Yet another reason I don't like Verizon.
Sprint will do it eventually. Just wait.
EVO Shift and XDA app
If I'm not mistaken, they're only gonna pull apps like pdanet but their aosp codes will still allow tether natively
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA Premium App
This only affects stock rom users who don't use 3rd party markets or don't know about side loading like we had to do back when Google first blocked tethering apps for t-mobile with the G1. What Google is doing is nothing they haven't done before. Tethering apps can still be installed manually and is built into asop roms. In the end nothing of value was lost.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
Yeah, it's a "stupid" tax. Are you too stupid/lazy to root a phone and use the root apps? I got my first android, a Shift, a few months ago and rooted it within a week. I am one of two people I know that has rooted their android out of 40 or so, some of them being programmers and IT guys. I am an English Teacher. WTF!
On a side note, I they pulled the two "tether for root users" apps from the market. Can anybody give me a working version for a sense rom on the shift for the "wired tether for root users' app? I can look up the apk on google but I don't know which one works as it seems to be a side project.
I have always used PDANet,even when my X10a was on 1.6. They are FORCING us to go online and download, all to extract and extort more money out of us,the customer,to satisfy shareholders. That's bull****!!

I am very familiar with rooting and all that jazz and have a droid 2 rooted and overclocked and undervolted blah blah blah. My fiance just got the epic 4g last night and she wants the bloatware gone and likes the general layout of the phone so not too much customization will be going on for her but I would like some advice from this side of the forums..
Can I rename the .apks to .apk.bak(what I've done for my droid 2) in the system app folder to get rid of the bloat??
And also is there a 4g hotspot hack because I see there are a ton of custom roms and such but she isn't really interested in all that so I was going to see if I could just install a .zip in clockwork recovery and get it to patch the files and install the hacked hotspot apk. That's what process I used for the droid 2 when enabling my 3g hotspot and figured it might be the same. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

SEARCH SEARCH SEARCH
Having that said. On the wiki there are links to posts on what apps are safe to remove. Regarding hotspot, get yourself some android tether son. You need to be rooted, but it works great. I have sucessfully connected from metro detroit to our vpn in Germany w/o issue using it. I can't find the link right now because as you know the google servers are down
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
somewhere on here there is a thread of safe apks to remove. if you're rooted (there is a nice one click on here too) then you can get sdx stock app removed (search that too which can backup and remove any and all system apps. if you leave the ROM odexed (in its natural state and not deodexed like all custom ROMs) then you can benefit from the MobileAP ported from the i9000 which is on here too, search that sucker, that will give you infrastructure mode whereas wireless tether gives you ad hoc. some lappys cant connect to ad hoc. otherwise wireless tether is great, gotta get one of the recent pre's i think the current market version wont work on galaxy s yet. search google.
oh, and this is bound to get moved to general, not development.
Oh okay thanks very much for the info, they do things a little different over on the droid 2 forums so sorry for posting to the development side of the fourm.

THE ADS ARE SOOO SMALL!!! XD
I love it's especially on the xda app, its in the bottom left hand corner, and is barely noticable.
Someone should start a thread on good apps that work on the Xoom, or start it here, I personally would but I'm new to android, which is why I would like to know some good apps. I mostly operate off 3g connection, which is why I don't want to try the download and try and delete method.
3 gigs 35 dollar $-$ wtf.
Ill start with what I have downloaded that's not a tablet app and works fine.
-Xda (obviously)
-Astro file manager
-skype (I read somewhere that they were going to make a tablet specific version for a fee)
-Dr Webb for android
That's all really.
Two that I dl'd that didn't work were vevo and pocketcloud
Vevo didn't play videos at all but I haven't tried on wifi yet.
Pocketcloud worked like it should with massive lag even on wifi, might just be cause its a free app, I dont know, like I mentioned thus is my first android device. And I must say, it wins.
Anyway, please help me find great apps and ill return the favor.
One awesome one for tablets is PewPew

Lol, I hadn't noticed the ad until you mentioned it. Just loaded xda on my xoom.

yeah i love that. but im sure they will change it and have ads take up more space.
Pay for the premium XDA app. Support the community and it's only $0.99 . I paid for it and I love the XDA theme and being able to set the app up the way I want it.
My xda app crashes all the time. At first I thought it was my rooted evo, but it does the same thing at the same place on the xoom. Hard to pay for something that keeps fc'ing.

If a tablet version is made, I will definitely buy the app. There are a lot of features I'd like to take advantage off that's not in the free app. But the free app does freeze a lot, right now I'm not even able to get into it because it's been stuck at the XDA loading screen. I can't seem to get it past that.
And I know they're going to make tablet apps with Huge ads, thats why phone apps are better
Hopefully they do make a tablet app for XDA tho, I'll even pay $2 if it has most the features of the site.

When they take out the unneeded permissions (GPS, phone identity) I will. Till then I use the web browser.
Go to manage applications in settings and reset the cache for the XDA App and it should fix the problem.

If your tethering in GB you will be monitored, so make sure your paying for the service. They have embedded software into GB system to monitor tethering. This was done by all Providers! This has been verified!
Thank you sir

Yes if you tether with gingerbread Verizon with show up at your house and kill you. It has been proven on a forum that it will happen so I read on the internet so it must be true...
Really, until you get something from Verizon saying they are tracking you and bla bla bull crap don't worry about the retards who keep beating the whole sky is falling tether crap. With noon more to go off of then that damn p3 article. NOTHING in that dumb ass post has been verified.
That said before you start Barnacle use titanium backup to freeze your notification bar and then it should work.
Also pdanet needs a usb to work (last time I checked) and the free version wont let you go to https sites (again it has been a while since I looked into this app so it may have changed)

Let me clarify something for everyone here. A contact of mine has looked into the issue. When you use the 3g hotspot, in the code, there is a value that is set to 0. It is believed that this is how they can track you. However NOBODY has lost service or had any adverse effects as of now. However, this is ONLY present if you use the stock 3g hotspot. As with anything, do it at your own risk, there almost certainly will NOT be a problem.

What is the name of the app to freeze?
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
I can most of the time using the TBH patcher and wifi heather. Its about how gingerbread handles/reports data sessions, meaning its different then froyo so it doesn't report teather apps as an internal data session, instead saying it is an external data sessions, thus redirecting to Verizon's weboage.
But if you can get teather running, there is no more or less risk than before on froyo, its the same possibilities.

Im am on the rooted .588 GB and have the TBH patch installed and use the Hotspot app to tether. At first I could not get it to connect half the time and the other half when it did connect seemed to suffer DNS related issues or drop connection.
I ended up adding my MAC address in the native app for authorized connections and have had ZERO issues ever since.
Does anyone know is the TBH patche is out there somewhere still available for download? By the time I got a hold of it the whole Internet was going crazy over the tethering thing. I would like to be able to tether with GB. Don't wan a have to go back down to froyo.

The apks? Probably.
Some will. Well most of your 3rd party apps from the market will. Some of the system .apk's won't. For example, I like the HTC Facebook. chat app, but when i tried to install it on Black Ice, it kept failing. Probably because it is a cyanogen based rom. Also my favorite search app is the Quick searck from TMobile with Google,Wikipedia Youtube,

MIUI has its own framework. Therefore, only those system apps will work on MIUI. Same goes for HTC. That's why it wouldn't work on Black Ice.
Also, just in case if you intend on trying to illegally distribute a paid app, some of them (I don't know how many, but probably many) have Market's legality check, and won't function when installed on a system they weren't purchased on.

you still should be able to add a 2nd acct to your tablet, and then dl it...

Wait a sec... so I can add my phone's gmail account to my tablet, download the app, then switch back to the tablet's gmail account and actually see and use that app? I didn't think you could do that.
No, you won't see it downloaded. But you won't have to pay twice - if you paid for an app on your phone and you have the same account on your tablet, you will be able to download it on the tablet as well without paying again - you'll see the app as "purchased".

you can add the acct to your tablet, dl whatever app you purchased. You can leave both accts on your tablet and choose 1 as your primary acct. You can have mor than 1 acct on your device. when you open the app store press your menu button and select "accounts" and choose which one you want to use.

Yep I used both the s2 and s3 sucessfully.....
There is also another topic explaining another method of replacing ur apn in the general subforum of the tmobile s3
As for the s2 there is threads for apns and then for user agents
Live throws a code stating that some items may not be available but playing and netflix green light
Updates you have to dl on ur pc then transfer it to ur xbox by disc, etc storage medium
I have also changed my dns servers but I can still use tmobiles dns and do both
I use to have a full live experience until the last 360 update and now something borked....nebody have ideas? Lol
So I should have no problem using my sensation as a hotspot to power my roku box to stream Netflix to my t.v. right? Thanks!!!
