Media file tags - Galaxy S II General

I took my PAYG Samsung Galaxy S II back to O2 (UK) for a refund today, after 2 days of use. Love the speed, thinness, screen quality and size. TouchWiz is dire - but can be replaced with Launcher Pro. I could not live with the fact that most of my music files came up with <unknown artist> and no cover art. I use DoubleTwist to synchronise (after a fashion!) iTunes playlists to my Android devices. The same music files that appear correctly on the Nexus S and the Xoom would not show the artist/cover art information on the SGS2. So I know the files are tagged correctly. I also tried a direct copy of music files from my iMac to the SGS2, but same issue. Tried the stock music app as well as DoubleTwist and the Samsung Music hub - the media details were missing whatever the player.
I have spent many hours getting my media files correctly tagged and cannot live with a device that ignores all my hard work. May seem a small point and I can't understand how this could happen.
Has anyone else experienced the same problem and is there a cure?

Did you try PowerAmp? That works perfectly fine...that scans all the tags and brings up the details. I never use the stock music player cos it's not that good imo.

Everything else sucks compared to PowerAmp.

I think Doubletwist was your problem, I've seen another user at Androidforums who had the same thing, his files were fine when he just sideloaded them.

I agree DoubleTwist is far from ideal, but it has worked OK to move music to the Nexus S and the Xoom - with all information complete. I also tried side-loading an album that showed with no artist information or cover art after the DoubleTwist sync and it made no difference. PowerAmp may be a good player on the device, but does it handle music transfer (from a Mac), as I need to move music in an iTunes playlist to my phones - too cumbersome to move files individually.

im using FLAC files with winamp and had no real issues, tho i did notice this morning that some tracks arent in the correct order but id have to check my tagging before i make assumtions
other than that not had one problem with them, you sure you didnt really want to take your phone back anyway seems a small matter to return such a nice phone for when it can probably be fixed

I'm not an iTunes user, so I don't know what the other softwares are, but I am aware there are several other options you could try to sync across from iTunes. Maybe give some others a try?

Found the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1062137&highlight=media
Seems that the SGS2 does not recognise artists (and presumably cover art) tags if the file is in M4a format. That would explain why some of my files were OK and others not. Most of my iTunes library is in M4a format, purchased from iTunes. Way too much work to convert everything to MP3 and no reason why this popular format is not supported, as it is supported on every other Android phone (including my Samsung Nexus S).

It was me that started that thread and I still have not found a solution, which is annoying, hopefully someone smarter than me will find an answer!
Just seams an odd thing as no other phone I've ever had has had this problem! And I'm not going to convert all my music either! Maybe someone will get the stock music app working?

It is really strange as I tried the Samsung Music Hub, the stock music player and DoubleTwist and they all could not read the tags. So it must be something that Samsung has done to the file format on this particular phone. I doubt it is an application fault, so it is up to Samsung to acknowledge and fix this oddity. I returned mine and will now wait for the HTC Sensation.

HTC HD2 media player track order sd card probs

Hi. I'm new to this so apologies if this problem has already been answered. I've bought and installed a 16GB sd card in my HD2 and have transferred a fair bit of music to listen to. However media player is playing albums in an incorrect order (seemingly random, not alphabetical). When I transfer an album from the sd card to the 'my music' folder on the device, it plays in the right order! I've tried neptune which plays in the correct order but that won't respond to my bluetooth headset (when I press play, it automatically uses media player). Now when I copied and pasted an album onto my device which was also on the sd card, media player displayed the tracks twice in the correct order 1-15 consecutively (1-15, then 1-15 again). I deleted the device version and the sd card version went back to the seemingly random order. Can anyone solve this irritating problem?
Addition
Could I just add that when I say the problem is with windows media player I am reffering to the music player within HTC sense. Please help!
I have the same issue, very irritating , could anybody help please??
A poor solution
Right, until I can better this I'm gonna cut and paste the album I want to listen to from the sd card onto the device.
No
No, that doesn't work
Have the same problem with the HTC music application and Windows Media Player. Pocket Player and Pocket Tunes don't have this problem.
A solution that works!
Right, it's like this. Got to settings>personalize>home screen tabs and uncheck 'music'. Open 'Windows media player' either by playing a song off your music folder or adding a quick link to it. Then click 'library' and get it to scan for al your files. Now use windows media player as your player not HTC sense and it will all be fine. Thank goodness!
is there the same resolution for the HTC player?
Thanks mate. Now I can see it works fine on the Windows media player. but thats a pain to use with those annoying menus. I like the HTC player as its very much like the iphone player & its easy to use. Has anyone found the fix for the HTC player or is there another good working player thats similar to the iphone player.
Cheers
Shala
Hasn't anyone found a solution to this silly problem yet?
When you transfer music to the device, it apparently removes any existing track order, yet not every album is out of order when I play it on the HD2! It makes no sense at all.
Using WMP is no solution, I'd rather play the music without order or sit for several hours making playlists for every album.
EDIT: Googling the problem, I found a thread about a problem like this for the HTC Touch Pro, where a solution was proposed:
Found a solution for you...
you will need a registry editor for your HTC Touch Pro. I recommend the PHM registry editor (google it).
Locate the following key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\HTCAlbum\Ignored and modify the key Music Gizmo1 to the path you want the music file to be stored. I created a folder on the SD card named MUSIC and updated the path to \Storage Card\Music then rebooted the phone and all is well. Now I can turn off my phone, pop in the SD card and copy all my tunes over and bam.. I have all my songs at my finger tips. I hope this helps

hi,
if this does not work, i can share my application. It scans your music folder and generates playlists in the correct order.
it uses mp3 and wma tags for cd and track sequence. it works well for me but sometimes you need to clean up tags on desktop before copying music.
I have a 16 gb card as well and all my albums are ordered correctly using playlists instead.
I am sure using media monkey to synch gives you an option to push playlists as well and should give desured results.

Damn, it didn't work. Quite disappointing.
Now how about this app that you mentioned?
And I can't find such a function in Media Monkey, any ideas?
Regarding media monkey please have a look at here:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f41/tutorial-syncing-music-and-playlists-3761/
You will need to connect the device in usb disk mode and then you can synchronise playlists when uploading tracks.
I will upload the application later on today or earlier tomorrow morning. I would however recommend the option above first as the application I have is picky on the tags and it expects track numbers and disc numbers to be set correctly in metadata.

They are. I'm also picky.
But yeah, the Media Monkey solution does sound smoother, I will try it out.
Thanks.
Hi again,
I have attached the files to this post. I still think, if Media Monkey option works for you thats the way to go. But this little tool helped me with the track order issues I had.
If your files are not in \Storage Card\music folder, you will need to set the location using the botton next to the text box.
Then you need to point the location to save the playlists. For me "\storage card\playlists" worked with every version of manila I used (Polaris, Diamond, HD, HD2)
It only supports mp3 and wma so there isnt much point to add more extensions, however you can remove one to exclude files of that extension.
Once all set up, you need to chose file - > Create playlists and application will scan your files and save the playlists in desired location.
I am using it with 16GB card and on Hd2 its pretty fast.
Here are some limitations:
1 - Extra information is created in the palylist file but still, when you select the playlist in manila player, it does not show fields like artist.
2 - Although some tags are valid, they cause errors in the application. I have some very old track I converted from CD's records mid/late 90s and if I see the issue on the mobile, I just run an application like Musicbrainz Picard to reftesh the tags and it all working again.
3 - If you have multi cd albums and disc numbers are not tagged, the track order may not be correct.
I always use usb mode to copy tracks and for me this tool works good enough to create the playlists the way I want to listen.
Hope it helps someone.
Simple Fix that worked for me
I to had the same problem with CD coming up in the wrong order in the player in HTC sense. When I checked what CD's were in the wrong order I noticed that they were all ones I had purchased off itunes and that the track information wasn't being picked up by my windows desktop. So i converted all my itunes music to MP3s using real player converter and now all of my library is in the correct order.
Hello,
I have the same problem. However, the tags are properly showing in all of these software :
MusicBrainz Picard
Windows Media Player
Windows 7 properties
So the track numbers seem to be correctly assigned. But still, the album tracks don't appear in the correct order for several albums in the HTC audio software.
The playlist utility keeps crashing on me, too.
By the way the HTC support regarding this issue is *terrible*, they keep telling me that the player sorts the music by "last time you played it". Nope. It doesn't. If so, when I play a single track, it would either pop at first place in the album or last place, depending on what they meant in their ballistic explanation (1 sentence). It, obviously, doesn't, and a player acting like that would be the stupidest music player in the world.
Does anyone have a solution ?
Did the "MediaMonkey" solution work,Overlord Yuri ?
Thanks in advance for any anwsers,

I barely tried and didn't have any luck. Since then I've given up..
Oh, okay.
Thank you for your input, anyway.
This thing with the HTC support is starting to get on my nerves, especially how they still try to convince me that the problem will go away if I hard reset the phone (nope, done two times already due to FixOperaFlash ruining my config, and still the music player doesn't work)...
I have figured a work around to the track order problem.
Download mp3tag you can find it on download.com or just google it.
I opend up all my music and looked at the albums that were out of order.
They seemed fine. I just right click on the track and saved the tag. I though why not nothing else seems to work.
I resynced the album and it was in order!
I guess try it out and see if it works.
S**t man , it worked !
HUGE thanks to you !
By the way I just opened the whole library (which was already on the phone), selected all, and clicked on save so it refreshed all tags. And after deleting /Application Data/HTC/Audio Manager/AudioManager_eng.vol so it regenerates the library, it worked like a charm.

FLAC Tags not displayed

Hi all,
I am still on original firmware JF3 but from what I've understood the problem persists even with latest firmware :
FLAC tags are not displayed on the stock audio player.
Some would suggest to switch to an alternative audio player but I like this one quite a lot, espacially the drawer function on the lock screen to control the player without having to unlock the screen.
Has anyone heard of a way to correct this? This is big trouble for me as all my music is on this format. On my former music player Samsung YP-Q1, it had also taken several formwares to display FLAC tags correctly but I expected Smsung to handle that from the start with such a top rated smartphone.
Anyone interested

agree this one of the (minor) critics I have, its annoying.
I have a lot of FLAC files as well and it's 50/50, some work perfectly with the tag, others don't. I'll have to take a look, i think it has to do with the tag version
Did you find a pattern? Is it ID3 tags vs. FLAC tags? If so, which version of ID3 works?
I've tried many different apps and tag types, but never got them working in FLACs on my stock (JF5) Galaxy S. I'm still hoping there is a way to get them working or that some new fw fixes this.
If someone knows how to get tags working for FLACs please share it with us...
Anyone looking into this at all? It's exremely annoying indeed!
I use Tag&Rename for my taggin. I have tried lots of music apps and a number of firmware updates... nothing has worked.
Did you try another software? try mediamonkey for instance. If it does not work maybe you can use mediamonkey for using folders instead of tags. (genre by genre or artist by artist or both? )
This is a workaround but tags allow alternative sorting by gender which is what I miss.
The stock firmware already uses the folders by default as it doesn't recognize the tags, not exactly the same thing you say of course because here it does it only with one folder depth.

Best way to copy music to phone

Does anyone have any suggested techniques for copying MP3 or WMA files to the phone (SD or Internal memory)?
What I've discovered is that synching with Media Player will transfer over these hidden files (album art, desktop.ini, and folder.jpg). These hidden files seem to mess with the way the Sense music player is picking up the music and what ends up happening is that in the music players details view, it does indeed break up the artists and the albums etc. HOWEVER, in the default view (the one that shows the album covers) it doesn't know what to do and only shows you the album cover of the particular album you are listening too. There's no way to get to the other album without going into the details menu and selecting it from there.
Whew - SO, all that being said; what I found is that if I delete the album art, desktop.ini and folder.jpg files BEFORE manually dragging and dropping the music over to the phone it seems to resolve the problem.
So is there a more streamlined approach to doing this?

Put your INC in DISK DRIVE mode and copy your files to the SD card using Windows Explorer. You can also take out the SD card, put it in a reader, plug that into your PC's card reader, and put the files there via Windows Explorer.
Of course, all this presupposes that your MP3 files are correct (e.g., their ID3 tags are correct; and the album art was already integrated).
I use Tunesync, there're also isyncr, doubletwist, websharing....
The thing I like about these sync software is that they put your music in a playlist, which all the players can see.
First thing I would do is ditch the default android player though and stay away from Music PlayerPro too (just a skinned default player-same options same problems).
I am using bTunes, I think it's already abandon by the developer, but since it works and I already paid for it so might as well.
I recommend Mort Player if you don't look at it too much, Man!..that UI is just plain Ugly.
DoubleTwist is great. It also syncs your videos as well. Best part is it only syncs what you want. You create playlists and it syncs based on their contents

Thanks for the info everyone. I guess the bottom line is that music software on Android is still in infancy stages with a lot of options but nothing that really just stands out. I hate to admit it but looks like Apple has a (+) in this department for now. My Incredible is a filler phone to hold me over until with WINMO7 stuff starts to hit Verizon so just looking for the best combinations of software on this thing.
I'm totally new to Android but I would have thought that the folks over at Google would have taken the media experience a little more seriously and spent some time on those aspects out of the box.

Google was doing fine, 2.1 was solid. It uses up battery like there's no tomorrow, but solid.
2.2 seem like it's coded by 5 year olds... in Mongolia...using Vtech's Vsmile system....during recess. Maybe that's why the battery last longer, nothing works. Could be a way to make us pay for third-party apps (free enterprise at work).
Bus, now that's just plan 'ol funny. Educational (for me) at the same time.
I use the free version of Media Monkey on my Win XP desktop and Meridian on my Dinc. Then I sync playlists (like I used to on my iPhone 3G). Works like a champ.
The iPhone is far superior in the music catagory (dsp, organization, genius) but u have to keep inmind it stemed from an ipod. That said the closest ive come to it is boomboxoid but its terribly slow and often unresponsive. Which is why i primarily use pandora now...an ipod like music player is the app i want most!

I've mentioned bTunes above. It's the exact replica of the iPhone/iPod player.

[Q] Embedded mp3 covers disappaered

I did have over 2000 tracks on my SE Arc, all showing the embedded cover-art, that is included in the mp3.
But all of a sudden, those cover-images are not visible any more. I'm using the standard media player of SE.
I saw in the forum that the same thing also happened with previous xepria-models, but i could not find a real solution: emptying the cache f.ex. etc. did not work.
So i might re-copy all of them: but the same thing may happen again ... :-(
Any idea what might have caused this, as there were visible for at least two/three weeks ?
Kind Regards,
Paul
Have the cover images been stripped from the files or is the media player simply not reading them?
Because the two are very different problems.
If it's the latter, then I'd personally say look for a different media player.
There are a number of them on the market that are superior to stock apps, such as WinAmp and and PowerAMP.
Well I ran into this same problem. It worked fine on my X10 using Sailing Media sync from my Mac (iTunes) to my X10. When I synced to the Arc about 20% of the album covers came across. I then deleted all the music and installed "iSyncr for Mac" (paid version but very cheap) on my Arc. I then synced the music and about 75% of the album art came across. App was way easier to use than Sailing Media sync (which was installed on my Mac)
I then installed "cover art downloader" (free app) . It found most of the rest with the general overall scan. Any remaining ones I could search for the album or artist and it would show a bunch of selections and I found them all.
Actually this worked pretty well overall.
Thanks.
The cover is still present in the mp3: SE did not remove it.
Using another program (Player Pro trial), it works perfectly.
Disappointed nevertheless: SE creates a multimedia telephone, but their app is not even able to show embedded mop3 covers. So i have to reorganize all, with other android app's. What is the added value of SE in all that ?!
I also deleted all music and recopied the mp3-files top the phone, but it still does not show any mp3 cover: so something must have changed, because it worked before...
Well, methinks that it's the Android player issue actually. Sony Ericsson did not include their wonderful Mediascape this time =(
They only added an infinity button onto the Anndroid music player.
When I was owning Rachael, Mediascape was da bomb. Though not all my embedded album arts were shown, but at least it had a 80% rate of display, unlike the 20% rate now.
And worse, initially the player couldn't read my 2,000+ wma files, only displaying a few measley mp3 files (c'mon... I got myself a 32gb card cos I trust Sony to host a good media player, right?).
Did abit of googling, realized it's the android version that's affecting it.
Only solution was to installed PowerAmp, and it displayed 60% of my albumarts, and my wma files could be played. Though some were omitted from the listings under 'artists', 'albums' etc.
Seems after installing that, the droid player could read wma files as well (but albumart visibility is still 20% -_-)
I'm no IT expert, but my guess is a wma plugin was not included into the Arc?
I don't know what Sony Ericsson is doing, abandoning such a great software they created for Rachael, leaving this new, sexy model media-crippled.
Personally, I don't like to install another music player when I have 1 in my phone, for space reasons, but the droid music player is too disappointing.
If you do a google, the albumart issue exists in all droid phones.
I remember having the same issue, it was caused by loss of the sdcard/Android/com.android.providers.media directory, which stores the cache of album art, and which I accidentally deleted. At least I think it was this directory, because I deleted the whole sdcard/Android directory.
Media player refused to re-create the cache, for some reason. I fixed the issue by renaming the folder with my music from 'Music' to 'music', after this media player rebuilt the cache.
Hope this helps.

Almost All Music Tracks Have Same Album Artwork?

Okay guys this one gets me...
I have done a lot to try and figure this out but this is such a weird problem I had to make this post. (I feel like the answer must be something simple!!)
Anyways so I just recently moved my entire iTunes library to my Mac(Hackintosh) because I like Mac more. So moved all my songs to iTunes on the Mackintosh HD. All good there.
When I went and deleted all my music off my Nexus 6P to go and re-sync it with the new library everything went fine as well.
BUT now for some RANDOM reason, like probably 80% if my tracks have the same album art work... not all of them though, just like most of them... SO ANNOYING.
TO NOTE:
- I use iSyncr to transfer all my music from my iTunes to my android device. works great and always has.
- I use BlackPlayer as my main music player. Has worked great so far..
- When I open my GOOGLE PLAYER (think this is the stock audio player idk) all the tracks in question all have the same album art but its a different album art........ wtf
- My iTunes library is fine and all album art is correct. Not all tracks have art but thats fine..
WHAT I HAVE TREID:
- Deleted entire music library and iSyncr app off device and re-synced everything with no luck..same problem
- Deleted black player and all associated files on device. no luck
- Tried multiple music players and all have the same problem. Almost all tracks that didn't have any album artwork on my device now have A$AP Rockys album cover as their image... but in black player the album cover they all have is one from Adventure Club...
- Used a 3rd party album artwork software to delete the troublesome artwork. no luck, doesn't work.
I am so frustrated has anyone ever has this issue? I Googled and couldn't get any hits. Thanks guys.
I got the same issues as well... will keep a watch on this thread to see if some1 posts some help
Sent from my Nexus 6P using XDA-Developers mobile app
Strangest part is I had been using it for months on windows before and never had this issue. Even my other macbook it worked fine :/
Anyone?
k Well I figured it out myself haha.
http://www.jrtstudio.com/blog/iTunes-12-4
Something wasn't working right so this thread helped me. Deleted the app from my phone completely and all my music again as well as reinstalled it on my mac and updated the iTunes settings. album art works now and I am so happy.
