Does not want to connect to kies, no idea why, the drivers seem to install.
Can't root it
Uninstall your current kies and then download lies from Samsung website and reinstall. This fixed the issue for me.
hmmm... I installed the latest version dowloaded from sammy site,
are you saying i need to re-install the software a few times and everything will be ok...?
Golly gosh.
Yeah also just tried that, it just gives me "Cennecting..." top left corner of Kies, and then it just stops trying to connect, hmm, also tried Win 7 x84 through virtual desktop. hmm
Double check that usb debugging is disabled. I had the same issue and this sorted it.

Did you uninstall the previous version?
Yes I did, it just doesn't want to connect, and I have the debug mode on, since I'm trying to connect the phone while in download mode.
Odin3
I get
"<ID:0/008> Added!!
<ID:0/008> Odin v.3 engine (ID:8)..
<ID:0/008> File analysis..
<ID:0/008> SetupConnection.."
OPENED superoneclick
pressed root, gives me two OK's and the "waiting for device" and freezes up.
And that's it.
(also tried a simple connect to kies without debug mode, main part of phone, does not connect, after uninstalling old soft and installing new, after reboots)

I want to go back on my desire....
Can i ask if you are using touchwiz? Or a third part launcher?

yeah touchwizzy (bag of poopy)
on the phone it actually says connected, when debug is off. arrrgh piece of...
are you sure youre using a USB DATA cable? i had an issue like this for a month, found out my cable wasnt good, make sure its a data cable, and that its working, can you get mass storage working? if you cant the cable is probably bad
I got mine to work after getting it from phones4u I simply had to unmount, remount the sd card and format it. Since then everything seems golden.
Hope this helps
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH help I'm having exactly the same problem, can anyone help?!
I solved the problem by unistalling samsung driver's from windows device manager..
Open kies , and connect the phone again, stop the phone from installing drivers automatically. Open tools on kies and install drivers manually
Should now work.. Make sure usb debugging is off all the way.

How do you stop the phone from installing drivers automatically?? Thanks
This is driving me up the wall. I've tried installing the drivers manually using Kies but although my phone appears as a connected device in Kies I can't view anything that's on the phone and I can't transfer files onto it!! Any ideas anyone?!

As the little pop up comes up on the notification area of your taskbar.. click on the notification and there is a install manually option. or something similar offering to stop the automatic install(Sorry, I can't remember exactly what it says); but that option exists
You uninstalled the Samsung drivers from device manager?

I found that mine wouldn't connect even though I had the latest Kies and had installed the drivers through Kies.
I found that simply by unlocking the screen on the device is began the connection process correctly and would connect fine. If the phone is slept with the screen off it won't connect for me.

I have tried this on both Win7 32 and 64 to no avail. I have tried different drivers, different versions of Kies, but I can never get Kies to see my TMO Vibrant. Not sure what else to try.
Same here. I don't know why others got it work. -___-
You need touchwizz to be running for it to work so if your using a different launcher switch back to tw and then give it a go.
Using Home Switcher I switch back to TW, I get the MTP screen on the phone for a few seconds and then it returns to the home screen. A dialog box on the computer says:
Device driver software was not successfully installed
MTP USB Device XFailed
I've had the same problem, when I plug my vibrant in and have the usb set to kies, it gets stock on the "initializing" screen on my phone. It locks the screen and nothing works. I have to reboot my phone every time. I've tried downloading all the latest software and drivers from samsung's website and still no luck.
Very frustrating.

When o boot my pc on safe mode the htp installs but once i go to normal mode it wont.
try this
Restart your computer
Tap the F8 key after your computer initially powers on.
Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu you can stop tapping.
Select the option that says ‘Disable driver signature Enforcement
That didnt work for me. Hopefully works for someone else
Try these drivers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
I recommend using odin to update if you can. I never thought I would prefer odin over anything until I used kies.

I get this (attached pic).
I've tried reinstalling kies and drivers several times.
Edit: The Samsung Android USB Modem eventually fails too.
I'm having the same issue. I'm using the stock firmware with the TW launcher and i've tried the USB drivers listed in the forums. Nothing seems to remedy this issue.

I am currently doing the install. Just install KIES and now installing the USB drivers I posted above. I am using Windows 7 64bit.. Then I'm gonna plug in my phone in KIES mode. If all goes well I will TeamViewer to everyone who have the issue here and try to help you out. Anyways wish me luck! Got a samsung interview in the morning so I'll be going to be in 2hrs..
After half an hour trying I have just found a working solution how to connect your SGS in Kies. Here is the deal:
Start Kies, put phone's USB settings in Kies mode. Connect your phone to the PC. Wait until MTP App show "Connected". Go to your PC's Device manager, find Portable Devices and select Disable on GT-I9000. Do not wait for the disabling process to be completed, just disconnect the USB cable. Now connect the USB cable again, wait the MTP App on the phone to show you the message "Connected" and choose Enable on GT-I9000 in Device Manager. After a few seconds your phone should be ready in Kies
I tried this both on x86 and x64 Windows 7 and it works for me.
I hope this will help! And I hope there isn't another thread with this solution. If there is - I'm sorry
i cant wait to get home and try this... another 10h to go
but if this helps ur a geniues

Will put this in the FAQ if we have some confirmations for its effectiveness
when i first bought my phone it worked with kies, but after flashing it to a different firmware there was nothing i could do to get it to connect. i had deleted drivers, re-installed, etc etc but nothing worked. what ended up working was putting the phone in download mode, plugging in the usb to both phone and pc, then putting the phone into recovery mode, and as soon as the recovery menu popped up my device was recognized and the correct drivers were reinstalled and all was fine again

If you still have this problem, please try my method and tell me if it works
I had issues and I also tried this method. But it didn't help
Last thing I tried was to format the internal SD. That did the trick for me....
The biggest problem with getting the phone to connect to Kies is two fold:
1) MTP application will ONLY launch from the home screen (touchwiz screen). NOT from any app. drawer / launcher screen
2) If USB mode on the phone is set to Ask on Connection, MTP won't launch due to the USB app. being open (see 1) above)
If you set USB to Kies mode and then ensure you are on the home screen of the phone with nothing else running, Kies WILL connect
Also remember the 16+ size extension bug.
So a full wipe on ur I internal sd card is a good solution just make sure u back it up tour hdd
I also did a "Driver recovery" from Kies and it worked after that. Although MTP driver failed to install for me in this case.
Make sure to update to the latest version of Kies ( Now 1.5.1.0074.45 ) as this version seems far more reliable when connecting the phone
I recently discovered that the culprit of Kies continuously trying to connect to phone was caused by wrong MTP driver selected.
Under WinXP
After phone connected in Kies Mode..Go to Device Manager/Portable device..
If you see a device labeled as "MTP xxx or Portable device.." ,wrong MTP driver or older driver has been used..For my case, a Microsoft 2004 MTP driver was selected.
To fix it.
1) Do a manual driver update..for my case ,i let the driver wizard to search automatically..this round, another newer Microsoft driver was found..in fact 2 of them.. after installing the drivers(Microsoft 2006 MTP driver,2 are listed..). .Now Device Manager/Portable device listed "GT-i9000" ,Kies immediately found my phone.
Driver name that worked are "wpdusb.sys" and "wudfrd.sys" found under \windows\System32\drivers\..

Probable Fix for Kies
Friends,
I have also faced the same problem (while connecting my SGS via Kies MTP was crashing). It used to work earlier so I started to remove Applications and data in the reverse order of Installation. After I removed "Dolphin Browser HD" and all saved bookmarks it started working.
This may be a probable solution if you also have Installed Dolphin Browser.

India.
2 different issues.
MTP crashing on phone is independent from Kies on PC cant detect phone.
i couldnt use kies either but i wasnt worried as i hardly have free time now..
this was a simple fix and now it workes perfectly for me.
sorry about the late replay.
thanks

You might be interested in my little APK (SGS Toolbox). I first created it to have it read the product code from the nv_data file to allow you to check whether it has been modified after a firmware update. But now I added some extra options, of which one is the option to check whether there are new firmware updates available in KIES by issuing the same request KIES does when checking for new firmware. This way you don't have to connect your phone to your computer all the time to check for new updates in KIES. Note: It sends JM1 as the current firmware version to find the latest. I might send the actual phone's firmware version once I figured out how to find it. See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=778244
Thanks, I'll give it a try
Deleted. Wrong thread.
after the last few days of kies craziness with everyone flashing last update, I thought I would give it a go, having never used Kies to flash before.
Anyway I plugged in phone no firmware update, done a search, so thought i'd try older version of Kies to try the registry hack, anyway, long story short that didnt work and having uninstalled and installed kies several times my pc just stopped picking up my phone completely driver would not install.
Again tried everything deleting drivers etc uninstalling kies and starting fresh but nothing, I now have latest kies but no USB drivers are installed and have no idea what to do, my pc will not pick up phone even in mass storage mode the drivers wont install.
I have since managed to update phone to JPA using pc at work, but still need pc at home working, I have tried all installations with antivirus off incase some asks..
so anyone please..is there anyway to get everything back to the way it was with kies and USB drivers all installed and working??
System restore your pc.

Tried that as well, didnt make a difference, tried manually installing pointing it towards downloaded driver, no luck.
This has worked for me several times.
Problem - Kies stays in connecting mode forever.
Reason - Think I once had Odin and Kies open at same - seems to mess up drivers and connection.
Solution:
1. Make sure Odin is closed.
2. Put phone into download mode.
3. Start Kies with phone connected to PC in download.
4. Leave it to install drivers. This may take a few minutes, be patient)
5. Disconnect phone from PC and reboot
6. Ensure USB debugging mode is off
7. Ensure nothing is running on phone and you are on home screen
8. Connect phone to PC and run Kies
9. It should connect.
This has worked for me several times.....I hope it works for anyone having this problem. If it doesn't please don't flame me. If it does, please hit the "thanks" button.
Best of luck!
What worked for me was using the default TwLauncher instead of LauncherPro. Don't ask me how this fixed my problem, but it did!
Also make sure Bluetooth is off and no apps are running in the background (use the built in Task Manager for this)

The problems most people appear to be having connecting to KIES are with standard phone setup after dabbling with Odin. I first encountered the connection problem after forgetting to close Odin and opening Kies, even after reinstalling drivers. Hence me connecting my phone in a few different modes to see if drivers got sorted...and it appears they did !
I really hope my solution helps others out too
Hiya. Been reading and trying these solutions.
My wife's SGS2 will not connect to Kies no way no how. Tried all of the available solutions. It will not connect to NPS either, although NPS sees the internal and external storage and media but not the phone to be able to upgade to Android 4 which is supposed to be out this week on Orange.
Any help appreciated.
I am using windows 7 Ultimate and the phone is stock orange

Try that:
You can use this software to repair Your dead Samsung i9505 and similar (m919, i337, L720 etc)
Note, You need to install QHUSB Qualcomm drivers first.
After flashing with this software, You need to flash phone with official firmware and PIT file, otherwise phone will be dead again, and You'll need to repeat the process.
If You get errors reported by this software (command prompt window), You'll have to replace the eMMC chip first.

Try a different data cable it worked for me
Sent from my GT-I9505 using xda premium
Well I've had some problems too today and there a couple of things you might want to try (I'm sure one of them will fix it):
- Pick a different USB port (preferably one in the back)
- Try a different USB cable (I used one from my Nexus 7, didn't work. Tried with the original S4 cable, worked)
- Uninstall Kies and the Samsung drivers from you control panel -> programs
- Download the Samsung USB Drivers again (google it) (do not install them yet)
- Download and install USB Deview (google it) and delete every driver of Samsung you come across in the list (just right click and click delete)
- Disable your internet access and reboot
- After rebooting install the Samsung Drivers (without an internet connection)
- Plug in your phone after you've installed the drivers and enable USB Debugging
- Reboot
- Enable your internet connection again
- Try to flash again in Odin (it should work now)
If this won't work, I don't know what will. A different USB port, cable, fresh/original drivers (not the ones Windows Update may try to install for you), etc is probably what you'll need to get it working.
thanks for every ones help we installed a fresh copy of windows 7 and installed every thing again and it worked fine defo must of been driver related
Cheers now flash away like there's no tomorrow
