What app for extracting rar? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi!
I am finding i need to get into & extract rar files. I have root explorer, but it appears as if RE only extracts zips (if i am wrong though, let me know).
If RE does not extract rar archives, what do people use? Looking for something convenient... I would rather not have another file manager since i use RE.
Thanks!

Um, the free app in market called unrar.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App

OK.. Thanks... I infer from your response that the answer was maybe obvious....
I saw unrar, but didn't really know if the free app was limited (perhaps by time like the windows version is), and I also didn't think it would work in Root Manager.
But perhaps I should have installed it.. I just knew that installing File Expert or anything else would be ridiculous as I have RE... It annoys me that as RE is the de facto standard file explorer for enthusiasts, and considering that since other file managers have now added this functionality plus since Root Explorer already extracts zip files, I do not understand why the author would not have added this functionality by its current version. Zips are great, but rar files are pretty commonly used as a windows archival format... and obviously gunzips should be supported (actually, I can't remember if it extracts tarballs and gz's...it may)

the windows app doesn't have a limited time afaik
I've used it for years free, no cracks or anything. I think they just encourage you to donate

I use androzip for rar files.

Speaking of which, anyone know of one that can extract multiple RARs at a time into one file? I've tried many but none have that feature from what I saw.

that is what the paid version of winRAR claims it can do.

Yeah that one is good but I was hoping there would be an Android app that could do that.

winzip?

Hi,
I want to know if anyone out there knows if it is possible to install Winzip or a similar product on to my o2 XDA Exec? I want to be able to unzip files on the handheld...
I have used a couple of ROM versions, and both have winzip. Have you checked your list of pre-installed programs?

Should be standard on your Universal.
In the \Windows Directory, it is called IA_Zip.exe

You can also use the Zip extension built into Resco file explorer, and WinRAR has a version for the PocketPC.

BE more specific with details.
When you say files, are you talking about apps or like. zip files? If apps then they are in the app launcher. For other files you need a file explorer like estrong file explorer available on the app market.

Cleaning up bloatware.....

I just finished rooting and installed root explorer and was wondering if there is any unneeded extras I can remove?
Thanks

I wouldn´t remove apps just rename then. Cause Acer looks for the apps when you want to update. Then you get massive problems - just have a look to a lot of topics here...

I would listen to corn3d79, don't erase the apps. Read around the forums

youre almost better off using PM (android package manager) in a terminal or adb shell to disable or freeze the apps you dont want. you can also do this in apps like titanium backup.
this way, you're not renaming files and later forgetting to name them back to the original files, and it'll keep your 'frozen' settings after updates.

There's advantages to freezing/disabling apps using Titanium Backup or Package Manager (built into Android system). The first one is that its built-in function and you do not have to alter filenames and have to remember to rename them back later. Secondly, I don't think it affects what apps show up in the market place. Some apps require special permissions from certain things like PHONE or CAMERA, etc. If you disable it, I believe it won't affect the marketplace, however if you rename the file, the system doesnt think its there period and will think your tablet is incompatible with the apps.
note: this really only applies to people who are renaming phone.apk, etc.

Native Hotspot Assistance

Once a deodexed rom is released it will be easier to test the hotspot mod out. Because not having the phone would require someone else that can Odex the files and test. This would be a pain because you would have to do that for each test. For now I am curious about something though. Is there anyone out there with the S5 that is paying for the hotspot? If so can you configure it and connect to it at least once, if you haven't already, and send me your services.jar and services.odex? You will probably need to be rooted in order to get to the files. Don't worry there won't be any sensitive information in the files.
I tried the mod you posted, same as was done on Note 2. Not sure if it worked or not as the build had some data issues, so couldnt comnect to test. It compiled and booted fine with the line deletion at least. Was easy enough to find
Gettin frustrated with getting the deodexed working to move on. Have some issues ive never seen before. Just Play store, Hangouts and Google Calendar sync FC's. Think its a GmsCore issue

Thanks for that! But you know how I am It is just my nature to use the native app. So if it can work that is best IMO. That way when I finally do get the 5 it is already waiting for me :victory:

Yeah I saw that. Thanks for sharing. I wanted this one to be specifically for getting the services files from someone that is paying for the service. So that is why I created a separate thread.

Thank you. Could you Odex your hotspot mod and try it with either your rom or stock to see if it works? If it works on Odex then you know it will work on deodexed once it is ready.
To get the native hotspot working, you need to:
update carriers set type="default,mms,dun" where apn="n.ispsn";
in the following file:
/data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
This is what worked for me on Sprint North America. Just got it working today, was trying all the known tricks including rebuilding framework-res.apk with no luck. Be advised however I first used a sqlite app from the market and it added a space between mms and dun which did not work. I installed the sqlite3 binary and did that SQL command from adb shell. Can do more of a walk through if needed, let me know.
Edit: miked63017 beat me to it. Here's his flashable zip: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52089811&postcount=9

His zip is admittedly different than the zip I made, mine runs a sqlite command in place, while his copies a premade db into place. Either way, lets get some feedback on how this thing is working...

Yeah but it is using the mod that you discovered. So you should be credited. And my other point is that your zip only adds the portion of the mod that is required. His replaces the entire db file which could cause issues.

It's not a big problem. I knew your zip was different. My only point is that Mike published the method of unlocking the hotspot first. So he should have been credited for finding the fix. That's it. You could have kept your zip alive if you wanted to. Although I still believe his install is safer.

Because his zip only does a sql update for the specific change that is required. You're zip replaces the entire db file. Nothing may ever come of that. But if a user had a db file which had different contents than the one you provide they would lose those changes. There is also a very slight possibility that permissions on that file could get corrupted when replacing it. Highly unlikely though. I'd be more concerned about the first possibility.

Would be a good idea to decompile sectelephonyprovider and see if those values in the database file can't be forced as default for all additions that have that apn field

Can you download files from LAN to selected folder, modify it, and send it again? or you can, using eg QuickPic sort images to different folders?
Can you use download files, and send files to different folders? eg apps to apps, music to music.?
Or you can using ID3 Tag editor download and modify music data/covers?

Give it a rest. We get it. The changes to external SD access have inconvenienced you. The changes are no surprise, so you shouldn't have upgraded if it was so critical to you to continue having full read/write access with every app.
Either use one of the fixes suggested in this thread or in the other thread you're complaining repeatedly in, or downgrade to 4.3.

its not about me, what about other people that see update, install it and find out that they cant use 50% of their apps? did you thought about that? and some people cant root, or dont know how.
I just use 4.3 but others update their XZ and would just find out that their phones doesn't work like before and just call XZ stupid phone and sell it, they gonna buy different phone and find out it again and they gonna see how google mess with idea of freedom of Android.
Its like some car producer would say that you cant use your back seats, and lock back doors, how you would feel about that?

This is a development site. Most people here are perfectly capable of rooting to workaround issues like this or even of checking critical changes in Android updates before blindly updating. I posted about this change in KitKat a few times in the large thread about the update that you've participated in, for a start.
Repeatedly complaining after you've been told how to fix your issue is doing nothing but pointlessly flooding threads in any case. Please stop.

Dude I can do anything I like and there is no error .. So if you really dont know why its not working for you simply just downgrade to 4.3 rather just thinking of others , if they like the phone they will keep it and if they dont then obviously everyone has their own choice to sell it or buy it. So please stop complaining and take some time to fix it if its not working for you then just simply downgrade ... AND CHILL

Come on now, really?
There's no reason for you to repeatedly complain about this in different threads after you've been informed of how to fix it.
This is becoming off topic and it's disrespectful to flood a useful thread like this, so this is my last word on the subject. Have a good day.
