[INFO] Asus - EE Pad Review - Eee Pad Transformer General

Hi Guys,
Just got hold of the Eee Pad today so thought I 'ed do a quick review and let the prospective buyers know what I thought about it. I had the option to get either the Eee pad or the Acer Iconia (or xoom- but I didn't see the reason to pay the price for something similar)
So the main comparison came down to the Iconia and the Eee Pad and I finally did go for the Eee Pad over the Iconia, I compared them both side by side, checked whatever I could and I am not one bit disappointed, saved 70 £s (iconia is Heavy for a tablet btw!)and I am in love with the ee Pad. the only reason I did want to go for Acer was the full USB host but I am eventually going to get the keyboard which has USB slots so it came down to ASUS.
I have attached a YouTube video of the review have a look and let me know what you guys think and feel free to ask any questions or if you want to test something specific on the tablet let me know. I will try my best to do it.

No problem. Good review. I liked the fact you did a walkthrough with the device and its features rather than just rushing everything like most other reviews. You didn't try and sell the item but gave a good honest approach and it seemed like a natural review without a script. Should be encouraging to others looking at this device thinking whether or not they should buy it.

Glad u found it useful.

Nice review - I'm still waiting for the keyboard bundle.
What's the stock onscreen keyboard like? Do you own an Android phone? If so how does the keyboard compare - is the responsiveness about the same?

I do have a Desire-Z but I dont really use the on sccreen key board on that, If I compare it with the galaxy s i had i 'ed have to say Eee pad is really good, one for obvious reason the screen size and secondly the 10 point multi input touch screen, yes i ed never use 10 fingers at a time but even having a 3 point multipoint screen helps typing 10 really calms me down
Anyways to answer you question, yes it really is a treat to work with and honestly I am not a big fan of on screen keyboards but this is good, probably as good as the ipad if not better.

i use the keyboard more than i thought ....
spare battery (even charges my phone)
sd card slot
usb ports
screen protector !!! much safer with the keyboard protecting the screen !
oh .... and its a keyboard too
Might not be a bad idea to wait, especially if it's not something in anticipate really needing/wanting right away.
It could be you might have some issues with the tablet and need to return or exchange it. I think it'd be good to be sure you've had time to play with the Transformer and be sure you are absolutely happy and keeping it first.
Funny because I have already ordered my Dock and its on its way but I am waiting on a paycheck to order the Tablet it self.. I had $200 and it came in stock so I figured why not? its going to be horrible opening the box and having a Keyboard but no Tablet..

i think this is the best advice, though i DO want a keyboard, but i agree, i should wait to see how i like the overall experience. thank you.
from my personal experience, I committed to buying both the Tablet & Dock bundled. having search high & low, finally coming across a shop that has both in stock, i knew i had to snap up it up. because over here in Singapore, tablet alone cost $699. $799 inclusive of dock. initially i did think that the dock was just an accessory that i might not carry around with me considering the extra mass & weight. but hey, guess what...i've been bringing in & out with me everyday! although i do have a laptop for me at work, i find that i use the tablet w/dock alot!
i give myself excuses use my TF to surf the net via stock browser & dolphin. its an amazing toy & i haven gotten sick of it.
I might just be 1 of the few lucky batches that has not encounter problems with the keyboard or trackpad. all has been working fine for me. btw, im running on 3.1.
experience has been great!!!
ps: apologies if i might sound over-zealous
I purchased the dock. To me the availability of the dock is THE distinguishing feature of the Transformer. If one does not have need/want of the dock the Samsung lighter and thinner 10.1 or 8.9 look like better choices.
With the dock I often leave my laptop at home.
I just ordered one after selling my iPad 2,
Didn't go for the dock option as don't see myself ever using it,
Plus I didn't want to spend much money, I love 7" form factors so till there come out I think the transformer will suit me fine...

The Samsung 10.1 costs 100$ more. I don't think you get 100$ more stuff with it, in fact it's almost the same hardware...
Used the keyboard and trackpad to reply to the forum message
I have found using a combination of fingers and keyboard much more usfull than I thought
Would recommend purchasing
ern
i am certain that i will buy the keyboard dock, i dont see myself NOT purchasing it after i have first decided that this is something that i really want and will use.
i bought an e reader and was sorely disappointed with the screen resolution, so i waited. then i got the nook color, and was disappointed with the lack of bluetooth, gps and a few other things (i made a list of pros and cons before i returned it).
so now, im getting a device that i have been stalking on the internet and reading about since its announcement. im excited about it and the possibilities it holds to satisfy my ultra picky gadget expectations.
to those of you know have one already can you answer this question.
how is the internet browsing? is it fast like a pc? while browsing on my phone over wifi the web pages dont seem to load quite as fast as on my pc.
It has high potential to replace your netbook with the keyboard (minus MS Office).
I just wish we had a good suite for MS Office. Polaris is nice, but still doesn't cut it.

The Samsung I held felt great. It feel very solid and lighter than the Transformer, even though the specs are close. The thinness may have something to do with it. Also, it was very smooth and has a great display. If I did not want the keyboard, the $100 would be well worth the difference.

No. No table I have used is as fast as my desktop or notebooks.
Dunno. My TF sure measures up to my netbook (HP2140). Not all that slower that my Toshiba I7 notebook either. Much depends on what is on the web page one is navigating to one supposes.
Guess I'm the odd one here as I really have no interest in getting a dock. I bought it to use as a tablet and that works for me. Now, when the desktop dock appears I'm all over that!

[Q] Samsung vs

Hey guys.. im just a lil curious. I currently have a acer a500 and im kinda annoyed with acer support. When got me looking into returning it for an asus eee transformer, until I saw that this was released! Im im sure you guys are a little biased, but if you could have your choice of any pad would you buy the samsung again? my concern is mostly devs.... not a lot going on for the acer imo.

The choice is yours. If you want expandable storage, HDMI out, and save 100 bucks out of the box go with transformer. If you want a polished device all around, nice screen and have cash to burn on the things mentioned above - go with Samsung.

yeah the apparent lack of dev support and locked bootloader (at the time) is why I returned my A500. Decided there really wasn't much I really needed all those ports for personally. Tried to test drive a TF at Fry's but the touchscreen wouldn't respond even after i rebooted. When I pointed it out to sales guy he said that was the 2nd display that stopped working which I took as a bad sign. So far pretty happy with my decision because the GT is much easier to handle and I've seen quite a few familiar names dev-wise showing up here.

ya ive heard the TF flexes alot.... is the GT more solid feeling? thanks for the reply pretty much exactly what i was thinking and looking to confirm . as long as the 30pin samsung port works with 3g dongles and keyboards im happy!
I had the acer for a couple weeks, then this tab came out and I returned the acer. To me it was more about DEV, I figured we would see custom ROMs faster on theGalaxy.
Thee device itself is much lighter, faster, and I didnt use any of the ports.
I actually had to return two of the acers cause they just kept force closing an the hardware/build was sketchy.
I am totally happy with the tab

Is it more solid....if you mean does any part of it feel like it will come loose or feel cheap then no it just feels lighter than the A500 and Xoom. It seemed like people making an argument for the Xoom always equated its weight with a solid feel which I didn't understand. The A500 felt lighter but also felt more solid than the Xoom IMO.

How is the "bloatware" content and ease of rooting? I had an Iconia 500 (returned 'cause I was a little afraid of ****ty Acer support and lack of dev support) but the Acer had a minimum of bloat and root was dead easy.

There are only two apps from Samsung prepossessing, a music market app (Music Hub) and Samsung's own market app. Rooting isn't one click or accomplished via an apk like Gingerbreak on the Acer (which I think I read doesn't even work on the 3.1 update). If you have a little experience with ADB and using a command prompt you prob won't find it difficult to root. The only issue I had was getting the Samsung drivers installed but that was more of an annoyance than anything else. The instructions are really pretty straightforward. I think someone is working on a script to run the root commands but I haven't seen it yet.

returned my acer and got a samsung 16gig 10.1 today... little sad that my bootloader is locked but eah im sure with time this will get fixed. my acer was faster and no lag like my samsung does, but the samsung has more potential imo.
As an owner of both the Transformer and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at the moment (will return one soon), I can give you some unbiased advice.
The Galaxy Tab is definitely the better tablet, as is. Meaning if you're not looking to spend any more money after you've paid for the tablet, you'll get the better tablet with the Galaxy Tab (of course, it's $100 more). The build quality is superior. It's thinner/light etc.
However, if you're looking for a tablet with more hardware features, then the Asus Transformer is obviously the clear winner.
The only concern I have with the Galaxy Tab is support from Samsung. Asus have been nothing but awesome. 3.1 firmware 3 weeks after announcement then kernel source shortly after. The Galaxy Tab came out with 3.1 so no idea how it will turn out... I haven't had a chance to own any Samsung phone but I've heard horror stories regarding Samsung's support. But I'm sure we'll have xda's excellent communities to help out with either tablet.

Looking to buy a new tablet. Iconia A500 or Eee pad Transformer

Narrowed down to these two options. Not really interested in Transformer Prime at the moment.
Read similar thread at A500 general forums and just want some opinions here, too!
Thanks!
you may get biased views here, but I just picked up the original transformer. The option of the dock is a big plus, even if you think you don't need it.
So far, it appears that Asus has been very good about updates and fixing issues that people have seen. From what I've seen, there have been more updates on the transformer than any other tablet.
The promise of ice cream sandwich seems real. Unlike other tablets, Asus seems to want to keep tablets up to date. I also have the original samsung galaxy tablet (7 inch) and updates have been rare and a long time between them. 2 updates in over a year and the rumour is they may not support ICS.

I have both Acer and Asus
Make it short get an Asus, root it and use custom ROM
biggest disadvantage of Asus and Acer is the charger I have know idea what engineers were thinking, even cell phone manufacturers (except Apple) start using micro USB for charge and data sync and 3.5mm jack for headphones, before that it was a nightmare.
Did you look at XooM 32Gb?

Thanks for the post. XOOM 32GB is more expensive. And this is my first Tablet so I am trying to not invest too much this time.
I do agree with the charge and 3.5mm jack. But it seems pretty difficult to find a car charger for transformer? I've read the devcake charger thread and got an impression that there is no car product support 12V?
I just went through exactly the same thing. I think the build quality and connectivity of the a500 are better. GPS doesn't work very well on the Acer (was the deal breaker for me). now that I have the asus rooted and running revolver and blade3, this thing is awesome! I'm sure there are awesome ROMs out there for the a500 as well but can only speak for the asus. I think the screen does make a difference as well. many people have said that the screens are very close... I agree, but after spending an extensive amount of time on the asus I think the ips screen is a much better choice. Very easy on the eyes. the screen is also calibrated note neutrally (IMO coming from photography experience). my first choice was the iconia but after getting this I'd say that I'm very happy with the final decision. I wanted a device where everything works and this tablet does that, and very well!
Check the build got the says as well. I got lucky and picked up a b80 and many of the bugs seem to be fixed from earlier versions from what I've read...
I think overall in my experience, ASUS makes a far superior product over Acer. I've been in the IT industry for over 12+ years and that's what I have seen, from desktops, notebooks, monitors etc.

Car charger:
As it looks like there are no dedicated car chargers for the Transformer (Then I don't expect there is something for the A500 either) my first thought was to use a standard USB adapter and the Transformer's USB cable. But the Transformer doesn't charge properly via USB because it needs more power than a standard USB port delivers. But there is another device with the same problem: The iPad.
So although i haven't ttried it, it might work to use one of the USB car chargers for the iPad and plug in the USB cable of the Transformer.
-----
TF101 vs A500:
I am absolutely pleased with my Transformer (16GB WIFI, no dock because it was cheaper ). The software between the two doesn't differ very much (but Asus includes some nice applications, e.g. full Polaris Office (don't know what the A500 has instead), the community is bigger for the Transformer I think (can always be helpful) and Asus is the Tablet manufacturer with the fastest updates.
In terms of hardware both are very similar as well (if you don't count the dock as a big advantage of the TF101) but there is one little thing of the Iconia Tab I wished I had in my Transfomer: the full USB2.0 Host directly on the tablet (for plugging in Keyboards, USB sticks etc). Because on my dock-less Transformer I use the flimsy Asus Adapter that gives me a normal USB port, but it works ok.
[typed with my Transformer and a wireless Logitech keyboard attached].
Hope it was helpful,
have a nice 2012!
Biased view? - Definately - Go for the Asus Transformer (WITH KEYBOARD DOCK) - Simple choice.
The acer a500 has a major bug, it thinks your in another country and won't let you download apps from the market! It can be solved by rooting but what if you don't want to root?
This is not a rumor or hearsay a friend of mine has an a500 and can't download anything. It thinks she lives in some middle Eastern country when she actually lives in the US. She does not want to root it so she is screwed. I have tried every "fix" I can find online and none of them work.
I had the Acer. I sold it...and almost regret it.
Acer is easier to root and rom development is great.
Asus' position against root. if I had know it, would had been enough to stay away from it.
Techs are similar, only the form factor is a + for the Transformer.
my 2 cents
I've had the Acer and now I have the Transformer. I love my Transformer, but I would go with the Acer. The only thing I like better about the Transformer over the Acer is the look and weight. The Iconia can get heavy at times, but you get usb ports "on the tablet" and it doesn't require you to use any proprietary cables. Just use a usb cable that you may already have laying around. (This is coming from someone who doesn't have or has never used the dock with the Transformer, so my opinion might be different if that was the case. But I would have to go out and spend $150 to find that out.) You don't have to worry about what model number you have, which determines what root method you use, etc. But at the end of the day, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. It's just a matter of personal preference.
TF101
Better Build Quality
BEST screen in class (better than A500, XOOM, Sony, Samsung, iPad)
Least buggy - ASUS really address **** pretty promptly by comparison with other - very much the continual improvement ethic
Best Detachable keyboard engineering
We have Roach as Dev who is working on CM9 - testament to his class.
SUPPORT FOR VOODOO SOUND - PRICELESS

Buy ASUS Transformer Prime because it is newer and more efficient.
After reading all the "biased" opinion threads in both forums and had some hands-on time for both devices, I think will be getting TF101.
The Prime is out of my budget and I don't need that much power yet.

I want a tablet very badly and the OG Transformer looks very enticing

Hey Everyone!
Like the thread title says, I'm looking to buy a tablet. I never really wanted one because I thought they were excessive luxury items but Amazon's Kindle Fire announcement (mostly it's $200 price tag) made me think for the first time about getting a tablet.
However, once I learned about the Fire not having a microSD port, I looked at the B&N Nook Tablet. I played with it in stores and I really liked it, but that 7" screen isn't optimal for me. I was looking for other options and came across the refurbished Transformers going for $300 on Tigerdirect. (Using my Chase credit card, I can buy it from Amazon and get 5% cashback which means I can get the Transformer for about $285)
Obviously this forum is biased, but do you guys recommend the Transformer? I'd love the Prime, but I just don't have that kind of money as a college student. Am I better off going with the newer Nook Tablet? Have you guys heard of any problems with these refurbed Transformers?
Thanks in advance!
Asus refurbs have a bad name to them lately. Either way, I love my Transformer. I returned an iPad2 to buy it. My wife returned her Kindle Fire because she expected it to be more like the Transformer. Said she'd rather have no tablet, then a half a tablet.
So, my vote goes to Yes, Buy it.
I'll chime in here. I've had my Transformer since the summer and I must admit that I absolutely love it. For me it offers the ultimate in portability and choice. Whatever your desire, be it watching a movie, reading a book, updating a work document, accessing your home computer, playing a game or browsing the web, it is an ultra portable extension of your computing life. If you are already in the Android ecosystem, once you register your tablet all of your Android apps will show up on your device for download. Some things it does not do well is picture taking but who uses a tablet for taking pictures? Tethered to my Android phone, I have the internet anywhere on the go. I use it with the Swype keyboard (you have to sign up for the beta) to take notes at meetings and can nearly keep up with the spoken word. If that's not good enough at a meeting, voice record it. If you have kids, there is plethora of movies, games activities to keep them quiet in the back seat on a long ride. I rooted my tablet more because I like to tinker, but out of the box I think you will find that there is not much need to do so if you are no so inclined. The stock ROM is smooth and responsive and full of useful apps; not overly bloated with proprietary B.S. In short, what are you waiting for? Pull the trigger and you won't regret the investment; it's tons of fun and useful when needed.
I have to agree with aburgthing, it's a great tablet. I also got mine this summer to replace my Asus eeepc 1005HA which was so slow that I would rather use my Incredible instead of that slow piece of crap. I use mine constantly.
The thing is absolutely amazing because IMO it can do way more than your standard netbook, if you're a college student (like I was up until a month ago!) you'll definitely want to get the keyboard also. It's a great addition for multiple reasons: It makes typing way easier (IMO it's kind of awkward to type with your thumbs on a 10" screen), it provides you with a stand when you don't feel like holding the tablet, It gives you another 9 hour battery, it provides you with 2 usb ports which function exactly like usb ports on a pc and you get an SD card slot which supports up to (the current) 128GB. Not to mention if you install an app like syncSMS you can send text messages to friends during class with the professor being none the wiser (since the texts can be sent and received via your TF to your phone)!
It's an amazing piece of technology, I spent $600 total on mine and I don't regret it one bit.
look for some used equipment deals first. Usually you can find better deal than refurb.

I would but new or from a reputable source if you go used. If you plan on typing a lot then get the dock also, it really makes this tab stand out compared to the rest.
I have zero regret with this tablet, much preferred over all the other choices... Aside from the prime, but i'm waiting for the revised version.

I bought mine "like new" from Amazon for a pretty reasonable price from warehouse deals.
id have to say the transformer in my opinion is the best tablet out there minus the prime when its worked out. ....laugh all you want but id be willing to bet i am over 10 ft away from my tab for less than a few minutes a day i m pretty much attached to it....and except for things tht are just impossible to do, i have completely replaced my laptop with it.im a student as well and its done everything ive needed it to do/
I decided to pull the trigger. I'm really excited to get it! Thanks again everyone!
BTW, what did one of you mean when you said ASUS refurbs have a bad name recently?
I am very happy with the Transformer purchased mine around the time of the Touchpad big sale.Boy glad I did not get that thing, and wanted a tablet and hands down it is the best for the price.Picked up the dock at Christmas for $99 from Amazon a good deal.Check online for a good price I was lucky the price had dropped under $370 at the time. The refurbished will save you some but not that much imo save and get it new.
Absolutely love my Transformer. I would definitely buy it again if I had to. It is fast and I have not had any problems with it at all, everything works great. I think some places are even selling new ones cheaper now that the Prime is out as well, but I could be mistaken. I say go with the transformer.
just make sure the refurbed transformers are not ones with the bad light bleeding issue! thats the only issue i've had so far with my transformer...not a major problem, but can really annoy you at times
I had an ipad, ordered the Prime. Changed my shipping speed and Amazon graciously kicked me to the back of the line and i got backordered untill mid Feb so i cancelled.
So glad it happened, i grabbed a refurb OG Transformer and i love it. With the right rom and kernel it kicks my wife's laptops butt on loading webpages, and if you have seen anything on ICS it will just be that much faster. Very glad i saved the 200 bucks, power button is pretty weak though on my refurb but ill fix it if it gets too bad.
Glad to see you pulled the trigger, welcome to the darkside!
Isn't that how it always works? I was originally with Nook Color, then I traded up to a Galaxy Tab, then I traded up to a Transformer. I kept finding reasons to justify the cost.
The TF201 has some issues of its own, particularly flaky QC and poor wi-fi and GPS reception, of which the TF101 has neither but has had QC issues in the beginning (I believe they're all ironed out now).
The TF201 has a smooth, slick design, better thinner profile and weight, a better processor, better screen, better camera, overall better device but its issues are alarming and the fact that they announced the TF700T which seems like an admission of poor design for the TF201 leads me to believe you should either stick with the tried and true TF101 or at least wait until the TF700T.
Try looking on craigslist.

You should get an ipad2. Apple came out with this anti-fingerprint technology where your fingerprints are instantly dissolved the moment you touched the screen.

[Q] Iconia tab A510

Since there´s no dedicated section for the A510 (at least I can´t find any) I decided to ask my question here. Many apologies for this.
Does anybody knows if the A510 come with a Gorilla glass I or II or without?
Edit:
The Acer homepage as well as GSMarena didn´t have mention of what display type is on the A510

Well, considering nobody has one, and nobody has done a review on one, and Acer only showed a glimpse of one earlier at the CES convention, I would say....
Who knows....
I'm hoping for gorilla glass VI. After seeing them drop a 20kg from 50m on that tab. Wow! Man, the glass didn't have a scratch one!!!
.....tablet was flattened to a pancake though...
The tablet would be a good steal if it comes with a gorilla glass.
Chat with Acer
I decided to ask Acer directly because info on web is unclear. Here are the relevant parts of the chat:
Gayathri S: Hi, my name is Gayathri S. How may I help you?
Beth: I would like to know if the new A510 has Gorilla GLass like the A500 does?
(pause, wait, get coffee, wait for info to be looked up, voila!)
Gayathri S: Now a days all the models in Iconia Tablet has Gorilla Glass display.
Beth: Excellent news! It's unclear and some reviewers have speculated that it does not.
Beth: Any word on actual shipping dates?
Gayathri S: unfortunately, I am sure about the shipment dates. Once it confirmed you will get the information through online.
Beth: Ok, thank you for your assistance.
So, take it for what it is I'm hopefully my amazon pre-order will ship soon.

That´s a funny response. Not confirming if it has gorilla glass or not but making a general assumption.
Well waiting for the availability in Germany as it seem it´s now available in France and Luxemburg.
yep,
i just got mine in france yesterday.
some hundreds of tabs were delivered by acer all over france, really tricky to get one, with pre-ordering only.
only one vendor has, nothing online.
playing with my new toy, waiting for a dedicated place and rooting solution !

Zero issues following a review from a user in the Amazon store.
http://www.amazon.com/review/R1PGJ6...e=UTF8&ASIN=B007E8TWPU&nodeID=541966&store=pc
Well let me start off by saying I am quite pleased to be the first one to be able to rate this awesome tablet. I've owned the original Acer Iconia A500, the Asus Transformer, the Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab and liked them all, but this, obviously is the next generation of tablets. First off, the price blows the (somewhat inferior) Transformer Prime out of the water. Insiders (as of 4-16-12) have told me that the Prime has been discontinued this month but news has not hit yet. They will be making this up by producing the T300 which will be a prime at less money the way it should have been from the beginning.
This tablet does everything it should with the amazing speed of quad core tegra3. The screen is crystal clear and the viewing angles are quite deep. There is plenty of memory with a cheap way to get 64gb out of this by getting a microsd card (32gb). The wi-fi is strong and the gps has zero issues with lock or signal. Sound is very nice in stereo and sounds expensive for such an inexpensive unit. All in all a great buy and you should not hesitate to buy this for its amazingly inexpensive price!
Update: The tablet, hooked up to a 56" lcd tv streaming hd movies works perfect with no issues.
I also had it hooked up to a wi-fi hotspot from my phone through Sprint to use google maps in the car and it works very well.
I already had a chance to drop it on the ground accidentally and it fell screen first onto pavement and not a scratch on it. I wish there were already cases and protectors for it but have to wait on those. Again, I wouldn't hesitate. That video review right below my review seems to be of a defective unit.

no issues at all.
i got a replacement one, because the first was defective (random reboot, freezings..)
but the new one works perfectly..
The wifi is good but my GPS doesn't work at all. I ran a speed test with the speed test.net app connected to a cable connected wifi router and it averaged 10 to 11mbs. Only had 3 out of 4 bars. The GPS issue kinda sux cause my a500 had a bad GPS unit in it to. I always have my phone but still. May send it back for repairs .. and I think they have already found a rooting method I'm just waiting to decide if I'm gonna send it back or not before I try it
No lucky
My a501 was quite good on gps, but the a510 is definitively better. I've got a capture even inside my house.
This tablet has been out for a while now, it would be much appreciated if the mod in forum can get a dedicated thread for the acer iconia tab a510.
Its not fun going through the Tab A500 thread for information and review of A510
Iconia Tab 510 forum please
I second that.
