It's hard to say. It could be either. Does the phone ever charge up at all? (when it's powered down?). If not, I would first try another charger cable, to rule that out. If that doesn't solve it, then I'd be suspicious of the charge port, and most likely take it in to sprint. A little more info would be good.

There is a known issue with Evo charger its referred to as -charging port durability by Sprint- take it to a repair store and if you have any issues ask if it is part of the above know issue. This does not apply if its been pulled out by physical damage.

Yes but when the phone is completely shut off and it's plugged in, does the charging light come on and stay on?

It's your charger more likely cus it happened to me with a cheap charger. So I think its your charger. But if your using a legit charger from like sprint/htc, then something is wrong. I only use HTC chargers.

This same thing happened to me, took it to a sprint repair center. They gave me a new USB cable and cleaned the port on my phone. Worked like new after that.

Does it do it on Factory UNrooted? If so, I'd say take it back to sprint while it's unrooted and on the factory stock rom and have them replace or fix it
I had the same problem with a refurb I got that replaced my original Evo. It worked fine for a week or two, then one night, I plugged it in as usual and woke up the next morning with a battery on the verge of dying. The charging light was even still orange when plugged in. I tried every charger I had (evo original, BlackBerry, Samsung, Sprint car charger...) to no avail. Charging with a wall adaptor and USB port on computer yielded the same lackluster results. It did this when rooted and not, with custom and stock roms, and didn't change with kernels. I ended up having to charge my spare battery with a wall charger for the battery and switch every hour or two. I went to the store and they looked at it and gave me 2 new batteries and a new charger (for palm pre) and tried to send me on my way. I plugged the charger into the wall at the store and showed the repair person that it was still losing battery while plugged in and "charging". Needless to say, I got another refurb right away that didn't do the same thing.
Bring it in to the store and get yourself a "new" phone. It worries me a bit that they might be pushing these refurbs out to stores a bit to quickly.

Okay I'm running dj05 modem on rubixs dl30 base last night my phone went crazy. My phone was not reading correct battery stats. I would plug it to charger and within a minute say full charge and the display would flicker while plugged up. So I wiped batt stats that didn't help so I wiped factory reset ans davlik cache. That didn't help so this morning I was going to flask eb01 and now Odin won't recognise my phone. Any help would be greatful.

Yeah def sounds like your cable now. You haven't used any other phones charger lately? This was the undoing of my samsung moment. It became incredibly buggy after using a bb charger one night. Can you attempt a restore or backup through cwm?

Good thing you posted...yank it quick. Big no no man...reboot and try syncing with the comp again.
You have to be very cautious of the aftermarket chargers and cords you use.

That's not a good sign then. Some aftermarket chargers will fry the ports amoung other things. Attempt a backup/restore and try it with an authorized sammy cord/charger. If that doesn't work then you may have bricked the phone.

If you have insurance then go thru TMobile, if not, you are screwed. Samsung will not help you or anyone that purchases their products. All you will get is a "software reset" along with a message that it "passed all functional testing"
Check the pins on the usb port on the phone and on the charger, I read someone having an issue and he had some dirt covering on of the pins inside the usb on the phone. Try cleaning them somehow without damaging...

Make sure your laptop is plugged in & charging as well, otherwise I don't think it will work.
Make sure you have the drivers installed as well. I read in the motorola site somewhere that the computer won't charge unless the drivers are installed. Also it charges much slower than the wall outlet does.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA Premium App
Usr USB 3.0 port if your laptop has one so it supplies more power. USB 3.0 will charge almost as fast as AC.

Just let it be. it won't turn on if the battery is below a certain level. Let it sit and charge and it will eventually turn on.
Here we go again.. Only the 1,500th time this has come up..
yes.. Have you been flashing ?
And if it stucked on bootloader you will need factory cable...
Or ..
You can buy a charge only cable just like me, from ebay.. Very cheap.. The phone can boot without even battery! That's why it can be charged if you stucked o bootloader!

I tought you returned the phone because of the locked bootloader and because its a bit easy to brick it.

I have a fascinate with this problem. Ive read everywhere and its a known problem by Samsung. But they don't give a **** to fix it. I don't know what to do to fix it. I've tried everything I can think of and then some. Its kind of annoying because if it ever reboots without a plug in around it won't start up, just sits on a charging screen.

I had the same prob it was due to the battery. I used a new battery and it booted fine. I got a new batt from amazon not a knockoff but a $17 in packaging sold by amazon battery. Check to see if the pink moisture indicator is showing on the battery.

I charged the phone in my car for about 10 minutes today with no issues. When I got home and went to bed, I plugged the phone into my charger that I've used forever; a Motorola charger that originally came with my wife's old BlackBerry. I use it because the cord is about 5ft instead of 3 which seems to be the norm these days.
I didn't look at the phone again for about 20 minutes. When I did, I noticed that the backlight was flickering like crazy and that the edges of the screen were bleeding. When I unplugged it to get a closer look, I freaked out. Over the next few minutes, the flickering went away and the bleed disappeared. I couldn't even get a picture or video of it. I got the OEM charger out of the box and am using it now with no issues.
Weird.

My phone flickers from bright to dim when I use my car charger. Most likely the cord's teeth to hold it in the phone are worn out/flush against the head of the charger. Replace the old cord with a new one and it should be fine.

Probably something to do with heat, as you were using a different charger.
Nexus 4 is glass after all, so it generates even more heat.
Well you have been lucky if you just use any charger around unless you are sure they are the correct voltage etc. They are all probably similar though seeing as they use the port that plugs into a USB. Still I wouldn't do it across manufacturers.

I always use different chargers. Mine are a mish mash of all kinds. They all usually output 5v and 1Amp or there abouts.
Living room - Sony charger with blackberry USB cable.
Living room - playbook charger
Bedroom - HTC charger with archos USB cable
Kitchen - Samsung charger
Work - HTC charger with Nokia USB cable
The playbook charger outputs 2Amps and that is fine too.
The only charger I have ever had and issue with on any phone is an LG one I got with an optimus 2x. That used to cause BSOD even on the LG.
Whether it voids your warranty or not, they would never be able to tell what charger you had been using.

Same thing happened to me, except on the stock charger but it has something to do with overheating. Mine is recovering, but took a while and is still showing some ghosting.
