Format the internal storage? - Atrix 4G General

Sorry I'm fairly new to Android and I tried to find the solution myself but didn't turn up any "sure-fire" results.
I'm wanting to return my phone/app data back to default like when I got it; the "factory reset" option in the phone or tenfar's cwm doesn't do exactly what I want it to do... I want it to erase all my data: music pictures app settings etc but want to keep my current sbf/os
Is it safe if I format the internal SD? I have a 16gb Micro SD if that matters even an ounce...
I have gingerblur 3.1 on the new OTA...I want to keep that...just not everything else...

Your 16gb Micro SD is NOT your internal SD. Why not just SBF and start fresh if you want to pretty much erase everything except the GB3.1 mod.?

You can go to storage option in storage. unmount the internal SD card and format it. it will delete pics/music and data for apps. but if u wanna delete apps u will have to do that in settings and delete them manually..

Yea i figured it out after i made the post, thanks though

Being a newb SUCKS!

Ok so.. I finally after months flashed my second rom
HAd some trouble, I have to admit..
DC~~
I had trouble and I did some wiping and messing with my SD chip and that was the only way I could functionally get a flash..
I just spent a day and a half setting my phone up to my liking and its become apparent apps2sd isn't working and my SD card only has one 1.5 partition out of 2 gb.
Sorry if there are posts with directions of how to work from this point to keep everything while enabling apps2sd and transfering
I dont know where to start searching.
Thanks guys.

get a app called dconfig, it has an option to move your apps so they're on the card.
other than that im not sure what youre asking.
it might be simpler just to flash your phone, format your card and start from scratch.

do some searching on here, goggle & ppcgeeks for how to root, flash a recovery image, partition your sd card and flash a rom. just make sure the guide you are using and the rom you use is for a cdma based hero.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=90380 heres good guide to get you started.
I'm rooted I might just need to flash the Rom with the SD card.formatted correctly... I'm going to try to re find where the apps are stored and save them... id love to just be able to correct my SD config and set up apps2sd and move em over so I can keep my home screen set up as well as the info supplied in my apps and todo lists..
Thanks for the info ... on the road right now (passenger.seat )
Maybe I'm not a newb, I'm just stupid... I rooted using ubuntu karmic and I had apps2sd working before I moved to damage control
Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
hmm.. Damage control rom comes with Dconfig and it has apps2sd enabled and move apps to sd checked.
Ok heres the thing..
I had a Modaco rom before and with apps2sd enabled and the SD formatted properly.
Plugging my phone into a computer would open up 2 drives... One 1 designated to be 1.5 gb and another .5 gb
How ever now I only see one.. the 1.5 gb
My memory is running low as if everything i've installed is in the phone.
searching through the phone i can't seem to find where these apps are being saved...
Are they on the elusive .5 gb partition I can't seem to see??
i think not... I just rebooted and my available space is 63.74mb
It's all becoming a no brainer that i should reflash the rom with the correct specifications to the SD chip...
But what I want to know, is there a way around this. ( I don't see any options, but I'd love to reformat my SD correctly and get apps2sd working on my own, moving all my apps over there while keeping any stored data intact...) <--- is this possible??
[maybe i should learn how to communicate clearly LOL]
For the moment, Ill back up my SD contents and hunt down how to partition correctly.. then I'll see if I can't find the folders where it is storing downloaded apps... then I'll disable then enable the apps2sd setting in dconfig and download an app... if all goes well i'll start pushing my apps over and do the whol "fix apk uid" in the recovery menu...
Hell maybe ill even decide to get a newer recovery besides 1.2.3 while im at it hahah.. any suggestions would be appreciated

So... Why is my memory so low???
I'm about to take my SD chip out and see if I cannot access the contents of these folders without it in...
MY APPS2SD IS WORKING AND HAS BEEN WORKING
Sorry guys... somethings just up[or rather DOWN] with my memory and my SD card reads differently...

There's only one way to stop being a n00b: Learn.
You're doing fine. My suggestion is to not take it all on at once. Focus on one problem, fix it, learn from it and move on to the next one. You'll be a pro in no time.
I would guess that you need to repartition the SD card when moving from one ROM to the next, but I've never really played with apps2sd. See? You know more about it than I do!
download app: quick systems info
to see if your a2sd is working and how much is being used.
use the dconfig to make sure you have dalvik cached moved to sd... reboot the phone.
i am guessing at this....
you say you had a2sd working before with Madaco and could see 2 drives... that sounds wrong to me. if a2sd was working, then you should not see the 2nd drive. you are only able to see the main larger drive and that is it.. the others are used by android and not available to us.
now that you can not see the 2nd drive. sounds like a2sd is working. the app i suggested should confirm for you.
I did get everything working and my memory remains the same when I install applications.... perhaps I could see the second drive because I'm running Linux and/or the way I formatted the sd or the extension...
Sent from my HERO200 using Tapatalk
I think what you are describing is your SD-EXT partition (the a2sd partition you made). If you have a 2GB card and partitioned your card to be .5GB EXT, then it will appear your SD is 1.5GB. You get what I'm saying?
I used to be able to see 2 partitions as well. I think it was only with 1.5 ROMs.
If you want to mount both partitions then all you need to do is reboot into recovery and select the USB mount. Then both partitions will show up.
But you really don't need to mess with that second partition. Go to the market and download Titanium Backup. That will backup all your apps and settings. Restoring is a little annoying to do since you have to click for every app but if you buy the donate version then you don't have to do that.

Easiest way to format my SD card and retain my data?

Hey guys,
I'm having a few issues w my X10, my call log and contacts dont show up half the time when I boot up my phone and my last call widget always freezes. It's really really bugging me and I think I need to try formatting my SD card.
How do I format my SD card and put all my data back on it after so my phone is the same after the format?
Thanks
Call log, contacts, etc have nothing to do with the sdcard, unless you choose to back them up - which is the only time they'll be on there.

hmmm so I should be 'reformatting' my phone then right?
I just rooted and used installed titaniam backup... what should I do to reformat and then restore all my settings? Do I lose root when I reformat my phone?
Thanks a lot!

I have titanium backup but I just got it today with root and am not sure how to reformat my phone while restoring everyhitng to how it is right now
Back everything up using titanium, and then do a factory reset.
Reinstall titanium, then restore.
Is suggest mybackup n al
helps you save other stuff 2 such as contacts n msgz

thanks for all the help guys! gonna do a factory reset now... hoping for the best
thanks!
I just recently factory reset my phone and I was wondering what was the easiest way to get root back on my phone.
I'm content with keeping R2BA023 pretty much just because I know it works and my battery is consistent enough for me to get through an average day, so reflashing with one of the newer models and then rooting isn't exactly what I want to do.
nm got it!
just restored... titanium backup is the nuts
fk, just did a restore and the problem is still there.... guess I have to try formatting SD card now...
If I want to format, do I plug phone to the computer, mount SD card -> copy all files to my computer -> format sd card -> copy all files back to SD card -> unmount SD card
Is that what I do?
Thanks!
Yup pretty much

How to Start Over Completely with Your Droid X

I've spent a few months on this forum and would like to give back...thus I am creating a guide on how to completely wipe your Droid X in order to start 100% fresh.
Disclaimer: I hold no responsibility if anything happens to your phone. Anything you do is your choice, not mine.
This Guide is mainly meant for ROOTED Droid X's.
First step is to follow this guide: http://androidforums.com/droid-x-all-things-root/254605-update-2-3-340-easily.html#post2241194
After rerooting, turn on the phone, plug it in, and copy your SD Card to your computer desktop. Unplug the phone from the computer and Bootstrap Recovery.
In the Bootstrap Recovery, scroll to Wipe Data/Factory Reset and Confirm.
Scroll Back and click mounts and storage, for anything that has a mount in front of it, click it and click confirm.
Navigate back to main menu and then to advanced. Scroll down to advanced and select Wipe Battery Stats and Wipe Dalvich Cache.
Reboot and plug in your phone to computer.
Copy anything important back to your SD Card (launcher backups, photos, music, clockwordmod, etc.)
Boot back into Bootstrap Recovery and wipe data/factory reset once again, and then mount cache and data again, and then wipe Dalvich Cache Again.
Next, flash a custom Rom by "install .zip from SD)
You should now have a fresh phone and fresh SD Card(SD cards are known to cause problems sometimes such and freezing/locking up so this is a good way to start over.)
If I left anything out or made any mistakes please correct me.
Um
Thanks?
I feel like this would be common knowledge for anyone browsing the Development forum and trying out custom ROMs.
Nice writeup for the ubernewbs though.
EDIT: You reposted this from another forum and didn't even make the hyperlink to update to 2.3.340, so this guide is almost useless.

I see people ask about how to start over again all the time, and honestly I doubt many people know about clearing everything, most people just know about clearing the cache an data.
Thanks for the snarky comment
EDIT: No I fixed that already.
there's no mention of formatting the SD card in your write up, so there'd really be no need to back it up. And the SD card doesn't get touched when formatting data everything stays on there still so when the market starts reinstalling apps the app data is still available from the SD card
although i still recommend backing up your SD card every now and again, just in case of emergency

+1 on the periodic backup of the SD card.
SD cards do fail!!
The main cause is shifting gears too fast (going from PC to Mass Storage),give it 8 seconds and pulling the USB cord.

When I say, scroll down and click everything with mount in front of it, SD Card is included and your SD gets reformatted.
I think it'd be faster to flash the maderstcok 2.3.340 update zip. It is essentailly an SBF run through cwm. It will truly get you started from scratch.
Yea, if its an elected return to stock maderstock340.zip is a much simpler option. Also sd card backup is essential for anyone with music, files, photos they want to keep. I burned up one card already due to a faulty card and lost the contents. I will also add several roms now add folders to the sd card so it really isn't bad practice to delete those folders or wipe the card.
+1 also that YES, tons of people put roms on every day without the proper knowledge of how to revert to stock via sbf or update.zip. So I think this should be a sticky personally.

Agreed! Maderstock is the way to go for getting back to stock! Easy flash and you're fresh and clean!

Making atrix safe to sell (preparations)

Can someone help me out it would be greatly appreciated. How would I make sure my phone is safe to sell as far as security reasons go? I dont want any of my personal information still on here. I'm running cm7 and i just did a factory reset and connected my phone to my computer and moved everything from mnt/emmc to my computer but when i go under file manager on my phone there seems to still be some files left behind? are these safe to leave? How would i go about preparing my phone to sell. Some of the files in /mnt/emmc are stuff like .spotlight-v100, .Trashes, .adobe, .taggedFriendPhotos, LOST.DIR, and theres some other stuff aswell
You should definitely format the internal storage, use your computer. There's nothing left after that.

Okay how do I do that. I'm on mac. And under security>factory reset it told me it would wipe the internal storage but I guess that didn't really do anything. So after I connect it to my computer then what do I do?

Ouch, sorry mate, I never even touched a Mac..
Never touched a mac, but
in windows you open the file manager. find your device , should be listed as a "usb storage" device. Right click and choose format.
ta-da!
H'm it seems like the factory reset should have got rid of these files. Should I worry about them? And would formatting on my computer get rid of these files?
H'm it seems like the factory reset should have got rid of these files. Should I worry about them? And would formatting on my computer get rid of these files?
what kind of files you talking about?
".spotlight-v100, .Trashes, .adobe, .taggedFriendPhotos, LOST.DIR, and theres some other stuff aswell." Folders like these....and there not deleting even after a factory reset
You can always use fastboot and erase userdata, data, cache etc
factory reset doesnt touch your internal storage. it only wipes /data and /system
use the FORMAT sdcard option in the settings....
you could do a fastboot -w and then install a fruitcake, can't you? i've never used -w before, dunno if it deletes everything on the internal storage or not.
I have gone through quite a bit of phones until i got to this one and all you really need to do is restore factory defaults and keep your sd card

except that this one has INTERNAL storage where a lot of other phones do not....especially most HTC phones
you have to format internal sd or there will be lots of data left on the phone

Exactly. The Atrix has its internal SD and an external. If you go into Menu > Settings > Storage, you should be able to wipe the memory of your two SD cards.

Makes sense that I would think that seeing that my last phone was actually an HTC
Thanks though mate, now I know for when it comes time to sell this phone

wipe SD card - bad idea?

Getting a bit bored of the lagging, crashing and poor performance of my Defy. I'm currently on CyanMobile (only installed a couple of months ago)... I'm thinking there's something deeper wrong with my phone.... I'm tempted to wipe it ALL and start again: both the phone itself and the SD card
I can back up my music and photos/videos, but is there anything else I should be careful about deleting? I don't really mind about Titanium backing up my apps: I could just delete them all and download them again: I'm not too attached to anything
If I go ahead and format the SD card, is it best to do it from within Recovery? Or from my PC?
cheers
It's better to format SD card in recovery.first make a backup on pc.after that, you can do it.
