**Edit: i just posted this in the questions forum -- seemed more appropriate. moderator, please feel free to delete. sorry!
What's up everyone! just needed some advice if you don't mind. lately my phone's been freezing randomly, and it seems like my battery life has been getting crappier..
was wondering if I should just Odin back to stock and re-flash everything, do you think that would cure my ills?
I started with my first ROM -- srf1.1.0 and loved it... tried the vision kernel 1.1, tried genocide 1.0... LOVED vision 1.2 but went back to 1.1 because ppl started getting bricks..
i don't know if it's data corruption (have journalling off), or if it's like artifacts from vision kernel 1.2 (it didn't give me any problems, honestly my fav kernel with insane battery life it seemed)
yesterday i restored a back up that was pre-ext4.. and it when that rebooted i had the "android" flashing over the original sprint bootup animation, so i rebooted and got thrown into a boot loop. pulled battery, booted into cwm and restored into a more recent backup that was post-ext4 and things seem to be fine.. except i've gotten maybe two random freezes since.
so yea, do you think Odin to stock and reflashing srf will bring me back to bliss, or.. am i screwed, or somewhere in between? i've read as much as i could but i know i'm a newb, so i'm grateful for any wisdom y'all can throw my way. THANKS!
This is more then likely a kernel based problem, but you can try using setcpu and limit your min. clock speed to 200mhz not 100mhz,this has helped several people ; My phone loves 100mhz,never had a freeze while using that clock speed, but each phone is diffrent, and might I suggest using Twilight Zone 1.0.4,awesome kernel...

thanks! i will look into using that kernel!
Ya my phone just flatout locked up on me twice within 5 minutes. The second time th screen went bright yellowish tint with an artifact white line running across the screen. Good times.

My phone does this too. Screen goes static washed out yellow looking with artifact down the screen. Have to battery pull to fix it, no overclocking or undervolting. Getting ready to odin and reflash myself.

Yea I'm about to brick it purposely and get it replaced. I reflashed and still the same. It just locked up on me while changing wallpapers?

Also I had full battery about 3 hours ago. Now I'm sitting at 18%. ...and they say I'm stupid for wanting a nexus s lol

Are any of you overclocking or undervolting? This will cause data corruption and freezing. I get it all the time at 1.3Ghz but not at 1.2Ghz. Every phone is different.
Do you BONSAI?
Mine did this last week, but I had reverted to rfs on 2.5.1 running Gingerbread that has some issues. When trying to put everything back (couldn't just run backup since I had changed systems), it took a day, stuck loops, stuck nothing, stuck Samsung, etc.
Read how to fix bricked phone, back to EC05, re-rooted, re did cwm 3.0, reflashed Syndicate, now everything smooth again.
I was kicking myself in the a-s for doing that, so hopefully this would help and save you a days worth of problems. Just find that link, read and follow
yea i just odin'd back to sock EB13, went to the EC05 through ODIN, reflashed SRF1.1.0 and everything's been GREAT since... getting superb battery life like i was on the vision 1.2 kernel.. weird, but i'll take it.
What version of ec05 are you guys odining back to? The version I have (EC05 FULL) was causing me all the issues I had. Instead I odined to stock eb13 and upgraded to ec05 ota. Since then im back on midNIGHT [email protected] w/ midnight honeycomb theme and I have to say this thing has never been speedier, or more stable than it is now. Also, I tried to redownload ec05 from the midnight android dev page and I get a corrupt file error when trying to unzip the .tar from the ec05 rar. I feel if ANYONE has any issues, before they blame the kernel I suggest starting from scratch on eb13. Not one freeze yet, no artifacts, no lag, no horrid battery draining. Life is good

I do that often, I just run an Odin back to DI18, upgrade to ec05 over OTA, then reflash the ROM I wanted. It brings my phone back up to full speed.

any particular reason by DI18 rather than EB13?
i think i've read in some other threads that it seems DI28 and DK28 are better somehow.. is that true?
so much that i've learned compared to when i was first starting to research what rooting meant.. and yet, still so much more to learn!

So I recently had three or more incidents when my phone froze and I had to do a battery pull. Both times, after a restart, my phone has been working normally, no signs of apps force closing, and all data and apps appear to be working.
I am currently running Frozen Syndicate Rom 1.1.0, stock vision kernel, on ext4 with journaling disabled.
Each time this happened, I was worried my phone wasn't going to boot up or would continuously force close. Is it rare or common for that to happen? or am I just getting lucky???

for some reason, I find it very hard to believe. Unless I have journaling enabled without knowing. But I am sure I've never enabled journal.
Does creating a nandroid backup all data, apps, sms, contacts, etc? Eliminating the need for titanium backup?
Thanks in advance.

I was in the same boat as you when SFR first came out but it will progressively become more unstable. Just flash the journaling zip and hope that there isn't any corrupted data hiding.
A phone crash doesn't garuntee corruption without a journal, just a good chance. If its in the middle of a write operation or a commit then it will probably trash a lot of data

I'm on SRF 1.1.0 with the twilight kernel and every once in a while my phone will act up. I just choose reboot from the menu and everything is fine again for a few days.
I just flashed the journal on zip and have not noticed any performance decrease. Quadrant scores remain the same.
I don't see why people wouldn't do it. I'm very grateful the times I had to pull the battery out there were no corruption that resulted.

im not sure when this started but it seems like every rom, every kernal i use now my phone will close apps to a black screen and freeze up for different lengths of time. was doing it in stock, and now a custom rom. tried different kernals... seems to be worse when the phone first boots up. its almost like a force close but slower and i don't get the force close message. help
Edit: ok i brought up the ram manager and my ram would start around 250 and climb up before my eyes until the screen blacks out.... how do i figure out what is eating up the ram.. and why does it stop?

yeah odined to stock ec05 and it was just as bad. rebooting the phone actually made it worse... seemed like it took forever for everythign to stabilize. phone also seems to get hot but i could be wrong about that. not the battery but above the battery near the camera
Quite often this is caused by restoring old data over a new rom using a program like titanium backup. Sometimes you can get away with it between similar roms but restoring Froyo data on to a gingerbread rom will almost always cause lots of FCs.

Isn't the spot right above the battery where the chip is located? Have you been overclocking your phone like I have at 1400 everyday? I was wondering if I have been flashing too much. I saw some of these issues myself. Odin started freezing as well but it seems to have smoothed out. I thought I may have wiped out my phone

Ummm, I am kind of at a loss here. You don't have any physical damage to your phone? No serious drops? You didn't go swimming with it in your pocket? But seriously, I run at 1400/100 on demand all of the time and that spot gets hot on Gingerbread ROMs but not on Froyo unless I run a lot of video at 1400 max.

When did you purchase your phone? did this start to happen after you started loading custom ROMs or since the start?
What is your current setup right now? Do you use RFS or EXT4?
What hacks have you loaded to your phone, and after what even that you performed on the phone did you start experiencing this issues?

I had this issue for a while and it caused me to leave to the iPhone, but now after months of waiting I am trying to bring my epic back
I will post my results I am going to try flashing back to stock and see it if can stay on for a day with out crashing....I'll be back with results in a day or 2
Mine does the same thing and it shuts off sometimes at 35% battery left. Just in the past month. Im stock not rooted. One more thing somedays i get 13 hrs of life and others like 6, same usage everyday and same area so service isnt the issue.

I had this same issue. I was to a point of chamging phones.
I decided to watch 5 different tutorials/youtibe videos on how to odin back to stock.
In that process, 3 of the videos had different options checked. Yes, I decided to try each way, restoring apps/data from Titanium, each time.
After the first 2 attempts, and still seeing the freezes, I started to get some kind of com.google.apps process force close errors.
I was really ready to beat my phone up at this point.
So, after deciding, I've had enough, I said I would do it ONE more time. (There was still one more checkbox that another video was showing...)
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Sry, my fat fingers pressed submit.
Anyhow, Ive 0 programming experience so, all of this might kust be a lucky fluke. When I odin'd, I checked all three options. Re-Partition, Autoreboot, And F. Reset Time.
Only 1 video of the 4 I watched said to do this.
I then restored my apps and data back w/ Titanium.
I did make sure that any data from OEM apps, was not broight back, as a precaitonary on my part. It was really driving me nuts. Hope this helps....
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
crap well it wasn't TW4... uninstalled it last night. today rebooted and same thing.... its so strange it only happens the most after i reboot the phone. black screen with the status bar up top. if i touch the screen the button lights will come on ... if i swipe down the status bar it will eventually come down.. but with a ton of lag
i guess i'll nandroid backup and start from scratch with odin again. bone stock no root see what happens.
EDIT: just noticed that the modem seems to reset every time it does this. didn't see that before cause it doesn't always make the no signal sound. but the bars on the status screen go dark and the little x pops up above them before the home screen redraws. so basically whatever i'm doing goes to black screen.. times out for 10 min with just the bar on top, modem resets and goes back to the home screen
ok i brought up the ram manager and my ram would start around 250 and climb up before my eyes until the screen blacks out.... how do i figure out what is eating up the ram.. and why does it stop?
man this is nuts... i've got android system info running and i'm watching the processes tab... all the programs start usign memory, then android starts killing them off until they are almost all gone then i go to black screen... i dont' know what the hell is going on
edit: tasks is showing android.process.acore twice, package com.fede.launcher. both are using 34.89 MB and have cpu at 100... however total CPU usage is only showing 7%
If you are running a version of Stock Gingerbread and it's worked for you for at least 4 days without a reboot, please check in here and answer the following questions:
What version ROM, what version modem?
Are percent of the time do you typically spend in a low signal strength area?
What options did you have selected in ODIN when you flashed it?
What launcher do you use?
Is your phone rooted?
How many apps do you have installed, and are not from an "official" market?
How long between charges?
Anything else you may thing contributes to your success with Gingerbread?
You can see where I'm going here. Some people seem to have great luck with gingerbread, others (like me) keep having reboots. Perhaps there is something common between all the lucky users that we can figure out.
1. EH17 on both
2. If I'm at work, I have hardly any phone signal, but usually a bar of 4G. Outside of my office, I get a few bars of 3G.
3. Used Heimdall 1.3 over EH06 which was over EG22. Flashed everything but data, cache, and recovery.
4. Zeam Launcher
5. Yes, rooted.
6. Dozens of apps installed. From official and Amazon market. One app not from any market.
7. Charge daily. Leave on charger at work.
8. Luck of the draw on my phone?
Eg22 rom and modem. Maddoggins lock. Never a reboot. Working nicely. Seems after freezinga few thing the battery is gettting under control. Not even concerned w another flash til an official is released.
1. EG22, ROM and modem
2. Inside my house, there are some dead spots but outside its usually alright
3. Umm i think i put the tar or whatever in phone not PDA and no reset time(obviously)
4. GO Launcher EX
5. Of course
6. Um i think all are from official market that i can think of...?
7. I usually charge every night or just put in a spare battery
8. Well i use Eg22Plus Kernel and qbkings overscroll and battery percent mod. Also use necrosans Eg22 hotspot hack. Ive had one reboot EVER on gingerbread about 2 or 3 days after flashing EG22 but it was after tethering for 3 hours straight haha and i think the phone was just overloaded.
1. EH17 w/ ee03 modem
2. I usually have 5 bars with 3G when I'm using data, and on 4G I'll have two bars most of time. I guess every where I go in Nj have great signal.
3. I don't flash Roms with ODIN.
4. I used Tw4.5 by fr4ggor mostly, now I'm using spb 3d launcher.
5. Yes, I'm rooted
6. I have 28 apps installed from the official market.
7. I use my phone till it dies then charge it once it's dead, until its at a reasonable percentage, maybe like 60% - 70%.
* Idk why gb is successful for me I've been running the supercharger script and selecting option 12 & 9 with the last 3 GB builds*
*I usually delete the five terminal emu. that's installed with gb.*
I too had no reboots on EG22 rooted Bonsai B14. Will probably go back to that until then next leak and install the EH17 Browser with it. My reboots on everything else came with Wifi and also an Airave. So it is not signa related for me.

There is now way possible that anyone of us can be 100% sure that we haven't got a random reboot unless we stare at the phone 24/7. The reboots can happen even when we are not attending to the phone or over night in our sleep.
I've had my phone work fine all day and when I get up at 0400h in the morning find my phone just finishing an SD CARD Scan because it rebooted.
IMBO, I believe that this affects all GB roms from the 1st leak to this last one, its an ongoing situation with Sammy / Sprint, possibly thats one of the reasons why we see an increment in the RDF pages...

Actually it's pretty easy to tell. Look at the uptime under Settings>Status>Up time. The number resets with every reboot. If you've never had a reboot it should correspond to the number of hours since you turned on the phone.

What version ROM, what version modem? EG22, Using EH06 modem.
Are percent of the time do you typically spend in a low signal strength area? A good amount here in NH.
What options did you have selected in ODIN when you flashed it?Just the middle option checked, modem in phone slot.
What launcher do you use? Varies. LP, GO, trying out Zeam
Is your phone rooted? Yes
How many apps do you have installed, and are not from an "official" market?Probably a couple
How long between charges?6-12 hours depending
Anything else you may thing contributes to your success with Gingerbread? Had a lot of bad luck with different combos of roms, kernels, and themes, I am staying pretty stock until official comes out. My gps works on EG22, and I get the upgrades of GB in general so I'm happy.
What version ROM, what version modem? V1.3 Hurricane[ERA]
Are percent of the time do you typically spend in a low signal strength area? Med-High signal strength
What options did you have selected in ODIN when you flashed it? Used the ".pit" fle nd "repartion" and "auto reboot" selected.
What launcher do you use? I use Go launcher EX.
Is your phone rooted? Yes
How many apps do you have installed, and are not from an "official" market? I have about 25 apps installed 3 aren't from market.
How long between charges? Usually 8-10 hours because of school.
Anything else you may thing contributes to your success with Gingerbread? Hm I feel the repartioningwith the stock deodexed rom helped and the hurricane rom is problem free, and using the EH17plus kernel seperate flash. Oh and the V8 Supercharger update-9 beta-ish script using the multitasing settings.

Oympus ROM, messing w v6... anyways, just wanted to point out, I get the reboots, sometimes with a lockup, that do NOT show up in uptime or the battery stats (stock). had one 12 hrs ago and both didnt catch it. Mine does the soft reboot, just blacks out then comes back a second later, starting into the SD scan. About every 3rd time, it locks up first, I cant get any response from onscreen or cap. buttons, then it vibes one quick burst then reboots. RAM crash? Grab the latest V6 (update9beta2) here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
MegaRam option #9 worked wonders for mine. Tried other options, but was still getting frequent 'soft' reboots when memory would leak out completely. I simply installed Advance Task Killer to monitor reboots, because anytime it would do a soft reboot the little green guy would be back.

Have you flashed a different kernel? Or are you over clocked or undervolted? I was getting randome reboots because I was undervolting incorrectly. I am now running Faux's latest .2.0 1.3ghz kernel and have had no reboots.
I get them on rare occasions .... but I'm experimenting with UV ... not frequent enough for me to pinpoint an issue or to be annoyed by it. Last time occurred after after doing a system setting.
I dont get random reboots anymore, cm7 and last faux kernel at stock 1.0ghz fixed it.
I've been on CM7 for a week and no reboots.
been running it for 2 weeks or so. Had one minor glitch yesterday with my device when I locked the screen- she wouldnt wake back up and had to battery pull. Other than that, no issues. I am running Faux's 0.2.0 Stock CM kernel as well.
I had one reboot on my Atrix since running CM7. Compare that with several a week on the stock Motorola software. Using whatever kernel shipped with CM7. Overall, a great improvement!

a reboot if you leave the torch on to long? It may be a known issue I haven't looked but it seems to happen to me every time..

It could be due to something not getting flashed right. Depending on what rom/fruitcake/etc is flashed, not all images are replaced. That's by design, because the good ol' fashioned SBF flashes EVERYTHING, which you really don't always need, and can be potentially dangerous. Assuming something got corrupted somewhere, or there's an older version of part "x" that doesn't like to play with the never version of part "y", that could cause a crash. You might want to look at a safe way to get a clean wipe, and then redoing CM7. I'm not suggesting SBFs or anything. But I'd check out samcripps' Fruit Cakes @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1163009 though.
Since i upgraded to ICS my note randomly shuts itself down to the point I have to longpress the on/Off button tot boot It up again.. there's no sign of low battery after rebooting ...
Very annoying if you're counting on your alarm clock in the morning to get to work in time
I recently flashed stunner 5.0 and am very pleased with this rom.. I dunno if it's stunner-related or not..
Anyone else experiencing this?

I completely restarted from stock GB before rooting again / flashing ics.. did it twice already .. so I don't think it'll work if I try it a third time...

Sounds like an SOD. It is very common with ICS Roms and currently there isn't really a proper fix for it. Essentially, your phone is still on, but its screen won't come back on until you reboot/pull battery. Look up SOD or screen of death or some other combination to search for tips on how to improve its reliability
Flash basband lp6 that will fix your sods
Yeah its weird prior to lp5/6 release I had nothing but sod. But with new ics leak I haven't had any sod with stock or custom roms and I think majority of the community hasn't had many if any like the old leaks.
Which apps are you installing? Are you restoring backup data from titanium backup or similar.

Yep.. restoring like 170 apps using titanium backup ... including user data ... could that be the cause?

Here you go mate flash via cwm http://www.mediafire.com/?zuicr1120j54vx9
Do wipes too before just to be on safe side
the restoring apps could be the issue also. Remember that stunner rom, has alot of built in root apps that cover setting up the cpu and such. If the modem doesnt fix it I would suggest starting over fresh with your apps, and seeing if your problem goes away.
Flashed modem.. and my note seems to have survived the night ..
If I get a sod today .. I'll restart from stock later this evening, and manually restore my apps and/or userdata..
Thnx for the advice

One hour and fifteen minute later and had my first sod on LP6..

Seems like CPU governors like setcpu and 2nd core combined with energy saving apps tend to mess things up.. removed them all and flashed baseband radio LP6..
Now running a few hours without SOD's..
Keeping my fingers crossed

i would reccomend Stunner 0.5
just for its power saving options you can control 3g data and Wifi at any time to be turned off automaticly so it saves battery though ROM is quite kind with power, anyway install it clean and then just with any CPU managing application set the settings of CPU to 1400 MAX - 200 MIN and ONDEMAND so it doesn't run constantly on full power and then add a profile for Screen Off and set it to 200 MAX- 200 MIN aply at boot of course checked good luck
I've had SoD's and reboots on imilka's CM9v2 and Stunner 5 beta so when Stunner released 1.4.19 I started completely fresh. I reflashed the LP1 repack with wipe, did another full wipe in CWMR before flashing Stunner 1.4.19, flashed the LP6 modem and did another full wipe. I've been using it for about 20 hours, 14 hours since my last manual reboot and I haven't had a problem yet.
Just flashed the new Stunner 1.4.19 this morning over my existing 5.0 version..
And have not had one SOD since..
Let's hope it stays that way..
I think ics is to early in this stage to restore apps with userdata. Im not talking about xda app, slacker or things of that nature. But restoring things like setcpu, rootexplorer and other root apps could lead into problems. Unless you are very strict about backups.
Happy you got your problem situated.
Hey guys, lucky I found this thread.
I followed this guide as literally as I could: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1763151
But as far as I can tell I am, too, getting a screen of death every now and then. For example, I went to bed last night and left my phone with 70% battery, this morning, 8 hours later, I found it with 22%. When I checked the battery graph (I would post a SS but I cant use the stylus for that and dont know any apps for the job ATM) I found a "gap" between 70% and 22%, its like nothing was there. So Im tempted to believe that it is, in fact, a SoD.
I've read the experiences of this previous user but I cant really figure out what it is im supposed to do to fix my note. I am using CM9 (latest nightly) and would like to continue doing so, is there a way for me to fix the SoD without changing roms?? I am not a m4d h4xx0r on this subjet, but I manage and I can follow a clearly laid out guide as good as anyone.
I would hate to waste your time, so if you could please be extra clear when explaining whatever procedure I must follow it would be awesome.
If anyone could help me out on this subject you would have my humble thanks!
Galaxy Note 2 shuts off
The issue exists on the Galaxy Note 2 as well and has nothing to do with software.
The problem is hardware related. The phone is flawed and shuts off on it's own under various conditions, all hardware related. Take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjLn2yikYnI
Also, take a look at this site I built that goes in to more detail regarding the issue: www.GalaxyNote2ShutsOff.com
One look at that short video and I am sure there will be some light bulbs going off. Be sure to read the details I provided on that site as well. They go in to detail about the problems that I have had and the lack of proper support that Samsung is willing to provide.
