Ready to flash from OTA to Apex 1.4.1...I think? - Droid X General

Was about to try flashing from OTA 2.3.340 to a custom Rom (Apex 1.4.1). I rooted my phone, and installed Koush's bootstrap program for the DroidX. I read somewhere though that I needed to use the Koush's Droid2 version of the bootstrapper if I was planning to flash to a Gingerbread ROM....is that true? I have already made a backup with the Droid X boostrapper and ready to flash unless I need to get the Droid2 boostrapper.
Thank you

Bummer - runs WAY hot on Apex 1.4.1, and is much more glitchy/slow to respond than stock
Trying Liberty 1.5 now...

You will use dxbootstrap to flash the gb rom if coming from froyo... Then once ur on gingerbread ull use d2bootstrap

The word is that the OTA gingerbread update comes out in about a week. I plan on not flashing again until afterwards since there will be so many true gingerbread choices just after it drops. Something to think about

Yep, I tried Apex, Liberty, Rubix, Fission, Gingerale, and a few others and none of them came close to being as responsive as the new OTA that I flashed today. Again, I am greatly impressed by how the stock rom trounces all the rest, despite all the other developers best efforts.
The highest freemem I got on a 3rd party rom was around 200. The last stock rom was 285, and this one is around 235 on average when I am not doing 10 things at once. Also, the Quadrant benchmark is highest on the stock, and I am not even overclocking.
First time I have ever had a phone where the stock releases were the best ROMs. Crazy.

That is...weird. I'm on Liberty GB .6 (and previously on .5), and it's super fast. Every other comment I've heard about them (that I can think of) say the same thing. Maybe try sbf'ing back to .340, and start fresh with GB?

Nah. Already SBF'd during the process of going between the multiple ROMs to ensure I was getting a clean phone and giving each ROM a fair chance (I am a QA engineer, so I never do a dirty install or upgrade when I have the option to go clean 0 I am too OCD for that.)
Also, the Motoblur interface, as it comes from Motorola allows me to be FAR more productive than Sense or any Sense/Blur combination that the other ROMs attempt to emulate. I experienced no performance increase using the Liberty toolbox, or the various Gummyjar enhancements floating around. I think all the comments about ROMs being faster than the stock and mostly psychological/placebo, and not based on empirical data.
To each their own - OTA 596 is the way to go for me.

I have gotten over 3000 in quadrant using the apex 2.0 beta. I doubt the stock can beat that

New "improved" ROM. Anyone try it?

Just saw a tweet from DLife about an improved Froyo 2.2. Anyone try it yet? I'm not sure I want to do a wipe if its not really that much improved.
EDIT: link http://www.droid-life.com/2010/08/02/download-new-android-2-2-droid-incredible-build/
EDIT EDIT: My recommendation is that you don't use this build. It lacks the stock wallpapers except for the red swirl. It lacks the stock ringtones, AND I'm not sure it even has Flash 10.1. Some sites don't seem to work now that I installed it and I'm reinstalling the previous 2.2 leak instead of this one.

Im steering clear from it. I have made a stable ROM based off the first leak, used skyraider2, amd used the leak itself, amd there is nothong wrong with the firsf.

So far I agree.... Not worth wiping out everything I've done with the first leak! Unless someone can convince me otherwise.
I do have one question though.... Shouldn't there be some way to update the first leak with a new version in the future without wiping the phone? They should have mostly all the same base right?

+100. I've worked out all the bugs that affect my daily usage: 3g hotspot working, no 0's on my Gmail, still pulling 1250-1300+ on Quadrant, market/browser work beautifully. I'll need to see some solid improvements/benchmarks to make it "worth" switching.
Though for posterity's sake, for those concerned about wiping, since it's a 2.2 -> 2.2, I would think a proper titanium restore would work without much issue, app-wise.
Opposite
I am the opposite ... I see no reason to apply a beta radio and a beta pre-release (even one from yesterday) at this point, especially if its going to be a pain in the butt due to radio reflash and app reinstall. Would just as soon wait in hopes that unrEVOked can root the real OTA. Would MUCH rather go thru the pain and effort (and danger) using VZW's release.
Have you gotten Ti backup to work with 2.2? I had issues. It worked to restore my apps from 2.1, but since switching to 2.2 I could do a backup. I remember there being some issue but not what it was. I haven't tried again since.
As for the upgrade, I'm only using the stock Froyo rom and I've found some bugs in it when using Seesmic and Astro amongst others. I think they need to upgrade for 2.2 compatibility before I upgrade the rom.

Just installed the latest ota. All if well. No problems like the last rom. No lame patches and bugfixes neccessary. Works good. Titanium backuped everything fine. Took me 5 minutes after full wipe to have all my stuff back to normal.

Did you do a "Backup all user apps + system data" and then "Restore missing apps + all system data" or did you just do apps? I'm new to best practices of Titanium Backup... Thanks!
I just do app+app data. No system crap...it isn't that hard for me to add the 4 icons and clock to the screen and setup some ringer preferences...even with all that it took me 5 minutes. Some people may have insane screens full of widgets and apps...mines pretty simple. Also I already fixed my build.prop Plus I only have 2 paid apps...titanium and phonemypc and I already pulled the apks from my phone to install manually without the market anyway. So I dunno.

You had to do a lame fix
Damn. I'd have to go back in and remove all of the bloatware, reinstall all of my apps, and everything else. Not sure I'm up for a minor fix.
Just installed it.. I have to say.. its THE BEST ota leak so far. It's far more stable than the first leak... and it seems like it doesn't drain the battery as much..
Most recent ota leak is a nice improvement over first 2.2 leak. And yeah all you guys saying full wipe is painful.... titanium backup is awesome and can have you back from a full wipe with everything restored and intact within minutes. This 2.2 is faster, fixes most of the problems of the first leak (yes market still needs the fix... so what? Easy easy fix....) and imo is very much worth the upgrade. But seriously only once you know how to extract the most from titanium....
I am more than happy to help anyone with advice on titanium usage or whatever.... pm if you have questions or need help

I've got it down to about a half hour doing a Titanium restore. I just use that to restore the apps and the data.
What takes most of the time is getting the screens set up again.
Still seem to have problems with the Market however... intermittent freezing, hangs on "downloading", etc.

Most stable rom?

Before I start asking my questions I want to say that this is my first android phone and I'm essentially a noob when it comes to rooting/flashing/custom roms etc. so please bear with me. I have been researching pretty heavily, but I'm finding I need some hand holding because my first attempt at rooting/flashing didn't go so well and I'm very reluctant to repeat the process all over again.
I'm currently on the stock DK17 that I flashed through ODIN per instructions found on this page (when it was still DK17, now it's DK28) : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853209
I'm finding that I'm unhappy with this setup and I want to run a custom ROM.
What I want above all else is speed, stability, and better battery life. I don't care about any frills, I want something that's simple, runs smoothly, and most importantly, isn't glitchy. I want to find a ROM that runs great, and once I do, I prefer to stick to it because I don't find flashing very recreational.
Some questions:
Should I update to DK28 or are there a bunch of issues with the leak? Are custom ROMs based off DK17 more reliable/less glitchy?
I used SDX stock app remover to remove a bunch of sprint/stock apps. Will this cause any issues if I decide to flash DK28 (or any other rom)?
I'm planning on using appbrain to "back up" my apps using the 'sync with appbrain' feature. From my understanding I just re-download appbrain and use it to download all the apps I previously had?
So what are my best options taking into account the criteria I mentioned? I was looking at Nebula (custom ROM) and it looks like something promising. I know you guys are thinking "just flash different ROMs and see which one you like you noob" but I'm looking to narrow down my options.
Thanks for any help and sorry for the long post,
-Dennis

Hif you want super stable with great batery life go with the 2.1 EE rom with the pheonix 1.43 kernel. If you want to be on froyo then I highly recoend mammons rom which is based of of the dk28 release which is more stable than dk17.
Removin sprint apps have no afect on flashing custom rms, it only will affect getting OTA's from sprint
Not sure about apbrain since I don't use it myself

I would go with mammons. So far its the must stable rom for me. Plus you get froyo!

For stability, right now, stick with 2.1. Go with either Syndicate ROM with Xtreme Kernel or Epic Experience with Phoenix Kernel.
Among the Froyo ROMs, I've had the best luck with Epic Experience and Nebula ROM. Viper and Quantum gave me some issues.
I'm going with Nebula as well. It runs great for me.
Dk28 has given me the best results with gps and data speeds. I've been using mammon's rom and its been awesome so far.

The reason everyone is giving you different recommendations is because everyone is a unique individual with different tastes and requirements in what they value in a custom rom. I am currently using Bonsai4all, but have tried most every other rom as well.
As far as not finding flashing recreational just keep doing it and as you become comfortable with the process you will start to like it a lot better. It's fun going to the Sprint store and jabbing away with the support/sales staff about the Epic and Evo while we are flashing new roms while we chat.
I've tried Syndicate, Viper, and Epic Experience (both the Eclair + Froyo versions), and I must say EE has been my favorite of the three.

Gingerblur

I realize that gingerblur is a modded rom, but im afraid to test it. Can anyone that uses it tell me what it looks like, how fast it is or what the benefits are?
Is gingerblur deodexed?
Sent from my Atrix using XDA App
Hey buddy I just read your thread about the update. Currently Gingerblur is not compatible with the newest firmware, so unless you feel like flashing the sbf again and then flashing Gingerblur, just wait until they update it for 1.5.7
I've been holding off on the update since I really like GB, it looks really great on my phone and the built in mods are quite useful for me. Yes, it is deodexed, and you may or may not notice a performance bump because of that but really the main benefits are that it looks real nice. Since we don't have custom kernels there isn't much we can modify performance wise quite yet.
Nothing to be afraid of installing or testing it, this is my first android phone and after less than a month I'm starting to get comfortable flashing, reflashing, and doing simple adb commands.

I'm also new to droid, the atrix being my first google phone, but I found gingerblur a piece of cake to install and configure. Looks tidy as, and maybe it's my imagination, but it definitely seems faster than Froyo.
I haven't used GladiAtrix though, so can't comment there.
Basically, it's a walk in the park to install and remove, so I'd say, if you're curious, just give it a test.
I guess I can try to find a script to remove gladiatrix and then try gingerblur

Gingerblur is awesome, and it is now compatible with the most recent update. Goto the DEV section and there are a lot of screenshots on the first page of the gingerblur post.
Yeah Gingerblur is pretty neat. It's not making any massive strides in changing the phone, but it cleans up a lot, and I think it looks a lot better. The upgrade process can be pretty long, but isn't particularly technical.
Yup, I'm a gingerblur fan now. It seems snappier(if possible!?), and GO launcher is silky smooth. Directions seem daunting at first, but once you read it thru once, you'll realize how easy they made it.

Right. Well to some extent. The reason I'm running the newest 1.1 version is it got me familiar with all of the stuff yet to come. Tenfar's CWM recovery works great and the updates from now on will be seamless so that was a huge plus. It looks like a painstaking process, but in reality it goes pretty quick if the directions are followed. Plus the added bonus of the bloatware being removed professionally and the gingerbread aesthetics give it the gold medal in my book.

Backup apps with titanium backup first off... and no installing gingerblur will not remove any apps, other than the stock Motoblur / bloatware apps & widgets. But these can be re-installed with the restore bloatware.zip, also found on the gingerblur download page.

Will do what is the benefit of rooting a phone. Do you get apps for free similar to jailbreaking?
Alright so here we go!
For root you want This Guide with Gefree/Visionary Read it several times, get root.
Install Rom Manager, Flash Clockwork Mod with this.
Good launchers to try are: Launcher Pro, ADW.
Good Apps are: GPS Status, Quadrant Free, Set Cpu (paid), Juice Defender, Adgree, Juice Plotter, SeePu, Shootme (for screengrabs), Wifi Analyser (to see strength of various wifi networks), Barcode Scanner (for QR Codes among others), Speetest, and lastly AdFree. You also should consider getting the Busybox Installer and Titanium Backup so you can back your applications up when you inevitably....
...Install a custom rom. There are a ton of roms to choose from. All of them have various merits and downsides. Personally for the beginner I always suggest CM 6.1.1 to get familiar with the idea of custom roms as it is super stable and not a huge departure from stock Froyo. A good rule of thumb when flashing roms is to (after making a nandroid backup in clockwork mod, accessed by pwr+vol down) always do a full wipe of phone data and cache. So many rom installs are messed up by not fully wiping your phone prior. I always run two full wipes and two cache wipes.
Depending on how you like your interface, you can select a ton of different roms through Rom Manager or downloading them right out of our android dev section. As with all things, always do your research. Read the damn thread to find out any bugs. The devs here are not infallible and frankly, some of them do a darn shoddy job in throwing together whatever the hell it is they want to call a rom over the weekend while absolutely trashed on Milwaukee's Beast.
Prospective roms are:
Virtuous 2.1: A clean SenseUI rom that is very predictable in battery life and sense experience.
Virtuous G-Free: A stripped down Gingerbread rom built by the same gentleman as Virtuous.
Virtuous 3.0 Sense: A sense 3.0 port that hasn't been updated in a while. Who knows if it is any good.
Cyanogen Mod 6: A nice retooling of froyo 2.2.x, this rom is incredibly stable and has very good battery life with preshoots kernel.
Cyanogen Mod 7: This is a retooling of Gingerbread 2.3.x, not as stable in my experience, however I know this will get better. Okay battery life, 7.0.3 is not as **** as 7.0. Wait till the next major update of 7.1 drops before flashing this rom.
I cannot speak for any of the other roms out here. I only say that you should always do your research and make sure to do nandroid backups. If you brick your phone, that really sucks cause the g2 kicks all sorts of ass
Edit; ROOT ACCESS MEANS ADMIN ACCESS. ROOT DRIVE MEANS THE BASE DIRECTORY OF YOUR SD CARD. DON'T **** IT UP OKAY.

One of the biggest features is overclocking. TAKE YOUR TIME reading though. My Desire Z is on the way but I've spent the past two weeks scoping out ROMs, learning how to root and use ADB just so I can do all of that as soon as I get the phone. I would definitely root though, and as soon as the official gingerbread ROM comes, someone on XDA will make a rooted version of it. So you will essentially have stock gingerbread with the ability to overclock.

IMO The best benefits to having a rooted device are
1) root-only apps like setcpu (but don't use this if the ROM/kernel has built-in cpu management), titanium backup (best backup app ever, hands down), themeing, etc
2) remove bloatware apps
3) custom ROM. think of it as a modified OS. they usually run faster, have little to no bloat, in most cases have better battery life, and have added functionality (cyanogenmod, especially)
without root, the best thing you can do is find great apps like home replacements aka launchers such as ADWLauncher (free version of the superior ADW Launcher EX), LauncherPro, etc
if you're new to Android you may not know that you can browse apps on your computer here https://market.android.com/ and whenever you click "install" it will automatically start downloading and installing on your phone!
a root method was mentioned previously, but I will have to recommend a different one considered to be the safest and most up to date by most.

So rooting helps me have a device that has much better performance. Sounds great to me, I'll look into it.
Is there anyway to get free apps etc? Don't ever want to pay haha.
Also what other tips do you guys have to take advantage of a smartphone?
Word of advice: the xda forums heavily frown upon those who promote or even mention pirated apps. These forums are powered by developers who put in their time and effort for average-joe users like us to use, free of charge! Donations are encouraged when possible. If you spent hundreds of hours writing an app and working out the bugs, I don't think you'd like it if someone downloaded your paid app for free. I didn't mean for this to sound like a lecture but just think about it, and if you're still interested you'll have to look elsewhere, as distributing pirated apps is against the xda forum rules.
Also if you're new to smartphones, you probably realized with added functionality such as facebook, twitter, gmail, and syncing of EVERYTHING possible, your battery life not as good as before you had a smartphone. In general keep account syncing/internet usage below unnecessary levels to save on battery life, among other things

Thanks I regularly try to do that with new phones so I don't have to ask a bunch of dumb questions or brick my phone.
And to xsteven77x (my multi-quote isn't behaving at the moment), I was not aware that a final GB rooted ROM was out... I thought they were only test ones. Would you mind posting a link to that?
EDIT: Is this the ROM you're talking about? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074852
It was leaked so how are they sure it's the final one?
If your going to root your phone and put a rom on it, HTCCLAY super cm7 v1.9 is my favorite. its smooth, lots of customization, and already has the set cpu thing built into it and had a good adjustable lockscreen. not to mention u can just keep putting new themes form theme chooser on it when u get bored instead of flashing a whole new rom. one prob with it though. it has trouble connecting sd card to computer so if and when u want to remove it you are going to have to restore to a previous back up of another rom or stock and then reapply the new rom. best of luck.

I am recommending to watch Virtuous Unity if you want to have HTC Sense 3.0. It's still being updated and fixed up from all the bugs, but I think the rom will be really good after the devs work the kinks out.

It's The Craziest Thing

Like an intelligent flashaholic, when I first rooted my phone, waaaaaaay back over 2 years ago, the firs thing I did was make a backup of my stock/rooted setup, then saved a copy on my computer. Every few months, I'll nandroid back, update any apps that need to be, then make a new, updated Backup.
Lately, I've been having a lot of problems with my phone, trying to run Jellybean ROMS, which has been a disaster. Even ruinning Kendall's Jellybread ROM, I have some issues with lagginess, occasional Force Closes, etc.
Yesterday morning, my phone was basically not usable, and not having time to play with anything because of work, I just flashed back to my stock/rooted ROM, updated it and have been running pure stock since. The weird thing is, it's the best my phone has run. Smooth, fast, everything working (Of course this is still Froyo, but still). It's just really ugly as hell, but it's amazing how smooth everything is.
OK, time to flash a ROM.....

I think if the stock ROM wasn't so ugly, then we'd have no use for customized ROMs. It's one of those things that allows us geeks to shine...
You know I have never even seen the stock froyo rom. Evo had already upgraded to gingerbread by the time I got mine. Maybe you could let me try out your stock froyo rom? ROFLMFAO!!!!!!! Heck maybe someone out here has a cupcake or donught I could use also. Then we could have a retro rom.

Hey hip, got a suggestion for your next flash.
Do your backup thing, wipe as usual, then flash rom.
Only this time before you reboot, push your log to sd. Then view it after everything is done...
Reason im saying this is mine would be fine then not...when I pulled the log fron recovery it actually showed that I had bad memory blocks an it was unable to repair/format/fix them..
Now my phone was and is usable still...but I cant flash all the roms. Only one that 100% worked was mazwoz.
So its just a thought bro, figured I'd share what I found. And without pulling the log I would have never seen it.

I pull the log most of the time myself and I also have bad blocks in multiple partitions. I have yet to have it cause any issues with any of the roms I flash. Also can I help you take over the world?!! Love me some pinky and the brain.

Lol, sometimes I forget that signature is there cuz I cant see it on Tapatalk. One of the Nocturnal guys made that for me.
Anyway, the roms would mostly flash on my phone. But some just didn't. I was testing rom for soap, tronit, an shaggy an none booted for me but worked fine for others.
Then I flashed say jmz rom an it worked fine. I started to notice that things weren't working.

Thanks. I was actually very concerned, but running the Hybrid MIUI we're releasing and it's fast as hell
Yes I mostly use the app so I don't get to see the cool signatures. Since I started doing the dev work I am on the PC more and must say there are a bunch of cool ones out now.

Heck if you think it is fast now just wait I have a couple more tricks left to pull out my hat. You ever run an odexed miui? Yes I will release a first ever (that I know of) odexed miui rom. This thing is crazy fast and get this all the apps that I preinstall will also be odexed so it will rocket like you have never seen. Just stand back and be amazed at the fastest miui to ever grace the og evo!!

Are MIUI mtz's universal or device specific?
I they are universal. I have some on my pc that i used on both the og and 3vo that my ex gf had.
FYI I dumped the preinstalled ics theme. So now any theme will install for the die hard miui user and the black ice mtz will be installed on the sdcard. The jb launcher is no longer default you can choose on boot which one you want. Now to get the ICS effect you go into settings themes and choose black ice. If you use the jb launcher you will need to go under launcher settings and reboot launcher. Now everything looks ics even the lockscreen.
