Video formats - Nexus S General

A few weeks ago I saw a topic on here about this and I was wondering if that same technique work on the 4G version of the Nexus?
Also just wondering why the Nexus doesn't play or decode from hardware as the other Samsung Galaxy S phones ...
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App

The galaxy S phones support more codecs becasue Samsung put them into there galaxy s ROMS and its tied into the touchwiz framework.
Nexus S is is more than capable of decoding we just need the codecs. Ever since 2.3.3 update we have x264 support with is a popular format for HD videos you find online.
Problem is still no sound and even when converting sound to a format thats supported doesn't play properly
we have to wait for touchwiz port which is in the process of being ported
or google to include them in future update
ATM mobo player is your best bet as far as video player''

I've also found that rockplayer plays some files that moboplayer won't play on my phone. Mainly divx files.

Video formats - players
I was surprised at first that Nexus S didn't support many vid formats out of the box.
I wondered when Rockplayer had to do software decoding, but it works good.
Sound is fine.
Rockplayer has played every video file type I've thrown at it so far.
Mostly x264 in mkv and avi, divx avi...

Thanks guys ill definitely check those out ...
I mostly played on my SGS4G MKV AVI DVIX files for movies...

Best Xvid, divx for android

Finally, a .avi .mkv player with nice fps. I recommend:
ROCKPLAYER The best xvid divx player on android is now on public beta, expires 15.july. Test it, buy it when its on market, support the developers.

I think after Samsung release the Galaxy S we'll get a good media player ported as that can natively play divx xvid and even h264, so it shouldn't be too long, maybe two months or so?

There was a story going round that HTC was going to update the Desire with support for XviD/DivX.
As to H264 - given that H264 is the native video format for Android, we've already got it!

Dave
I think HTC are saving the goods for the FroYo rollout
Roll on another few weeks!
Maybe someone will port over the Archos 5 IMT media player. It works nicely on Android.
Highly irritating. Google Format Factory in the mean time. Converts divx to mp4.
is there a way someone dump the galaxy s codecs or any codec from android devices that play divx files ???? we have such a powerfull device and we cannot see a movie without converting it...
I honestly don't give a crap about xvid/divx, that's a 20th century format . I want 720p mkv playback/recording
Search for Rockplayer on Google, it plays divx flawlessly.
Mod. edit: This is a beta, the developer didn't consent it's distribution. Publishing it would be posting warez, so better don't.http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6805512#post6805512http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6805512#post6805512

yeah your probably right, haha (deleted)
EDIT: just tested it, plays .avi spot on - no more converting
Yep. But now I need a biiger SD card. lol
I'm only using it to play TV shows on the go so if I download something the night before I'll just bung it on my Desire and watch at Lunch when at work
It plays mkv h264 @ 720p too but at 5fps so looks like they need to enable some more Snapdragon acceleration for h.264
I'll stick with converting to x264 in an MP4 container. Just tried this with a normal divx episode, playing it causes 100% cpu constantly.
Takes me maybe 8 minutes to convert it and the MP4 uses around 35-40% cpu power.

Divx

Will nexus s have Divx support is know you can use rock player and stuff but I think on the galaxy s line phones All run 720p Divx formats far better than rock player.... what do you guys think?
Sent from my SGH-T849 using XDA App
I hope so but I doubt it. Nexus One can't do it.
i really hope sou. That is my main selling point. Galaxy s could perfectly play mkv. and divx. in 720p, even with a subtitles. If nexus s cant i would be very disappointed
i dout that will be installed, maybe try to extract that that from Galaxy s?
Will probably need the whole touchwiz framework along with the corresponding apps (video player, divx etc) for it to work. Haven't tried CM 6.1 Beta 3 for my i9000, but from what I've heard, it doesn't work on there.
I don't see why it wouldnt. The other 9000 galaxy s variants all play it. Why wouldn't this one?

Because its pure Google and previous android dont have the proper vid and audio codecs.
But im confused on how codecs work on this phones because I think the galaxy s line are all hard coded were other none supported devices use crappy software acceleration
I'm really hoping its supports all the great codecs the galaxy S line did but im not getting my hopes up. If not this is going to be my first request from developers ill make a hefty donation to get this avi, xvid .mkv and ac3 working again
those codecs were built into the system of the Galaxy S phones.
The Nexus S will not have any of them so we'll be forced to use other apps.
However, with any luck some good developer may be able to hack them out of touchwiz and add them into a custom stock rom, i wouldn't hold my breath though.
Basically your gonna be using rockplayer, or convert your movies to something othe than divx.
Use RockPlayer or VPlayer! Both are good apps, the latter one is free.

yeah, but with does two apps everything with a little higher quality is more like a slideshow instead of movie. Only thing they can play are low quality divx. Well, we still have converting but then again whats the purpose of that. We are all trying to avoid converting because its boring and takes time. Comon google, bring some codec support
Yea i used rockplayer back with my N1 garbage only software rendered
better off using handbrake and re-encode to mp4 and use android default player
Galaxy s is hardware rendered and run and look fantastic on SAMOLED esp when running 1280x720 HD avi, mkv files
I can look past everything else taken away but IDK i really like my video support on my vibrant
=
That's like the one thing Samsung did right with the software, was include a very good media player.
Can anyone, from those who got one today, confirm if it has DivX or not
I have a Nexus S and I can confirm it has no divx support. I can also confirm that vplayer beta is not supported on the Nexus S and will force close when attempting to open a video file.
Is Rockplayer the only option?
no divx but can it play mkv ?
How does Rockplayer work with HD videos that are not 720P?

Rockplayer force closes as well with divx.
Rockplayer, vPlayer and all other DIVX players i tested from market are force closing as soon as you try to play a movie file.
Anyone has found a solution to play all the media files(mkv, divx) on the Nexus S? RockPlayer & VPlayer both don't work. I think they need to update the app for 2.3..

MKV files

Hi I have a nexus 7 and want to move some videos from my pc to the tablet but a couple of them are in mkv format. Does anyone know if there are any good mkv converters in the market(google play). I know there are plenty out there but has anyone used one on their Nexus 7, and can confirm they work ok? Or is it best to convert it first on my Windows 7 desktop before transfering to the Nexus
Thanks in advance
I use BSPlayer to play MKV files. It plays them perfectly smooth and with sound. I've also tried others, such as MXPlayer, but that plays videos without sound.
MKV is a container format which have many Codecs.
Convert the video with your PC.

In my experience, MoboPlayer is the best and MXPlayer follows it!!
I've been playing MKVs locally and across my home network with XBMC
Works great for cover art and subtitles. No lagging or any other issues so far
Thanks again for the replies, believe it or not while I was playing around adding files to my nexus(or trying to I should say) i decided to listen through haedphones. I`ve had it for over a week and have only listened through the speaker, and now I find my headphone jack is not working, so have contacted Google and am getting it replaced.
I usually try all functions straight away and feel stupid that its taken me over a week before i tried headphones
MXPlayer is my first choice and diceplayer is second.

You can try using airdroid.

I use mxplayer but if you want to make them mp4 without a full re-encode, use Xmedia Recode. It will take a large MKV to an MP4 in less than 10 minutes typically.
Generally i use mkvavi2mp4 http://sourceforge.net/projects/mkvavi2mp4/
Only recodes audio when its not compatible with mp4.
I've also used gotsent in the past which worked ok but tended to recode the video when i didn't want.

@OP, Mx Player plays .MKVs, but once in a while it has problems with a certain video, in my experience. In that case I use Dice player [Now ad-free version is Free, donationware]. Also Mx Video doesn't seem to be able to play .AVI with H/W decoding. For some reason Dice Player can though. I dunno why Mx Video doesn't make it so they can H/W decode .AVIs too but nonetheless, it works great for .MKV and .MP4 [x264, h264, etc].

If Mx Video doesn't have any sound, touch the Note icon and select S/W. It will S/W decode pretty much any sound [including AC3] with S/W, but a lot of times it can't decode a certain sound codec with H/W. You can use H/W video and S/W sound at the same time.

BSPlayer is the best out there for mkv IMO. Smooth as butter, also over the network e.g. using a cifs mount.

mkv no sound?

I tried a bunch of video player and the stock player. My mkv files play fine without any sound. they all have sound on my Note 10.1... any ideas? I didn't expect this
P/S: just found the solution. issue solved with BSplayer... meh I didn't expect this at all. Samsung note tablet can play everything nicely tho.
Having the same issue and experimenting now, so far neither SD or HD h264 mkvs are playing nice through hardware decoding (I either only get software with sound on a low frame rate or hardware with smooth frame rate and no sound). My guess is we are going to have to wait for some folks more talented then myself to put together a custom kernel/codecs to get things running properly.
Edit: tried bsplayer solution, it works decent enough for now, playing 720p mkv smooth enough (around 28fps) with software decoding, sure that's going to eat battery but great workaround in the meantime

Keep in mind that Samsung has the best native codec support of any Android vendor, and will pay the licensing fees for those codecs to be installed on their proprietary devices like the Note or Tab or GS line.
Stock Android as found on the N10 is 100% open source, and Google doesn't necessarily pay for third-party codec support, they leave that to the end user and third-party applications to deal with.
NO PROBLEM (Hakuna Matata), just download BS PLAYER, it plays everything, if the sound is a little bit low for you, then purchase the BS PLAYER PRO version , it increases the sound by 200%.....

MX Player is usually my go-to player, but it does not decode DTS audio due to licensing restrictions. VLC does decode DTS audio, which is why I suggested it. If you are in the USA you have to download the nightly version from the site since it's blocked on the Play Store.

MKV file support on Note 3

Hi guys. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed. It seems my Note 3 won't play the audio from any MKV files I put on there. My Note 2 & S3 both play the files with ease and also let me stream them to my TV. However when I play an MKV on my Note 3, the video players but displays an error message regarding the Audio. Anyone else noticed this? Not sure if Sammy are removing the Codecs from future software updates. I guess we'll find out in the coming days when they roll out 4.3 for the S3 & Note 2.

its the same on n900, its lacking of support for audio codecs... you have to use Mxplayer or another one and use H/W decode and its all good...
Use mx player and you have to download the dts codec for mx player which can be found in xda. The dts codec does not come with mx player due to copyright issues. Just load the codec in mx player by going to custom codec which can be found in settings - > decoder

License issues with the h.264 and ac3 codecs.
Diceplayer has been forced to remove the support for them as well. MX and BSplayer don't play DTS audio.
It's a really pathetic attempt to halt piracy. (Since those are the most used codecs in pirated videos.)
Use VLC . It plays everything, Comes with all codecs and doesn't give a sh*t about licence issues. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc.betav7neon

You're going to see this problem on all updated phones and versions.
Just use another app. I've got about 4TB of various videofiles, amongst which h.264 ac3 .mkv's, and they play fine.
Or grab an old apk version of Dice. 2.0.53 still supports them.
here's the solution
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/general/gn3-ac3-support-mod-pako777-t2867140
MKV may contain codecs that are not compatible with Samsung Galaxy Smartphone.
To solve this issue, you'd better to convert MKV to Samsung Note supported format with Faasoft Samsung Video Converter.
Hope it is what you are looking for.
In order to play all MKV, AVI, VOB, TiVo, MPG, WMV, FLV/F4V videos on Galaxy Note 3 properly, you'd better convert videos into Galaxy Note 3 supported video formats first before transferring them to Note 3. Along with some help from third-party software, this can be done effortlessly.
brorsoft.com/how-to/get-galaxy-note-3-play-avi-mkv-vob-mpg-files.html
Meh, VLC Player still plays everything without a single objection. It's open-source.
And the best part? You don't have to spend hours re-encoding all your blurays..
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.videolan.vlc
The problem isn't Android or the Note 3, it's copyright. Copyright that led to mkv support being removed from mediaplayers made by more obedient companies. VLC is opensource, they don't listen to copyright companies.
(Why did they enforce the removal of MKV, you might ask? Because it's the main container used for pirated HD videos these days. It's a lame anti-piracy method that once again affects paying customers more.)
Vlc player and mx player as suggested above are right solutions to play. Mkv files. Don't go for installing codes N stuff
