The outrageous price of the Droid Charge ($299 for those of you who haven't been following) will likely extend the life of the Fascinate (in terms of developer and user support), IMHO. Those who haven't either added the Thunderbolt to their arsenal (Adrynalyne, ThatDudeButch, etc.) or jumped ship altogether will likely find the price point for the Droid Charge to be rather prohibitive (again, just my opinion). Is 4G a must-have? The Thunderbolt is $50 cheaper on a 2-year contract. Don’t want to give up your Super AMOLED screen? I recommend waiting for the Galaxy S II (There WILL eventually be a CDMA version for Verizon).
Here's a quick comparison: With the Galaxy S II, you...
...Get the same screen upgrades as the Charge (Super AMOLED Plus, 4.3 inches)
...Add another cpu core, bump both cores up to 1.2 GHz
...Nearly triple your RAM (328MB for the Charge, 1024MB for the S II)
...Upgrade your software to Gingerbread (the Charge comes with Froyo out of the box)
... Last, but not least, upgrade to TouchWiz 4.0 (the Charge has 3.0 - I'm sure you're all here on XDA because you LOVE stock TouchWiz ).
Meanwhile, just enjoy your Fascinate (you probably have to wait a few months before you're upgrade eligible, anyway - the S II will probably be out by then).
Anyone have a different opinion? Does anyone feel compelled to get your Charge on now? (you still have to wait as of May 6 thanks to Verizon's LTE problems pushing back the Charge's release date - sound familiar, Thunderbolt owners?) Do tell...

Getting the charge
well I would agree the charge is hardly an upgrade and I normally would wait untill the galaxy S II comes out BUT as someone who works directly on the sales floor with verizon, I can see the 4g data being either tiered or capped soon(MY PERSONAL OPINION). so to answer your question yes I will happily pay 300 bucks for my droid charge just to ensure I will be able to keep my unlimited plan while on 4g as well and then upgrade to galaxy s II when it comes....just my two cents
Fascinates are free at Best Buy on Fridays & Saturdays (with a 2 year contact, of course...)

You'd be a fool to pay $50 less for a Thunderbolt. $100+ maybe. $50 about covers the spare battery you'll need to carry around all the time if you ever use LTE.
The anti-Charge FUD in this group is pretty sad and fear-driven. You have it totally backwards: the continuing release of Charge ROMs by Samsung guarantees a probably-backportable source of Android updates for the Fascinate. Embrace the Charge.

I really have a dilemma...
I cracked the screen on my fascinate last month... It still works perfectly, but I hate looking at the spiderweb on my screen.
I can put an insurance claim in and for $100 get a new Fascinate... or
Im due for an upgrade... So, I can simply get a free Fascinate now, but that locks me in for 2 years... or
stick with the current (Broken Fascinate) for a few months.
By then, Im hoping there will be other 4G phones to choose from and they wont have capped the plan by then.
Decisions. Decisions.
This is kind of a silly poll, as it leaves out some major releases. The Charge and the Thunderbolt are not the only new Spring phones for Verizon. The Droid X2, the Xperia Play, and the LG Revolution will all be out by the end this month.
I will wait another year for Quad Core phone
It doesn't matter what any of these prices are.
If you wait, you'll find a free deal.
This is why I won't upgraded until the holidays.
(this is how I got two fascinates for myself and my wife, Best Buy's free phone friday's last october)

I'd do the other option you didn't name, just fix the one you got. Changing the screen out isn't that hard and will run you less than a new phone. Ebay has the parts as do other sites.

I bet you could get a "factory refurb" Fascinate for less. Last I saw it was on vzw.com for $39 (with contract, but I can't believe you wouldn't be able to work out a deal on this angle).

I just put my claim in with Assurion. For $100, i get a brand new phone... Being that I got the original for free from Best buy back in Oct, the $100 isnt bad... And, I still have my upgrade.. So, in 3 or 4 months, I'll upgrade to the best 4G phone and give the fascinate to my wife or kid.

The LG Revolution 4G phone is expected to be released May 12, according to www.phonearena.com. I don’t know what Verizon will charge for it, though. If it's $200, it may be worth giving up the AMOLED screen (personally, the AMOLED screen is a must-have for me).
By the way, the Charge is $50 cheaper at Wirefly on contract (if you aren't upgrade eligible and you're looking at paying the unsubsidized price, go to Verizon directly - Wirefly charges $100 extra for off-contract)

Check the Engadget review (and others). Battery life is actually good, even on LTE.
If the Revolution really does come out in a week, and Verizon doesn't kill unlimited by then, it may be a good choice. Thunderbolt isn't unless it's at a big discount.

Yeah... a good choice depending on how much they charge for it... the Revolution got a pretty good review at Phone Arena. It may be the split-the-difference choice - hopefully cheaper than the Charge, longer battery life than the Thunderbolt.

i feel pretty hosed.. i had tmobile... i came to verizon for two reasons... one was that my tmobile service sucked and verizon has way better coverage... secondly is specificly for the droid incredible...
now right when i get my incredible and am locked into my contract (just finished my first 30 days) a new better phone comes out a month later... it may not necessarily be "better".. however i would much prefer the 4.3" screen
$29.99 for Unlimited data plan, plus $20 for wifi tethering which gives you an additional 2 Gigs of data...
So basically what they mean is, you will have unlimited data on your phone, however, if you want to tether you have to pay us $20 a month extra, oh, and by the way... If you're tether, it's not unlimited data, that's just for your phone... but don't worry, we'll only charge you 5 CENTS a megabyte! if you go over... (that equates to $50 a Gigabyte if you go over while wifi tethering)
Yes, it has wifi hotspots for up to 5 devices natively... However, you better hope 5 devices aren't using your phone for wifi... cause you're going to pay for it... and quickly.
Won't they be mad when the moding community roots the phone and enables wifi-tethering without consent...

Yeah, I usually get a new phone every six months. You just get used to paying full price. I always buy them on eBay and can usually save $100 or $200 off the retail price as people that are eligible for upgrades are always getting phones and then selling them on eBay for a profit.

Hmmm, tough decision! The thought occured to trade up to one of the most powerful 4g phones on the At&t network. The Motorolla Atrix.
"The Android 2.2 device is powered by Nvidia’s 1GHz Tegra 2 AP20H dual-core processor (one of the first dual-core phones) and has an impressive 1 GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, a powerful 1930 mAh battery, a 540×960 4-inch multitouch screen with gorilla glass (scratch and shatter resistant), a VGA front-facing camera, a 5MP rear camera that can record 720p video, and a proximity sensor for auto-turn-off."
What do you think?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
I'm very tempted to do so myself. Going dual core is the way now. Of course unless you want to wait for the Qualcom 3xx processors (PS3/360 graphics). The Atrix 4G has caught my attention for sure. I hear it's got some sort of fingerprint scanning tech.
Aren't motorola bootloaders locked down, and have extra extra "no play with", security features.
Desire is the source of all suffering.
its very nice phone. specs are out of this world. however, lock bootloader kills me. one thing going for motorola is that they actually update their phone with updated software. droid x has official froyo after release.
Koush, the dev for clockwork recovery, has released boot strapper to load custom roms. He also have clockwork recovery for the droid x and droid 2. their is some dev support but i believe there is like two custom roms worth flashing. Coming from N1 dev community that is nothing.
Atrix sounds awesome, if you are not really into dev and modds. However, it sounds like if you into modding your phone, it will be a difficult phone to fix up. But its looks so sweet. i will wait and see how the devs and get it after it gets released.
I'm just saving up some money to buy the Atrix outright with hopes that I can trade it for a Bell or Rogers version so that I can keep my $10 unlimited data plan and keep my Nexus One to boot ( I'll need a device to feed my flashing habit plus I just don't see myself ever letting my Nexus One go)

Unless I'm missing something, I don't see the point of buying an AT&T Atrix outright, only with hopes to trade it for a Bell/Rogers one. Why don't you just purchase a Bell/Rogers one, assuming they will exist, from a place like Negri Electronics? (Unless, of course, you want it ASAP, which I don't blame you for)
Also, you may not need to buy outright from AT&T to keep your unlimited data plan, unless you don't want to renew a contract. I tested this out a few days ago by going through the steps of "purchasing" a Captivate with a 2-year renewal. When it got to the services and features step, I was defaulted on the selection of my current, unlimited data plan. I was not forced to select a tiered plan. I guess the plans are grandfathered unless you plan to change the services on your renewal.
But I will be getting an Atrix once their available. I have never unlocked or rooted my Nexus One, and I don't plan on doing it for this phone either. I'm more of a casual user (relatively, compared to everyone here).
For those in the UK, the Atrix is headed to Orange in Q2.

I personally would not touch a Motorola product.
I really want the Atrix and am saving for it too. I'll probably just be cautious and wait to see what the hackability of it.
I think we should start a petition demanding for an unlocked boot loader. Then again that would never work. Stupid Motorola.

I'm not really thinking about giving up the N1, but picking up the Atrix as a second phone. Will swap out the sim card and buy from someone other than Att. The minute you change anything on your account, the faster you get taken for a ride. As far as Att goes, they still think I'm on an Iphone 2! It doesn't pay to buy direct unless you want a contract extension or lose your unlimited data plan. Will buy from ebay or a third party. Eventually Att will eliminate unlimited data in an effort to maximise profits and relieve network congestion. When that happens my phone will have the wifi radio on 24/7 and sit docked. The Atrix should be available in about a month.

Sounds like an upgrade to me!
If you've got the money to burn why not? This thing will set the standard for 2011 and is futureproofed in this regard.
Very small chance that I would upgrade though...
The Altrix is a killer phone. Just two things stand in my way:
1) price unlocked, no contract
2) ability to root.
My Nexy is more than capable and the only thing I miss is HDMI out.

Because I don't want to go through buying it from a 3rd party with shipping and all to the U.S. it could just be a hassle. I guess I could just buy it outright from Bell or Rovers but there is also the added benefit of another member of XDA making out so they can keep there plan.
The plan change comment only works if the new phone is of the same class. Since AT&T recognizes my Nexus One as a "basic" phone I qualify for the $10 unlimited data plan add-on for my family plan. Something that did not happen when I upgraded my plan a few months ago for the Captivate due to it being" smartphone" which means unlimited data is $30 or $25 for the 2GB cap. So this would happen again if I tried to upgrade to the Atrix. Not to mention, I used my upgrade so I wouldn't be able to get the subsidized price for the Atrix.
BTW- Your Nexus is already unlocked, they all are

I used a Milestone for a bit and loved everything except the encrypted bootloader.
With OC and Froyo it was a lot of fun. But I will never again buy a Motorola phone. To me the Atrix is tempting as well but their politics concerning the bootloader is not acceptable.
I prefer my "broken" N1 (washing mashine -> No bluetooth, no FM radio, no camera) over any Motorola mobile every single time.

Hi, i'm looking at getting a new phone for my wife and been looking at the fascinate from telus as it's on sale for $99 with 3 yr contract.
I heard that telus in the coming weeks will be launching a few new phones though i have no idea what they are or if they'll be any smart phones.
so with that said, if you were to get a phone today, would you still get the fascinate or would you hold off for a couple of weeks?

thanks
No. But, I am on Verizon.
Telus may be a different story.
Nope. I'd choose an HTC or a Motorola over the sammy if I had to do it all over again.
Yes ... but only because of the price I paid. ($50 / no activation)
-Doug
If I could, I'd wait for the dual core phones to come out. If I had to buy now, I'd still get the fascinate. My son has the Incredible, my father-in-law has the X, overall I like the fascinate better than either of those.
Absolutely. I still think it's best in class.
But i agree that if you could wait, wait for a dual core. But for now, there isn't anything the fascinate can't do.
If I had to do it over again, or if I needed a phone right now, yes, I would choose the Fascinate, no doubt about it. It really is a great phone. Not without its quirks and annoyances, but what phone is? If I didn't need a new phone really bad, then given the new powerhouses coming out within the next couple months, I would probably take some time to consider the options. I've never liked Motorola's designs until now, but I must admit that the Bionic looks very tempting. Of course, the locked bootloader crap might give me pause (let's hope they fix that like they claimed they will).
Once rooted and de-bloated, it's still the leader ATM. This will change in a couple of months though.

What he said. No way would I lock into it for 3 years. It is a good phone and all, in fact, I would do the same thing again because the others in this class have problems too. But I bought mine used off of fleabay so I am not locked in. This is a tool for me to learn Android on. I have a very strong feeling that I will be wanting something new in about a year.
I bought this device planning on selling it and upgrading after about six months. Now I plan OJ keeping it for a while. Great even right out. Of the box. If this was for my wife I wouldn't rootbor anything - just stock update to dl09 and let it roll. If I were buying today I would absolutely buy this device. All phones have issues - this one is no different. Bur overall a fantatstic device. I am guessing your wife does not need duel core or it would be her on the nerd forum with us and not you. What sucks for us in Canada is the high cost of our monthly plans and the fact that we have to lock into the plans for 3 years.

I've been doing 1-year contracts with Verizon, not because I plan on leaving, but because I don't want to be locked into the same phone for so long without any upgrade discounts. That allowed me to upgrade off the Eris to the Fascinate after 10 months. The Fascinate was made available for sale conveniently a day before I was eligible for upgrade with discount. That day of waiting was torture.
I'm on Verizon and I'd still buy it again even without the Froyo update. Most of the bad press on this phone has been because of the lack of Froyo. Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have it, but I had it on my old phone and it's not that big of a deal. The responsiveness of the phone and the beautiful samoled screen win out in the end. Besides, if you're on Telus, you'll have Froyo anyway.

I guess it's supposed to be coming the 28th of this month. But for $300? Don't think so...

This is the phone I've been waiting for. I know alot of people are pissed at Samsung.... but no other manufacturer can match the hardware, and since this phone is Droid branded, It should receive the support and updates that it deserves
sent from my fascinating fascinate eating delicious froyo.
I wouldn't expect a lot of xda developer support for the charge however. I base this on statements made by the devs and the fact that the SGS2 will be following shortly.

It's not even running Gingerbread..what a joke.
Yeah if this was the SGS2 and it was $300. I would consider THAT a good price.
4G, dual core 1.2Ghz, EVERYTHING ELSE. That'll be the standard of phones to beat for a year.
Yeah with all due respect the Charge pretty much is our SF with 4G. Yeah you get a FFC and a slightly larger screen but not a real upgrade IMO. More power to anyone purchasing this sucker but as for me I'll hold out for a more tangible increase on the specs
Yeah its running the same hummingbird processor overclocked to 1.2 ghz. Just like half the rooted fascinate users.

Actually all the reviews out today say its the same 1Ghz as the stock SF/hummingbird. But your point remains the same. Its the same cpu we got
I read that the SGS2 will be on at&t not on verizon, if that is true, we only have the option of motorola bionic if we want to buy a dual core phone, and I am not buying motorola, they want to restrict so much what you can do with your phone by encrypting their bootloaders, not a pro-costumer company I would say
Dont fret, plenty coming down the pike

I wonder if and how this will come in place for the Bionic. This has the potential to completely shift everyone to purchasing a Bionic:

i would bet almost anything that every major carrier will get a variant of the sgs2...id imagine though that tmo and att get them first...followed at some point by sprint and vzw
$250 through AmazonWireless PreOrder:
http://wireless.amazon.com/dp/B004XD1S4M/
I expect the price to fall about $100 over the course of a month after release. I bet you can get it for about $150 a month after release or sooner.
One way to achieve that: Keep an eye on the best deal, if you are eligible for upgrade w/ 2 yr contract discount, then take the best deal to a VZN store and ask them to beat it. If you get a competent sales person, they will find a creative way to beat the price.
I got the Fascinate the first day it came out (unintentionally, I hadn't even heard of it before that day). I looked up prices online, took the best price I could find in and they beat it. My price out the door was a little higher, but with the mail in rebate and the service credits I got on my next months bill: my final price was far less than it would have been any other way at the time.
SGS2 yes, charge no. The name doesn't mean it will get any better support then any of the other samsung phones.

no, just that it has a stupid droid marketing campaign and contest
$300 for the Charge makes more sense than $200 for the Incredible 2. Who would even get that over the Fascinate at the *same* price?
Incidentally, it looks like Captivate ROM dev designgears may be getting a Charge.

pretty awesome deal, also if you're a premier member call them they will waive activation and give you credits
This is what they do to get rid of any stock units. Eol for Epic production it seems.

someone was just talking about it's eol for the epic.. so what's the replacement phone? g2x or something? because as far as i know, im going back to htc.. only because of the dev community, DEF NOT FOR 3D. anyone have a clue??
lol you also get a free lady gaga cd with a 2 year activation
lol figures
ya clearly screw lady gaga but for free? Im all about that. I already have it but def getting it for a family member since we are about to have gingerbread etc seems like the phones about to hit its sweet spot honestly.
Figures, and I just upgraded my phone to an Epic but payed $90 though Amazon. Wonder if I am able to return it and get my upgrade credit back to buy it though Bestbuy. Oddly enough, I went to bestbuy first to buy it to see if they would price match, but was a no go.
Well, that's definitely a kick in the no-nos. Paid $230 7 months ago and now it's free. smdh.
Bought mine back in january, its ok, my next purchase will be a tablet, so ill get all the new feature with that.

I suppose its possible. Looks like they are featuring an Android phone from each of the big 3. AT&T HTC Inspire "4G", free also. Do you think its at end of life? Just asking because I have no idea what it usually sells for. Also, Verizon Fascinate is free.

It's far from end of life. It will stay being their best keyboard phone as the galaxy 2 wont have one. I mean it really depends what you want out of your phone but for free...this hardware will still be considered very solid and able to perform for the next couple years

I agree. What I should have opened with is "I suppose anything is possible". Its what I really meant.
Oh, and thanks for your post. One daughter has a Hero and another has a Pixi and they both are in need of a new phone. My son and I have Epics and we love them. For me though, I have found Swype so easy I hardly ever open my keyboard.

What do you mean waive activation. Can't I just go online and activate myself? Also, what do you mean "give you credits".
Thanks again!

It's the nature of consumer electronics these days; fast depreciation. It's entire possible that this phone could go Eol in a few months. It is no longer the newest and fastest device on the block.
I wonder if there will be an "Epic 2", or at least a Galaxy S2 with a keyboard. Samsung seems to be releasing a new Galaxy S every year. I imagine we will have more information around late summer.

Crazy Deal! I say you go for the deal that gives you the free Lady Gaga CD.
I'm so pissed that I bought this phone a week ago. Now I have to waste $35 for a gay ass restocking fee. I'm never upgrading my phone through Sprint store again. I'll just do it online now since it doesn't have this gay fee.
Evo 3d
$199
on contract!!!
I think my father's actually planning on getting an Epic in the next week or two. He is impressed with mine and frustrated beyond belief with his old blackberry. His contract is up so at zero cost I expect him to be happy with this. And honestly, a 1ghz phone that will be running GB in the near future w/ a 4in screen and a 5-row keyboard. There's very little that compares.
nice deal, i'll pick one up
