Looks like some of the carriers have asked Google to block tethering apps in the market and Google is caving to pressure.
As a developer, there are a few "undocumented features" that have started to slip away from us lately as well (ex: permissions to kill data use, etc.)... beginning of the end?
Google has to make some compromises with the carriers to keep them happy, I get that. The better question is will the new Amazon app store care?

Unless every single carrier (the ENTIRE INDUSTRY AND ANY COMPANY THAT MIGHT CONSIDER JOINING) agrees, no...they don't.
Android sells.
Att wants to stop carrying an android phone?
Okay... (please, really)...goodbye att.

I agree, but even if the market removes the apps pretty sure the app can be found and used. Its anything to charge joe consumer more for less.

So.....let the market work itself out.
Whoever said they're going back to the iPhone...you're an idiot. iPhones got cracked down for this very problem long before Android did. Do you google search homework.
Seeing as how you are supposed to pay for tethering and you're not, this isn't all that different from posting warez here on xda. Just because xda takes down your link to the free spb shell doesn't mean xda is caving to developers. just because carriers want Google to take down, what, 4 or 5 apps that are giving people free things that they should be paying for doesn't mean that Google is caving.
I think it's overpriced, but tethering is a paid service on ALL carriers that provide it. That means if you're using it for free, you are stealing. It isn't caving if the carriers ask Google to prevent us hacked users from stealing from them.
People who aren't rooted aren't even affected. Now, if they ever start taking down Titanium Backup, kernel manager, rom manager, hdmwin, etc...then you might have a case. backing up your info, roms, kernels and hdmi mirroring are all FREE. Tether is NOT FREE. see the difference?
Who cares, the stock tethering app is hacked (for however much longer) so just use that. There'll be apks you can search for. Someone is gonna catch you doing it eventually.
Relax, they aren't pulling a Motorola and locking our bootloaders. THAT'S actually google caving.

This is fine and well in theory but bottom line, if Google wants to remain on top, they need to compromise with providers. I don't see 25 million subscribers jumping from vzw or att to Sprint for free tethering and android. From the point of view if a consumer letting the market work itself out is fine but from the perspective of the business who wants to turn large profits, its necessary make compromises to continue to do so.

You can't predict what people will do.
Christ, no one predicted android to do what it did as fast as it did.
Google doesn't have to do anything in regards to the carriers Wishes.
They have the lead.
They need to focus on things like full hardware acceleration (make android feel more "finished" ) and competetion with apple in regards to quality (and the selling of) apps.
Carriers aren't going to drop Android over this.
Maybe att or something...but again....please.

No, tethering is not a SERVICE carriers provide, it is an APP carriers sell. The SERVICE I pay for is "unlimited voice" and "unlimited data".
If a tethering app is "stealing", Open Office is "stealing" from Microsoft Office.

Cnet just put up a review of the Motorola Atrix, one of the most anticipated smart-phones. AT&T has blocked the ability to download 3rd party apps . "You can't install third-party apps" and goes on to say "No change of heart on third-party applications, as that feature is disabled on the Atrix."
Google's(andy rubin) response is to say let me market decide. I truly agree with this statement but when the carriers are in power (two year contracts) it doesn't let the market work. General consumers dont know know the difference between android phones. Consumer assume since they are getting an android phone, all android phones are the same. This blocking of 3rd party apps creates a bad user experience and users will blame android and not the carriers.

Looking on the slighter brighter side, CNET also said this (emphasis added):
Of course, you've also got your obligatory AT&T services--AT&T Navigator, AT&T FamilyMap, and AT&T U-Verse Live TV--on there, but for once, you can actually uninstall any of these apps if you wish.

It's not enough, but it's a start.
Side loading apps is such a trivial issue on any device, including devices on AT&T. Root not even required. So for the tiny percentage that want to do this (like rooters) the option is there.
No Third party software? No "FREE" bootloader? No reasonable laptop dock price? It really destroyed the purpose of open-sourced software.....I guess AT&T kills the fun of having an Android phone.....I went from "must have one" to "might have one"...sigh.....
My last 3 phones were not purchased from AT&T because of similar issues. AT&T modifies the phone to disable installation of anything not coming from their store.
I've been considering switching to a different provider because I find it very expensive to buy unlocked phones just to get them in their enabled state. I know I would lose the flexibility of using the phone around the world, but I don't travel that much.
Is Verizon doing this same thing on their phones? If not I may consider switching to them. How about Sprint?

As far as I know, AT&T is the only one of the 4 major carriers that blocks 3rd-party apps. As previously mentioned, getting around that restriction is extremely simple and does not require rooting the phone. The Sideload Wonder Machine, for one, is very easy to use.

Does anyone know how to bypass the carrier-specific Android market? I know that the apps can be submitted to the market for a specific carrier, so is there a way to fool the market into thinking the phone is on a different carrier?
Basically, I'd like to download some apps (AT&T U-verse, Google Car Home, etc.) that are blocked on Sprint's Android Market. I know you can find the apk's on XDA and such, but I'm wondering if there's a more direct route?
Might be a bit cliche but you can find those apps on some alternative market apps like applanet. I will not post a link to it here as that app leads to downloading copyrighted apps for free and is to the best of my knowledge illegal and frowned on my the majority of the Android community.

There actually is a tweak for changing the carrier Market sees so you can see more apps. Obviously that is NOT any kind of security risk since those are still MARKET APPS.
I don't remember off the top of my head but it had to do with downloading Gmail, since that's not normally something you can do from the Market. It was related to CyanogenMod. I hope that helps.
There are also plenty of good legitimate markets out there like AppBrain, which I much prefer to the regular Market for finding cool new apps.

Nice uneducated response... First off, those things in the market version are "ads" not "adds" and the word you are trying to use is "Since" not "Sense" Second, take some time and read the wiki on "Pandora radio" because you clearly don't understand what's what. Pandora was developed by an Indie programmer to use the Indie developed music genome project. The annual fee does everything the hack does, except it also increases the music quality AND pays the Indie developers and allows them to keep the service running.
The Pandora service costs money to run, and as a matter of fact it nearly shut down a few years ago because of that cost. The ads and fees keep the service running and I'm sure you want that. You do enjoy Pandora as much as the millions of others who rely on it for entertainment daily?
The fees that this Indie developer founded service asks for are entirely reasonable and you are circumventing them. That is something to be ashamed of.

This is a very naive response, and reflects zero understanding of the software business.
It costs money to bring you Pandora. They have 250 employees who don't work for free. 50% of their revenue goes to pay royalties. Not many companies would survive with 50% siphoned off the top.
Pandora doesn't care what you do or don't buy, it's the advertising royalties from companies who want to put Ads in front of you that matters to Pandora.
Pandora is already free with Ads (just like many of our apps) and the 40hrs/month limit can be exceeded for the princely sum of 0.99/month. Unlimited streaming media at home, in your pocket, or in your car for $1 a month. That's your definition of 'gready'?
Ad free Pandora One costs a grand total of $3 a month. That's 0.10 cents a day. They are not exactly emptying anyone's pockets for what they provide.
Six skips an hour? That is per station so having multiple stations makes it easy enough to keep the skip limit being much of an issue. The 'skip limit' is not to piss people off, it's one of the reasons they can continue to stream music the way they do.
It's not like Pandora is one of the 'evil empires'.
They struggled financially for years and had to fight the music industry to prevent ruinous royalty fees. As it is they pay the highest royalty rate of any other music stream (radio/satellite). It's only in 2009 that they knew they would be able to stay in business and not be put out of business by the traditional music industry.
And its not like they don't care about their customers. Last year they did a 50 city road show to get input from anyone who wanted to show up.

It's not a "money thing" in the traditional sense. They didn't give us a real clear picture of what's going on, but ESPN offers these messages free of charge to ESPN.com members, and Sprint is going to start charging their customers for each individual text message, regardless of having an unlimited messaging package. ESPN really isn't going to put up with it being "free," yet not free.

This was already going to happen, but obviously none of us knew. This is not the only service that it going to be affected. This is all on Sprint's end. They basically want and have raised the price on the companies that send out texts through their databases. The update above is not exactly right and really should be rephrased. They are not charging "us", but rather, charging the companies that send out the mass texts to subscribers of that paricular service.
T-Mobile tried the same thing last September. And VZW tried it in 2008 with a .03% increase for content related text services.
Here
This is something that is happening across all the carriers. I think it is just getting blown up because ESPN is a big name to throw out and really affects the masses.
I am like many above. I like getting my texts, instead of refreshing apps to get the scores. Not to mention that ESPN did a pretty good job getting the scores out pretty quickly. I installed the scorecenter app and hopefully it will fill the void.
Sprint speaks
In response to inquiries on the topic, Emmy Anderson, Minneapolis-based spokeswoman for Sprint, gave the following statement:
Sprint is partnering with many industry-leading companies to form the core of Sprint’s Solution Enabler Program.
These solution-enablers have direct access to Sprint’s APIs that are exposed through the new Sprint Services Framework.
Solution-enablers will also provide many of their own value-added services to help a customer deliver an optimized solution that meets their needs.
As the first wave of APIs, Sprint is exposing services such as LBS, SMS, MMS, geofence and presence as part of the Sprint Services Framework.
Many services will be provided for free such as presence, while some services will require Sprint to charge solution-enablers, aggregators and developers a fee to recoup our costs of delivering these services.
Sprint is not increasing the messaging or data fees consumers pay
Specific to SMS, Sprint will charge a per-message fee to aggregators and solution-enablers for SMS programs.
This charge is a cost-recovery measure designed to allow Sprint to continue to support the billions of SMS messages that are sent each year as part of mobile marketing campaigns, alerts, et cetera.

Huh, guess I thought texts like these were charged anyways.
Not sure why you'd need some texts though ... that sounds like some yesterday ish. Still interesting, though. Sorta.

See my post above yours. Seems we, the user are safe to enjoy unlimited text, Sprint and every other carrier are increasing their rates for corporations who send out bulk texts.

The way I read this article, Sprint is charging the content providers, i.e. ESPN, MSNBC, CNN, etc. more per message sent than before. Not the individual subscribers.

And it just goes to show how things get blow out of proportion without anybody doing proper research... I called it

Saw that... I knew there was more to this than what these articles were saying
Yeah, Semantics, I found the same article the same way, so all credit to the real OP, who isn't me.

Yeah, figured as much. Got the Twitter feeds and RSS feeds that I'm already on top of so this would be a non issue either way. Least in this camp. I remember getting caught up in some Sprint Football thing a few years back where I started getting slammed with messages that cost per message. It was funny, and maddening, for a minute. Guess I thought this would be similar. Text 'news' notifications seem so old school, though.

I saw this the other day, so absolutely ridiculous.
This kind of stuff makes me think of the Group/album Deltron 3030. Corporations running the universe.
Poop
And it is totally aimed at individuals. I don't see them catching let alone prosecuting the hacker deep in china stealing passwords.

It kills me that leaders of a state that is lagging so behind nationally speaking and has so many real issues to worry about spend their time passing laws that are of no benefit to the actual citizens of the state. Fricken' stupid.

I believe in free software, but this makes perfect sense on there side. If you are sharing your netflix password, then the company is losing out on money from those who you are sharing it with.

That's cool man but to make it "illegal", that's silly.
If Netflix determines that an account is being shared across multiple people then they are more than welcome to cut that account out.
However, to make it a crime, come on now!
This clearly only affects individuals, not hackers and crackers, as LyndenP said.
I don't completly agree with sharing a password. I really don't agree with this law or who is behind it. It won't be long before the RIAA is suing some kid cause he shared his netflix password with his brother.
Edit: I realize that was a stupid way of putting it, unless netflix starts streaming music. But I guess I don't know that they don't, I have no netflix. I live under a rock. Either way I'm leaving my original post original.

So its only in Tennessee right now correct?

Yes. But that doesn't make you immune. Look at all the mass lawsuits with stealing movies (kinda different but along the same lines). They can always find a way

it always starts somewhere....then spreads like wild fire.
So where is the line drawn? I mean I have my teenage kid with an android in the house. So I can get in trouble for sharing my password with her. LOL Or does it only matter after she is 18, or out of the house. Some strange laws.

That's stupid. I pay for Netflix and its on my phone, my girls, and my Xbox. All same account with same password. You know what's coming next; that 8 bucks a month is going to turn into like 20 because Netflix will probably issue fee's for each device lol.
It's one of those weird laws that don't make sense. Besides, this is in Tennessee.
Retards!

Same here, on my phone, my girl's MyTouch 4G, our 360, Wii, & PS3, I even let my g/f mom use it on her iPad time to time. RIAA is just ****ing greedy, I guess they didn't learn when they started overpricing the consumer on CD's in the 90's which lead to the Napsters & Kazaas & Limewires of today.
