[Q] Volume down bumper stuck. Hboot screen every reboot. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My problem is pretty clear in the title. Dropped my phone a couple weeks ago and my volume down bummper got stuck. Now when I reboot my phone it thinks I'm holding down the volume down bumper which brings me to the HBOOT screen. Problem is once I'm there I can't get anywhere else because it doesn't respond to volume up or the power button because I assume that it takes only one key press at a time. So this is my issue I'm wondering if I bring it in to t-mobile to get it replaced will they jump on me because they know its not the stock radio? Will they notice the S-Off, or will they care less and send me the new phone? Is there a way to just call it in instead of actually dealing with the t-mobile store?

That's a tricky one. You could attempt to take a small needle or something and pry the volume button in to place, but that could damage it further. You COULD try putting the PD15IMG.zip on your sd card, then boot up and see if you can get through the setup. As far as i know, you only need the power button for it. then you could try returning it. If that won't work, try doing it through adb/fastboot.

Issue with PD15IMG.ZIP is that I'm pretty sure you have to press vol up to accept the update

Can you file a warranty claim? It's obviously a hardware issue, so unless you can fix that button yourself, I don't see what else you can do.

You could try deleting the key 114 entry in all the key layout under /system/usr/keylayout, i think its in 3 different .kl files.
Edit* so you cant boot into normal right? Prob need to fastboot adb push the kl files into the system.

HD2 end/power button and volume up key do not work, what should i do ?

So I have this hd2 that I have to send by Monday to my brother. I bought this phone for 160 and I was told the end / power key does not work. There was also a pass lock on the phone. Now I could somewhat survive without the end button but I needed to hard reset or erase all memory from the phone to get rid of the password... but I can't do that because the stuck power button won't let me do that. I managed to get past the password via hspl, but I know also realized the the volume up button doesn't work either. Now when I said the end button doesn't work I meant that it wouldn't wake up when I press it, nor will it shut off... and when I put in the battery it turns on by itself, I don't even need to press anything. So I am guessing the problem is the flex cable is always pushed in... I cannot ship it to HTC because I flashed it and the warranty is gone, and every repair shop doesn't know what I am talking about.... please help me and tell me what to do this is very urgent.
I appreciate all the help,
Danny
i think the flex ribbon is damaged!
there are easy to source, try ebay
volume button, im not sure
Thank you for the help, but its to vague... I also heard its very tough to open the hd2
you can easily flash your stock spl via hspl2..just run it and select your stock spl.
stock rom and radio can also be flashed (you have to perform this before, because you cant flash via sd card).
take it to htc...wheres the problem?

Can't press Power button (hardware)

Hey
My power button seems to have failed on me. I press it but nothing happens and I leave the phone alone and it press itself. Something inside must have failed
Can I fix this myself? Not sure if I have a warranty on this phone anymore (never unscrewed but rooted and has CM running on it)
Hm can't say much. Did you drop it? Could there be dust and pocket lint in there preventing button movement?

Open your battery cover, does it say VOID?
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Seems like delayed response. Not a dead power button. Check how much ram is left on ur phone.

Strange, I just had this happen to me the other day! It ended up being dust/lint...
hopefully that's all it is for you as well!
My power button is also acting up. When I hold it down while the phone is on nothing happens. When I pull the battery and put it back in it turns itself on. It is rooted running the Andromadus Alpha v5, previously running ILWT CM7 where it was doing the same thing but I didn't figure it out before flashing the ICS ROM. What would happen if I took it to a T-mobile store?
Happening exactly the same, button doesn't react completely and if i remove battery start up automatically. But i drowned the phone before so probably thats why...
Happened to me. I ended up just remapping my trackpad button to the power button.
How you did it?

I'd love to know that as well
My power button broke a little while ago so I just sent it in for a replacement. I unrooted first to be safe.

The symptoms sound to me like the power button is stuck down, either the plastic button itself or the actual switch contacts underneath it.
Seems like it has auto fixed itself...........for now.
I edited the curcial-oj.ko file or whatever. Changed the key binding to POWER instead of trackpad click.
You can use adb to pull/push the file from /system/usr/keylayout. Reboot after pushing
keep in mind this only affects the android os, so you still need to be able to turn on your phone without using the power button (can't use tp to power on phone)

Check SPL problems

Awesome guides! No doubt about that. I'm not a complete noob but I am new to the HD2 and I feel stupid bc I can't get past the first step I am frustrated cuz I have been looking all over for ways to check SPL my trio screen that everyone talks about is not coming up. Idk what to do. I've done the volume down with power button and also tried pressing the reset button in the back just to see if it works. I boot into Windows to make sure the volume down works and it does.
I have the tmobile version Leo 1024. Any suggestions.

Pull battery, press volume down and hold, push power and hold both. Tri color screen should be there.

Like everyone says. Volume down + end key.
Hold the volume down until the tri-color screen shows up.
I know you've said that.. just make sure you continue to hold volume down
Maybe that will help.
thank you guys but idk why it is not working but i finally managed to get it to bootloader by trying to install hspl3 it automatically sent me to the bootloader screen. After it said "we hacked it" i rebooted and tried to see if it would work with the typical hardware button
voldwn + power button and then let go and it still does not work.? :/
ps . i let go of power button but kept holding the voldwn and still did not work.

You are completely turning off your phone and then doing this to power it up right?

Yes and so I started following your guide to install clk since I know that I at least now have hspl3 installed and in the part where you task29 I followed instructions successfully flashed. Everything is going well until you say to reboot into boot loader mode by removing battery and voldwn + power. I try it hoping it would finally work and it doesn't.
Make story short my phone is stuck at the "stick together" screen. I tried getting into boot loader mode by running the hspl install program but bc is stuck on the screen comp is not able to recognize phone. Am I bricked?

Nice, real slick move,, you can't get into bootloader, yet you still decide to go ahead and wipe the OS, so now you have a non booting phone and no access to bootloader.
That's a handsome if totally useless lump of glass and plastic you have there!
JTAG, or sell for spares. (Well, after trying everything you can think of, but all I can think of is freezer trick, but its a loooooong shot. )

what is jtag and whats the freezer trick? is there any other way to get into bootloader mode maybe with sd?
Im willing to open the phone and remove or unplug a strip to completely erase any stored data and hope that it boots into bootloader?
SOLVED!! hope this helps someone else
i got it to work. My god there are soo many ppl with this phone soo many threads and post not sure if thats a good or bad thing lol anyways out of all the searching I found this guy to have had the same as me and he solved it. It was impossible for me to ever i mean EVER boot in to the trio color screen or bootloader what ever its called using the hardware buttons even tho the hardware buttons do work. I was able to get into bootloader when comp and phone sync and I used the hspl3 program to boot the phone when it was fully on the win mo stock.
Anyways I just followed this :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10644926&postcount=4
I opened up my hd2 (unscrew and removed the back panel) and disconnected the connector flex rigid board (A board) of the hardware keypad from the mainboard….and pushed the battery in and pressed reset (sometime u need to plugin the usb cable to wall charged/pc to wake up the phone) and held volume down key and hopped for some miracle.
Viola saw the tricolor screen after eternity – since the back panel (not backcover) was open I help the battery to the pins and didn’t even move my fingers …run the stock rom installation and held the battery tight in place and waited to get the rom completed…the moment its 100% relaxed my fingers and reconnected the flexboard connector, re-assembled my phone and everything was back to normal.
I also used these pages for reference on parts:
http://www.ifixit.com/pdf/ifixit/guide_5919_en.pdf
http://pocketnow.com/hardware-1/official-htc-hd2-disassembly-assembly-training-videos-leaked
ps. no need to take the whole phone apart. I believe you are disconecting the AP FPC from main board which is connected to your hardware buttons if I am correct.
Edit: I want to give credit to kylew1212 for walking me through the rest of the installation of my android.
Interesting, good job.
i have a lot of sympathy for his viewson peace

[Q] Going back to stock.

Hi, been trying this for a long time now. I need, for warranty purposes, to return back to stock from nand android. Unfortunately i can't get to bootloader, the tri-color screen. My phone boots directly to Magldr. My phone on/off key is broken and i need it to get to the tri-color bootloader.
My question is, if there's any way i can get the stock winmo 6.5 rom flashed from magldr. USB Flasher, or by CWM, NAND Toolkit, or any other trick so that i can get it to repair?? PLEASE BEFORE ANSWERING NOTE THAT I CAN'T GET TO BOOTLOADER, I DON'T HAVE ON/OFF KEY AND THAT KEY IS NEEDED TO GET TO TRICOLOR SCREEN
My microphone is failling and the hard keys also... need them fixed.
Thanks.
You don't need the on/off keys to go into the bootloader, just the volume down rocker.
Press & hold it, then boot up the device.
Tried it a million times... it's a no go!!! It doesn't work, try it on your HD2, push the volume down and reboot the phone by taking the battery out and back in, or by pushing the reset button. That the only way i can reboot my phone. You need to shortly press the on/off button to get to bootloader.
Okay, try to install Android. After that, from within Android reboot your phone using "Reboot" option . And while it is rebooting, keep the volume down button held.
]P.S[ I just tried rebooting from within android, and then holding the volume down, WITHOUT EVEN TOUCHING THE POWER BUTTON and it went directly to the bootloader. Are you sure your volumes are working ?
You have MAGLDR installed. Power off your phone and connect charger with Vol. down button pressed. Your phone will start in bootloader.
I guess my volume keys must be down too... they work on magldr, they work on android but i can't seem to replicate what you guys are saying. But there's no way i can do this from usb flasher inside magldr?? or inside cwm?? or with nand toolkit?? without having to be in bootloader?
Those are some solutions I have been able to gather from various threads, with the same problem :

Okay try this :
Remove battery,
With left hand press and hold volume down,
With the other hand you put the battery back in and press AND hold the power button, so power and volume pressed and hold, wait until you see the bootloader.
This will work (at least it worked on my phone 1min ago)

Some times, Bent Battery Pins can cause unpredictable issues (However, I have not seen one like this.).
You may want to check your battery pins, straighten them delicately if they are (even a little) bent.
You could try sd card flash method?

There is nothing in MAGLDR that can make your HD2 go into bootloader. The only this.g that can get you into the bootloader besides the external hardware buttons is the bootloader.exe that can be run from inside Windows Mobile. It can only be run from inside Windows Mobile. MAGLDR is a custom bootloader that runs after the HSPL bootloader and has no way of communicating with the HSPL bootloader.
At the OP, you may have a faulty volume button ribbon that is causing you not to be able to boot into the bootloader. Check out this thread you will see what I mean. Read post #10

I had the same problem ...
I could not enter the bootmanager in android brief button press to end a call, we moved the menu to shut down, reset, etc, the same menu that appears when you hold down the button longer to stop calling ...
This defect appeared to me after I lay HD2 due to large changes in ambient temperature ...
After a few days of research, opening, drying I removed the defect, so I pulled out and cleaned the keys below the screen (Home, Menu, Back, red and green) and wipe the foil that these pressures are the same buttons ...
My HD2 has been working for 2 weeks with no errors

It seems my phone has a little more problems than i tought. I got another HD2 with a broken digitizer, but i can reproduce what you are saying about the volume key down,no need of on/off button. I guess i have to get the courage to open up the beast.
Thanks for all your help guys.

by the way, it's not possible either to flash radio also if i can't get to bootloader??
flashing with fastboot, and .img files and what not is just for android based devices right??
Correct.
If you can't get to the bootloader, you can't flash anything.
Fastboot is only for Android.
I understand that if you are getting the phone serviced directly by HTC, they won't have a problem with you having Android on it. Buy, if you are going through your service provider, that may be a problem.
good luck
I've been to HTC service. They didn't repaired the phone claiming that there was a non original software on the phone and there was water between the digitizer and the screen. Even though none of the stickers were showing red or pink or other color than white.
In fact there is something trapped inside but it may be alcohol. I had an accident with the phone on a boat. Got wet by a wave and it must have gotten to the phone too that was inside my "purse" (it's a man purse ok?!? those bags that we guys use to carry stuff!!). I didn't noticed and instead of taking the battery at once i tried to turn on the phone... all hell brake loose. I then toke the batt of, and let it rest for a couple of days. Then burried it in rice to absorb the moisture. Then read that alcohol could "push" the water out, and splashed some near the hard keys because they didn't work and i thought that may have been salt water, or salt crystals blocking my keys.
Concluding, the phones works with a few limitations. The only keys that work right is the call and the windows keys and volume keys. And my microphone doesn't work right too. People can only barely hear if i speak directly to it and shout, and still they hear me in the bottom of a well.
I've bought another HD2 on ebay, with a cracked digitizer. Was thinking of maybe taking it for parts, since mine is in mint condition. But i might replace it's digitizer and repair the two phones. I'm only affraid to open it up because it looks very, very difficult.
Thanks anyway for all your support.
Hello, i´m an electrician and i have an idea.
Important is to dry it completely before put the Battery in.
I have opened some "normal" earlier Cellphones (not Touchscreen Phones) and cleaned it with distilled water.
It seems to be impossible to get the functions of the Hardkeys back without open your Phone.
You may try to flush out the corner of the hardkeys with distilled water to remove possible contamination with crystals or minerals that could cause block the keys.
I remain this would be the last chance before opening the phone.
i can not say what happens when you do this, normaly the componets have no problem with water, only the microphone and the cable connection can hold the moisture for a long time.
I hope i could have helped you with this idea. Please be careful it will be a risk the Digitizer is also in the bottom right corner.
if you don´t want to take the risk bring your phone to a independent (not HTC or Service Provider) Phone doctor.
excuse my bad english

Phone wont boot [Goes directly into HBoot]

I woke up this morning and my phone will not boot. It automatically boots into the bootloader (hboot) and the up/down (volume keys) wont move the cursor to allow me to get to the recovery option. Also if I try to boot into recovery using the hard button combo it vibrates 3 times and the led turns to green, then it just sits/never gets to recovery. Since hboot is looking for the PDimg file I figure I could use this file to revert to stock but I was hoping someone here might have a better answer.
If not can someone let me know how to go about flashing with a PD15img file and where I can find a copy?
Thanks guys
Sounds like your volume button is stuck
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
Nope because it knows when I'm using them to try to go straight to recovery also the power button cannot be used to select either but it works to turn the phone one. They just stop working in hboot.
A constantly pressed button will of course also react when you're trying to boot directly to recovery. The phone doesn't "know" anything.
Another option is a stuck trackpad.
If all else fails you might try to reflash recovery and or Hboot, it never hurts to try from a clean install.

I think you guys are misunderstanding the point. This has nothing to do with the buttons. My issue is when I turn my phone on (by hitting the power button once) the phone will only boot into hboot. Once in hboot none of the keys (power or volume) work. If I try to boot directly into recovery by holding vol up/down + power; the phone will viberate 3 times and the LED lights up green. It then just sits on a blacklit black screen and does nothing else.
I am looking for eirther; Anyone that has ever had this issue and may be able to shed some light onto why it happened. Which by the way was completly random, I shut the phone off before going to sleep and woke up too it viberating like crazy then when I tried to turn it back on; this is what happened.
Or the answer to this question; How do I install a rom from hboot? Can I just install any rom as a "update" by using the method of naming it PD15IMG? Since it does search for this file when I have a sd card in at boot. But if my memory serves me correct it will ask; "Would you like to install this update?" and if my hard buttons do not work and I cannot click yes than what else can I do?
Thanks for all the help guys!!!!

And I think you can't read. You've been told in 3 posts that the phone boots directly to HBOOT because EITHER A VOLUME DOWN BUTTON OR A TRACKPAD BUTTON IS STUCK, ON ELECTRICAL LEVEL - THE CONTACTS ARE ALWAYS CLOSED. And THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT ON SOFTWARE/FLASHING LEVEL. You need to fix what's broken, and you've been told what's broken. Patience isn't one of my skills. Good luck from here.

I do thank you for your help but you may want to aquire some patience if you plan to continue helping people... since people in need of help are most likely confused.
Thanks though :highfive:
Im my experience Jack_R1's answers are always right and are the answer to your question. If you think otherwise one of two things is happening.
1) You did not explain your problem thoroughly.
2) You need to examine his post(s) more closely.
He has zero tolerance for stupidity or ignorance due to laziness (i.e. not searching). I'm not trying to speak for him or defend him or anything else. He's grown and quite capable of handling all that. The man just knows the answer and gets to the damn point.
I wish we had more people around here like him.
