So, I was finally offered the 1.8.3 update from the glorious AT&T, OTA. My Atrix is currently rooted on 1.5.7 with Gingerblur 2.5 installed, as well as the HUSPA radio mod. I went to download the 1.8.3 udpate with no problems. Here's where it gets interesting... when I went to install the update, my phone rebooted as expected, but when it came back up with the little android installation logo and the progress bar, after about 25% I get a spinning traingle with a exclamation point in it and the install freezes. I did a battery pull and tried the install again, but same results. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Does it have anything to do with my phone being rooted? Any comments/suggestions will be appreciated.

IIRC, you cannot install OTA updates while on GingerBlur as your OS is modified (root shouldn't matter, it is the fact that GB is DEODEXED). You will need to flash back to stock and update.

I got my OTA update today, unfortunately something went wrong. I told it to install now, and the screen with the android and caution symbol showed up. After 10-15 minutes I hit the power button. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to wait for that screen to clear or if that screen wasn't a good sign. Well hitting power took me to recovery and said that there was an error with the install.
What did I do wrong. Was I just supposed to wait longer? I had previously rooted my phone with unrevoked, but was running the stock ROM, should I have unrooted it? Was it some other error?
Any insight into what happened so when the update comes back around I can do it right. Also is there anyway to get the OTA update back, or do I just have to wait patiently again.

You can not update a rooted phone. Go to my post on updating 2.2 made easy and you canupdate to 2.2 and reroot the phone. This is the OTA update.
I'm sort of in the same boat. I had rooted with unrevoked and was running cyanogenmod. I reverted back to stock (retaining root). I received the OTA notification, it downloaded and started installing, but showed the <!> with the android.
I thought...ok...I'll return back completely to stock (no root) and now I'm sitting waiting for another OTA notification.
It's been three days now, and still no notification. I've tried checking for updates so many times that I've lost count.
Does anyone know whether or not a failed update gets another OTA notification? -or- why the software shows up-to-date when it's still at 2.1u1?
Thanks
Either take it to Verizon for them to push it onto the phone or use one of the methods here.

Hello all,
I am usually a reader of this forum, first time post. I have done a search on this but I can't get it to install.
My current phone is running Froyo 2.2.1 system version 2.3.340. I have rooted it with the Z4mod root version 1.3.0.
Now, when I saw the update come down I uninstalled all my root applications and removed my root from my phone. It downloaded in no time flat. About 11 minutes yesterday morning at 9:49AM. (first attempt) And then I started the install and it shut down correctly and turned back on. When it turned back on it did what it was supposed to, had the unbox with android icon. The load bar gets to about 35% then the unbox changes to the triangle with the ! in the middle. Then it boots up Froyo and states the install failed. I attempted about 5 more times then said lets see what verizon says. This was probably the worst thing to do cause they did jack. The store I went to had 25 bricked droid X's yesterday. I was the only one to just have it fail and Froyo to work correctly. To quickly shorten this story they refused to assist in installing Gingerbread.
Any Ideas on getting it installed?
Try wiping data through stock recovery and if that doesn't work, you could try an SBF
Thank you for info. I ended up SBF'ing the phone. Says I need to re-activate the phone because there is a blue triangle next to the signal bars.
I know this is probably a repeated question but how do i re-activate the phone. Do I need to take it to Verizon?!
NVM, figured it out.
same thing happened to me. however i did not remove my z4root on froyo. install failed. did not try sbf, was hoping i wouldn't have to.
biggest reason ive found thus far amongst several different threads/ and friends with droids, root really didnt have much to do with it, as long as you were unrooted again the update went well, bloatware seemed to be the issue. myself i had uninstalled a lot of dumb memory eating stuff while i was on froyo such as the nfl and nfs games, blockbuster app so on, when i pulled the update originally it didnt detect that so it fubared me on getting the ota update. sbf the way to go, im so in love with my DX for being idiot proof atm i could dance lol
Received the update notification this morning, happily started downloading and installation.
Like some out there, the tablet rebooted and it seemed to install but up to about 1/4 progress it froze with a central honeycomb logo with exclamation mark. Thought it was part of the process, left alone for an hour but nothing happened, hence rebooted with a notification of 'update failed'.
Searching through google and xda forum the last 2 hours -- have tried the unrooting the device, plugging in to power, removing sd card to no avail.
Someone has also suggested to restore wpa_supplicant file under system/bin. I don't remember altering the file at all, and when I check the file it is dated 29/3/2010... i bought my device in April, hence assuming it has not been altered either by myself or from any app. Like wise for the telephony files as well, as I haven't changed anything to try to stop the cell standby issue to improve battery life.
I am left with no options unless someone has a better idea. I have not uninstalled any pre-loaded apps. Rooted with Gingerbread (and as I said tried unrooted and re-rooted without success in updating).
Thoughts?
Current build:
Android version 3.0.1
Kernel 2.6.36.3
Build no. Acer_A500_1.139.04_COM_GEN1
Failed system update to 4.010.24
I am located in Melbourne, Australia.
(Last thing would be to download the actual rom and update via CWM.)
open /cache/recovery/last_log on your tablet use root explorer
ypu will know whats wrong
I'm in Melb too, and that particular update has failed to download about 5 times now, and when it finally downloaded, it came up with a message saying "update invalid" or something along those lines. I'm gonna wait til I get home to try and update again.
altering WPA_Supplicant file is something you would've done so your tab would connect to ad hoc networks. Must be something else.. did you alter any other files? I'm working on this same issue. frustrating as f*#%
I was running stock rooted 3.01 and was failing updates over and over until I flashed back to the stock recovery using the Acer recovery apk. As soon as I did that and tried the ota update again it worked right away... once 3.1 was installed I rerooted using iconia root 2.1 and flashed cwrecovery back to tablet... let me know if this helped

Same for me. Had to go back to stock recovery for the OTA update to work.
Mine failed the first time. I rebooted and it worked the second time.
I tried using Acer Recovery Installer 1.5, checking Stock USA 1.141.07_COM_GEN1 and touched "install recovery image", rebooted, and nothing happened?
My build number remains 1.139.04_COM_GEN1
I am sure I have missed something...
Tried downloading and installing the 5th time, still failed and stuck at the same progress bar of 1/4 followed by that annoying honeycomb with exclamation mark logo.

If you see the little bee fail screen, it is not the stock recovery, but still CWM.

Hi .. try to do that...
the uploaded file helped and solved my issue..i'm now running Honeycomb 3.1
Solution posted by Bob here: (correct the link below "www")
w w w.androidtablets.net/forum/acer-iconia-tab-a500-forum/18444-update-failed-help.html
Here's the WPA_Supplicant from my A500, after the 3.1 update. Hope this works for you guys.
I'm not sure what the extension is for the A500, but I had to add .zip to be able to upload it. Try removing the .zip before using it. Also, remove the 'original'. I added that to keep it straight on my tablet.
Good Luck.
Bob
p.s: sorry i'm a newbie here and can't post link outside the forum at the moment..
just follow the steps described by Bob!
I did see that different logo, which I subsequently rebooted as I thought it's frozen again.
Interestingly, I tried to push for another system update, attempt no. 7, and now, it progresses and complete update!!! Woo hoo!
Thanks for all the help. I still don't know which one sorts what out though... Cheers!
Hi,
Ive already looked around the forum but cannot find an answer to my question.
I know my phone is not totally bricked, I understand there are probably ways of plugging it into a PC to force an update but i downloaded the OTA update that popped up on my phone last night. As I understand it is meant to update and keep all of your apps and saved data, which I chose to do instead of wiping anything with a manual update to save all the hassle.
The phone was rooted on froyo 2.2.2 orange uk rom but apart from that there were no other mods to the OS.
The phone came up with the "power off" message and now sticks on the black Motorola screen showing
"Failed to boot 2
starting rsd mode"
I can pull the battery out and the phone turns on for about 20 seconds, and I can use the OS in this time but then the "powering off" message comes back up
and it goes back to the error message on the splash screen.
Is there a way I can stop this OTA update from powering off my phone and getting stuck in this loop or do i have to wipe the phone and flash an sbf file?
Can you point me to the sbf file for the new orange gingerbread rom?
Thanks
ryan
Anyone?
When i turn phone on it works for about 20-30 seconds, before it restarts into the splash screen. It seems as if the phone is running some sort of script to continue with the upgrade but when it reboots it cant continue or something...
The OTA update didnt even start flashing, it just downloaded, then i clicked "install now" and it just rebooted to the error.
If i cant fix it easily, can I use RSDLite and an SBF file to go back to stock? Or can you only do this on an unlocked bootloader?
My bootloader is still stock. The only thing I did when I got the phone was root it so that I could install certain apps.
PLEASE HELP!
Link to Orange UK GB SBF is in Atrix 4G Android Dev forum in the Atrix Firmwares Superthread..page 25ish.
I RSDLited this SBF onto my Atrix (unlocked bootloader running Alien #4) with no problems.
This same route may be your only option...not sure about recovery of your apps etc..I have everything backed up via Blur, Google account and Titanium Pro, so no concern for me there.
FYI, this new rom seems to have little Orange bloat and runs great for me in stock form...just rooted...and battery life is very respectable.
[Q] {FIXED}Problem with new OTA update..??....software"failed to update" message....
I have downloaded the update and clicked update now three times, and keep getting a failed to update message??.....any ideas..??.....I am rooted, but have used Voodoo to unroot......edit (now have tried 7 times......gets to the little android, and about one third of the way through installing, I get the triangle of death)
EDIT: See response below.......
Same thing is happening to me, except the phone is useless, because if I pull the battery and let it start up normally, the auto-update shutdown happens, and the cycle starts all over again.
If it matters, I'm on a stock AT&T rom with an unlocked bootloader.
FINALLY!!!
Finally got it......went to Moto.....tried through manual update with sd card......didn't work.......tried Autoupdater......didn't work the first time......ran Autoupdater a second time and IT WORKED........try that......
Still not working for me, what do you mean by Autoupdater? I've tried the SD card method and the downloaded method.
I'm having the same problem. Stock rom, rooted. the only modding i've done is the webtop over hdmi hack. tried both the manual and auto update.
There are two options on Moto......one is sd card.....the other is Auto......
http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Android_Products/ATRIX-4G_Software_Update_Page
But Voodoo did not save root......gotta find another way to root......not unlocking bootloader......maybe Pete's OneClick will update to 2.3.6 soon......
i factory reset to see if it would fix the update. ew ew ew ew motoblur ew ew ew ew ew. kill it with fire. oh the things i do for updates....
iM having problems with ota updates... phone is on 2.3.4 unlocked bootloader, i do the ota update... ended up failed to boot 4starting rsd.. flashing the 2.3.4 unlocked sbf brings phone back to life... i USED THE MOTOROLA SOFTWARE UPDATERand phone is on offical 2.3.6 software and firmware. with locked bootloader.
I keep trying the auto updater but How do I make my phone stop the auto shutdown. I cant make it stay on for more than 30 seconds I do a battery pull reboot the phone boots up fine works then 30 seconds later shuts-down and tries to install the update again and it gives me the exclamation with the android. Never mind I did a factory reset via recovery phone works fine.

THAT.
this is the same problem that's happened literally every time there has been a carrier update. search on how to restore webtop hack to stock and you'll be able to update after that.
rooted, locked bootloader, some hacks like HDMI webtop got fail to update massage
Those who don't know how to restore some hacks to stock, just go to http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Android_Products/ATRIX-4G_Software_Update_Page
choose Automated upgrade, download Motorola_Software_Update.exe, follow the steps to update.
Good luck!
