Backup Desire, every bit of it?

Excuse me if this has been covered before, but is there a way to backup the device in a way, that if i root it, and then flash some ROM to it, and i mess up or just want to go back to my previous state?
I read something about nandroid? But in order for me to do that, i need root. Correct? so, what if i want to "unroot" my device? and is nandroid suitable for the Desire?

What does nandroid actually do? Does it back up everything?

nandroid makes images of all of the disk, so it's a full backup, but it's having issues restoring those backups to the Desire at the moment. And yes, you'll need to at least get to the recovery menu to run nandroid for now.
The only other route of which I know is just backing up apps and data, and you can use Titanium Backup for that (or MyBackup, I think). Without root, when you restore the apps, you won't be able to tell the Market you have these things installed, though. Doing that still requires you to fully reflash and do some setup, though. I don't think there's a cut-and-dry backup and full restore method at the moment. If there is, I'd certainly be interested...

I am also in the hunt for a good backup application. Dont mind paying as long as work as it should. But i dont think there is any backup application that can backup applications (most of them maybe just supported some limited apps).

Titanium Backup will back up everything that's on your phone except for apps installed by the system (and those it'll try and backup if you're rooted). It's worked flawlessly for me.

I am trying Titanium now at the moment....just wondering I have seen a lot of application backup options/lists?? but where is the options to backup SMS, contacts, etc?? I find the UI is a little complex.

So is the best way of doing it.. Backup.. Copy folder to pc...
Then when i wanna restore.. Install titanium. copy license and folder back?

Titanium backup only does apps.
Personally I use MyBackup, it backs up settings, sms, calender, home screens, settings e.t.c. as well as apps and keeps market links intact.
Well worth the money.

Ive got both now lol! have to wait till i install a new rom.. ill try mybackup first then

I just moved from one ROM to another smoothly with Titanium. I recommend it.

How to Backup you Desire before rooting it ?
Titanium requires Rooted phone ......
other Appli ?

You can try Sprite Backup but no application will work that well without root, sorry.

Is anybody test Sprite Backup?
I think MyBackup Pro and Titanium are similar when you have the system app active.

barring rooting the device and doing a nand backup/restore, I have used Sprite Backup in the past on my diamond (XDAndroid) successfully and it u could also use the application backup/restore with Astro (from the marketplace) and for txt msgs use sms backup -

Titanium Backup or Backup & Restore via google?

I just want to get an idea of what the general consensus is and what people use. I've heard some stories that if you use the Backup & Restore that you can enable/disable from within privacy settings that there might be some problems with the rom you're using acting up weird and stuff. Granted, it doesnt restore all your preferences and settings but it's not the end of the world for me to setup a few things by myself, and it automatically downloads the latest versions of the apps where as titanium backup restores the version you had installed?
What do you use, have used? Any experiences?

I use AppMonster Pro... Backs up in the background as soon as any app is updated or installed. Plus it gives you the option to backup market links or the APK's... Great app.

Best way to restore Data/Apps?

With the many different GB roms coming out, I find myself wanting to try them all. The only thing holding me back is the setup time after I install a ROM. I use to use Titanium Backup to restore all my apps/data/home screens, and it worked great......except for something was causing the endless sync icon because it was restoring some old system files.
My question is this: What does everyone use to restore as much of their data/apps as possible? I know I can continue to use Titanium, just for restoring apps, but I wanted to try to see if there was any better solution out there.

You could try mybackup pro. It will restore pretty much everything for you

With Titanium only choose the option to restore "Applications and Data" Do NOT choose System files. Trust me, I know personally the sync icon. You can find my adventures here:

I almost started a new topic until I saw this. I'm on liberty 2.0.1 (donated), and I'm waiting for an official gingerbread release. anyway, I always use bootstrap clockwork mod to make a backup and then TB pro for app + app data backup / restore.
that always works great and my flashes to other ROMS would be smooth EXCEPT, when I flash I no longer have TB pro. I need to re-download it from the market. no problem - except I have like 100 apps and I can't say "hey just download TB pro". so, I gotta wait like 15 minutes for market to quit downloading **** before I can use TB to restore right over it.. sorta redundant and really slow. any suggestions?

I'll say this again, the application mybackup pro will do all the data and apps that you need. And you do not have to sit there and install them all. It will just do it

Well paid tb does it all for you to and imo works awsome although I havent tried mybackup... Jmoney does it do that for you on free version if so that would def be lookin into for someone who hasnt purchased tb

i dont think you understand my q:
it seems that the mybackup pro does the same thing as TB pro. I don't have to manually do each one. I paid for pro so it can do a batch restore without my intervention. either way though, after you flash roms, you need to re-download mybackup pro or TB pro before you can restore you backups. but when you have 100+ apps trying to download at the same time, it takes 20 minutes to get your mybackup pro or TB pro. then you have to reinstall your backups over the fresh installs thatt the market just did.
its extremely annoying. if I don't sync with my Google account the market doesn't go all nuts, but then I can't download TB pro or mybackup...

I guess you could uncheck the option under Settings/Privacy "Back up my data". That way the market won't go nuts with all the re-installs and you can just install TB and do your restore.

How about this:
Using root explorer, go to data/app/ whatever it is saved as, you'll see the icon, and copy it to somewhere on your sd card. Then, all you have to do is use the file manager that is on every rom to navigate to it and install it. That way, you don't have to use the market

[Q] Keeping apps when trying out ROMs?

I've been trying out a few ROMs, and have had problems retaining or restoring apps when moving to a new ROM or restoring an old one. I'm using ROM Manager Premium, and MyBackup Pro to backup/restore my apps.
The problems I've had are:
1. Moved from Virtuous G-Lite to MIUI, using ROM Manager to download and install MIUI, and selected the option to backup my existing ROM. Before doing so I also backed up all my apps and data using MyBackup Pro. When I installed MIUI and tried to restore my apps using MyBackup Pro most of the apps failed to restore, saying something like "no market data found" for each app.
2. Restored Virtuous G-Lite from recovery mode, using the backup taken above. Many of the apps were not correctly restored - their app icons were set to the Android Market icon, and when I tried to run them I got "could not launch the requested activity". These were typically non-core apps that I'd downloaded from the market.
When restoring apps using MyBackup Pro I've selected the option to restore apps only (not data), as I'd previously had problems with apps force closing if I restored apps and data.
Can anyone recommend a tried and tested way of restoring apps cleanly after switching ROMs?

Titanium backup is the best app of all. Also when you switched roms, did you do a full wipe on your phone? Because usually backup apps sometimes stores the backups on the phone data so when you wiped the phone is lost all data. Hope this helps

try backing up with titanium backup. its be the best out there.

this is because you wiped your data from ROM manager and not from recovery
best thing to do when youre going to switch to a new ROM is to back up your apps (using either titanium backup or my backup) and then reboot into recovery and from there you factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and battery stats THEN u flash the new ROM
some either use the g2superwipe, or something like that
but doing it this way is the best so you dont have to mess with half ass wipes that cause trouble when u want to restore your apps

Market doctor
That should fix broken market links
Also don't backup with Google if using tb
Under home
Settings
Privacy
Auto restore
Edit... Be advised that wiping battery stats just be done properly. Do your homework before you wipe battery stats

I used MIUI and it's My Backup feature but it wasn't as awesome as Titanium Backup. Titanium Backup backs up your app and its associated data. Then when you restore all your apps/data it links everything back to the market so you can receive updates through the market. ROM Manager and Titanium Backup are two must haves for any user who has rooted their Android device and is playing with ROMs.

The apps that wouldn't restore for me with the whole market link thing were "blackmarket" apps. With those making sure you have saved the apk on your cpu or something seems important. I have titanium pro and mybackup pro.

Same here. PRO key is worth the few $$.

And yet another vote for Titanium Backup--the pro key is worth the money, and I've personally found the app a lifesaver during "rom experimentation"

yeah, but the pro version, because with the free one you have to re-install all your apps manually. It takes time when you have 100+ apps

What do you do before changing roms to ease the migration

Well here's what I do...
Go through my individual apps and if there's a "backup" setting I create those (including SMS backup).
Run titanium backup of all apps.
Take screen shots of my home screens (to remember icon/ widget placement).
Any other ideas to help ease the migration?

You can get a custom launcher and save all your settings and placements...I use nova launcher

I use nova as well. Still has the stock feel with all the customizations and the backup and restore feature is very nice, especially if you're a flashaholic.

titanium backup for apps
mybackup pro (you'll need to crack it if you want to do restores between CM and MIUI) - because it does MMS unlikes SMS restore & backup.
and a recovery backup ..

I use My Backup Pro to backup app+data, homescreen with shortcuts/widgets, settings, call logs, SMS, contacts (Though I prefer to sync with google contacts),

Can't believe nobody listed nandroid 1st. My apps are backed up by schedule, don't need to do that. 1st I back up SMS, then use a wipe-all script in recovery to speed things up. After flashing on reboot, I have a TB .apk on the SD ready so I can pop that on quick without hitting the play store. I created a label of all the apps I want to restore so I don't waste time choosing apps one by one, and then BAM...! One button restore. Restore SMS, reboot, profit!

Since I change ROMs often as I change shirts , all I do is nandroid if it's a real good ROM; other than that I start from scratch and install apps as I need them.

Ok, wait woah. I feel stupid. Now, I've been flashing roms since back when Oxygen GB was all the rage, but I never realized I could use Titanium Backup&Restore, to backup and restore all of my apps! Derp. So how do I go about restoring them?

I use this method from the AOKP FAQ:
5. Best way to restore apps with Titanium Back up?
Open TiBu.
Menu/ Preferences/ App processing mode/ AUTO Direct
Create backup (Menu/ Batch/ backup/ Click the gray Run button: Backup all user apps) Do not backup or restore system data
Choose Pause active apps/ Run the batch operation
Back/ Menu/ More/ Create "update.zip."
Under "Titanium backup will be install as: "choose “System application”
Move update.zip to root of the sdcard
Flash the ROM, GApps and BEFORE rebooting,mount /system
Choose install zip, and select the zip you created
Reboot
Skip the initial device setup screen Tap top-left, top-right, bottom-right, and bottom-left corners in that order
Launch TiBu and do Menu/ Batch/ Restore all user apps plus data
Reboot
Settings/ Accounts and Sync/ Add your Google account

Using this method I usually just restore essential apps and other apps only when I'm sure I'm going to be staying on the new ROM for awhile.

And just for save backup all my new photos/videos/wallpapers to PC. That should be enough.

Came across Go Backup and it can backup everything like SMS , MMS , contacts, call logs, stock launcher settings and Apps with data as well.
Importantly, you can restore all at once without clicking on install button for every app

Nor really. Since the phone as memory enough to save all SMS. Beside that sometimes for me already helped to find some SMS with the date that someone told me something and with that I just search for it and turn my point right.
