Android Market - GiterMani - Galaxy S I9000 General

Has anyone noticed a new application in the Android Market under the "My apps" section called GiterMani?
I downloaded it by pressing the "Update" button before reading. Haha! Oops!
I then did a Google search and found this:
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&tbo=1&biw=2025&bih=1016&tbs=qdr%3Ad&q=gitermani&oq=gitermani&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=11675l12859l0l9l7l0l0l0l0l156l526l4.3
Is this a virus?
NOTE: I have since uninstalled an application called "Test account" because those were keywords contained within the Gitermani program and I did not recall seeing that in my application list before.
As a side note, there are many more articles about Android virus issues which I found after searching the Internet further. Anyone have any suggestions for an anti-virus application? I use ESET NOD32 at home but, unfortunately, it is not available for Android...

There is Lookout and I believe AVG as well. Lookout provides other services as well but the antivirus and antimalware protection is free.
Sorry about your luck bye, you should probably do a factory reset if you had a virus or trojan just to be on the safe side.

Apps always opening themselves

I'll shut down all apps in the task manager and then a little later I'll open it again and there will be a bunch of apps that just started themselves and ran in the background (apps that I didn't open myself). Dildroid would open itself every few minutes so I uninstalled it. "HTC Checkin Service" opens itself all the time too. I think there are a couple more that do it but I can't remember off the top of my head. Why is this happening and is there any way to stop it?
It is part of the design of Android.
When you install an app, it registers itself with the system and one of the options it has is to automatically start. There are several apps in the market (one is called AutoStarts IIRC) which can override this behaviour.
Note that Android is quite adept at managing resources, and will start kill unnecessary processes/tasks when it needs to. Some people (myself included!), believe that it is better to allow Android to manage itself, rather than using a task killer, but others absolutely swear by the efficacy of task killers.

Dave
Is there any benefit to allowing apps to auto start? I don't understand why they would need to, or why they would even want to start by themselves?

Is "AutoStarts IIRC" a paid application? Because I can't find it on my HTC Hero in Europe. Are there any alternatives? I would very much like to be able to manage the autostarts, since I have 3-4 applications that I haven't even launched yet, that always run in the background and hog about 50MB of RAM. Thanks

It's just called AutoStarts.
"IIRC" is short for "If I Recall Correctly"

Dave.

That makes it clearer Thought it was an acronym, even though I didn't recognize it, so I excluded it from my Market search. So I still can't find it there, I'm afraid. And the QR code on Androlib led to an invalid Market address... Hmm. Do you know of any alternatives?
Well, it is in fact a paid application like I asked. No wonder it didn't show up
you also need to be Root so you can disable/enable components!

Which antivirus is suitable for Elfin?

Which antivirus is suitable for Elfin? I google around found a few free and paid antivirus but always there are bad comments about them. Some of the bad comments like "drain battery, phone hang, out of memory, etc".
Or do we really need antivirus?
Check your CD from when you got your phone, I know on mine there is an anti virus on there, I haven't installed it though, and don't plan too. But that's just me.
I run anti virus etc on PC's obviously, if my phone has one, I hope that picks it up.
Hope this helps.
No Virus
Theres no virus for win-mobiles yet... so theres no need for Antivirus
captainstu72, the CD came with my Elfin don't have any antivirus.
hirencj, not only virus, but trojan or dialer. There was a trojan dialer threat some time back on a CS style of game (posted on XDA) which actually will call to a few international numbers at certain time.
The anti virus that came on my CD is F-Secure Anti Virus PPC 5.0 if that is any help. It insisted on installing to the Main Memory and took about 1mb of space.
Virus
As mentioned earlier, WM lacks any credible virus threat (even if a dozen exist they can in no way be called a regular threat)
There are anti-virus solutions from F-secure and McAfee,
but they will end up using a dis-proportionate amount of resources
on the phone. And generally are not recommended
You can completely eliminate the need for anti-virus program if you follow a few
etiquettes, Like avoiding downloading applications from untrusted sources etc

[Virus warning]Don't install Android Market Security app.

Just a quick word of advice for those of you who are feeling a bit icky due to recent viruses and malware in the Android market – don’t download the Android Market Security Tool. The version in the Android market is clean and straight from Google, but you do not need to install this on your own. Google will use this tool automatically whenever they do a security sweep.
There’s another version on alternate app stores with the same name and icon, but these are injected with viruses. Do not download these either, for obvious reasons. Your best bet is to let Google do what they do and if you’re still feeling a bit vulnerable, check out official offerings from Lookout, AVG and more. (Or just do extensive research and check permissions on the applications you do download.) [PC World]

I wonder if this will be highjacked and re-posted by someone again.....

*** virus

There is a virus inside elternal legacy HD (especially) and asphalt 6!
DO NOT DOWNLOAD THESE FROM ***!!!
It will take you to a fake gameloft survey where you say your country and favourite os, and when you touch "send", it says 'thank you for your donation' and sends infinite messages, charging your phone bill. The only way to stop this is battery remove or task killer.
I wasn't one of the victims!
That's why you should only download apps with descriptions and developer names
Thus, thou shall not use warez.
+1 yup.............
AVG android id's virus in GingerBreak?
Just by dumb luck, I had loaded avg pro on atrix. When blithlely following directions to load GingerBreak, received message from avg that program contains a virus and I conclude that either: 1. I had to unload avg and then load GingerBreak or 2. ask in this forum if this message is for real. Any and all responses will be welcome.
Thats the reason why i deleted *** from my Phone! There are so much Viruses, in which you will have to pay. If you want to be safe, buy them at the Android Market!
Regards
*** is down anyways now... so peace

The problem is that the android market is also not safe from viruses (although, probably more safe since it's monitored by Google and they can remotely remove malicious apps...).
I currently use lookout but wondering if there is a better antivirus.
How is AVG ? I'm using it on my desktop computer and like it but somehow got the feeling that it's too "heavy" for Android.
Morning mate,
You can use ESET. Has has now their own AV. EMS (Eset Mobile Security) You can grab it from the market, currently in a BETA stage but quite advance and very low footprint on any device. It's definitely on the same playing field as any awesome Antivirus/Malware prevention tool.

I used ESET for a while. I use it on my PC and my laptop, so when I saw it in the market, I got to installing it right away.
It slowed down my phone horribly and no matter what I did, I wasn't able to uninstall it (My phone was not rooted at the time). After trying everything I found on the web, I eventually got to backing up everything I had and factory reseting...
They've probably fixed that bug by now, but it was still pretty annoying...
Can anyone recommend any other Android anti-virus software? It has to be "good", obviously, but it also has to quietly run in the background, eat as little battery and memory as possible.
P.S. My device is a Galaxy ACE (currently rooted and with leaked Android 2.3.4 firmware)
On the PC I used and removed Eset. It was a real pain spending huge amounts of time removing junk deeply imbedded and left behind in the Registry. As such, I'd be hesitant to try Eset again especially on an Android device. Furthermore, I read where Eset used their own secret vpn to bypass any local firewall to get updates, without telling the user.
I am skeptical of reviews by AV publishers like McAfee, Kaspersky, etc. warning of "the coming horrible tsunami of Android malware."
If anyone comes across a detailed Android AV review, please post the link.
no warez discussion allowed.
I see, no one was actually advertising/ requesting or posting warez, so there will be no consequences.
but since this is not an issue for anybody, not using warez in the first place, this thread is closed. if you got yourself a virus this way, there are enough tips to get rid of it, but it is your own fault.
also, i edited all the posts containing the name of the warez distributer.

Apps with trojans - from Symantec

Hello.
Symantec has released a small list with confirmed "evil" apps in the market. These apps install a service named "apperhand", which is able to steal personel information from the phone. Please be advised that these apps contains trojans - not any viruses, to make that clear...
This is just for information - if anyone need to check it...
Direct link... http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/androidcounterclank-found-official-android-market
It seems like Google already has reacted to this, and removed one or more of the apps - i can see that iApps7 inc does'nt show up on the market...
Symantec has already done some backtracking on this story.
http://www.androidcentral.com/symantec-updates-its-counterclank-malware-claims
This is not directly related to the Galaxy S II. XDA has forums for discussing general information about Android, it's conveniently referred to as "Android General".
You can find a thread already discussing this there.
