Welcome to the world of (M)Atrix and to XDA.
If you are getting your phone tomorrow, first thing you will have to check is the version your phone has. If it is the latest 1.83, you will still be ok. If it is the older version, 1.5.7, do the update, which enables HSPA on AT&T.
To root your phone on both version, check this link out. It is possible to Root your phone once updated.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046626
Also, your phone comes with memory card preloaded, you can put one extra if you need so, but as it already comes with some (Bell Atrix came with 16G, not sure how much is with AT&T), you will be able to Root it without any problems. Just make sure you follow instructions properly. You don't want to brick your phone on its first day of arrival.
Enjoy!!!
Just thought I'd let you know I just got mine from walmart for $118.

How much memory do you have on your phone? Menu -> Settings -> SD Card & Phone Storage -> Internal Phone Storage is what it comes with.
If I am not wrong, all Atrix come with 16G internal memory. If you want, there is a slot for more, you can put upto 32G more.

Ok guys as title suggests I am litterally done with this phone now and am ready to throw it out of a window! The only thing stopping me is because it is so new and the fact that I absolutely love it apart from not being able to get official 1.5 update on to it.
I have tried everything!
All I want is the 1.5 (not modded/rooted) firmware with widgets etc. I have tried downgrading but that doesn't work, I have tried upgrading but that doesn't work and over the air hasn't come over the past 3 days it has been turned on (although I suspect this is due to being on Orange although I did buy a T-Mobile sim and it didn't update in a day with that inside either).
If you can help I WILL PAY!!!

Seriously man.. I have to be honest. If you can read directions and follow them, there should be nothing that you cant do on the g1 yourslef. There are numerous threads that give you Dummie proof step by step instructions.
So is your phone stock firmware?? Because if that is the case then you should recieve an OTA update for cupcake.
What exactly is the problem you're running into? The whole process may seem overwhelming at first, but it's really cut and dry. it is as simple as replaceing files on the sd card, updating a couple times and running some verbatim commands. You shouldnt be having that many problems.

Seriously buddy I have been building PC's since I was 13 and have been modding/flashing and programming my HTC Hermes for the past 2 years and yet this is impossible! It would appear I was unlucky enough to get the one firmware/build that is almost impossible to flash (look it up if you don't believe me, google for "123099" and choose the xda link).
Yes it is the stock rom that came with the phone but I haven't had an update in 3 days??? Is this because I am using an Orange sim card? I have purchased a T-Mobile sim should I put this in and leave it for x amount of days hoping?

You either get it OTA, or you root it. Unless you can find the official update.zip.
Once you root it, flash a European JF build, which is as close to the stock build as you're going to get.

I apologize if you feel that i questioned your ability. It is just very often people are quick to "ask how to do this/that" I did a small search on the build number and it does appear there are people discussing the issue.
I was just trying to provide words of encouragment if it was something that just "seemed" overwhelming.. but it seems you have a background.. Best of luck man
You won't get the ota update unless you're on the original tmobile sim the phone was shipped with.. otherwise how would tmobile know to push it to you? Orange certainly aren't going to do it. This has precisely bugger all to do with your build number and everything to do with using a different sim. If you want to pay me for this information, ill happily receive it.

There's basically no disadvantage to rooting, but try to get hold of the proper SIM to OTA then, or find someone who has that update.zip...

I am sorry, but this is completely wrong. You don't need the original sim. You can even receive updates via wlan or on other networks. Anyway , I would suggest to root. It's nothing criminal.
I sent you a pm on how to do it, read the one that says "this explains better on how to install the 1.5 update" or something like that

Yea I dont quite know what I was on about there.. I was tired and irritable when I posted that and I can't remember what I meant.. There may have been some basis of a point in there about using payg sims and the always-on internet on the g1.. I was assuming it wouldnt work properly.

This is a snapshot of my device's memory properties. Over on the myTouch Champion boards, everyone is clamoring about "where is the memory?!".
What's hogging up all of the memory? I know that it sounds crazy, but could there be a file hiding in there, yet to be "turned on"?
How are you screen shotting with no root? adb? Using advanced task manager the lowest Ive seen is around 160 free and the highest I get is 330 when ending all (except sense). My firmware version is 2.1 update 1 is that the latest thing released for it? What are these mytouch champion boards?
After a master reset I checked and had a total ram of 2 hundred something so there must be some issue there

You might want to reserve judgement until after the full release. I feel like there is a piece of this puzzle missing. TMo surely has its reasons.
I talked to a in store Rep at TMO and he said the phone in on a soft release, and the full release is on June 20th. For that I'm in wait and see mode.
Ive been told the full release is the 16th
i have to admit, 145 M for programs is a LOT less than I expected....granted, it's twice what the G1 had but still.....if only I could get rid of all that "my" crap, I'm sure there'd be a lot more of "my" memory available
Tmo is banking on the apps2sd that comes with froyo hence the 8gb card that comes with the phone so don't worry

I hear that,I just hope froyo comes sooner then later, my memory is super low and I honestly don't have many apps installed I think its just everything like bookmarks and cache filling up the storage.honestly if they knew the system was gonna leave such little memory to use they should have put the system on its own partition and made a 512mb partition just for the user.

Don't download an OTA update if your rooted. pretty simple. You won't download an update for a patched piece of software

what i did was uninstall all apps requiring su then uninstalled unrevoked and the restarted and shut off anything that didnt have to be running and updated...so far no problems short of having to reload a couple of widgets, i cant seem to get back to regular android launcher though
a friend of mine updated with unrevoked still installed and his phone made it through but it hung for about 20 min and i had to take the phone from him because he was ready to remove the battery, his sister had wifi running and after update it wouldnt start, my cousin turned off wifi before updating and his wifi seems fine...
Does anyone have a "bricked" phone? I'm curious as to whether it's a true brick or if recovery/bootloader can still be reached. As far as I can tell it's only rooted phones having these problems, I'm also wondering if people are pulling their batteries. Reports are saying that normal unrooted customers are saying their phones were "bricked", but I'm sure there's a lot of people that were rooted trying to get theirs replaced that aren't going to admit that they were rooted.
since someone in my inner-circle designated me as tech support i have a lot of people calling me, i just had a somewhat akward convo with a friend ending... root?? whats root, i dont even know what that **** is....*background* um dad..... yeah safe to say if you have an expensive phone and a competent kid with access and general knowledge of general electronics keep your phone away from them

I have a normal, unrooted EVO 4G paperweight. Won't boot at all. Dead.
YUP same here, normal EVO, installed second update and BOOM, will not turn on, went to near sprint store and order new one at no cost, should be getting it tuesday or wed.
So I decided to jump on the bandwagon and get an N1. This will be my first smartphone purchase and am pretty excited. Can't wait for monday when it arrives!
Another thing... the guy I bought it from installed the Cyanogen Mod 6.0... can anyone tell me what the major benefits are? Do you think I should reinstall the original firmware so I can get used to the "stock" OS before moving on to the more advanced OS?
it's a great rom. you should try it first before reverting to stock.

Another N1 newbie here, get mine on tuesday, got it for a great price, so I have "downgraded" from the Samsung Galaxy S, but to be honest, I'm expecting more speed, a better camera, and more stability, but unfortunately a worse screen. Oh well, cant have everything i suppose. Stability and performance are more important to me than that at the moment.

Yes, quite. I'm disappointed - I would have kept it if it had worked OK.
Main problems for me are useless GPS, and random freezing and shutting down... all of these problems have happened whichever firmware or ROM I use. I got lag, but thats sorted now with the latest lag fix.

I still have the G1 customer loyalty plan.
I bought a MyTouch Slide off contract and didnt like it, and took it back.
Meanwhile my mother wanted my G1 so I went on Craigslist and bought a MyTouch for cheap.
I soon tired of waiting for Froyo for the device and went back on the list and picked up a Nexus.
This phone is awesome.
Now here I am in here to see if I can learn something about Android.
And maybe if I can get my courage up root and mod it.
Say what? No root yet. That's crazy. N1 is all about modification. Yeah it gets annoying waiting for a new firmware update. Ask all galaxy s owners. They all brag about how their benchmark scores are higher then the n1. Who they kidding. That's why I got rid of the captivate. Just tried it out for couple of weeks but came back to the n1.

I found a store in my town that had the SD Card gingerbread update so I went there today. While I was waiting to be seen, I saw a My Touch 4g get updated using the SD Card by a customer service person. It took about 10 minutes. I was encouraged to see how quick it took. Now it was my turn. The customer service (C/S) who assisted me was a former tech support person for Tmoble who was now working in a store. She was very knowledgeable and very nice. She took my sdcard out and put in the gingerbread sdcard. The update started. There was about 10 steps that the update had to go through. The first step was 'bootloader'. The C/S said that this was the first G2 that she has done. She said she had done her My Touch 4g Slide and the update went smooth so again I was encouraged. I was happy to not have to wait for the OTA.
Well the update started on the first step and 45 minutes later, it was still on the first step. So she stopped the update to allow me to do a factory reset of my phone and I did so. The store had two gingerbread sdcards so she tried the second one on my phone. I went to starbucks for coffee and 20 minutes later, the update was still stuck on the first step. So, she told me that there was something wrong. She asked me if I had done anything to the phone? I said no. I told her that this G2 was a replacement phone that I had just recieved about a month ago because my first G2 stop charging. Well she gave up and so did I.
I called TMO C/S and they said that they had no record of the G2's having problems with the store gingerbread sdcards. He first asked me if I had any third party apps on my phone, I said no. They told me that the cards did not come from them but they came from HTC. So, I called HTC. The guy there commenced to reading the press release that we all have read a thousands times about being able to go to the store and get gingerbread after August 6. He also told me that he had no record of G2's having problems getting the update at the stores. I asked him if the same SD Card was to be used on the My Touch and on the G2? He said that he did not know and yes he was tech support . He advised me to call HTC headquarters at a different number and ask them that but they were closed.
I know some of you are gonna tell me to do the update myself with the links that are eveywhere on the web. Well, I'm not gonna do that. Tmo and HTC gotta get it together. They are running a business and they MUST do what they say they gonna do. I know that TMO don't have to provide any updates, I know this but they are offiering the updates and they tell us to wait for the OTA or go to a store after the Aug 6. Well I did that, I got nothing. By the way, there are three TMO stores in my town and only one had the SDCARDS. Peace

That's being kinda rude. If he doesn't want to root or apply manually he doesn't have to. He's just telling us what happened. No need to be rude.
OP, if the SDcard update didn't work, you should wait and see if you can get the OTA. If the OTA isn't working for your device either, you should contact T-mobile and express that you'd like a phone with 2.3 or will properly update to 2.3, assuming that you don't want to root or manually apply the update yourself.
That's ridiculous....minus the rude part, it is true tmobile and htc would much rather see you buy one of their newer phones and renew your contact than get a good working update. Try custom roms if you can...the vision is one of the easiest to root and stable when rooted and there are hundreds of roms around, I'm sure theres some rom gingerbread flavored you'll like.

Whether you choose to root or not, it's your device and you can do what you want with it. If you want the stock T-mo experience, then they should give you what they promised you. Good luck!
While I disagree with you rooting (many of the problems here are people who shouldn't even need to root in the first place, it's not for everybody), I don't understand why you wouldn't manually update. Download the file, name it update.zip, put on your sd card root, press a few buttons, done!

I may have the answer. You said that you had received the phone as a replacement. Did it already have gingerbread on it? Remember that some of the phones people were getting as replacements had gingerbread 2.3.3 on them and if your phone was one of those you can't update from 2.3.3 to the final release which is 2.3.4. Just a thought.

Well they DON'T know what they are doing otherwise the custom rom community wouldn't be as big as it is if they were able to get anything right themselves. So your **** out of luck. Let us know when you want a good working phone.

I am very familar with rooting. I rooted my G1 within 5 months of having it and it stayed rooted for a year and half more until I retired it and got the G2. The reason I chose not to root my G2 was because I did not want to be contastantly flashing and removing roms and fixing issues. I got tired of baby sitting my G1. I have other things to do.

So... you tried a bunch of half-baked "roms" made by a bunch of kiddies who don't know what they're doing and found it a royal PITA. Ever heard of a "superstock" system image? Its basically the factory image with a few goodies added in, specifically ROOT. It doesn't require any "babysitting", but opens the door for some amount of enhancement, like the ability to change your hosts file (usually used to block spam), or the ability to delete useless cruft from the system image (i.e., you don't like the gmail application? Delete it.). You don't have to go with a full out special brownies system, but it is nice to at least gain control of what you own.
The store I work at finally got the SD cards to update, but the G2 update will not install.
The update works fine on the mytouch 4g, so the card is goood.
Well that sucks. Hope you get the issue resolved soon.
Looks like I figured it out. The G2 would only update if the battery was %100 charged.
Any less and it would freeze during the update.
Now that I know the update works I'll try and post the files when I get home.
Thanks atlp99!
I'd really like to get my hands on that file. I assume it is a pc10img.zip ? Seems like this is the best solution for those of us running the 2.3.3 leak...
G2 2.3.4 update pc10img
Here is the G2 update off of the micro sd cards the stores are receiving.

Works for 2.3.3 leak!
Just used this file to update my G2 running the 2.3.3 "leaked" gingerbread rom. No problems. Just slip the file into your root directory, and hold the volume down while turning the phone on. Piece of cake. You will lose your application data, of course, but you'll be updated...

No less than a day after I suck it up and downgrade my G2 to 2.2 so I can update (using update.zip) to 2.3.4 does the PC10IMG.zip get posted. My lack of patience kicked in. Nevertheless, thank you for posting this!

Having my battery at 100 percent did not work for me. The update still just sat there looking at me. This is crazy buy while I was trying to figure out what the problem was. I decided to do checkin and about 5 minutes later, I got the updae OTA
