No DivX Player for N1?

How come there are no divx player for this pretty device yet? I tried yxflash but it only played the first 20 secs.

so i hope something will happen very soon!

I bought yxplayer, only to have it be very jittery playing AVI files.... So I ended up using Doubletwist to convert and sync the videos to my N1 and this works flawlessly.
However, if Coreplayer comes to the N1, this will indeed be awesome. I was using it on my HD2 work phone, and its top notch, I'd pay double the Winmo version for it if it was to come out on Android!

There is talk of the Bravo playing divx out of the box, so hopefully it can be ported across.

I have an archos 5 internet tablet with android 1.6 and archos has their own hardware accelerated video player its ridicules it plays pretty much every video formats including 720p mkv and 720p youtube videos, and most audio codecs including ac3.
Wonder if someone here could figure a way to port it to the N1.

also the archos has a 4.8 screen but runs at the 800x480 as the N1
and its specs are lower than the N1

There is actually no such thing as "DivX".
What they are selling is actually H.263/MPEG4-ASP and using a BAD VALUE FOURCC.
As a result, ALL players can play so-called "DivX" files as long as you fix the fourcc and package it in a sensible container (i.e. 3gp or mp4). No transcoding is required unless the video uses a bitrate or resolution that is just too far out of the devices specifications to decode.
Repackaging is trivial -- you can just run the files through ffmpeg with -f option to set a sane fourcc and setting the audio and video codecs to "copy".

Why don't we have DivX playback yet?

Yes i was wondering that too!!!
I mean when i copy an .avi movie to my phone, the only player that manages to play the file is the yxflash with awful perfomance...so what in the heck ?
There is 1GHz cpu behind this device!

Coreplayer for android is still in the works so we all just have to wait on that.

When you compile crap it is still crap. Even if you run it on a Snapdragon.
CorePlayer was very good on WinMo, so let's hope they bring it to Android soon.

My understanding of the "no Divx" issue, has more to do with Android OS not supporting the codec.
The reason why Coreplayer isnt out yet is exactly this reason. Once theres a codec supporting HW accelleration, then Coreplayer will be released.

Yup, and if you go to coreplayers website, they have a blog/forum discussing this... in it, they point out that they have been working very closely with Google on improving the NDK and SDK so that it has native support. Following 2.0/1 being released, they announced it had the graphics and framework, and that they were hoping the next version would/will have the codecs... it also seems it is possible the NDK just needs to be updated, not even the entire OS itself, although that might be a bit dirty for such a huge increase in codec support.

android 1.5 wasnt capable of it due to a crappy SDK.

VLC needs codecs too. Its developers just decided to include the codecs with the app instead of relying on the OS's codecs.
That is exactly what the CoreCodecs team is doing btw.

Very easy workaround
This a very quick and easy workaround to divx and xvid.
Download avidemux from here http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/download.html
Then re-code the file, but here's the secret - keep the video as it is "Copy". Change the audio to aac, and re-save it in an mpeg4 containter (m4v). The whole process take about 3 minutes for a full-length 800MB movie. The resulting file can be played smooth as silk in the stock player.

Tried this just now (previously tried with other tools in Jan). Was hoping....but it didnt work

But then again, even if it does work, the whole point is that it would be nice to play our videos WITHOUT having to re-encode like Spica-owners can do.

What in the HELL is the hold up?? DivX should have been ported to ANY other Android device ages ago

In addition to changing the container, you also have to change the FOURCC. That is just a 4-character code identifying the video encoding. Your phone won't recognize any stupid crap like DIVX or XVID -- it will only recognize the CORRECT fourcc, which is H263

The hold up is that codecs are part of the framework, and almost all Android video players just use the frameworks video playback facilities. To add DIVX playback you'd need a rooted device.
Additionally, I'll bet the Spica's divx playback is limited to a max resolution/bitrate like Android's h264 support.

I think a lot of people who would want this have root already or (would be willing to) anyway. Plus, there are already plenty of apps on the Market that are root-only.

The Archos 5 Internet Tabled (w/ Android) can play Divx, xvid and mostly any other video format, mkv and HD included. Of course, that is because they have a proprietary player.
The Desire is rumored to get an update soon that will allow it to play Divx files. The hardware is more than capable of doing it!

How well does yxflash work with playing back avi-files on the Desire?
I've tried playing 700 mb video (624x352, bitrate aprox. 1500, framrate 25) on a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 with yxflash, and it didn't handle it very well. My
Samsung Omnia HD is able to play the file without a problem.

Have installed it on mine and it plays the divx pretty well. Very slightly jerky, but very watchable. It could also be the encoding as it is the only one I have tried so far.

i found xyflash on the desire pretty poor. playing a tv show in divx format. very choppy frame rate.

Odd. Anyway I've discovered doubleTwist now. It's very good. I synced my divx video folder with my phone and as it copies the files it converts on the fly to mp4 format. Works like a dream.

Also, keep an eye out for CorePlayer.
It's in development and sold make an excellent player of al formats for us.

Quite agree coreplayer would be great i am suprised that they have not done it allready.

i had yxflash on my g1 and it played most avi's smoothly.. considering the hardware 528mhz to 1ghz - with new gfx hardware also.
even winmobile 6.1 pro on my treo 750 could play avi fine.

No it can't.

Convert you file with mencoder to mp4 and play it on the Desire.
I zipped the necessary files:

Just drag and drop the file you want to convert on the file convert2desire(.bat).
After waiting some time your file will be converted in the ideal .mp4 format for the Desire.
You will find it in the same directory as the convert2desire(.bat) file.

I will not buy an Android phone before a good .avi/divx player is available. I'm using WM since 2000 and my entire collection of video's is /avi/divx/mkv.
I just couldn't believe my ears when I heard Android (on HTC Desire) can't play those formats.

Rockplayerbase (aka rockplayer) works perfectly. It's now in open beta. Search for it.

I've been searching the net for any information about MKV playback on Android and found this one:

You can also get the yxplayer from Android Market and I would recommend this.
But I don't know whether it has mkv playback. The only tool I know is called "RockPlayerBase" which is able to play mkv but not very smooth (averaged 16 fps on my Desire). I assume, you can get this tool from here... anywhere^^ just search.

16fps if you are lucky! more like 5 most of the time. I think the rockplayer is a software player so its using just the brute force of the CPU. Thats not bad considering most Atom based netbooks cant play MKVs smoothly without an HD decoder card...
Maybe one day we will get some hardware assistance..

Not sure if this will help at all, but mkv2vob converts mkv files to either vob or mpeg, and does it very quickly. (I don't normally recommend conversion apps as they're usually really slow.)
If either vob or mpeg will play better then I really would recommend giving it a try.

That is yxflash and an old version at that a newer one is available in market works a treat for all i throw at it

Considering time wasted converting files and saving space, when viewing movies, better idea is to stick with divx/xvid/h.264?

There's nothing that currently plays MKVs properly in all I've tried incl. the aforementioned apps. The RockPlayerBase cannot play H.264 vids. It will however play XviD/DivX totally fine upto VGA resolution (plays upto 1.2Mbps VGA vids fine that I've tested).
Act 1 player, Meridian, the stock player - all play H.264 vids perfectly. HD 720p vids at that, and in some vids, upto 10Mbps plays well. But they don't play AVIs or MKVs.

Then you're getting different results to me there. It doesn't play WVGA with the 4 vids I've tried, all low bitrate DivX. Greater than 480p XviD/DivX, it doesn't play without severe problems. The ~1.5Mbps vids you're referencing are DivX/XviD?
There's format and container. Containers can hold many different format vids. AVI and MKV are just containers.
Do you realize that most MKVs are in the H.264 format which it doesn't play?
And that it plays XviD/DivX format AVIs? Not MSMP4 or MP4 AVIs.
As for H.264: I use Act 1 player... after using it, it's not possible to go back to the stock player

can play 720p High 3.1 MKV+DTS file flawlessly.
Desire use same AP, i think that desire can play 720p MKV.

I've tried this too,on numerous occasions but with no success :/
I also use RockPlayer But what i do i convert all my Movies (that i watch on my Desire) with Badaboom (Nvidia's official vid converter) to a h264 file in mp4 format,and it plays perfectly [so if u have a nvidia gfx card...i strongly recommend this method,since it's ultra fast ,if u have an Ati,try xvid4psp 5.0+ converter]

I, too, recommend MoboPlayer. It's simple to use and supports embedded subtitles in .mkv files.

I can confirm this. All solutions above, (rockplayer, mobo etc.) are crap in comparision to diceplayer, (that if you patch your existing lib as suggested).
I previously postet a thread on this in the general section. It really makes the phone to a "almost" perfect hd media player.

Playing Divx/Xvid and Mkvs on Tmo Tab

I can barely play any codecs on my tmobile tab. Is it suppose to play Divx or xvid out the box? or do different carriers' tabs have different video codecs?
Also is there a stock video player app installed or can you only play out of the Gallery app?
I've already tried rockplayer and vplayer, both have video and audio lag for divx 720i videos.
ANd if other carriers tabs have more codecs can i install thme in my tmo tab?

The Tab plays more video out of the box than any other Android (or Apple) device I've ever used, and I've used most.
Now if you're trying to play videos you've (ahem) gathered from around the net, you will certainly find some that won't play properly. "Found" videos can have a truly phenomenal combination of audio codecs, video codecs, and bitrates, any of which might prevent proper playback.
While you cannot directly add codecs to Android (as yet), there are third party video players that will handle just about anything.
Rockplayer is one of these third party players. While it will play nearly anything thrown at it, it's not hardware accelerated (doesn't use the GPU) so it is largely limited to lower bitrate, standard definition videos.

if you actually read all that I posted you will see that i have tried RockPlayer.
And trust me I know enough about video codec, bitrates, and depths (Visual Effects/Graphics Artist) to tell you that I'm trying basic Divx and Xvid codec at a decent to low Bitrate and they are not working on Stock Video player and will not run smooth enough on rockplayer do to lack of graphic acceleration.
ALso, No the Samsung tab is not the Leader of COdec in the ANdroid Tablet market. The ARchos tablets (70,101 etc) lead in stock codecs by far (I own both a samsung tab and a 101).

The only codec that is accelerated is h.264 in any container. So, mp4 and mkv work fine even at 1080p resolution.
If you encode your movies in h.264 and set Rockplayer to use hardware decoding mode down low in the settings, you'll have no problem viewing it.

It's true that the Archos can play a lot of video formats, but I don't put it in the same category as other top Android devices because it's so lacking in other areas.
Sorry I just perused your previous post, but I've truly had very few problems in playing video on the Tab, even with "found" videos.
In fully reading your post, my question to you would be, Why Divx? If you're encoding video specifically for use on the Tab, why not encode to h264?

I have the Sprint SGT, and I have zero problems with 720 mkv and avi files, regardless of who encoded them. The stock player renders them as smooth as silk. It also has a 5.1 mobile mode for AC3 audio tracks. And the control lock means I can wipe fingerprints off the screen off with my shirt without disturbing playback. My only complaint with the player is the lack of a skip button.
I have read other complaints from other SGT users about poor or stuttery playback, and I'm quite baffled. The only file that would play were 720p mov files. Other than that, I've had zero problems.
Rockplayer was awesome on the Evo, but its useless for me on the SGT. Its now useless for me on the Evo, but thats because I don't even bother watching videos on the Evo anymore.
Wait... I did encounter one problem. I downloaded the newest version of mkvmerge to split mkv files into <2GB parts, and those files will not play on the SGT. But I mostly watch TV and those files top out at 1.5 GB. But xvid avi is no problem. Dunno about divx for sure, I never really use it.

Im using Divx and Xvid because those are the native file formats I'm downloading from a sever/email at work on to my SGT on the go. If I could I would convert to mp4 or h264. Is there a android video converter app that can do did?

ALso I never said Archos are on the top on android Tablet List, I was pointing out that they have Much more codecs out the box "Leaders in Codecs out-the-box"
Lastly Rockplayer is studding on me, giving me about 20-25fps when my video files are 30fps. Also audio sometimes lags on Divx and mkv files.
What is the latest version Rockplayer app out there or is there a better video app for SGT??

Very interesting. I do have the Sprint Tab, perhaps that's why it plays almost everything I throw at it.
I'd never considered that different versions of the Tab would have such a major difference in codec support. I'd figured Samsung was responsible for paying the licensing fees for the various included codecs. Looking at the reality of these significant codec differences, it makes me wonder if the codec licensing fees aren't instead forced on the carriers themselves. That's the only reason I can fathom to explain the codec differences.
The Sprint ROM's are online here. My guess is that you could certainly pull the necessary files out of the Sprint rom and run them on your device. That said, I've absolutely no idea how the codecs are packaged and which files and libraries you'd need.

my tmo tab being a gsm device might not play nice with a sprint rom. And I have no idea how to take apart a rom or how to add codec to mine tab.
Anyone have any other options?

So far my tab has played all my video files with out a problem, (mostly .mkv animes) i have to use mkv sub extactor (from the market) to get subtitles to work. Rockplayer would go out of sync after 5mins of 720p .mkv

RockPlayer can play h.264 720p MKV videos using hardware acceleration as long as they don't have DTS audio (as many do when they are real BluRay rips). If you play TV rips they generally work since they are not using DTS. Dolby audio might work in HW mode as well, I am not sure.
You can play DTS audio though, but only in software mode . But the processor in the SGT cannot keep up with both DTS and h.264 in 720p. I think it might manage 480p with DTS though.

From what I've read, most incompatibilities between GSM and CDMA versions of the Tab have to do with communications related apps, limitations that should have no impact on the video app.
I would think it's extremely likely that the Sprint video app and/or codecs would run flawlessly on other versions of the Tab. Ripping apps from ROM's and deodexing them is not my forte, but there are many in the developer forums who are very experienced in that sort of thing.

I use mVideoPlayer. It plays everything I throw at it.

Probably because it's a 1080p H264 file and you're trying to play it on a device with a 1Ghz processor, and no hardware acceleration for video playback. It can't cope.

If you read the app detail for mVideoPlayer, it only play videos/codecs your phone/tablet can already play. It doesn't add anything or help at all. It's just a skin that takes up app space.
