I did the grey blur Rom, loving it, but when it got rid of all the bloatware it got rid of my task killer. The one with auto end list. Anyone know how I can attain that again?

I use it to kill a few rogue apps that don't like to turn off and destroy my battery, like Navigon.

^ *sigh* There's still a need for it from time to time. That's why it was included in the original ROM, and even my Samsung has it too.
OP, you're stuck with "force stop" or you can download this:

^ which basically does the same thing as "force stop" but it saves you a few steps to get there, plus it lets you know what apps are also running (which is nice to know in case you need to single out a rogue app on your phone).
It's not as good as the stock task killer, but it will stop any app and sniff out the rogue ones.

Ok, just looked and I am running Greyblur and it has the stock task killer still there. Also on the gingerblur thread or site they have a zip file of stick bloatware, could be there.

Was asking a serious question, I have the same phone without the need so I was curious as to what apps are going nuts on their phones....as far as the read up on task killers comment, I was just giving general advise so they are not sweating it if they assumed they needed it.

If you download Autostarts or AutoRun Manager, you'll see apps that restart or start for such asinine reasons. After powering up or rebooting, many apps are set to startup even if you don't use them often. For example, the eBay app will start in the background for such system events as "Application Replaced" or "External apps available". So when I insert my microSD card and I have some .apks backed up on it by Astro, why should the eBay app start up in the background because the media scanner detected there are apks. Don't get me started on Google Maps, there are all sorts of crap that it starts for. I only want GoogleMaps running when I need it running, not when I install a new app or if I unistall an app or replace an app. While it might be great to have an instant lock on my location so I can instantly add to Latitude(which I don't use), it kinda sucks that I'll also be grabbing my charger sooner since it's running in the background.
Most good task managers will help kill those apps and have the option to put certain apps on an exclude to kill list, which gives you control of what is running and what is not. A good way to figure things out is to kill all your running apps in the task manager and see what will restart. You can put the ones you want and need running, such as widgets and apps that get updates, on an exclude to kill list...that helps with the whole "battery drains because app keeps having to restart" argument as to why task managers are "bad." I use Autostarts to prevent apps i don't want running from starting for useless reasons and Advanced Task Manager to force close ones when I don't need them any longer. However, there is a learning curve as to what you shutdown or prevent from running, as it may affect other apps.

Honeycomb frees up its own ram. Even though they appear to be running they are actually cached. If you go to settings, application, running services you will see what is truley running. On the top right hit cached and you will see the stuff that is open but not using CPU...ie not running.

Do not use a task killer unless the app in question is truely stuck.
Running services will continue to open themselves after you close them. Memory is handled by the OS and you have plenty left, I promise.
If you believe an app is malfunctioning and eating up CPU cycles, uninstall it, forcing it to close will do nothing.
If an app is not a service and not in the foreground, it is not running.

let them run, using a task manager is only making you drain more battery by having the apps continually restarting after force killing them.
honeycomb will manage your RAM and CPU just fine.

Task manager is the problem. Uninstall it right at the moment you see these comments!!!!

I really wish they would stop developing that virus they call an app. And I wish Verizon would quit pushing it on customers.
I have a luncher pro installed. I selected as my default home screen app, it was working fine. Recently every time i press home button i get a window asking me to select default home screen application. It does that at random, even though i checked the box before selecting launcher pro.
You could try clearing the defaults, then set it again. Under Settings - Applications - Manage Applications, find all the launchers and use the Clear data option for each.
Does this happen mainly after a reset? Do you have a app killer? Something that auto clears your caches?

I have a app killer, but i have set the program to be ignored. I also do have a auto cache clearer. Could that be causing the problem? aCCcleaner pro.

ATK's are BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD DO NOT USE THEM. 2.2 has them built them into the OS. this has been discussed numerous times.
That is most likely your problem, and you'll notice your battery life will go up as well.
cleaning the cache as nothing to do with. for it to ask you to use the phone is sutting down lancher pro, and removing the default settings, then it's starting back up on your own and since the phone doesn't know what launcher you want to use by default it's going to ask you.
I do have ATK, plus Process Manager. I will get rid of ATK see if it will fix the issue.

Its something that i have always used, to kill the apps that i was not using. From the Nexus days. Do i not need it? I just don't want apps running in the background and killing my battery and processor. I also have SetSPU for that purpose.

android phones are built off the linux shell.
Linux in nature are multitasking MONSTERS. when you are not using them they are setting dormant not using the processor and not using any resources. Applications in Linux will not run unless you tell them to. From reading the android market it looks like that app isn't running 24/7. But the ATK are constantly running looking for applications to kill, thus killing your battery in the process... On older 1.5 and 1.6 android and lower end units rocking 2.1 ATKs were acceptable, but not recommended, but on newer 2.2 and 2.3 units ATKs are not good.
Well I got rid of ATK, now left with Process Manager and SetCpu. Are you saying that I should get rid of those two as well?

no, i'm not saying that in the least a-lot of people use set CPU, that just manages your CPU.
And Processor manager looks like it doesn't run 24/7. You can keep it, i just wouldn't use it unless you have to.

i figured ATK was the problem. the last time i ran an ATK i had CM4 on my Magic. When i went to CM5 i used Swapper2 to help with memory management, and from cm6 to cm7 i haven't needed anything at all to make this phone rock.
again my thread was closed before I could reply. I am not using task killer to manage tasks. I always use taskiller manually. I like the ability to close things like pandora for music, from my main desktop as am doing other things. now it seems I have to run all over the place to close them. I find some stuff is in services, while others are in tasks... I find every time I get out of my car I have to manually shut down pandora from within pandora app.. because manually clicking the task killer button no longer works...
before this stride gets out of hand. it has nothing to do with auto task killing, or memory management..

Is there a way to stop a service from restarting? I find some things get back in there.. vlingo is a big one. Sip droid does too. Would be nice to stop a service completely for good without having to uninstall completely..

You can use TB and freeze what you don't want running in the background. Kind of a pain but at least you can be sure of it's inactivity.

Okay so whenever I'm done texting or have to close an app to go back to my home screen all of the apps and widgets don't show up and I have wait for them to reload again.. it gets annoying cause this happens about 90% of the time I close an app. Is there a way to fix this thing or preventing from happening? >.<

For some reason, you have an app that is running that is taking enough cache memory that it is causing TW to close, anytime you are leaving it, instead of staying in memory. This is causing a 'respawn' (everything has to reload.). You have 2 choices here.
1. Figure out what app, or apps are running that you don't need, and shut them down.
2. switch to a lighter launcher. On the surface, zeam and adw are two of the lightest out there, but I've had the best luck in low memory situations with go launcher, myself.
In order to find which apps are doing this, my recommendation is to get rom toolbox (free is fine), and look in the 'auto start manager'. I'm sure there are several apps that do the same thing, but RTb is my preference. Once you get into that section, look at the list of what is starting on boot, and disable the ones you don't need. This won't make the app useless, but it will keep it from running in the background until you open it yourself.

A little off the main topic but speaking of rom toolbox or Tibu for that matter, anytime I use them to either, say, freeze or uninstall anything , both apps just sit there with box showing me there uninstalling or freezing. Only way to stop is to go into manage apps and stop them but they end up doing what wanted to do. Anyone else have this happen, any fix,annoying if anything.

I recommend using Titanium backup.. it's easier to use and easy to understand. Won't have to deal with this whole freezing crap.

I know exactly what you mean. I've been occasionally having the same problem with Titanium Backup. It doesn't happen every time, but enough lately that I've noticed it. Not sure of any fix, but I'll post if I find one. I guess it's not that big of a problem considering it ultimately uninstalls/freezes whatever it's supposed to, but it sure is annoying.

This. Your phone is not like your PC, so stop treating it like one. The way Android treats memory, having high RAM usage is actually a good thing. Not to mention that aside from being useless and counterproductive, task killers are a huge battery drain.

etc keep draining battery.Now don't say these r useless too and I should stop using them. I know how android works with Ram and all that. Have been using this fone for over 18 months. I just want to know about dat kind of taskiller

Well, if battery drain is your problem, then don't use a task killer -- that'll just be compounding the issue. As for how to deal with your battery drain, I've heard some reports about how turning off Facebook sync worked for some people.
Another option would be getting Watchdog Task Manager by Zomut from the Play Store (I've used it myself). It's not the typical task killer since rather than monitoring RAM, it instead keeps an eye on CPU usage (which is what causes battery drain) and notifies you when an app consumes too many CPU cycles and let's you decide whether to kill that app. It should also allow you to set a CPU threshold for certain apps, and autokill when the app exceeds that threshold.

Use Automatic Task Killer.free on gapps. U just have to select the apps u want to be killed and it kills them when ur screen is off.

Autorun Manager is a bit difficult to use for new users. u ll have to search for boot receivers and network change receivers among the receiver list for a particular app. if u disable an imp receiver then it ll forbid the app from running. so be careful. or else u can use other managers like Lidroid toolbox or Rom toolbox which are easy to use. Once I closed a receiver of poweramp and it didn't open up
I don't know if I'm doing anything wrong but I disabled "Google play" at start up through from toolbox however whenever I go back to the list it reactivates itself...

which toolbox did u use? u should have USB debugging turned on
The whole debate surrounding task killers are stupid. Our phones have low memory and we are running custom built roms on our devices which tend to require more from our hardware in the case of ICS.
I like the ES TaskManager/File Explorer combo, has a nice task manager, autostart feature and apk backups.
