harder than you realize.
Regarding the Nook comment. The Nook is solid as heck, but I tried it before I got the 101 and I had a lot of quirky issues with it (read my post in another thread about how I don't tolerate "issues" to any great extent). I loaded ADW.Launcher on it and made it the default, but often it would "switch back" to Nook's UI. You don't have nearly the settings or control. The WiFi seemed horrible and even loading 3rd party browsers like Dolphin and Opera seemed to give a very poor web surfing experience to me. I also tried a Viewsonic. I don't think it was the G tablet, but it was a Tegra 2 device they sell at Sears for $299 and I returned it in 2 days. The lag was HORRIBLE on the thing and the screen seemed very unresponsive. Apps constantly crashed. It was just horrible. Now, perhaps a custom ROM could clear that up, but wow...very unimpressed with the Viewsonic.
So, based on my experience with these devices, I think the 101 is the best I've had and I'm very happy with it. But...I also get you are a bit skittish after losing a screen. Perhaps it was a defect in the screen itself, like a micro-fracture that, with the right pressure, cracked...kind like when a rock chip in your car windshield is there one day and then you wake up the next day and there is a crack across the entire window. Who knows...
I had the Archos 101 and was very happy with it until my micro sd card shot out of the tablet. The Archos was always a little though on the sd card so I think it was just a defective one. Huge demand for them ... I think Archos was cranking them out really quick. I was definitely happy with it. I RMA'd it through NewEgg and they refunded instead of replace. No big deal since I got a viewsonic g Tablet instead. I will let you know which of the two I like better. Plus the g Tablet got an update that is suppose to help with a lot of the responsiveness.
You must have been pressing your screen quite hard to break it!
I bought the Acer Iconia yesterday morning, and I was really not very pleased with it. The weight is a big issue for me, but the biggest problem I had was the screen. It was responsive enough and fairly bright, but the color reproduction and black levels are awful... After spending several hours messing with it, I decided to take it back today and pick up a transformer.
However, this forum has to be the biggest wet blanket in the world. I now have no idea what I want to do. Yes the screen quality of Iconia is bad, and it does experience the SoD like every other Honeycomb tab, but the list of issues that are mounting here are pretty considerable. The IPS display, and the supportive dev community had me pumped and ready to go, but now I'm thinking that it might be a sideways move. Dead pixels, black stripes on the screen, SoD, creaking bezel, reboots, lock ups... Jeez...
I guess the Thrive is the next on the list, but damn... That thing is the size of a standard hardback novel. And it's expensive to boot.

I think the newer batch (serial number B60xxxx) has a better build ... SoD and slightly creaking bezel (it may be ignorable when you put it in a case) may still be there, but the other issues should be pretty much gone. Except if you got a lemon ...
Hmmm... I wonder if Best Buy will let me thumb through their stock to look for a B60??? They also don't sell a case, so I have to go out looking for one... Ugh...
Okay, you guys must have the worst luck in the world. My Transformer doesn't have any of these issues and I have a B50. Does it have problems right away or is mine going to develop these issues over time?

Same. I have a B50 and my first one was completely fine.
And I don't think the issues are going to build over time.
Actually, it looks like the Thrive is having some pretty well-documented SOD issues itself. I've had decent luck with my TF. Minimal light bleed, and a slight looseness to the bezel on the right (right above SD card). Imperfections aside, I love it. I'll definitely hold me until Android tablets round 2 (ICS).
Well, the dude at Best Buy did actually let me thumb through the stock. I got one of the 3 B60 revisions that they had. I also picked up the stand/sleeve from Toys R Us on the way home. Here's to hoping this isn't a lemon.
I love the screen so much more than the Iconia... I played with the display model (also B60) while I was waiting on "customer service". Colors look sooooo much better.
I got a B6 at best buy they had them in the display locked up and i told him i needed one with a B6 serial number he got me one. the only thing i see wrong with this hardware wise. light bleed. im a happy camper. but i did buy the extended warranty.

Welcome back.
Well, I got her home, charged, rooted, and running on Revolver 0.2.1. OC'd to 1.2Ghz.The tablet is everything that I wanted, so far. I am still pretty excited to see where the dev community goes. I really hope to see some new kernels and creative roms show their faces. I'd also like to see Virtuous's Galaxy/Xoom/Thrive roms on our little tab.
As far as issues. I have 3 places on the screen with minor spotlighting, but to be quite honest, I have worse on my iPad 1.
The battery life is stellar so far. Much better than I had with the Iconia. To top that off, the case Asus offers is EXACTLY what I was wanting. It's almost identical to the Apple iPad stand case.
The strangest thing I've noticed between the two tabs is the flash performance. The Transformer just blows the Iconia out of the water. Justin.TV is a completely pleasant experience all the up to the 720p+ mark and beyond. The Iconia had noticeable lag when playing anything on the channel.
The Iconia's speakers were definitely of a higher quality, but after correcting the speaker balance issue, and using Supercurio's mod, the sound is every bit as good, if not better than my iPad 1.
In the end, I'm pretty damn happy with it. My wife is a complete Apple fan, and she walked by while I was working on the Transformer, and she stopped and said "What is that?!?" I told her it was Android Honeycomb, and she snatched it out of my hands. That's fine... She can play, but in the end, she's getting the iPad...
I dropped my tablet yesterday while it was inside a laptop slipcase onto concrete. Luckily, I got away with a small chip in the corner instead of full on case warping like I've been hearing. Anyway, I figure it's about time I look into a nice case with stand support. What do you guys recommend?

Don't buy the official Acer folio. I did, even after reading the crappy reviews (didn't want to wait for something else), and regret it. Crappy quality, the fit loosens so the tab tends to slide out, it covers the microphone, etc.

try this one (got it from Amazon)
rooCASE Slim-Fit (Black) Folio Case Cover with Multi Adjustable Viewing Angles for Acer Iconia Tab A500 10.1-Inch Android Tablet Wi-Fi $26.98
Just got my tpdgear leather case in today. Its great so far. All the ports are easy to access. There is no hinderance. Speakers are tucked away until you prop up the unit. When its closed, it feels like a hefty notepad. The flap is secured with an elastic bad. It feels like an executive notepad when closed tbh. In landscape mode, it has three angles. Good for typing and viewing videos. My only grip is that it extra bulk when in portrait but it can't be help with all these folio style cases.
I've uses the hard plastic version on my friend"s xoom and I like tdpgears much more. Feels better, softer and not eggshell like. I assume its better if ever dropped because its softer. Got it for 30 on eBay.

Just unboxed my rooCASE/blueREX slim.
To anyone considering the Acer case, GET THIS INSTEAD.
Looks nicer, feels nicer, and the cover actually stays closed. And cheaper.
Due to the original Acer case having a more wrap around fit (rooCASE is sort of a clip-on. See pics and you will understand), I think it might give better edge protection against drops, but if you are worried about that, get the non-slim version.
I downloaded the SketchBook Express app from Autodesk. It's a great app for sketching and drawing, highly recommend. I wanted the ability to get more precise so I picked up a stylus from BB for way too much. while I was there I also took a look at the stylus for the Flyer. JEALOUS! That is a slick stylus and you can get such a very fine point that I do not believe is attainable with the Galaxy 10.1. It would be great if we could someday though. Anyone else play around with a stylus? Aside from the drawing aspect, it's a great way to keep finger grease from smearing all over your tab.
I would love a stylus like the flyer has, but those have digitizers in them or something so there's almost no delay
If you can wait a few weeks for the slow shipping, Deal Extreme has several to choose from. The one I got was comparable to a $12 Targus model.
It's not really possible to use a stylus like the one included with the HTC Flyer since the Flyer's screen also has a built-in digitizer.
Can you even draw without an insane amount of lag on the tab? The tab seems too sluggish to draw on, as you have to put your finger on the touchscreen, and drag it about 1 cm until the input is registered.
Comparing the Galaxy Tab with Asus Transformer (with Sketchbook Pro on both), the Galaxy Tab seems almost unusable for this. Perhaps the Touchwiz UX is the culprit?
I picked up a stylus by the the BB house brand, Rocketfish, for an inexpensive stylus for a trip...hoping to take notes with it. Talk about a disappointment. it's okay in place of a finger for navigation around the UI or even for use with Swype, but absolutely worthless for my intended purpose...very slow and inaccurate. I'm not sure how much is the stylus's fault vs the Galaxy Tab, but i'm returning it. Samsung's website has the official one for $20 and if you look around online, you can get a promo code for 15% off...but I don't know if that would be any better.

A good quality stylus helps, but won't give you smooth note-taking. I have tried a couple and definitely a cheap one (like rocketfish) gives you significantly worse results than a higher end one (like boxwave).

That's good to know. Part of the issue, I think, is the extraordinarily wide tip if this stylus. I feel like I can't see exactly where on the screen it's making contact. I'll check out the boxwave one...any thoughts on the official Samsung stylus?

As u guys know capacitive stylus have a very wide point so that it can be recognized by the device, therefore affecting precision. Thankfully some people already came up with a solution. U have to options.
1) DIY fine ponit stylus with materials u can find in ur house... for FREE:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHhB2BF5yQM
I found a blog where someone made a more precise intructions .... but I don't

2) Someone took the idea to kickstarter and know they are commercializing there

As u guys know capacitive stylus have a very wide point so that it can be recognized by the device, therefore affecting precision. Thankfully some people already came up with a solution. U have to options.

They're still not the same as the digitizer/pen set-up on the likes of the HTC Flyer or the Galaxy Note, both the items you linked to still have a pad of sorts on the end.
They both seem very similar to the oStylus, just dressed up to look a bit more like they have a fine point.
I have a few different stylii, and I mainly use them to keep the fingerprints and smudges off the screen.
For anything more than basic taps and swipes, though, they're pretty useless.
I had pick up one of the Rockfish styluses too. Not what I had hope but about what I expected. Better to be disappointed for $9 than $20+.
I ordered a Jot over the weekend. It will probably be a couple a weeks before it arrives but I will post a review if and when it does.

It's funny you mentioned Jot--I just found this stylus this morning and ordered the Jot Pro. Hopefully it's a fast 4 weeks!

Bought of these at BB also for $8. Didn't expect much, but I do agree that it's horrible for memo/note taking. Great for surfing the web and other task though.
While I'm growing used to the e.stylo, I'm still wishing for something with a fine point. Ordered a Jot Pro; hopefully it's all that and more.

Just wanted to toss my 2 cents in. I just got my Jot a few days ago. Works great. The biggest issue I have with drawing now is the lag between drawing a stroke and having it show up on the screen.
Any tips for fixing this issue?
Just got my Jot Pro. I should have thought this through...I have a Zagg Invisible Shield on my tablet. Anyone who's used one before knows that it has it's own stickiness characteristic. I should have considered it before ordering the stylus. It just doesn't work well at all. The screen has far too much grip with the protector on it. Now i'm faced with 1) returning the stylus (sad face because it works awesome on other devices), 2) removing my Invisible Shield and forfeiting the $30 it costs, or 3) or just hold into the stylus and deal with the problem later.
Like I said though, the Jot Pro does work really well on other devices without the Zagg screen protector. I was very presently surprised when trying it on a Nexus S. The accuracy is fantastic!

Perhaps the Touchwiz UX is the culprit?

was the transformer on 3.2? Just wondering because I saw a video of a person using the stylus on the old Galaxy tab (running gingerbread) and it writes smooth as butter. Just curious
i have the jot pro and the tab is still hopeless at handwriting due to lag. I don't mind if my writing looksawful but there are big gaps in letters where it can't keep up. Frustrating as I have heard and read this doesn't happen on transformer/ipad.

I tried my Jot Pro on a friend's Galaxy Tab last night and can confirm this. Glad I didn't rip my Invisible Shield off. I wonder what causing it...

Yes, it was 3.2. However, having flashed BroodComb, used Titanium Backup to freeze all unnecessary bloatware and applied the V6 supercharger seems to have reduced the lag considerably -- it could be better though. (I don't know why you would compare Gingerbread with Honeycomb though?)
I have tried the touchscreen booster app as well, but it does nothing (or at least, I've noticed no difference).
I'm currently on my second 10.1. My first one I got when they were first released in the US and I hated Touchwiz and felt that I just wasn't ready for an Android Tablet.
Then I realized prices had came down slightly since the last time around and I purchased a 16GB WiFi Metallic Gray.
I had already owned a Gumdrop case for my previous 10.1 and that tab came with 32GB and a white backing.
Now onto why I love the 10.1 these days.
Yes Tegra 2 and Honeycomb are not up to snuff but I have found, thanks to this awesome community that our 10.1's can run darn snappy without the need for ICS.
True I can't wait for the official CM9/4.0/ICS release but until then I will still retain a smile.
I started with rooting the 10.1 with CWM 4.0.0.4. From there I installed various ROM's until I finally got to Galasky Task 10. It's a great ROM for 3.2 although if you want to stay on 3.1 feel free to try out Task's and Phantom's In Paris V5.
Shortly after that I decided I needed another case. I'm hard on equipment, don't ask why, but I just am. Otterbox quality IMO has went downhill as of late but they're the best in the market for the biggest/baddest/toughest cases around. But with our beloved 10.1's, we are S.O.L. (Bad move by Otterbox in my honest opinion). Enter Gumdrop. These guys make rugged cases that in my opinion rank right up there with Otterbox.
I picked up the military edition (which comes in foliage green) while they were having a sale (all cases were roughly $25) a couple weeks ago. I don't really see any difference in the military version vs. the black/black case I had on my previous tab, so unless you want green, don't pay the extra price.
So now my durability and screen were protected. Gumdrop cases come with membrane screen protectors built into their cases.
So I'm running GTask 10, decked in Gumdrop goodness and thinking it can't get any better than this for the time being. That's when I decide to flash b00sted's ICS blue theme. Wow okay, this will definitely tide me over til ICS.
But time went on, and I was still experiencing a little lag rotating through the screens and other little gestures that would case slight lag. Then I remembered I had GoLauncher and ADW Launcher EX. So I tried them both.
ADW Launcher works much better on my tab and now I can honestly say 100% I have no lag what so ever. But one thing that had bugged me and I had never noticed on my previous Gumdrop/10.1. The screen sensitivity was not near what it used to be due to the membrane screen protector.
So I searched for answers. Finally I found Mr. Vitalij's TouchScreenTune in the market. This was the icing on the cake. I got all my screen sensitivity back and then some.
My tab is now flawless for me and I couldn't be happier. Sure I've tried the ICS's kang's but they're way too alpha for me right now to run as a daily driver. But honestly my tab feels ICS quick now.
Just thought I'd share for anyone that is on the fence about a 10.1 SGT or wanting to try a few things to get rid of that last and final bit of lag.
