I have a driod 1 and I just rooted it and I'm using it for xbox live with wireless tether and when I test the connection on the xbox it says I need to change my NAT can anyone give me suggestions on what to do?
Usually on routers you need to open the ports on the router by going into its IP however I'm not sure if you can do that on WiFi tethering....
Ill just tell you now don't bother. all you are going to get is lag and slow downloads. And that's if Verizon doesn't catch you for the insane amounts of data its going to use. Not to hate.

i do this all the time with mt4g. You'll always have a strict nat type there is nothing you can do about that. You should be able to still play games and download updates and such with that strict nat type. the only negative on it is matchmaking will take alot longer sometimes.

True. The Android OS does not have the applications or services required to serve as a uPNP gateway, or to open and forward ports correctly. Given you could integrate such things into the phone and potentially do it manually utilizing command line, ADB, and iptables. but that is allot more work then its really worth.

So the apps NESoid & SNESoid are now version 2.0 which provides a feature called Net Play, which is described as "* Net-play through Bluetooth (requires Android 2.x) or Wi-Fi!"
The options in the menu provide this:
Bluetooth (Client)
Bluetooth (Server)
Wi-fi (Client)
Wi-fi (Server)
Now I was hoping to get a sweet multiplayer game of Street Fighter II Turbo going, so I loaded up that ROM, clicked "Menu" >> "Net Play" >> "Wi-fi (Server)" and it is trying to establish a connection, but never does. Do you think this means no one else in the world, at that moment, is trying to play Street Fighter II Turbo?
Would anyone like to experiment with trying to get a connection, or has anyone succeeded yet?
*Edit* After clicking on Wi-fi (Client), it is asking me to enter in an IP address...so I'm thinking one person would host by picking (Server) and then would tell the (Client) their IP address, and when they enter it in, they could play together! Who wants to try??
Not to hijack your thread, but where can I find roms to play with the emulator. I would love to past street fighter with you lol

I'm sorry but I don't think you're question can be answered per XDA rules, but just remember Google is your friend!
This is great to see and I might actually buy SNESoid to take advantage of this (I played through multiple TMNT and Kirby games with a friend that was 500+ miles away at the time via the ZSNES emulator and it was great, just like sitting beside one another).
I think you need to be on the same WiFi or be near another person using bluetooth.

I think I spotted a problem OP. In the screenshot you posted, the IP address listed is an internal IP (meaning that only people on the same LAN network you are on could have the chance to connect to you). I don't know if the devs did this on purpose or not, but a way around this is by going into your wifi router's settings and looking for a "Forward Ports" option.
Then you would input the internal IP of your Android (can be found in Settings/Wifi but is most likely the IP address in the screenshot) and the port it is using for the server. Then all the multiplayer traffic to your public IP should be automatically forwarded to you're Android and you should be able to play against people over the internet. Hope that helps!
Has anybody ever got this to work? I can get the phones to sync fine but with serious slowdown via WIFI and Bluetooth.
Anybody else mess with this?
I have tried it over bluetooth, and an old wireless B router. I was using the HTC Evo, and my wife has the LG Optimus S. In both cases, the game play gets pretty slow. I have tried adjusting frame rates, sounds off, etc. Nothing seems to get it to run full speed.
I emailed the Dev, who is incredibly responsive by the way, and he said that WiFi is better than bluetooth. So, I am trying to get my hands on a wireless N or at least wireless G router. I am going to plug it in, leave it open, and then not have any other traffic going over it, and see if that helps.
To be honest, I don't think it will. The way he has the netplay working is by having the client phone sync to the same state that the server phone is in. Essentially it's like loading a new save state every 10 seconds on the client phone, and the server phone waiting for it to catch up.
My bet is that he will continue to work on improvements. The best way to have it work would be have 2 identical phones, (processors, etc), same rom, same speeds and tweaks, and then try it on a wireless N if the phones are capable, with no other traffic on it, just the 2 phones. If that doesn't get it to run at full speed, then this is a beta feature, and we will have to wait for a better update.
I can say that games like tetris, or DR mario, although they run slow and a little choppy, are still playable, and are pretty fun, but I think something like killer instinct would be too choppy.
So I tried the wireless tethering built into CM 6.1 this week and it's awesome! However, I noticed that my data widget added a 3rd line marked T (the other two are W(ifi) and C(ell)...) it still shows 0bytes next to it though, so obviously it knew that I had activated the tether feature since it added the T line to the data counters, but since it didn't count any of that data in my data usage tracking does that mean I'm okay and AT&T can't see it? I don't want to incur additional charges for tethering. It's cool, but not THAT cool!
No they can't track it.
Cool, thanks.
This Is cool. I been messing around wwith it a lot. I tether wifi to my Xbox via network adapter. I can join live download updates and Facebook. Even voice chat but it wont even try to join a mw2 map. Just loads and loads. Something with Nat u belive but no one here can fix it.

Not really sure why this doesn't work. Are you joining a game or creating a game? I can see it not working if you're creating a game perhaps. By default, you can't even ping the phone's IP address which is a big issue if you're going to host anything (it's totally unreachable).
But, I have actually tethered my PC and played Left 4 Dead 2 without a hitch. All NAT does is route the client's IP to the hosts' IP (to the outside world). You shouldn't have to have the XBOX NAT'ed to join a game at all.. and if you do, well shame on Microsloth...
"If you are using a NAT or firewall, you will need to open (forward) two ports for incoming traffic if you are going to host games. If you are not going to host games, you may or may not need to open these ports, depending on how your NAT works. You will need to consult your NAT documentation for information for how to open (forward) ports."
We cannot forward ports at this time... it may be possible sometime with 3rd party software though. But like I said, you shouldn't have an issue just simply joining a game. Once a connection is established from your end, port forwarding is not an issue. Port forwarding is only for incoming traffic trying to establish a connection (for a server).
Ya I just try to join. Maybe it matters depending on edge or 3g? The reason I thought Nat was because I got message says Nat is not open and may make your experience not as good or what ever.

Is there a way to verify this? 911jason says his widget isn't picking up data usage while tethered, but I just tried both tethering and wifi hot spot and using 3G Watchdog, it most definitely showed usage on both.
It uses your data it just don't show up to at&t as tethered. Just like using it on your phone

Okay, so I tried tethering and wifi hotspot for the first time today, just to check them out. Now when I connect to my computer and turn on USB storage, the drive doesn't show up. Any suggestions on how to fix this?
*EDIT* Restarting my computer did nothing, but restarting my phone seems to have fixed the problem. Weird.

Yea I had the same issue...so i decided i'd try what used to work -- swiftp...but that didn't work either...then i just gave up. Then I was like..well **** I can just use dropbox...so did that for a while then plugged my into my computer to see if it was working again and sure enough it was LOL
I have managed to connect to wifi tether, and the built in hotspot, and with barnacle. I opened the proper ports in barnacle, but always come up with strict NAT settings.
I then used wired and wireless to tether my Ubuntu desktop, and connected the Ethernet to the Xbox. Still strict. I then tried opening the ports with firestarter and now it connects to the network and internet but not Xbox live. Has anyone successfully got NAT open while tethering?

If you are trying to tether with the intent of playing online gaming or streaming Netflix the Bandwidth isn't high enough to support it.
Streaming Netflix works perfectly fine. Full HD playback. The gaming is slightly lagged, but I think opening NAT might help.

Unfortunately, unless you can get t-mobile to forward the ports needed to your phones outside ip from the tower, its not gonna happen. The towers all have a couple of t1's that provide data to your phones. The ports would have to be forwarded on the routers at the towers, and thats just not gonna happen.
Damn, thanks option. My next question would be of this nature:
Why the hell does barnacle have port forwarding options if the networks control that?

Because you can use it to forward ports locally, but you need ports forwarded publically for xbox and such to work.

LOL. Good luck with that. Its not gonna happen. Could pose a major security risk for them potentially. Well, not really witht he ports you need, but they wont see it that way.
They told me that there is no way for them to do it. They said if I buy the tethering plan it should fix that problem. I got the plan, and its still a no go. I then called back and asked another guy that said they can't give me any information about it. He told me the tethering plan is strictly for internet explorer or safari. Douche bags.

Welcome to the world of attempting to do more than what a provider claims they want to sell you. Before home routers were ubiquitous if you called your ISP that your service was down and dared answer "Yes" that you had a router support died right there. It was obviously a user equipment fault and they would investigate no further!
Understand that T-Mo and all comm providers are catering to the lowest common denominator "Joe User" with their service; it's what makes profit. Fringe use cases like yours don't. Case in point, Charter refused to help me at all even when I could prove an outage in their network simply because when asked "What OS are you using" I said "Linux" -- they tried to tell me the internet only functioned on MAC and Windows!
The point of all this is: you may be able to do what you're attempting with some network trickery if you have the time and energy to invest into Googling the knowledge. Just don't expect your provider to help you any, and they're not douches for it .
You shouldn't need any port forwarding at all. Port forwarding is to work through a firewall and your hot spot doesn't have one. You get straight internet access to it. Your game its most likely laggy due to poor latency or poor upload speeds. I've tried playing from xbox live on my hot spot too with about 3 MB down and 512 KB up on HPDA.

So I'm trying to hide some network traffic from my provider Three UK. As my new contract only has 2gb hotspot and I really miss the old unlimited system they had.
Now I'm only trying to tether an android tablet to the phone nothing else, so I'm not sure how they're detecting that it's tethered bandwidth.
Figured I'd try using a VPN to hide the data but now I'm confused. My phone isn't actually sending the hotspot traffic over the VPN.
I tested local traffic and the values show that is going through the VPN, but anything via the hotspot is not. Any idea why? See speed at the top of this bad image, then VPN speed below.

Looking into this further, my tablet get's a seperate IP than my phone, both provided by Three UK.
The vpn might not help much depending on you setup. Usuall there is a packet counter for tethering, among other things. Try providing output from these commands via adb shell or terminal emulator, probably need to be ran as root.
iptables -L -n -x -v
ip route show
ip rule show
Usually iptables rules get reset on a reboot, I usually run iptables -F, which flushes all rules a -Z should reset counters. But starting with the output of those three should help to figure out whats going on exactly.

The major issue being I don't want to root the device that's being the hotspot.
I can tether invisibly via bluetooth and some simple apps but these are far from perfect and cause errors in things such as plex etc.
The wifi hotspot is interesting though. It seems to actually work as a little server, gives out a new connection to the devices not just sharing it's own. To get 2 different external IP addresses, very interesting.

I have never heard of it giving out external IP addresses, maybe its something specific to you carrier. If thats the case why not connect it via bluetooth to a linux pc, make the pc the access point, then you can route and rewrite packets easily.

However, it's mainly while im at work watching TV at lunch on the tablet.

In that case I am pretty sure you will need root. They are probably seeing that you are tethering by either iptables packet counters, creative routing, or user agent strings. If you are tethering another android device for watching media then it is unlikely they are catching you by user agent strings, since both devices should have android user agents. If you are opposed to rooting the device maybe you could buy a cheap one, root it, and swap the sim card into it when you want to tether?

Well bugger, I really don't want to root my Z3 due to all the DRM software on it.
I can tether USB and Bluetooth without being detected, but WiFi hits this snag still sadly. I can USB tether to a laptop then wifi share from there but that's getting a bit long toothed to just tether my tablet.
The Bluetooth tethering works but flash apps and a few others don't really like it, plex etc.
Hello all! New here but not new to forums in general.
Right now I have fully unlimited data with sprint, and use easy tether pro to connect to my windows pc and play games on.
The only problem is that I end up having a strict nat type and cant play games like rainbow 6 siege, but thats not my worries.
I play Cod ww2 on ps4 and only have 20gb of home wifi so whenever i get close to 18 i stop using it for games and switch over to plugging my phone into my Mac laptop and sharing the connection over wifi. It works but gives me Nat type 3 in game. I have tried bridging connections from my pc to my ps4 using an ethernet cable but my ps4 doesn't want to accept the connection even when i type in all the addresses manually.
HERE THE BUT ----- When i enable the factory wifi hotspot on my phone, I get Nat Type 2, which is perfectly fine for me to play CoD with, but i only have 3gb of wifi sharing a month. Is there any way for me to plug my phone into my mac, share its connection over wifi, and get Nat Type 2???
PS. My phone is not rooted nor am i willing to root it unless a professional does it for me, and there are no pro's around here.

Adding Static IP to your account will get you NAT Type 2. It's like $3 extra a month and you can do it on the website. It's what I have with my Nexus 6 / PS4 Pro. 700GB this month so far, 1.02TB last month.

I would assume since the main device would still be operating with a static IP. If you are the account holder just enable it and ur phone will immediately reconnect, if it doesn't work just take it back off. When I first did it the ROM I was on had issues reconnecting so I disabled it 30 min later and they didn't charge me. Even if they do it's less than 2 McDoubles at McDonald's lol, worth testing imo if you need Type 2 NAT badly. Like I said, works for me using the Wifi hotspot on Pure Nexus on my Nexus 6.
