Home Button Lag - Galaxy S II General

This is driving me crazy...
If I am in any app and press the home button it takes at least 3 seconds to go back to the home screen.
It can be fixed with a restart but it starts happening again?!?!

something is wrong with your phone. Factory reset it and see if it still lag.

Tested and no lag takes about 1 second .
jje

I was having this problem as well. A restart fixed it though. But the restart reset all the configurations I had made to the app draw. The folders were okay, but there were no icons in any folder. I will post if it comes back again.

i had the exact same problem yesterday too - a reboot fixed it too.
will also post if it happens again ...

+1 less than a second. Have no problems our lags whatsoever.
Are you using Touchwiz? or using done 3rd party launcher?
I suggest you first format sd then go into recovery mode (press home button + vol up + power button together until reboot) and clear cache and factory reset <<- this is what I did from the moment if purchase!!

I had lag too when trying to return to home screen by pressing the home button. I reboot my phone and the lag is reduced by not entirely gone...still takes approx 1 second for it to change.
But after I reboot my phone, I noticed the TW App drawer is messed up. I had a "Games" folder created before...but that folder got filled with other apps instead after reboot.

This is due to the double click feature of the home button. Since a double click launches voice control mode the phone needs to wait and check whether there's a second click. Rather annoying IMO.

Ah thanx !
That definitely makes a lot of sense, since I noticed hitting back button to go to the homescreen is much faster (but of course doesn't always work). I was pretty sure the delay was intentional but couldn't find a reason why they would do that.
I hope the delay can be removed later on for people like me who never use voice input.

Does disabling VoiceInput solve this issue for anyone?
IIRC is there an option in the settings...

Upz!
Guys.. ya still having problems on this one? I just got my phone last week and I must say the lag is horrible as compared to SGS1. Even the power button takes time to wake up the device. 1 sec is kinda actually if you compare it with other phones...
Was hoping if someone has found a solution..

I just checked my phone without these problems, you may do a factory reset and try it again

In my opinion the suggestion about the bundled Voice Talk app from Vlingo over here makes sense:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13905528&postcount=8
I did try to eliminate this by freezing Voice Talk in Titanium and rebooting, but did not see a fix in behaviour. Had tried LauncherPro for sometime but saw the same behaviour. Maybe will post this in one of the ROM threads.

Could you post your firmware? Thanks.

It's either the voice command, screenshot, or a combination of both causing this. I would assume there's a delay so that it can detect a second home press to activate voice command, or a delay to see if the power button is pressed to take a screenshot.
And yes I find it extremely annoying and hope someone can find a fix =(

If its to do with the voice talk double tap you can disable this in the settings. Disabled it on my phone and it seems ok but need to test it out properly. I'm running KF2 by the way.

I've found that whenever i install a lockscreen replacement the phones exhibits home button lag. But when i return to stock lockscreen, the lag is gone, and the home button works just fine.

Anyone else having problems with there menu button?

Lately my menu button has not been registering when i touch it. i have to touch it several times to get it to register. Also some times it brings up the search option.
Either this just started today or i just started to notice it. Its annoying.
Is anyone else having this problem?
Yes the Home button has quit working unless it is pressed a dozen times or so. Any fix???
My home is getting harder to use... Yes there is a fix and it sucks, exchange it.
No problems here. Picked up the phone on launch day and my buttons are working the same as they were out of the box.
My phone did the same, the home button stopped working had to click it multiple times for it to register.just exchange the phone. My new one had been great, every button registers on the first click

All I noticed is if the bottom buttons are off I have to touch them once to turn them on, then after they are on they register the first time.

The only time my buttons don't register is when the phone is doing something else at the same time (and that's very rare). It feels kind of like when my computer is doing a backup and it slows everything else down.
Can anyone confirm that these button issues happen when nothing else is running in the background?

Yes I can. I can take my phone in an awake but not busy and apply the same pressure to each key... All buttons except the home key vibrate and cause an action to occur. The home key I have to push much harder.
I noticed the home button lagging or you have to press it harder when running the Samsung widget Buddies now. If you have that widget running, delete it and the home works like a champ again.
I actually find the widget helpful for a favorites contacts so I'll continue to run it and just press home a little harder.
Here we go... video taken with a Vibrant of a vibrant showing the home button issue. When I hold the phone the problem is not as bad as the vid makes out. Vid makes it look like the button never works. It does but it takes some effort.
One thing to note. Home button action on home screen should bring up preview of all home screens.
Don't forget to watch in stunning 720p
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erCVddGkHLE
Well the home buton issue started with me just now. Worked fine until then on my unrooted, non screen protected vibrant. Other soft keys work fine, but all the sudden home is not working half the time.
Just wanted to let other know that its not an out of the box issue but a developing problem.
Update: after ranting about the issue and showing several people my broken phone, I enabled the GPS and the issue disappeared while trying to show another person my issue. I disabled the GPS and the issue is still not present. SO I don't know if its was just coincidence but maybe its just a software bug. Keep in mind that a power cycle of the handset did not affect the home key working.
Thanks for everyone that posted. Looks like the majority is having issues w the home button. My Home button is working totally fine.
Anyway, my menu button started working again for a while, but its back to being buggy.
It seems to me to be a software issue.
What a pain, i already done a ton of customizations. I'm going to see what happens over the weekend. If the problem continues, i guess i'll unroot it and return it.
My home button works perfectly fine... but the search button doesn't work 1/2 the time @[email protected] I hope it's a software problem >.>; don't feel like going to the store to exchange
*edit* Okay I really think it's a software problem now because when the backlight is on for the search button, it would not respond 1/2 of the time. When the backlight is off, the search button works perfectly fine. I hope they fix this ^^;
When I first got the phone I had issues with the menu button. I had to use the whole pad of my thumb instead of the tip of my finger like the other buttons. The second day I had the phone it all worked fine and had continued to work. Definitely seems like software issue to me.

I concur about it being software related. I have the home button problem, and when it isn't working right (comes and goes), it always seems to have different quirks, including the one where it doesn't respond while the light is on and does as soon as it turns off. One thing is for sure...it's ruining my otherwise almost perfect experience with this phone. --and it worries me, because if it's software, getting it replaced isn't going to solve the problem. --and if I wait until the problem is discovered and fixed, I'll be past the return period for the phone, I'm afraid. I think all the people returning the phones are not addressing the real problem, and it may delay the process of finding a real fix. Does anyone know if Samsung is aware of this issue and have addressed it like they have for the gps? If not, how does one clue them in?

I think its a ground issue. Put phone down and search is hard to get to respond, pick it up works everytime....
Also have you a link to samsungs statement on GPS?

I sure hope it isnt a ground issue. That would be hard to fix with software. I am afraid you are right though as my issue came back.
I'm not so sure about a ground issue. No problem whatsoever for 5 days in any situation, and then it hardly works in any situation? Seems like software. And no, sorry I don't have a link to Samsung re: gps. I just know I've seen a couple times in a few places that they have acknowledged the issue and are working on a fix.

I have the same problem, sometimes, the button is not responsive. There should be a solution for it. Someone has to report to htc.
I have the same problem, i think that it is caused by either to many running applications or by a application that hangs.
for the most i just have to wait a minute or two and then it works again.
Last time i connected the charger, it also worked and i have also tried to call the phone from another phone. it also worked.

yes... I think it's because of many programs... I have this when I'm doing something and I push the button fast to turn of the screen and suddenly remember I forgot something and push it again to turn on... I think It's normal!!
sometimes it's anything but normal, but i found a soft reset (or hard reset for that matter) often is the solution. So it's most likely an application or process that hangs, leaving it for a few minutes and then trying to unlock it usually does the trick

[Q] Anyone having freezing issues on the lock screen?

My device constantly freezes when I try to unlock it. The lock screen comes up when I push the power button and it's randomly completely non-responsive. I will lock the screen again with the power button and repeat the process and it will then work.
Anyone else having this problem on their Nexus 4?
I've tried disabling lock screen widgets with no help. All I am left to wonder is whether it's from an application I've installed.
If I want to completely reset the phone and remove any fragments of old applications, is doing a factory reset enough to get this done?

I spoke too soon. My phone just locked up while in a deep sleep overnight. I had to Power + vol down to restart it.
+1 . Mine generally freezes overnight. When I got to unlock my nexus 4 to check the time I find the phone frozen on the lock screen then the phone reboots itself. I did a factory restore, did a factory re-flash, and nothing seems to help. Today I shut off google now to see if that was the issue. Reading through various threads it seems the problem is widespread and across multiple nexus devices including the nexus 7 and galaxy nexus. This gives me some faith that the phone itself maybe fine. Google please fix ASAP. I need my alarm in the morning, not a frozen phone. :crying:
---------- Post added at 12:21 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:15 PM ----------
Just to add, I did a bug report and called tech support. Nothing I mentioned seemed like news to my tech nor did he have any recommendation other then to RMA. I told him I would give the phone another week to see if anything improves its stability. I still have my Gnex as a backup. I have not noticed any issues with 4.2 on my Gnex but then again it's been in my backpack since my nexus 4 arrived. Perhaps I will leave my Gnex on as we'll to see if I run into any issues with it.
Lock screen freezes once or twice every day, the fix is easy, just press the sleep button again, but its still annoying. 4.2 has pretty bad quality control.
i had the same issue on my old N4. Especially when i got incoming call, lock screen freezes all the time
I will get replacement tho..

I had the same issue. Seemed to be related coming out of the lockscreen after having done some BT music playback. Anyway, I had this "lockscreen widget disable" app installed. Removed it again, and now I have not had any lockups in the last 3 days.
I'm glad to know I'm not alone here. I did a full reset and I still have the problem. I get a lock 4-5 times a day.
I do use bluetooth and google music...
Knowing other people are having this issue really makes me think it's software and not hardware.
i notice that when mine freezes on the lock screen, [i use a pattern], that pressing the power button to turn the screen off then back on solves the problem.

This is the only disappointment for me, having to press the power button a few times in order to unlock this damn phone.
Power to turn screen on, frozen touch, power to turn screen off, power to turn it on again and the it registered touch.
I am surprise not many have this problem.
A friend of mine ordered at the same time as I did, and does not have this problem.
Feels so stupid having to turn the screen on and off a couple of times to get into the homescreen.
Especially when friends asked to play with the phone and the damn thing wont unlock, and I have to explain to them the process of unlocking the phone.
I want to rma, but shoot, might not get a replacement till next year.

RMA won't help a software defect, which it is 100%, it's freaking annoying and makes me think google literally makes the phones and never uses it to see if it has any bugs.

I think I've had it happen 2 or 3 times so far. I don't think it's hardware related, it seems to be software to me.
I figured out the first time it happened, if I grab and slide up to launch Google Now, it lets me unlock it. So it definitely isn't hardware, as it is registering touches.

If it is trutly a physical defect with the home button your best but most annoying option is to take back the phone and have it changed with a new one.
Another thing to do is to do a factory reset (just in case there is a software bug causing the button to act this way)

I have the same problem with my phone. Runing stock ROM.
The home button will trigger the task manager upon waking up the phone. This is driving me absolutly crazy. I hate lock screens and passwords just to get to the home screen.
Once the home screen is up this behavior stops.
I just tested the time it takes to hold the home button and launch the task manager alongside with my old Galaxy S2 and the latter needs a longer hold on the button.
The home button is not sticky, it has a normal feel and click.
Please help
Actually my problem i not at the waking up of the phone but in the home screen or in any app.

I'm having this same issue. When I'm at the home screen it doesn't "stick", but only when I'm in an application. What's up with this behavior? It's a recent development. Could this be a software issue? I have a Verizon S4 and it hasn't had a software update at all yet.
Any solutions, or maybe there's an app we all have that is causing this?
UPDATE
I've made this happen on the home screen, usually by pressing near the middle of the home button, however this only starts happening after the phone has been on for a while. I'm so confused as to whether this is a hardware or software issue, or maybe a combination of both.

The home button problem was gone for a while, but a week ago, it came back and I decided to call T-Mobile. They immediately said it was a software issue and recommended me to do a factory reset. So I did and it seems to be working perfect now, haven't had the home button sticking or giving any problems for about a week now.you should definitely give that a try.hope it helps.
hey guys.
I switched some ROMs after that and it solved the problem. I can only assume it is a software bug.

Hope you will all solve it as i did.

This driving me mad..power button

I have to press it 2-3 times before the phone powers on. It doesn't happen all the time. it's very intermittent, but it does happen. After doing a factory reset, the button still performs the same. This just stated happening 2 days ago. I didn't drop it or get it wet. Anyone else experiencing this or do I have a faulty power button? I also get a delay when using the home button to turn on the phone. The home button issue might be due to the SD card though. Really love this phone, but this issue is frustrating!
You have to press and hold the power button for a few seconds to turn the phone on from cold.
The home button is probably because of S Voice which is set to activate with a double click of it, so it'll wait to see if you click it twice before going to the home screen, you can disable this in S Voice's settings.

You might not be pressing the button deep enough. If pressed properly, it should go to sleep with just one press. Long press will pop up the shutdown/restart menu. If turned off, long press of 2 sec will power on the phone.

Yes, I'm having this problem and I think others are too. I've had 10-30 second wake up lags at times (I have one of them recorded for proof). I got a replacement phone yesterday and while I didn't use it long enough to experience all of the lags, it had a pretty constant 2 second wake up lag. I'm now using SoftLocker to prevent the phone from going into deep sleep and that's minimizing the lag.
