I am a noob to this phone, but not a noob at rooting things. My question is I go through these forums and see .apk things that are awesome. I will not install if it requires root, but can I screw things up by installing an .apk that needs root on a non rooted phone. I understand it won't work, but will I mess my phone up.
I ask these questions because back in the ol day with the G1 rooting was pretty new thing (easier), but with all these android running phones and more work to root the last thing I want to do is screw my phone up installing some of these .apks.
I appreciate all your help. If this has been covered before please guide me to a link.
no they will do nothing
If y are not a noob at "rooting things" how can u not know that it wont do anything. Its just an app like any other. It just wont function without root access. Don't be afraid to ask if u are a complete noob, we have ALL been there.

Haha.. Thanks boys for the reply. As for the noobieness, yeah you could say that, but when I started rooting my G1 things weren't this far advanced. I haven't ventured into rooting this cause I am scared and I will think it about it more once (if ever we get Froyo.)
Thanks again.
Well glad that's outta the way. This phone has files to recover it fully and nothing short of flashing something in the "phone" portion of Odin cab actually brick this phone and that can now be fixed sans SMS messages. Either way, read up, dive in, enjoy.

You might need to flash with the 2.3.15 sbf first. I was rooted and themed and the update kept failing. After the sbf, I had no issues with the update.

First time poster and extremely unknowledgeable about how to do almost anything except rely on the technical prowess and patience of the developers and other contributors here. That being said, I too have a rooted droid x (using z4root) and cannot get the ota update to work. I tried unrooting using z4root and downloading + installing only to have it fail.
If someone could please post a link or an explanation (in very simple terms, please), how to both obtain and install whatever this sbf is mentioned above, I would appreciate it quite a bit.
Thanks in advance.
DC
PS: I only use and/or have access to a Mac running OSX 10.6.5 so, windows is not available.

Heres a link I found that may help some of us but, as I've changed the bloatware after rooting, I'm intimidated by the warnings contained on the post.
Please use this at your own risk and understand I have nothing whatsoever to do with the posts contents.
I'm just going to wait untilsome kind and patient soul takes pity on me and explains what to do in plain english with no acronyms.
Here's the link:

When you ask for help I would advise for you to at least type in complete sentences so someone can try to understand what it is you're saying. I find it extremely annoying when people ask for help, but their questions are not clear or concise; just a bunch of sentence fragments.
As for everyone else I was having trouble early and just SBF'd. It was the only way for me. Running 2.3.15.
Is this 2.3 gingerbread?

make sure you don't sbf to something lower then your current version i.e. 2.3.32 > 2.3.15 is a no go. (results in brick i think) also make sure your bootloader is the right version and etc. etc.
Does a stock rom image for the continuum exist that can be flashed with Odin and not CWM? I dont think my phone is bricked cause I can get into the download and recovery screens. I just cant do anything from the recovery screen its stuck.
Im either gonna fix this or smash this phone to pieces. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Lol, chill... I'll go on my computer now and share the link with you xP

Ok so I might not smash it but boy is this frustrating.
Thanks for your help lol =)))
Ive done some extensive searching and I havent found a single stock continuum rom for odin anywhere. So if you could create one or point me in the direction of where I could download one I would appreciate that.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=967165
Check that out.... Flash with Odin.. Then find (in the Continuum Android Development section) the DL17 update zip, and put that on your sdcard (named update.zip)...
Then you should be good to go...
However, i highly suggest you getting CWM working... Recovering is a lot easier with it... If you are having difficulty go log onto the IRC (http://webchat.freenode.net/) with the #Samsung-Continuum and i will help you out
You are my effin hero... All I needed was the kernel and it fired right up. Ill be keeping these files close cause Im sure Ill need them again.
Thank you!!!!
Justin
Lmao, no problem man.. haha.. Thank imnuts too for all of his development
BTW: If you stop by the IRC i will help you get cwm up and working.. Then you can flash themes, make backups, and flash my awesome Softkey Modifications
Any idea why I cant access data? Im on the phone with verizon but still no luck..
Also cant access the sd card from my pc and wifi on the phone will not connect..
Verizon is stumped they told me to take it back to the store for a replacement..
What a long day lol =)
Also voice service works I can make calls and send/receive text messages just no data. No 3g indicator.
Nevermind I got it figured out.. Everything is running normally with the DL17 clean rom.
Thanks again

Lol, with Nandroid backup, it makes a compleeeete backup of everything.... Which means it backs up your email logins, facebook logins, GOOGLE logins, everything... Which means they could buy apps on the market using your account..... Not good, lol..

Thanks to Txwolf for posting that tutorial on what to do for a noob like me. Sorry I didn't find it earlier. I will diffidently be staying away from Rom toolbox and this time I am going to flash CWM and do a nandroid back up.

Yeah I know, I am back up though and I don't plan on rooting again it caused too many problems with this phone and I dont want to have to go through it again. I am kind of glad this happened though because now the phone seems to be running faster than it used to.
