Hi,
I'm working on THE ideal freeware sms-application for XDA... I do have much ideas that I want to realise in my SMS-application (scheduled sms, using the interface of a Nokia - Sony-Ericsson, sending messages with your thumb,...)
Now I need to know YOUR :!: suggestions and YOUR :!: wanted features, YOUR :!: wishlist for the ideal SMS-application!
Thanks for telling me what YOU need or want to have...
Sam
I would like to have an SMS application with the possibility to write with one hand in the standard GSM mode with big keypad (like it is in D9 software).
For me the best thing should be to integrate in D9 (after you find the contact with one hand and select the SMS button) an SMS client with the same keypad like the one for finding contacts (always in D9) which has big numbers with letters (that I can tap them with the fingers to write the message).
Instead of the green button it should have the send one and instead of the two big buttons (contact list and options) it should have the place for the written text.
I think it is the easiest way to write SMS when you walk or have just one hand free.
I hope that you are really going to do something like this.
Thanks,
Urosh
Here's my list of desired features:
Support for international numbers with '+' prefix
Ability to send a text message to all contacts that belong to a chosen category
Texting using dialpad with predictive text input (T9)
Big QWERTY keyboard so we could quickly type messages without using the stylus (maybe in landscape mode)
spam blocker as in you can type in a phonenr from where you dont wish to recieve sms's from
to fight sms spam
It would be awesome if you found some way of integrating T9 text option in your sms client..... That would make life so easy when using your thumb to type out quick messages.....
Thank you for the effort in trying to create a client like this.... I think a lot of people could benefit from your efforts.... The sms-writer program that's out there right now is cool, but its hard to use..... The buttons are small and there's no T9 option.... so its takes forever to type out a message.....
In case that you want to have T9 text input method it should be an option and not default (for non english users).
Jargon..."Big QWERTY keyboard so we could quickly type messages without using the stylus (maybe in landscape mode)"...
I think that a big qwerty keyboard is a non sense, because you need two hands to use it. If I have two hands to write the SMS I should use the default input method. What do you think about?
Urosh
QWERTY
Yes i would like a big landscape QWERTY keyboard, that is my prefered method, i am not so much for that T9 stuff,
I would like a big (preferably changeable) readble font!!! I tried miserably to change the font size on the default application and failed (
also it should still integrate with the inbox and outbox..or maybe have its own outbox and inbox and folders
the contacts should easily be found with either a D9, phone plus, or finger clix method
just as a though..maybe the work on the application could be split in 2 folds.....one for the client itself...
the second is for the input method (like block recognizer and on screenkeyboard)..we can have akeypad with T9 option (that can also be used in other applications
this way you can improe the functionality of the sms client and focus on that...and give the freedom to use which ever input method the user prefers
but please...bigger font!!!!
Hops,
Echo all those suggestions dude - especially the one-handed input method like D9. Sending SMS's whilst driving is the bain of my existance!
I'd pay good money for this app if it comes to fruition. Good luck.
Codenix.
At last someone is developing key features for SMS. The most important feature to me is being able to send SMS to a pre asinged group of contacts.
If the application meets my expectation, I will be glad to pay for it!
The big QWERTY keyboard is good when you're texting while walking or when you're a passenger on a moving vehicle. It's hard to use the stylus and the built-in small keyboard when you're on the move. Also, texting using a QWERTY keyboard is faster than texting using a dialpad.
Please, find a way to send and receive EMS picture messages (not MMS), like the Nokia phone
EMS does new nokia's even have that ?
it's pretty old and never got all that popular
also maybe the reson behind it never became popular could
be that nokia or ericson or who ever own that std
want royalties when people use it
Hi all,
Thanks already for your response!
What I will add to my aplication:
- Big QWERTY / AZERTY keyboard
- Input like a normal GSM (abc - def) - like D9 (one-handed input method)
- Using your OUTLOOK-contacts
- Creating user-groups
- Adaptable screen-layouts (colors, fonts, font-size,...)
- Basic EMS-support
What I will not add is T9, because T9 is a trademark of T9 http://www.t9.com/ and to expensive to implement it in my freeware application!
The SPAM-blocker is a feature I will try to implement, but I can't promise this...
Some more whishes??
Thanks in advance!
Sam
That's it for me, but please I woul like to find a contact (from outlook contacts data base) also with one hand (like D9 method).
I say it because for example in SMS writer you write the SMS (it is too slow and too little buttons) and then to find the contact you must use the stylus. It is impossible to use the fingers. So, that's not the solution if I must use the stylus.
So, I repeat that the best solution would be to include your SMS client in D9 (I think it is open source) and your client appears when the contact has been just found and you tap the SMS button near the contact number and write the SMS with the same screen of initial d9.
That should be the BEST for me!
Thanks again samvds for your work.
Just another thing
In the default SMS client I have to check the box (I have to go always in the option menu) everytime if I want to ricieve the delivery notification.
Could you make it in one of these ways:
- default option (always send the notification of delivery, which is for me important to know if one have recieved the SMS)
- to select this option every time, but in the same screen (not to go in other option menus)
- have the possibility to select this option or not for all SMS (not for every SMS separately)
Thanks again,
Urosh
my good old siemens SL45 used to understand that it was receiving the delivery reciept..and it would not save it as a message...just to scroll the info on the screen ..which is very nice not to have all those delivery receipts in the inbox!
Another good idea is being able to send preprogrammed sms.
you can program your XDA2 to send a birthday greeting on March 13, 2004 at exactly 12:00 am. Or SMS all of your staff a memo on at a certain time
I think using a QWERTY keypad is a bad idea... I have a Nokia 5510, with a full QWERTY keyboard, and it is such a pain to text. I always have to use two hands... you have to be very dextrous just to use one hand. I think a normal dial keypad with T9 would be the best option.
Thanks,
Matt

or would you know any software where I can actually write chinese in the text message.
Yes you could, with Maction Chinese
It can also display Chinese character in Today plugin, etc etc.. Only thing is, don't have too many false hope on these thing. Like me, I was hoping that it could sync my Contact that's in Chinese character with my Outlook that's in English. All those will becomes "??" mark, damn!!

ActiveSync does not seem to use Unicode as its means of communication. Instead, it uses the default encoding as per Windows' setting. If you have your setting set to English (United States), but have Chinese on your PPC, then it's not going to work.
It is possible to change this setting, but be aware of the consequences before doing so...
1) Open the "Regional & Language Options" dialog: Start->Settings->Control Panel->Regional and Language Options
2) Select the Advanced Tab. Read the details on the screen. Note: Changing this setting can have seriours consequences, as the default encoding of characters is changed. This means that characters other than the first 128 ASCII characters may appear differently in files after this setting is changed. Use with caution Change the setting to the language that you have installed on your Pocket PC. For example, I have "Chinese (Hong Kong S.A.R.). Click OK.
3) Reboot
4) Resync with ActiveSync.
>>> Update Note: The prior post was made with regard to ActiveSync 4.2, and with a WM2003SE ROM. These details may not be correct with regard to WM5 and the latest version of ActiveSync. It seems Windows Mobile 5 has better support for Unicode synchronisation.
I remember hearing about a chinese software called CE Star. Google for it..
There are two main issues here:
1) A Chinese language system that allows display of text in Chinese, along with Chinese input (for which PenPower/CE Star and Monster Chinese are solutions), and
2) The ability to synchronise data between Outlook and the PPC without losing the characters during synchronisation (eg. when inputting "龘龗蘇" as a name on the PC, avoiding it appearing on the PPC as "???").
To solve problem (1), look at PenPower or Monster Chinese. These products install a Chinese font on your system allowing display of Chinese characters, along with one or more SIP (soft input panel) items to allow input of text.
To solve problem (2), refer to my previous post in this thread (up two posts).
Hello everyone. Here's a problem I have with my wing: when I send sms using greek keyboards (interkey keyboard and greek keyboard), the receiving party cannot see the greek characters.
I sent an sms to myself and I couldnt see it either!
this is what i sent:
ςερτυθιοπασδφγηξκλζχψωβνμΣΕΡΤΥΘΙΟΠΑΣΔΦΓΗΞΚΛΖΧΨΩΒΝΜ
this is what i received:
?????????????????????????Σ????Θ??Π?ΣΔΦΓ?Ξ?Λ??ΨΩ???
I'm using open touch biggy by ttran v.5
could someone please help me?
Btw, I'm not experiencing this problem when I end emails or write notes, docx etc. just sms.
its possible that the protocol that tmobile uses to send sms cant recognize greek characters. if this is true, you're pretty much SOL until tmo decides to change the system.
I'd stick to phonetic spellings for now
The GSM standard supports only the upper case Greek characters in what is called a 7 bit alphabet. Unicode characters, which is probably what you are sending are not supported by all SMS carrier gateways. I would look for a keyboard mapper that does map your keyboard to the 7 bit alphabet.
Having said that, I am still looking for one...
I have Any Sofy Keyboard Hebrew installed on my Hero, however almost everything connected to contacts, mainly browsing & searching them - is not working. Only the English contacts are searchable.
Does anyone know how to overcome this problem?
Thanks
Gal
hi
first u can sorcut "People" to your phones desktop
the any soft key works fine there if you use the search
second you can download from the market the "aContact" app
and set it as default app for the Phone button.
dont forget to set the T9 lang to hebrew and check the RTL box
good luck
This sounds bizarre because this is one of many Android devices but the only one I have this problem with... When I send an exchange email via the stock app, whenever I use an apostrophe I get random characters produced in the sent copy of the email. I don't see them when typing it, but when reading the copy after sending on the GT10, EVO, Laptop or my Blackberry I see the characters. It wouldn't bother me so much if I didn't know that anyone who gets my email sees them too. Anyone else have this issue?
And by the way the EVO and my Sammy GT7 don't do this while using the stock android email app on my exchange email.
Yeah I was getting this also, seems to happen when "auto-correction" occurs or when you backspace and replace characters, it seems to inject what almost looks like HTML language for the action performed, I've confirmed this happens when using the "stock" -English (US) Android Keyboard, however when I switched over to using the "samsung keypad" or my FlexT9 keyboard it did not experience the same behavior.
only the stock keyboard in the email app during auto-correction or manual correction appeared to experience this behavior.
I was going to look for another copy of the Android "stock" honeycomb keyboard and see if the problem continued but I haven't had a chance.
For the time being try switching over to one of the other pre-installed keyboards. [such as the Samsung one] and see if you still get strange characters in your sent mail messages.
Just noticed i have this same issue as well. Im using the stock mail app with my exchange acct but im using thumb keyboard and still get the random characters. Very embarrassing sending an email to my boss this am to see random characters included in it. I love thumb keyboard but cant have this happen! Hopefully its an issue in the mail app and Samsung addresses it.
followup
Yeah after looking into this some more I found that it appears to happen on any keyboard with auto correction, I've switch to Swype / T9 and the honeycomb stock keyboard and they all post the same results in emails that are sent.
ex. if you type the work "I'll" however you don't put the " ' " in the word auto correction may insert this character for you.
problem is when it does it places "'" instead of the auto corrected " ' "
so if you miss a ' in I'm you get I'm as a result. it really tears up the outbound emails.
for the time being I've switched to using non-auto corrective keyboards such as the Samsung stock keyboard. and this seems to prevent this condition from reoccurring.
of course this is just a work around to a much larger problem.
anyone else have any insight as to why the auto correction would place "'" in each corrected spot in the email?
