3g/4g on Iconia A500?? - Acer Iconia A500

Went to best buy yesterday, and noticed the slot where sdcard goes, there's another slot that has grey tape covering it. Perhaps a 3g/4g sim slot? Best Buy sales dude removed tape and it looks like it would fit a sim card. Hmm...

Don't do it! We seriously need a FAQ. Your sim card will fall in and you won't get it back unless you open the Iconia up. The Wifi model lacks the hardware to use a sim card.

The sim card slot with dimension for stand SIM or Acer only release for unique network providers ? And SD card only format with FAT on A500 is that true? If yes what should we do with another format?

If you take the little sticker that covers the slot, it has the same icon as the SD card - an SD card shaped indention with an arrow pointing to the hole. Right below the slot, there is wording "sim card". Wonder why they didn't enable this?

Yes I find it out and on some forum fans say that it only empty hole SIM card slot but someone say that it not support by A500 but A501 another say kernel has 3G support but sim card slot on A500 was empty and does not work. Where to believable ?

On my A500 its written warranty void if sim card tape is broken.
Anyway anybody tried USB 3G modem dongle with Acer A500 ?

Have a look in the Development forum. There is a kernel module posted there to allow USB 3G dongles to be used. Root required and for advanced users only.

This works for me
I know this won't help many, but,,, if you need/want 3G/4G, easiet way...
I use my rooted EVO with custom rom, and run wifi router ..
Eats battery tho.. get a backup.. would be nice to have an acer with it built in or an option.
The HTC View that Sprint is releasing with 4G did not impress me with the 7inch screen, but I already have EVO, and I don't have to worry about the 2gb data cap plan on a data device, whereas a rooted phone, no cap exists

is possible to buy xoom in the Usa and use it in Italy

Hi, tomorrow I will be in NY for a couple of days and I want to buy a Motorola Xoom, is possible to use it outside of the Us? And if it's possible could I use my sim for the 3g connection?
Thanks you in advance for your kind reply
If you buy it here, you will only be able to use it with WiFi. It doesn't support 3G sim cards.
Sorry for the dumb question, it's a wifi only model the one sold in Usa?

No, its Wi-Fi and 3G, but it is Verizon only which has the Verizon 3G "Sim Card" built in.

no theres no Verizon sim card in it. There is a placeholder for where the LTE sim card will go once the upgrade happens, however at the moment its just an embedded CDMA radio

Ah sorry, we don't have CDMA in the UK, so I wasn't 100% sure about it!
Stew
I don't understand very well...It has a slot for SIM but only for Verizon's SIMs...?
No. It uses CDMA. No SIM card. CDMA is different from GSM and it doesn't exist in Europe.
Basically you can use it in Italy over wifi as your data connection.

In the US there are basically 2 systems:
1- CDMA which is used by Verizon (xoom). There is not chip to be attached by the user. However the Xoom has an slot for the upgrade to 4g and that is the slot that you see in the tablet.
2- GMS used by other carriers and the standard in the EU.
You can use the xoom in Italy as a wifi only.
i want to change the system software in Italian of my xoom buyed in US on amazon...how can do it ?
Were the heck did this thread come from?? XDA members have people so afraid to start new threads this guy piggybacked this one.

WIFI oly Xoom HAS (!!!) a working Sim slot

If flashed with 3g rom Mobile Network Activation is available as an option. I've tried my 3G BB card, activation failed, but my sip was non working after, needed to reboot BB twice, to pick up a signal. So, from my humble observation everything is there, but disabled to compete with iPad2 in terms of price
iFixit! We need a wifi XOOM teardown.
XOOM'd from the XDA app.
3G ROM is CDMA, which doesn't use SIM cards (the Xoom 3G SIM is for the as-yet-uninstalled LTE radio), so I'm not quite sure this means anything (it was going to fail in any case).
does it mean the WIFI version in principle can still be upgraded to support LTE?
I've wondered about that, too. Seems to me that once the ROM post-upgrade gets leaked, then anyone who buys that LTE Mini-PCI card and is comptent with a Torx-5 bit should be able to subscribe to an LTE plan from VZ and get the SIM from them.
...O wait it says so in the title
You sure you aren't mistaking that for microSD?
I know right? it sounds pretty careless of them to leave it there, instead of going with a completely different motherboard.
I hardly beleive that any company will leave silicon/parts in a device to then sell it cheaper? It just doesn't make any sense, you don't see a Biturbo BMW with its biturbo disabled and then sold for less... just the turbo parts cost a lot why would they not charge you while you still receive the same? might as well give you a scooter for free don't you think.
Production is well cheaper nowdays that's why most companys can have 5 different revisions of the same device with different configurations, hence GSM, CDMA, wifi only, 16gb 32gb, etc. they save a lot more making what they need and not making a full device then criple it down to "cut cost" that's just illogical..
No, There are 2 slots under the cover...
My knowledge in this are is very limited, but during mobile network activation (the icon stated 3g), and after couple of attempts sim was locked (which is impossible if it was blank, leftover slot). But I might be totally wrong...

The SIM-card reader is connected (most likely to a serial port on the Tegra chip). The actual LTE radio Mini-PCI card is not in there, however (we have to send it in for upgrade).
I'm surprised there's code that's actually touching the SIM, however- but one thing to consider is the QD6600 radio that's used for CDMA data can also do GSM/UMTS data as well (but needs a different modem SW and some different antenna-interface hardware).
The wifi zoom could potentially retain its 4g sim slot because it was paired with the flash memory slot. I would bet that it doesn't have the radio for cdma/GSM/lte/etc. It is highly unlikely due to the cost of just the multi-functional radio chips that power the slots ;-)
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
The WIFI Xoom definitely has a SIM slot
And if you think that 800 price tag is for a radio chip you are mistaken. the whole 3g version doesn't cost $400 max.
Then whats it for if not a 3G radio?
The Wifi Xoom is not the same as the verizon one. I have already removed the back cover and its a different mainboard. All the 4g/3g stuff has been removed. Sorry guys..

Does it still have a mini-pcie slot? Could you post a pic?
This has absolutely nothing to do with development. Please post in the correct section.
No it did not and no I didn't grab a pic. It's just bare magnesium where the pcie slot would be
Besides the lack of radio I'm sure there's a lack of required antennas for any cellular radio to work.

MZ604 WI-FI to 3G

Hello Folks
I have a Canadian bought Motorola XOOM MZ604 which has a slot for SIM Card, which I tried and doesnt work.
Can I flash any rom to make this 3G? can someone guide me to the appropriate thread
Welcome to xda.. im a canuck as well and have only had my MZ604 for a few weeks.from my understanding our units do not have the components rigged on the motherboard for 3G. Initial us versions when purchased at the start had to return there units months later to motorola for upgrade which took approx a week.I think we are stuck with just our wifi units as they are...Its still a great unit and can be connected to internet via bluetooth tethering as well as just wifi. Old Windows Mobile 6.5 Phones using wmwifirouter 2.0 Works great via bluetooth to connect to the internet... Hope this helps..
again welcome to xda..

Yeah the wifi xooms has a wifi only chip installed, it is physically soldered to the motherboard. Where as the 3g ones had a multi band chip installed then later got a micro pcie card installed for the lte.
You can do it... there is a walk thru but the chip its self is about 200-250$ USD. And a LOT of know how

I don't mean to hijack anyone's thread but along the same lines as the OP, what would happen if one were to swap out the motherboard for the WiFi Xoom with a 3G board? These days a working replacement board costs like $60 on eBay, I was wondering whether it's a possibility because the 3G board comes with the miniPCI 3G card and a set of antenna leads (I think) and the rest of the hardware looks identical.

I'm sure it is possible if you know what you are doing. A person would need to do more than just swap out the motherboard, not to mention, they would have make sure the chip works, if not the chip would cost over $200 to purchase, but why do all that? Just purchase the 3G version the price is fairly cheap.

Google Nexus 7 32GB ( 3g+HSPA+ )

With the new nexus 7 32(3g) release.
can this make phone call?
Yes and no.
The 3G+HSPA+ is probably only for data, so if you use a VOIP service, then yes, but not like a traditional cell call.

This might not be entirely accurate.
A change in the framework-res file can expose the phone app.
The questions remains is if the modem iteself supports voice calls or only data.

Let me look at mine......
OH SNAP, there's no SIM at alll!! Or is that because neither myself nor anyone outside of Google have a 7 3G yet?
Think it's standard sim. I really hope this this can make calls, for get about Galaxy note II! My nexus 7 has a bigger screen.
It's a micro SIM. I don't have the link handy, but if you go to the Play Store and go to "more info" for the 3G N7, there's a section showing and describing inserting a micro SIM.
What I want to know is whether I can use the same SIM (T-Mobile) in both the N4 and the N7, and swap between them at will.

I thought that I just borrow this thread instead of making a new one. So does the HSPA+ N7 use Dual Carrier 4G (42mbits) or just regural 3G (21mbits)?

Does it really matter?
If you have a Standard sized SIM, just make a few cuts with scissors.
If you have a "Micro SIM" but the "SIM Adapter" which you place the Micro SIM inside to make it larger.
And Since Neither T-Mobile or AT&T (The largest GSM providers [in the US]) use Micro SIM (Other than for Iphones) I'm pretty sure the Nexus 7 will have a standard SIM slot.

I'm also curious as to whether the 3G version can make calls?
What are the problems to using this as a regular phone?
I'd really like to make and receive calls with a bluetooth headset and use the tablet as a PDA. The 7" screen would be perfect for a business solution I can think of while being able to integrate phone calls would solve the need for 2 devices. 7" is just the right size being a lot bigger than a phone but small enough to use as a mobile device.
I know no-one has got their hands on a 3G version but any input would be of help.

[Q] Any Roms w/ wifi calling like T-mobile baked in?

I am familiar with rooting and flashing, but have not done so yet on my N4. A Rom w/ wifi calling would make doing so a no brainer. Are there any roms with it baked in? I have a playstore 8 gb version and would really like the wifi calling of T-mobile. I have T-mobile as a carrier if that matters. Thanks.
As far as I know, wifi calling with N4 is imposible, tmobile tells otherwise though, but tmobile also offers n4 with sd card slot. Tmobile lies.
