[INFO] Fonts on Transformer vs iPad - Eee Pad Transformer General

One of the best things about the transformer is how crisp and clear fonts look on the screen.
I often found how Apple renders web fonts on the ipad somewhat blurry, not with the Asus!
Web browsing looks great.

This is a underappreciated point. I recently sat down with my TF and friends ipad 2, side by side. I was amazed at how much crisper text is rendered on the TF. I expected the ipad 2 to have a perfect screen given all of the hype. The TF screen is far easier on the eyes when reading. Interestingly, the ipad 2 problem may in part be a software issue. And I quote "the anti-aliasing on the iPad 2 is far from state-of-the-art and degrades the perceived sharpness of text and graphics." Magical huh:
google "iPad_iPhone_ShootOut" for the article, first hit. I'm not allowed to enter the link as I am a noob.

It Could be the Different Resolution. Transformers is higher so Crisper.

It's all about the Pixel Density. TF has a much higher Pixel Density.

eh it's 173.72 ppi (TF101) vs 131.96 ppi (iPad 2).
Not that big of a difference.

There are many methods of antialiasing fonts. For example Acrobat Reader always used a blurry one.

That's actually a visually significant difference (over 30%), but I think Apple's text rendering is the real culprit.

That wouldn't be a problem if he wanted to stay on 3.1. I know the only thing keeping me from rooting is that I like the improvements in 3.1 too much to downgrade.

Change the resolution of your Samsung Epic to 620 X 1032!!!

This does not work well with Touchwiz launcher or the default dialer and some of the older programs.
Change the Density of the screen. Get more info on your screen, like with a high resolution setting on your PC
Need ROOT (+ BusyBox)
*Fast density switching
*With the possibility to save the density and load it on demand or save the density as your default system density
Density change not supported by all devices.
Recent changes:
(Dec. 11) Preview / temporary density change now supports more devices. Corrected version# in the about box
Note1: setting the density as the system density will not work on the *Droid Incredible* stock rom. Temporary change and change by widget on reboot will though.
Note2: The new *Nexus S* will *not* support a system density change at the moment. If it will support a temporary change is not known at the moment.
LCD Density Changer v5.4 for Android
When this programs first came I guess it did not work with the Samsung Epic so well. But now it works perfectly with the Samsung Epic. From my experience using it the first time I flashed my phone the settings did not stick then I did a fresh install and not my setting stay on my phone. The only problem I have with this application is it makes my dialer small. But I know that the genius here will come out with a theme for our phone if the demand is high. Try this program out on the android market it is now free. Please let me know what you think of it.
I am using a density of 186 and the default density is 240 so (240/186) = 1.290322580645. So (240/186)*480 = 619.354838709677 and (240/186)*800 = 1032.258064516129. My map programs look great and so does my browser. If only people can start making themes that support this resolution.
I went to this website http://thirdculture.com/joel/shumi/computer/hardware/ppicalc.html to measure the ppi and with my resoultion I got a score of 300.95 ppi. I believe the Iphone 4 score is 319. With program you can go as low as 182 and without any FC. Beyond 182 and your contact will FC. (240/182)*480 = 633 and (240/182)*800 = 1055 with a ppi of 307.57 ppi which is not too bad. Most of the newer programs adjust to the new screen resolution. Also the great part is you can always change your resolution back to the default if you want to.

Relax this will not mess up the stability of android. This will only increase awareness of the need for more flexible resolutions. The program is very safe and stable. I have been using this program with little to no problems the only problem I have is the dialer can be too small but you can still make phone calls. Some people may preferr more real estate space on their screen and some people my want to their display to have less real estate space. It is all personal preference.

Not everybody is as tech savvy as you are you know. This app will make it easier for people to change the resolution to their screens. Without removing your sdcard or changing a text file. Also does anybody know how to theme. I was wondering if somebody could start making themes for the higher resolution or at least make a dialer that will display regular size. The dialer on my phone is a little bit small if I could get this fix my phone will be perfect. Now I can have the best of both worlds a Super Amoled screen with similar resolution as the Iphone 4.
The difference between PenTile and Real-Stripe
The difference between PenTile and Real-Stripe
You can find this article here: http://www.tested.com/news/pentile-vs-real-stripe-amoled-displays-whats-different/1868/
Pentile sub-pixels
All the pixels of your phone are made up of multiple sub-pixels. Your phone's resolution (often 800 or 854x480) is measured in pixels. Each of the sub-pixels is for a certain color-- red, blue, or green. On Samsung's Super AMOLED screens, each pixel is composed of 8 sub-pixels. PenTile refers to the arrangement of these sub-pixel elements. Unlike standard screens, PenTile is in an RG-BG arrangement. So you get one-third fewer sub-pixels in total by repeating the green after each red or blue sub-pixel. These screens are easier to manufacture, and we know that AMOLEDs are not easy to make in the first place.
RGB sub-pixels
Super AMOLED Plus will change the sub-pixel arrangement to be more in-line with other screen technologies. These screens will use RGB-RGB sub pixel arrangement. So here you get those extra screen elements back. Samsung has decided to brand this "Real-Stripe". Whereas each pixel in PenTile is made up of 8 sub-pixels, the Real-Stripe screen have 12 elements per pixel. That's the 50% increase in sub-pixels Samsung has been throwing around. It comes from a comparison to PenTile.
The effect of sub-pixel arrangement
When you look very closely at a Super AMOLED screen, you can see the effect of the PenTile screen. Some colors look almost grainy, or dare we say pixilated. This is more noticeable with warmer colors. Things can look speckled, and text a little more blurry. We will, however, say that Super AMOLED looks better than standard AMOLED screens in the sharpness department.
If you take a closer look at a Super AMOLED Plus screen, you will see those additional Real-Stripe sub-pixels at work. There should be no more graininess when viewed closer thanks to the additional screen elements. This will put Samsung's screens more in-line with LCD in clarity. This new sub-pixel arrangement won't come without cost, though.
The drawback to Real-Stripe is that the resulting pixels are overall greater in size. That means screen have to be a little bigger to accommodate the expected WVGA resolution. Super AMOLED phones like the Nexus S and Galaxy S had 4-inch screens. The Infuse 4G and Galaxy S2 are running Super AMOLED Plus panels at 4.5 and 4.3-inches respectively. The increased size is because the pixels are larger. We still expect image quality ot be better than Super AMOLED.
What this means for the future
The increase in pixel size for Real-Stripe is due to the manufacturing technology Samsung is using to produce their screens. Samsung currently employs Fine-Metal-Mask (FMM) technology to manufacture Super AMOLED and Super AMOLED Plus. This is a fine method, but it is expensive and has a printing accuracy of about 15μm (micrometers). Using this technique, Samsung can only make screen with pixel densities of about 200ppi. That's right in line with a 4.3-inch WVGA screen.
Samsung expects to soon switch over to laser-induced thermal imaging (LITI). As you may expect, this is a cheaper and more accurate method of producing AMOLED panels. LITI has accuracy of about accuracy of about 2.5μm. As a result, Samsung expects to be able to produce panels over 300ppi. In case you weren't aware, the iPhone 4 is about 326ppi. That could be an incredible AMOLED screen.
We flat-out like Samsung's Super AMOLED screens, and AMOLED Plus is likely to be a worthy successor. The color vibrancy and black levels are great, and clarity is better than standard AMOLED. The lingering issues with AMOLED are slowly being eroded as new manufacturing technologies roll out. Samsung phones will probably continue to have some of the most impressive screens out there for the foreseeable future. Let us know what you think about AMOLED panels and the different sub-pixel arrangements. Would you overlook Samsung's other Android issues to lay hands on a Super AMOLED Plus screen?

Sold my Iconia A500, screen was terrible

Just sold my Acer A500 32gb and bought an Acer TF with 16gb and the kb dock (paying $100 extra in the process). Reasons:
- SCREEN SCREEN SCREEN, I mean wtf, the color depth and fidelity were terrible. Pale, washed out... and while I can cope with that, I couldn't stand looking at the pixel granulation, individual pixels were easy to notice, they looked big and arranged in small squares. I simply wasn't able to tolerate that.
- Battery life..., with what I consider average use I got like 5hours tops even less.
Rest was fine with the tablet, I didn't have problems with the extra weight compared to other tables in the market.
The Asus's offering is way better all things taken into account.
-
Samsung's upcoming 7.7" and 5.3" though with 1280x800 and Amoled will take the cake once they become available.
-
Sounds like a defective tab.... Mine does none of that, has a great screen and amazing battery life.
My Iconia is awesome as well very gorgeous all around. Just like me
Just out of curiosity, what rom were you using, Stock 3.01, Stock 3.1, Stock 3.2 or a Custom? (which custom if so)
I see what you mean about the pixelation, though mine seems a tolerable quality, what really gets me is how you can easily see the capacitive layers of the screen.
All i had before my iconia was a htc desire and the amoled screen on that is quite different to the iconia. the desire screen is obviously nicer im still very happy with my iconia .
I used to use the latest stock OTA update, don't remember was it 3.2 or 3.1.
The tab wasn't defective, one reason might be that there are different batches of lcd panels used but, the pixels on mine were arranged in such a manner that I could see them...check Engadget's screenshots as well, you can notice them there too. Color fidelity, colors, saturation, everything was worse than my first LCD panels from years ago.
I loved the camera, the build, the feel of the tablet, but saving $ on the screen is just ridiculous move by Acer.
*yawn*
Thanks for sharing. Bye.

Isn't the Desire HD sporting an AMOLED screen? That's not really a fair comparison.
I don't get it.
Apple Ipad 2 screen resolution: 1024x768
Acer Iconia a500 screen resolution: 1280x800
Many of my friends use the Apple IPad - they all notice that my a500's screen looks a *lot* better when displaying hd video.
Either obvious troll is obvious, or OP does not realize higher resolution = smaller pixels = better image quality.
Or perhaps I am missing something here?
OP's battery life
I have my Iconia running overclocked (1500MhZ vs 1000MhZ stock). Woke up for work at 2:45am today with a full battery, ran system a full hour for music while i got ready for work, battery down to 96%. Hour drive time to work, a500 playing a couple podcasts i wanted to catch up on. Battery at 89% when i arrive at work.
Go on break at 9am, use system at full brightness while on break for a hour. Battery at 80% after this.
Leave work at noon (streaming podcast all the way home. Hit traffic. 2 hours drive time - battery at 70% when i get home (Finally!))
Arrived home at 2 pm - been using my tab for 2 hours solid, screen at max brightness- battery at 66%.
Total: 3 hours heavy use with max brightness set and wifi up. 4 hours use with screen off playing music or podcasts.
If you are only getting 5 hours use either:
A) You have some app installed that is using some insane battery
Or
B) You have a defective unit.
At the end of this post, max brightness set - I am holding a 64% charge. And remember, i am overclocked and at a higher voltage then stock.

Galaxy note displaying small fonts? Crisp or not?

Upgraded my iPhone 4 and got a Samsung Skyrocket. I love the screen constrast, but that's it. When reading the screen gives me the impression of being smaller than a 3.5" iPhone, if that's possible. I keep zooming in and out and side to side at every website I load. With the iPhone, bam, I was there, or two clicks away from the correct way to read something.
Love the phone, except the screen. I tried to tweak the density after rooting, but I can't fabricate pixels. Text looks coarse and it's hard to find a correct zoom size. Maybe it's a fonts issue?
Although I'm 41 I'm pretty good at reading small fonts, but the small fonts on the iPhone 4 screen were great, while on the Skyrocket it's a mess. I have to increase the zoon to a point where I'm scrolling websites left to right, which I hate. I could get full width on the iPhone 4 even reading forums (so I like to see the nick name on the left and other info, not only the post)...not so on the Skyrocket (before you think my eyes are a freak exception I must add that, OTOH, I am myopic, so far from perfect!)
So what I want from a review is this: will the Galaxy note and/or the Skyrocket HD give me the same crisp sense I got with the iPhone 4 when reading? That's all I care about when it comes to resolutions CRISP TEXT!
Thanks!
You can calculate the pixel density (dpi) yourself. iPhone 4 has the highest DPI due to its retina display nature (326 dpi). Galaxy Nexus is very close (316 dpi) IIRC. And GNote will be slightly lower due to larger screen. They all should be much better than the WVGA resolution on a 4.3" or 4.5" screen, e.g. GS2 or Skyrocket. So text readability should be better. BTW, iPhone 4 screen has the lowest contrast ratio among other phone screens.

I can't comment on the Skyrocket HD and can't make a comparison to the iPhone 4, but the text on the Note is as clear and crisp as I've ever seen. I came from an Infuse and an GS2 and marvel every day at how much better the screen is. I still play with my GS2 on occasion but after using the Note for a month now I could never go back to it for daily use.
My desktop and laptop are gathering dust as I find myself using the Note more and more for browsing and reading online.

If you are used to iPhone retina. Do not buy an SAMOLED display.
Its the worst kind of display ever made. Maybe look for a SAMOLED plus device. (But I do not like AMOLED in general. In this stage its just bad...)
But for sure not the old Pentile matrix. No matter how much you try, it will never look like an S-LCD, retina etc.
And no its not crisp. Nothing you were used to on iPhone.
I have both. Note and iPhone
(Also still Galaxy S)
You can pretty much google non biased pages about the SAMOLED technology explained.
And the SAMOLED HD is still a pentile matrix.
As I was getting it I was hoping due to its size I wont see the difference like I seen it on the SGS. But no.. Full page view my not possible due the fonts becoming not readable. Despite the advertising or ppl telling you how crisp it is.
Just go to a shop and try to browse a bit with it. And look on the small fonts.
Also memory effect and the "lines" on the SAMOLED is still a problem and more so seen on the Note.
I would not recommend this phone to ppl with "good" eyes (looking for sharp, smooth fonts) or coming from decent DPI displays.

I think this is the best article for this http://www.flatpanelshd.com/news.php?subaction=showfull&id=1319022037
It has 315 ppi (pixels per inch), which is slightly lower than the Apple iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, which has a pixel density of 326 ppi. One would imagine that this qualifies as a "Retina Display" (because it is over 300 ppi and viewed from 10-12 inches) but actually it does not.
Because we are talking about a Super AMOLED display and not a Super AMOLED Plus, the display is based on a so-called PenTile pixel structure, where pixels share subpixels.
And if you calculate the real pixel density you will find that the Galaxy Nexus is actually closer to a “real” ppi value of 200, which is just slightly higher than on the Galaxy S II (that uses a Super AMOLED Plus with RGB pixel structure). Some claim that a PenTile panel needs around 420 ppi to qualify as a Retina display and that is probably also the reason why Retina is nowhere to be found on the specs sheets of neither Galaxy Note nor Galaxy Nexus.

Thanks all for the useful input. I was this close to buy one now on the Expansys website, but now I'm worried.
I sold my iP4 already, and I'm stuck with the Skyrocket for now. I would buy the Note and sell the skyrocket on ebay, but now I don't know.
Back to research. I wonder what store would sell the note here in the bay area (so that I can see one with my own eyes).

No, it is not as smooth as it is compared to the IP4, I can easily see the jagged edges/feathering on the text. Maybe you need to wait for an HD SAMOLED Plus.
Also if you care about the screen quality in all aspects you might find the HD SAMOLED lacking in quality control if you dont get lucky with the panel lottery.
Ok here is your answer:
My wife is also myopic she reads very small letters by simply removing her eye glasses.
So what I did is that on the Opera Mobile I went to the the XDA website and zoomed it All the way out so that the entire page was visible and handed my GNote to her to read it without zooming in,she could very easily read it since the letters were very crisp, please keep in mind that she uses an Iphone4 and in her opinion the reading experience is at least as good on the GNote as well, however you should know that the text in both stock browser and Dolphin are much larger even I can read it without zooming in.
Hope this helps.

From what I can tell nobody is making it sound like its unusable, infact you see more of the website on the Galaxy Note as compared to the IP4 due to the higher resolution but the crisp text feeling is not the same.
At least he only cares for text quality and is not concerned about brightness uniformity on whites or if they are pure or yellowish whites.
That is the worst example i've seen You can at least upload a screenshot with the full resolution. Don't use the S-Pen method, but do the swipe. That way you'll get the correct size.
And don't upload it with the XDA app. It compresses the image even more

There's quite a bit of FUD here.
The size of the characters is a function of screen resolution, screen size and zoom level. The Galaxy Note has a resolution of 1280x800 which is similar to many 12" laptops, but is crammed into a 5.3" display. Hence text will appear tiny when a normal webpage is displayed at native resolution without any zoom.
Having said that, due to the screen size and resolution, it's very easy to view an entire webpage and zooming into a section you want to read is a matter of a couple of touches, just like an iPhone.
@RipplingHurst: Try alternate browsers like Opera, Dolphin, Firefox to compare how well the page reflows when zoomed in. I believe that is the real crux of your issue.

Sure, those 3 factors are what influence the size of the characters, but that's only one factor in legibility. The pentile display makes for a significantly worse reading experience, there's no two ways about it. Particularly in greyscale.
And as the previous replies stated, it all depends on what you're used to. I'm used to working on high-end IPS monitors, which probably makes it worse for me.
But I agree with you that no matter how good/bad the display is, the browser still makes the biggest difference. And on the iPhone, the browser is very, very good at zooming in.
I recently noticed that the stock Note browser (most likely on all Android stock browsers), it uses static dithering when you zoom in... which is just ridiculous when you consider the power it's got!
Very interesting points all. I should definitely try other browsers. i think playing with apps like lcd density is not productive to what im trying to accomplish. To the one who pointed how the wife reads well in the note being myopic like me, that really helped me and tilted me back to trading my skyrocket for the note. will see what happens.
i'm really used to read in bed with my phone very close to me, and I l'd like to quickly find a zooming that I like no matter what page. Apple stock browser is really good at zooming and deciding what to render together with text, as it was pointed above.
Now movies are not that important to me and I think the skyrocket does a much better job than the iPhone at that. Im sure I wouldn't be disapointed with the Note. I've read about the white tint and I can live with that, no problem.
But I really wish web browser had all the rendering power needed to display smooth text. For me that's the big deal about high resolutions in tiny screens.

Ok me trying again. Despite I wrote you all up. Even with the links and all.
If you want quality and smooth fonts especially the small ones. The PenTile is not physically able to do that. Just to some extent of size. Has really not much to do with the browser... that rendering can really do only this much when it comes to small letters.
If you take out the rendering and the browser out of the equation when it comes down to it the SAMOLED will loose against SLCD , or IPS or how they are all called.
I never said its unusable and sincerely there is no competition for that res and screen for the next 2 months I guess or more. If it was unusable I would already sell it. But I would rather wait for an LCD with that res phone.
Am I just telling you. You will see thats not smooth.
Especially now that many ppl told you. And you using the phone on your nose.

It wold be better if you can try the device for your self and decide. Im very particular about the screen and i easily get bothered about the yellowish whites that my replacement screen has.. and in dont like to crack up the brightness when im in bed using my phone but thats personal preference.
Movies on the galaxy note is borked for now theres a thread about it and this is the major deal breaker for me and the source of my decision to get a refund.
The screen quality/technology is the major factor on how great your text will appear. The really high ppi the ip4 makes it hard to beat in text smoothness when zoomed out. But it doesnt mean the galaxy note is bad you just dont get that jagged free text or thst safari goodness in text reflow.

Seems like the guys answering here have broken Notes or something. I can easily read an unzoomed webpage even in portrait mode with good quality fonts. Supercurios screen app also changes the rendering of small fonts so try that. I've tried the ip4 extensively and much prefer my Note.

Thanks!

Guys, no one said you cant use the Note....
But the OP is in particular out for smoothness.
No font, rendering etc cant help the physical build of PenTile. Its the hardware thats bad or that I am not get crucified, lets say not perfect... (far from perfect )
Please read something about it before you jump to advices. Look closely to your display. You really had to be blind to not see that the fonts, object anything is not smooth.
The other faults of the SAMOLED that the OP will notice particularly on brown or grey background I wont even start to talk about .

One of the great joys of the note is that due to its large screen you don't need to hold it so close... Even though the dpi is less than the iphone, the fact that you can hold it further away should make up for it.. If you showed the same amount of text on the note and the iphone, does anyone really say it reads easier on the iphone?

The greatest smartphone made even greater if it wasn't for... the screen!!

I am an enthusiast Note owner, grabbed one of the very first ones 10 months ago. It's simply the ONLY TRUE SMARTPHONE out there, NOTHING compares to it.
Although I am extremely satisfied by my Note I was obviously very interested in the Note II not because I was planning in upgrading anytime soon but because in time that was surely going to be my next smartphone.
Well, having just seen the actual specs I can say that I am (gladly BTW) going to wait for the Note III and if my Note gets stolen/lost before then I am going to buy a new NOTE "I" (yes, "one", as in the original version of the Note)!
The reason? Well the Note II is improved practically in everything, in some areas it's been even GREATLY improved, I really like it a lot. The problem is that the ONE thing they have not only NOT improved upon but actually made it WORSE (or, better said: less good) is the most critical one: the SCREEN!!
5.5" 16:9 vs. 5.3" 16:10 means that it has a very slightly bigger overall area BUT it's NARROWER so it's actually smaller in the most critical dimension of any wide screen!! WTF?!? Wide screens (looked in landscape) don't need any less "vertical" space, they are already plenty wide and what they all lack is vertical space/height when doing anything else but watching movies!!
It's the same phenomenon we have witnessed in PC monitors. We have gone from 4:3 to 16:10 (reasonable enough although I initially resisted the change and only gave up when I began to watch a lot of videos/movies on it) to 16:9 which is totally unnecessary and just F'ing stupid!! It just makes you having to always scroll even more!
As a matter of fact, I am going to cling to my 24" 16:10 Eizo for a long long time yet...
So, in short, I love practically everything about the Note II BUT its most critical thing: the screen.
I will pass.
P.S. Actually there is another aspect in which the Note I is better than this second version but it's totally subjective and it's a pretty unimportant aspect to me: the looks. It's not that I don't like the Note II, it's actually pretty good looking. But the Note I is, to me, much better looking.

If you imply that this is just one more of the several threads opened on the Note II, this one is supposed to focus on this one point: the most important spec of the Note, the screen, is WORSE on the Note II than on the original Note.
BTW, I started this thread especially because on the last thread I have been active on apparently I was going in too many details in my replies (i.e. my posts were "too long") and my last post was deleted.
I figured it's OK to be as much "long" (i.e. THOROUGH and EXHAUSTIVE) as I want on a thread where I am the OP.
If mods see it differently so be it, I guess I will become a lurker and be done with it.

I have to say I agree with you. 16:10 is always better than 16:9. The Note 1 has a higher pixel density and simply more pixels.
Um, you do realize that the screen is only 'less wide' by .09 inches?
You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but aren't you overreacting a bit?
I can't even imagine how you'd react to the iphone changing from 4:3 to 16:9.

I don't care all that much for PPI, it's way overrated and it's good enough in both cases anyway. The issue is having to scroll even more than you have to now when using the screen in landscape doing anything else but watching movies... Browsing, documents reading (let alone editing..!) etc etc
P.S. Anyway, they did go from a Pentile matrix to an RGB one so it should actually be better notwithstanding the slightly lower PPI. As I said, the Note II really is better in EVERYTHING but screen size/aspect ratio! Crazy...

I am just a bit disappointed, that's all.
The Note II is still the second best Smartphone in the world, to me..
Ok, jokes aside and expanding a little here: I will not upgrade to a Note II and I will replace my Note "I" with a Note "I" (if I was forced to before the Note II comes out) because I have tons of accessories for it and since its major draw has NOT been improved upon I would totally lack the motivation to discard the numerous and expensive accessories I have for the original Note and to buy the same ones for the new Note.
If I started today "from scratch" I would buy a Note II indeed...
The real point is that I don't see it as a compelling upgrade for any Note I owner.

I think youre overreacting a bit. Like you, i saw the 1280x720 spec and was sorely disappointed. I also happen to be one of the lucky few who does not suffer from black clipping on my note. If i had the clipping, no amount of pixels would make me happy. We have yet to see if that issue has been solved. If it has, note ii is a worthy upgrade for many.
As for your apple hate, simmer down. Competition is good. I havent owned an apple product since i bought a 2nd gen ipod touch in 2007. But i still watch every keynote video. Apple may be for the masses but they occasionally do something revolutionary.

I think you're missing the point.
It's that the phone has lost 80 pixels (i.e., 1280x800 to 1280x720).
When you're browsing things, the extra pixels do matter so you can view more content on the screen.
16:10 > 16:9 anyday.
I think I'll actually prefer the 16:9 screen. Seems to be the standard now for high end androids anyway.
And isn't the screen pixel arrangement RGB instead of pentile on the Note II? Can't stand the whole 'pentile is rubbish' statements I see everywhere (as I love the screen on my Note), but I'm sure there's a noticeable visual improvement to the screen on the Note II.
I for one, am definitely upgrading.
I bummed about the screen also..I'll be honest I bought the Note for the screen plain and simple..
I use landscape a lot so any bit taken away from me I will definitely notice.

Not impressed!

Had a play with one today side by side with the 10.1 version and wasn't impressed. For starters the pentile display is even more noticeable and distracting. Secondly they both have the same number of icons/rows on screen which wastes screen space imo. Why not make use of the extra screen space and add more icons per page. Makes things look really chunky. I spose it's good for people with dodgy eyesight. Will give it a miss for the time being.

Agree on the launcher, I changed mine almost immediately after purchase. The whole point of buying the larger tablet is to leverage the additional screen space so having an interface that is simply a scaled up one is unacceptable.
Other than that though I'm generally satisfied with the tablet. I have no complaints about the screen. It would be nice if the price was more affordable but going from 10.1 to this definitely has its advantages, especially the keyboard in landscape mode.

Other than losing magazine UI pages changing launcher has no other signifiicant effect on Touchwiz itself though, the same widgets are available to you short of Magazine UI. What you gain from using a better launcher though . . . can be golden. Full control over margins on the edges of home screens, full control over the number of rows, columns and number of icons in the bottom dock, full ability to resize any widget, gesture support to add quick shortcuts to applications using gestures . . . to name a few.
Short of what is on home screens launcher changes don't impact other elements of touchwiz. You may not be able to duplicate home screens exactly but you can get really close. Of course the purpose the whole point of changing launchers is freedom to customize so why would you want to make it look exactly the same?

Thats good to know.
Still a shame they used a pentile screen again, as I can really notice the 'fuzzyness/grainyness', even more so because the screen is larger. I can notice it on the 10.1 inch version, but it's not as annoying.
Also it's £250 dearer in the UK for an extra 2.5 inches which is a rip off imo.

Your one of very very few people that notice it on either display. At normal viewing distance it should be 100 percent unnoticeable on the 10.1 and probably the 12.2. You either have crazy good eyesight or inspect these things looking to complain about something. I think the screen is nothing short of orgasmic.

When I got mine last week I used it the whole night, but then I noticed for quick stuff (getting information from evernote) I would grab the note 10.1 first.. I'm also waiting for my case to arrive so i might be a drop more tentative ? The office that comes it is pretty cool i will say (once you finish downloading).

I do have good eyesight, but wouldn't say its 'crazy good'. I have always noticed pentile displays and do not like them. I also do not 'inspect these things looking for things to complain about'. It's just just obvious to me.
Take a look at a MacBook Pro retina 13inch which is slightly larger than the note 12.2 and you will see the difference. Btw, I do not own a MacBook and my primary phone is a note 2. My iPad retina looks sharper than the 10.1 and 12.2 and that has a lower screen resolution.
This is one of the main things that has put me off purchasing one of these tablets!

While I cant say you dont notice a difference I can say that I think that your perception that it is pentile is affecting what you percieve the screen to look like. Iv never noticed pentile on my note 2 note 2014 or the 12.2 and comparing all side by side I prefer all to the ipad air. (Amoled note 2 kicks butt) without my face pressed to the glass the notes all look spectacular compared to anything out there. And pentile mimics the way our eyes see much better than rgb stripes. I believe you see an issue. Im sorry it bothers you, truly. Its just unfair to blame the technology when so few other people, professional reviewers, and display scientists (display mate) say pentile is doing awesome for us. Wish you could get the 12.2. Its a tablet god.
