Angrybirds!

This is under the dev part of the forum because I was going to see if someone could unpack the angrybirds.apk and remove the ad's from the game or if someone could post a early release download before the ad's were implemented. I love this game and I don't want to wait for Rovio to produce a non ad version...anyone?

AdFree, one of the best apps for a rooted phone.

That is stealing!!! Ads are there to supports the developers hard work! They deserve to make money and honestly they are even letting you download it for free, so either you wait until there is a paid version or just dont play at all.

You can just put your phone in airplane mode and the ads won't pop up.

You consider that stealing?....not really since they released the game without ads and then made ads for people to click on which I will never do and if you wanted to really think about "stealing" consider yourself a thief since you hacked your phone and are using apps that aren't approved from the manufacturer and running "illegal apps"...so w/e dude..I've been downloading music and apps off sharing websites like rapidshare since I was like 12 dude...they are stealing from us. These things shouldn't cost as much as they do ie: windows os and microsoft office its just ridiculous and everything else in the world and if that's what you think, like I already said you shouldn't root your phone.

You're not furthering any cause by being cheap. Also rooting one's phone is not piracy. Voiding your warranty won't land you in jail.

Didn't mean to cause such an uproar. The only reason I mention adfree is because you can download it straight from the market. And no you are not stealing the game is free. Period. Like someone said putting your phone into airplane mode gives you the same effect. I am not taking anything from the devs if there is no paid version alternate.

Stop killing android carriers

Cnet just put up a review of the Motorola Atrix, one of the most anticipated smart-phones. AT&T has blocked the ability to download 3rd party apps . "You can't install third-party apps" and goes on to say "No change of heart on third-party applications, as that feature is disabled on the Atrix."
Google's(andy rubin) response is to say let me market decide. I truly agree with this statement but when the carriers are in power (two year contracts) it doesn't let the market work. General consumers dont know know the difference between android phones. Consumer assume since they are getting an android phone, all android phones are the same. This blocking of 3rd party apps creates a bad user experience and users will blame android and not the carriers.

It's not enough, but it's a start.

Side loading apps is such a trivial issue on any device, including devices on AT&T. Root not even required. So for the tiny percentage that want to do this (like rooters) the option is there.

No Third party software? No "FREE" bootloader? No reasonable laptop dock price? It really destroyed the purpose of open-sourced software.....I guess AT&T kills the fun of having an Android phone.....I went from "must have one" to "might have one"...sigh.....

My last 3 phones were not purchased from AT&T because of similar issues. AT&T modifies the phone to disable installation of anything not coming from their store.
I've been considering switching to a different provider because I find it very expensive to buy unlocked phones just to get them in their enabled state. I know I would lose the flexibility of using the phone around the world, but I don't travel that much.
Is Verizon doing this same thing on their phones? If not I may consider switching to them. How about Sprint?

AT&T restricts third-party apps, which means you can download only from the Android Market - which is not AT&T's store, btw.
Is Verizon doing this same thing on their phones? If not I may consider switching to them. How about Sprint?

As far as I know, AT&T is the only one of the 4 major carriers that blocks 3rd-party apps. As previously mentioned, getting around that restriction is extremely simple and does not require rooting the phone. The Sideload Wonder Machine, for one, is very easy to use.

i know what your saying.but considering this is one of atts top o the line phones minus the bs tethering plan for laptop dock(totally ruined that for me by the way). im just hoping that the bootloader isnt crapped up im gonna wait a little bit on buying this till i know theres a way to custom rom the crap out of this phone so ya thats what im waiting on before i decide i want this phone or not if not owell there will be better ones later on this year im sure so guess we will see how this all works out

Yes i get that but im talking about common users. Common users will not use XDA or root there phone. Im also not talking just about just this phone. When carriers do stuff like this, it effects how people view android and its ease of use.

Common users aren't going to be side loading to begin with. If its not in the market they aren't going to care. If they care they can google it and find XDA or the plethora of other sites that detail the simple few step process.
i agree it shouldn't be an issue, it is and its an easy fix so I don't worry about it. Efuse is a bigger issue to development that this. If it does have efuse I won't buy it out of principal and I'll get an inspire.

Agreed. Anyone who wants to sideload can figure it out. Its probably the easiest hack you could possibly do on your Android phone.

And the Cappy always needs more! Here's to hoping the Atrix doesn't.
At least in the performance realm, it doesn't seem too need much help from hacks. Although I'm looking forward to seeing what can be accomplished...

This phone is a powerful machine to begin with. I will be happy once I can root just to delete any bloatware that I can't delete out the box. Sideloading will be nice too..
I just don't like the Motorola interface, launcher pro will be my first install..

As to my knowledge, the only tethering app they can track is the 3G Mobile Hotspot app preinstalled into your phone. There is a hack that allows people to tether using that app for free.

I"m pretty sure that any type of tethering will get you in trouble from what a lot of P3droid's writing states... Esp. since google can remote wipe/remove apps from your phone...I would assume carriers have some insight as well to what a customer is using.

Google's insight is from what you've downloaded from the market I believe. I still can't believe how blown out of proportion this rumor has become.

sorry didn't see the other thread... but how can they track an unrooted easytether app vs. the rooted wireless tether app? I don't doubt eventually one day this will all be true but I still think they have better things to do than to hunt rooted phone users down...

You guys apps have nothing to do with it, you can download tethering apps, they just don't work, therefore they cannot bust you on this.
What they will bust you on is the IPs you are accessing, easy ones will be like Windows Updates servers, firewall/anti virus update servers, Steam will be another big one...
There is IPs that you will be accessing on your PC that some of you guys can't deny will be definitive proof you are tethering, and I guarantee as hard as you try they will always have a way of figuring it out and there is nothing you can do, its a service you are required to pay for and they are going to make you pay for it.

see that's coming at it from a different angle & I totally get that... but I paid for easy tether & I'm not rooted I use it on my personal com... & it works perfect I just think that if there was a true issue w/tethering why not remove easytether or pdanet from the marketplace? just my 2¢

They cannot do this because no matter what Verizon, or any other carrier for that matter, wants us to pay for or does not want on the market, it is not their market. The market is controlled by Google and they will only remove apps that go against their policies.
Anyway we should all be aware that the android market is not the only source of apps for android. There is the Amazon market which certainly has different rules that Google's market, and there is Applanet which simply does not have rules or at least none that would keep tethering apps out (or a large quantity of others either). Also, the developers could simply post the apps on their website if removed. Therefore it would not be at all effective to remove them from the market

for once I agree w/jmoney... and we have yet to see evidence of any account suspensions our cancellations due to tethering... still waiting on some proof & tired of all the "talk" of this rooted hunting sprees...

What I have heard is that Verizon is not going after rooted users and to my knowledge are still taking the same stand against rooters as they have in the past. What they are going after are the people who use tethering without a tethering plan. They are only doing this because there are certain members of this community who use tethering for obscene amounts of data. These are the people who use 150gb or more a month and yes there are people who do that.
We need to remember that just because we can tether large amounts of data does not mean that we should. I saw the following analogy on an article online and I think it is an excellent way to think of this.
If you are in a supermarket and you notice that they are giving out free samples of something, there are two things you can do. You can just take one and everyone else can have one and there is no problem at all and they will continue to allow the free samples. Or, you could, since it is all free, take all of the samples for yourself and no one else will get any, and the store will stop providing them and everyone loses because you were greedy.
If we all just use a small amount a month, I'm very sure that there will be no problem with the carrier and we all can enjoy the exeperience

I am interested in a highly secure Rom for the evo. I would like it to be free of Google or anyother corporately monitored system. real opensource experience free of all this monitoring and tracking and data minning. Maybe with a nice user friendly firewall for all connections. how about built in 512 bit encryption. For private txt messaging.
Let's hear from the community on this.

I may be wrong but... Evo is an Android phone... Android = Google. I don't think you'll have much luck getting a Google free Android phone.

Umm don't listen to anyone who previously posted. You could easily use CyanogenMod with out Google apps to do this. You would be missing the market and any standard app that has the word Google before it like Google maps, but I guess now you could use the Amazon market anyway.

Actually i had a Samsung intercept that originally had Google android rom and ended up with a non-google phone in the end...... Accidentally flashed a radio from differnet phone and after no signs of Google ..... Or signs of really anything but made a great paper weight!

Finally someone smart in this thread.
Any ASOP ROM which doesn't include GAPPS like cyanogyn mod or deck's ASOP rom will do this (minus the sms encryption) as long as you don't flash the GAPPS add ons or enable my location.
I really hate when people act like experts, but don't know what their talking about.

I don't think you're going to find this for the EVO, although I imagine there's a phone out there somewhere that you can accomplish this with.

When you say free of google what do u mean?? Evo runs android, android is created by Google. There is no way you could have android without Google. If you mean Google apps, as someone else said just run cyanogenmod without GAPPS. You wont be able to do much, won't even be able to load apps that aren't preinstalled.

It wouldn't be anymore secure than the current version of Android being ran (which he mentioned and is apparently worried about).. but as far as all the 'monitoring and tracking' and what not, I mean, sure. But what would be the point? Seems like a pretty half assed Android experience.
There is only so much that can be done without the use of, say, GApps ... might get the job done but would essentially kill the idea of even owning said phone.

Obviously the OS is made by Google, but I don't think that's what he meant. I think he means a rom which won't constantly sync with google's servers.
Also, you CAN sideload apps without market or GAPPS installed, the trick is just to find the .apk files somewhere other than google market, but most are on either amazon market or Edit, so again another WRONG piece of info given out here.

Although I wouldn't do it myself, I can see the point. You would have way better battery life without the constant syncing. Also takes much less ram. Not everyone cares about sync with gmail, contacts, and calendar. Some just want a nice smooth OS. It would be more secure, because everything wouldn't go through google's servers.

Seriously? This is like asking for the competitor iPhone and not wanting Apple to make it. If you didn't want a Google phone then why did you buy a phone with software developed by Google? Please don't tell me you Yahoo'd your phone. That would just be an Epic Fail!

Actually it's more like having an iphone and not paying for mobile me. But in this case it's a better situation because you wouldn't have to register with google to get the apps (get them somewhere else as I suggested previously), like you would have to with apple.

I get the 'tracking' and what not ... but no one is really 'tracking' you. Recorded, maybe. But what does that even really matter in the end?
I get that you want to point out that it can be done, and others were wrong, but it was a silly question none the less.
And, sure, of course - less RAM. And no syncing? Could always disable. But freeing up RAM and what not? Running a smooth experience? It's not going to be that much smoother than should you elect to NOT use proprietary apps. It's not going to be a 'night and day' thing.
I'm more or less curious what the OP wants to do with his phone. Yeah, getting apps from other avenues is always a possibility ... sure. But getting apps from outside of the Market isn't going to offer less system stability, or smoothness, as opposed to getting them from the market.
Sure, I suppose it could be done ... but what are you trying to do? And, as said, it's only as secure as the latest version of Android ... which is constantly facing security issues.

NFL Mobile + root = no go???

So as some of you may already know, the latest update for the NFL Mobile app (came out this morning I think) has officially killed its functionality with rooted (or "non stock Android") devices. A story on Android Police can be see here.
At any rate, I saw a recent post on a GSIII forum (here)where the user claimed to have a workaround which, among other things, involved renaming the superuser.apk, however if you're using CM nowadays then you'll know there really isn't a separate apk - instead it is now integrated into the rom. That being said, does anyone have any idea similar to this that might work for tricking the app into thinking it isn't running on a rooted unit? I have no clue myself, but seeing as how no one has started a dedicated thread for this in the forum of the current Google flagship phone, I thought I'd get things started.

Well I guess it looks like no one has any ideas...? Oh well, a rare swing-and-a-miss for solutions in the xda community

A quick fix would be to just find the apk for an older version and install that one. That's what I'm currently trying to do, there's no reason for then to block us from using it just because we're rooted.

Well yeah, I mean I already uninstalled and then restored a backed up version of the app using Titanium Backup. The problem is - and if you've been a user of the NFL apps over the last year or two then you'll know this - that the NFL app is not like most apps where each upgrade just adds some incremental upgrades or changes. With this app the upgrades are typically pushed out right before the start of the key timeframes of the NFL season: usually an update right before preseason; another before the start of the regular season; another at the start of the playoffs; another right before the Super Bowl; and once more right before the draft in April. Each update is specific to that time period of the season and usually contains the critical information/tweaks/additions/UI alterations specific for that segment of the year. Point being, after missing an update or two, the app becomes extremely outdated and eventually useless. And that's why, in the mid-to-long term, just using the older version of the apk unfortunately isn't a useful alternative. Damn you NFL! Now we just have to hope the xda community will come to the rescue as they usually are able to do

Ooooh gotcha. I didn't realize that that's how NFL ran their app. That's really annoying.

i'm not rooted, but that does seem like somebody went off the deep end with this app. rooting a device won't hurt their revenue, in fact, it will probably increase it from allowing ALL Android (and iOS) devices access the app. instead, they're cutting off access to a HUGE chunk of their fans, present and future. in essence, they're biting the hand that feeds them.
i voted the app down in the app store out of principal alone.

I am extremely displeased with this as well and am searching for a solution. Leave it to Verizon to try to control how you use YOUR phone.

From what I gather there are two different versions - the one that comes on Verizon phones, and the one that anyone else can grab from the Play Store. I have the Play Store version (as a TMo customer).

Awesome, sounds good
Just in posting my thread I got a ton of hits of people freaking out about the new app...lol

FYI, they have fixed the app and it is now working perfectly fine on rooted devices strait from the play store

I might be the only one it's not working for. Wondering if anyone can help.
I cannot get 95% of the buttons to work in the Fantasy section of the app. Not only that, when I said 'to hell with the app' and went to their mobile site (which looks exactly like the app), I got the same thing... 95% of the buttons on the mobile site wouldn't do anything.
Now, on my N7, everything works fine.
Any ideas?
Edit: It was Ad Away. Can't use the app while it's running. Now I'll try to find the hosts file and see if I can edit the NFL entries out of it.
