Galaxy S II tear down - Galaxy S II General

Some may find this interesting, if a little disturbing!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKztg1ra4-0&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Ooh very cool!
I'd love to see iFix it do the tear down and perhaps a comparison between the NFC/NFC-free versions to see just why the chip was left out and why the extra bulk is there.

thats a damn thin chip!

Ahh I saw this earlier and it made me feel sick.
I know I'd end up losing one of the screws if it was me!

Talk about precision.... This device is truly crafted with in depth expertise.

This was great shows you how to, open it up if you want to paint the device or something.
Does anyone know what type of plastic is used on the sgs2?

I would never be able to do this... Guy must either be really confident or really rich...
But amazing space usage. The huge cluster up top explains why the heating up is almost unnoticeable at the bottom of the phone.

Thanks for posting this,,, going to have to double my dose of high blood pressure meds after watching! And remember once again to breathe.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaah,
Wouldn't do that with my (soon to come) new sgs II
But nice vid, seems easier then sgs itself.

I'd love to see what GPS chip is inside there...

that's a sexy phone inside and outside!

Atrix "CPU" heatsink... crasy ?

Hi all,
So now, we reach 1.5GHz and... too much temp° !!!
My idea is the following :
-The CPU is located there : (yellow square)
See photo 1
-That mean at the opposite side, there : (red square)
See photo 2
-If I made a hole there and there : (red squares)
See photo 3 and 4
-I can glue a little modded headsink (for graphic card for ex photo 5) on the metal part saw on photo 2 with http://www.arcticsilver.com/ta.htm.
What do you think about it ?
I think your phone doesnt need to be able to play crysis 2 yet. It's a phone.

I laf'd.
@OP-
really? if you want to hardware mod, by all means rock on. but at the end of the day, you still have a phone. its only a phone. by overclocking it to hell you are making its life a lot shorter, even with a heatsink. Whats the point of pushing it to the max like that? Are you really that anal you need those extra thousands of a second to launch an app? Again, I agree with the dude above me. We arent PC gaming here...
Also, consider what you are doing by hacking up the case- opening it to outside contaminants (dust/dirt, lint, moisture). You are taking a sealed body and putting a gaping hole in it. Then to seal it back would end up looking super ghetto. Anyone ever seen silicon on a phone to fix a hackjob? Yeah, it looks like you need to drop a bill or two and upgrade cause you broke your shiz.
its like making your civic(insert other ricer car) run 12's- it may be fast, but its still just a civic (and now an unreliable one as you've modded it to holy hell).
There is already a huge thread about this same idea and ways to get extra cooling. Search next time and you will find it.
In the Atrix forum?
Sorry I haven't see it...

About that replaceable plastic (Sammy) vs unibody (HTC) thing...

First of all I have to say, the Samsung Galaxy S3 looks veeeery good to me.
You want to know why?
1. Unique design, more curvy which definately will give you a better feeling when holding the phone in your hand. Just look at your palm, is it completely flat? I don't think so. Therefore it's easier to hold a curvy S3 in your hand compared to an angular shaped S2. I really think the S3 looks better and gives you more comfort just by seeing the way it's designed.
2. Plastic, it's very sturdy and therefore less damage can happen when it's dropped e.g. to the floor. Drop an iPhone/HTC and get ready to call the service line.
3. Weight, plastic is the way to go if you want a thin and light phone. Some people here sound as if they would like a flipping phone made out of solid osmium (heaviest of all metals)
4. Replaceable components, seriously guys, UNIBODY MY ASS, I want to be able to replace the battery without having to send it to Samsung and wait for the service to fix it. On top of that Unibody doesn't allow you to buy a bigger battery for your phone (though I think the stock 2100 mAh already is good!)
And no SD Card slot like the HTC One X? LOL.
5. Sorry for my english
Those being just some arguments which definately make reasonable why Sammy doesn't choose as same path as HTC/Apple.
Fair points, but I'm still disappointed they went the high gloss route. IMO, if it was matt plastic it would be far more appealing.

Agreed. I personally like the back cover of the Galaxy Nexus. I'm not a fan of high gloss. Some kind of texture would would have been nice.

I find it amusing that people somehow think the HOX is not made of plastic. Polycarbonates are a group of plastics.

It's the same reason why people that own german cars think they have a better quality material eventhough it's the same plastic used in other brands just in different texture
i find it amusing that people think samsung doesnt use metal. the screen is bonded to a cast frame presumably aluminum but maybe magnesium on all the phones i have repaired. remove the battery and scrape the black area underneath with a sharp metal object if you dont believe me. the plastic they use is not only tough and fracture resistant but it's pretty much superficial.
now im sure htc has improved their designs but the evo was toy like in construction. thin cheap plastics and the pcb was a thin single layer design and the copper traces could easily seperate from the board. also the one i repaired had cold solder joints and the spring contacts they used in place or cables were falling off the board.
samsung does things that are frustrating from a development point of view but i never agreed with the quality argument.
well i'm looking forward to the s3 for the audio mostly. but i want to see what challenges the hardware offers aosp development. though i like touch wiz i dont expect samsung to support the device for more than 1 or 2 major updates. i have learned my lesson and will only buy the us version if it is the same hardware profile as the international version. and ill only buy an s3 if the bt and other hardware are aosp friendly.

Can't say I'm disappointed that it is plastic and not metal. He seemed to drone on about the plastic design. Sure plastic shells can scratch easily, but they stand up better over time than metal ones. I've had several devices metal and plastic, and metal always interferes with signal quality and when it bends, it doesn't bend back into place like plastic does. My TF201 looks terrible with all of its dents and scratches but my Evo 3D with its plastic back and only a little bit of metal around the edge is looking decent (except for the metal which is scratched and nicked.)
What is everyone's deal about plastic? A ceramic coating would have been interesting, but we have already seen the coating chipping off on one model of the HTC One series phones.
EDIT: Ok, so I see I wasn't the only person that found the way he complained about the keys and other nitpicking to be a bit biased and annoying.

stay away from ceramic coating!!! good thing Samsung didnt go there.
I sent my 3d htc one s back for a refund and preordered the SGS3 for that reason alone!!
By the way, flimsy plastic? So what? You scratch it and buy a new one, the phone looks like new.
try to do that with an alloy-ceramic phone.... No chance!
Well,PhoneArena's reviews are really good,as long as you don't watch the videos.
Although...iPhone smooth?Nowadays the iPhone is Android smooth. With ICS my Desire HD is smoother than the iPhone 4 of a friend and rivals the 4S.My S2 rapes them both.

I'd have loved it to be HTC Sensation-style,where you can replace the whole housing apart from the screen in the form of a battery cover. That way you just don't give a rat's ass about scratches etc.
Very annoying. Love the phone. Plastic back is better for radio signal. Drop a plastic backed phone and you will get back a scratched but still very much working phone not like a glass backed device. Very easy to tell an I-Phone fan boy. Could not watch or listen to entire video due to the annoying Fan Boy.

Oh wow! Good job
These vids always come in handy, since the screens always break
bad luck on dropping the phone, otherwise great video. will always keep this on favorites incase i ever drop or smash my s3
keep up the videos max
Oh man, that's brutal and informative at the same time.
《tapatalked from galaxy s3》
my only Question is does the screen have to be picked off peice by peice.....because i have a perfect screen on mine. but the bumper is Ratty as hell from all the drops i have done.
can i pull the screen from the housing and re-apply it to a new one without ripping the screen apart like you had to do here?
seems like because of the screen being stuck no matter how much you heat it up it will not just fall out and then how do you stick it back to the NEW housing.....?
Max,
Bummer dude, But you have managed to turn this into a positive for so many others and I thank you for that. WoW

Since my son as broken his screen and I replacet it, I thought I would share my experience
There are TWO types of replacement kit you can buy for the SIII. The one on this video contains the glass, lcd and digitizer, and you have to deal with the very complex part of removing the old one from the frame.
But that's not how it is supposed to be done. There is a Samsung part that contains the bezel as well, and this is what you really want. The part number is GH97-13630A for a blue SIII (and I think B for a white one). You can google it to find vendor accros the globe.
The screen, digitizer,... all come attached to the metallic frame, and replacing it is much much easier than having to get the heat out . As a side comment, the big white label behind the battery can be transfered easily to the new frame as well, it does come off pretty easily.
Hope this helps (but don't break your SIII is even a better advice !)

Hi, Maybe this should be in the accessories section but I did it myself, It's not much and I know that so not criticism unless it is constructive please.
This isn't criticism.
What exactly is the advantage to having that "ring" (for lack of a better term) around just the face of the phone? It seems like it would be more useful around the back of the phone.

There is what is called "bumper cases" which are pretty much just a ring to protect the corners and make a small gap between the screen and the floor or any level horizontal surface so if you drop it, it will hopefully not break your phone screen or corners. This one fails a bit at the later but I imagine keeps the corners slightly protected.
Ok

OK, I really hope that wasn't sarcasm because I have watched too much of the big bang theory to notice sarcasm anymore lol!!!
My Dad actually works in the cellphone case business so I may actually have some good insight, the one real popular feature as of late is the incorporation of a wallet into the case. So if you could work that with a bumper in an otherwise then accessory that would be pretty awesome
