Is there a way to disable the cell radio in this phone? I'm going to another country, but want to use WiFi Calling.
I've currently got CM7 installed. If I turn on airplane mode, and then WiFi, the WiFi calling app doesn't allow any calls to be made.
I basically want wifi enabled but NO cell radio connection.
Thanks!
All you have to do is make sure "data roaming" is turned off and not have the "World Class International Rate" feature on your line. You can double check this but without the feature your calling doesn't work in another country but WIFI calling does.
You can do this with a sip account and Google voice call back you need to be on gingerbread. Sipgate is good here the thread you can be on airplane mode and still received calls with wifi on here's how to do it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887131

Apparently this doesn't work anymore because PBXes.org is no longer doing free accounts for Google Voice trunks.

Use sipgate method I use it. As I only have a data plan on my phone

wouldn't airplane mode disable the cell connection?
He said he only want to do wifi calling with sipate you don't need a cell connection if you have wifi connected it is voip. You can also do this with a data plan but he would need to have data in the area he is at. So he would need to have it enabled.

Everything's in German and I can't even figure out how to register on the Sipgate website.
I actually figured something out last night.
I can use Wi-Fi Calling to dial my Stateside GV number, then use that to dial a Canadian #. To get VM, they already go to my GV inbox, so that makes it easy. For inbound, I suppose I would have to be connected to Wi-Fi for the incoming GV #.
Another good question, does the Wi-Fi calling app also take care of texts?

I can see why you'd use it but for someone that has a voice plan on their line then they'd be better off using the stock WIFI calling app. Your suggestion is just adding complication to something that is simple.

I am a customer service rep with T-mobile and yes you can. Here's a link to FAQ for WIFI calling and the T-mobile press kit for Android WIFI calling. Both links state explicitly that SMS is available with WIFI calling.
http://support.t-mobile.com/doc/tm24195.xml
http://newsroom.t-mobile.com/articles/t-mobile-android-wifi-calling
Also, there are people on the T-mobile forums that can validate that SMS does work over the WIFI.
if you're asking if texts work while on UMA calling then yes it does work.
I use UMA everyday at home since I have no reception and it does everything

isn't UMA and wifi calling the same? T-mobile used to use UMA for phones such as the nokia 6301b, HTC Shadow II, etc. But now it's called wifi calling on my mt4g. I've always still called it UMA

With T-mobile, they are the same thing. Wifi calls on the bill will show the symbol "(U)" for UMA/Wifi calling.

Is there any chance the Skype mobile apk file could be modified to work on T-Mo network?
Of course this thread might get the easy answers such as:
1) "No"
2) "It cant be done"
3) "It checks verizon's network?"
... but I'd be happier to hear from experts that know how it actually works/could be done.
Verizon skype apk: http://www.sendspace.com/file/rnwab1
No. It cant be done. It checks verizon's network.
Ok, helpful now... There's no need for Skype mobile.
Using it to call normal phone numbers uses minutes. The only free part is using it to call other Skype numbers. And you can already use Fring or Sipdroid from the Market to do this (AND do VoIP calls to normal numbers), so the Skype mobile app for Verizon is pretty much just crap.

Yeah your right it is pretty crappy that Skype put those restrictions on it by sleeping with the enemy (Big Red).
I was just going to see if it could work on T-Mo though because then I could get my family members to use it as well and make good quality voip calls like I could on the iPhone version.
SIPdroid is dear to my heart but the quality on outbound calls is pretty unusable for me, inbound is still good though. I tell all my friends that "if you get a call from me, dont pick up and just call me back."
Fring 3g quality was serviceable before but it was laggy (I would say something and the other person would start talking and then mid sentence would hear what I said and it would mess up the conversation). It probably has had some updates though so I will try it out again.
dunno if this helps but i read somewhere today that vonage is coming to tmobile and att with calls over wifi capability.
3 has got this for a long time now (no Android client yet) but the acctual calling is routed using a gsm center, no VOIP at all. I have installed the apk for t-mobile and it almost does the same thing ( it doesn't work outside tm network)

Just checked the Market. Vonage is there.
It looks like free USA calls, but only over wifi.

So maybe you have to pay $5 a month for "free" wifi calls. I don't get it. Anyone tried it yet?

Thanks for the info you guys! I've made 3 calls over WiFi with Vonage app and the customer service reps say I sound crystal clear
Now for the real challenge boys... Since Vonage can make free domestic calls over wifi. How do we trick the N1, like on jailbroken iPhone's, into thinking its on wifi even if its on 3g?
Edit: The wifi calling is 100% free, dont add any money even if the app asks you for it (just press the back button to get rid of the prompt)

How do you KNOW it was making calls over wifi?
I just signed up and installed it, and no matter what I do, it always calls from my normal phone number, rather than my Google Voice number, which is what I chose during the sign up process.
Also, turning Airplane mode on and then turning Wifi on doesn't let me make any calls. It says disable airplane mode.
Is there a way to KNOW 100% whether the call is being routed over wifi or normal phone?

On my end I can guarantee that its making the calls through WiFi because of the data only plan I am on. T-Mo has two different types of $40/mo data plans:
1) $40/mo with T-mo hotspot access but cannot make ANY calls (except 911)
2) $40/mo without T-mo hotspot access but can make calls for $.10/min
I have the first option and if I try to make a regular call it says "the service you are attempting to use has been restricted or unavailable" and hangs up. Even if I try to make a call through GVoice it says the same thing so I know I cant make any cellular calls. But I can make a call through the Vonage app with WiFi (although I do have to have on Edge/3g with the WiFi your right).
I just checked my T-Mobile account as well and I dont see any minutes used either.
Now if only we can get this thing to think its on WiFi even if only on 3g!

A few times the Vonage dialer has popped up (if I had GV set to make ALL calls), but then Vonage crashed (Force Close).

Calls with GV android still go out over a standard cellular network so therefore this doesn't work in the case where you have no network access. An alternative is to use a SIP service in combination with GV which is terribly unreliable (I can speak from experience of using a variety of SIP services, et.al) and also uses a different telephone number which isn't ideal in my case. Thank you for the suggestion though.

Unfortunately yes it does take away from your minutes. T-Mobile decided to get rid of the '$20 unlimited wifi calling package' in exchange for the new UMA service. Its primary purpose now is to provide service where there isn't any and/or to allow customers traveling internationally to make phone calls using their plan minutes over wifi--completely avoiding the need for an overseas phone/plan.

WIFI Calling takes your call from anywhere in the world and routes it back to the states as if you were next to a T-Mobile tower. This doesn't mean that you can call a number that would be classified as roaming at no cost. For example, if you are in a London hotel and connect your phone via wifi to call a local London restaurant for reservations, this would be considered an international phone call. However, if you just call your friends and family with their US based area codes, you would just be using your minutes.

Has anybody been able to get WIFI calling to work on TMOUS, NAND?
Doesn't seem that the Devs really care about this. It's hard to even find any info. I wish this could be done as Then I could replace my wife's blackberry with UMA with my Spare HD2.
I see one dev who seems to care. Check here:

Notice where it says:
Coming Soon:
Kineto GAN interface(based on CM kernel style to help work on T-Mo US Wifi Calling)
Kineto is the company that created an app that can do wifi calling for certain android phones and the app was (I think) successfully ported to the Nexus One. It doesn't do cell tower to wifi handoffs because that is apparently a chip-based feature and this is purely a software solution.

apart from the voip/wifi option outlined earlier, vzw apparently has international cdma roaming agreements for voice in over 40 countries... Mostly americas, asia and pac rim but not in europe. I've used a vzw phone in mexico from time to time, but cdma networks are still relatively rare outside the usa (but there's more out there than I thought).

My fascinate went to montreal with me last year and worked fine. Had to get my data plan switched to an international one (i think it was about $65 instead of 30), but the rep I talked to said there was nothing they could do for voice or text. So, I had to pay per minute and text while I was there. Luckily it was travel for work, so they covered the extra expense while I was there
Google voice was still free in canada (it should still be I think?), so I used my laptop a lot to make calls in the evenings.

I don't have enough posts to enable links, but here is Verizon's website that shows CDMA roaming rates for voice and text:

A similar question was asked on the Skype forums, and here was the answer supplied by one of the staff:
Your fascinate is using Skype Mobile for Verizon and your iPhone is using Skype for iOS. Skype Mobile uses cell minutes to connect calls and can not be used to place calls to US landlines or cell phones as this will be charged by verizon.
If you fascinate has Android 2.2 you could put Skype for Android on this and it would work almost the same way as the iPhone except it cant use 3G

No I mean a little bit like TabletTalk, where it connects to your phone for example.
I don't mind whether its VoIP or whatever, I just want to be able to make a call from my Nexus7, that uses my phones number.

Thanks for your reply mate,
On the Video I saw it was using some sort of VoIP and used the N7's mic, no bluetooth mic needed.
I know that the connection goes through the phone which is fine, as how else would it get the number etc, but I don't want to buy a bluetooth headset.
It may have been GrooveIP but I think thats US only any UK alternatives?
THANKS !
EDIT - It was GrooveIP, what is the difference between GrooveIP and tablet talk?
As tablet talk is made by an XDA user and would love to support them rather than a company.
I've used groove IP on my phone and it does work in Canada but the sound can be glitchy. You have to sign in through Google to set it up, haven't tried it on nexus though.

It is possible to call from SIM if you have a N7 with 3G.
Some Internet providers have also an Internet+Voice option that you can enable. With a specific rom or application that can pop dialer I am pretty sure that you can make calls with your Internet/Voice SIM. I didn't activate the option but I did activate an Internet + Messages option and sending / receiving them work like a charm. I'm pretty sure with a Voice subscription you can do that too, but do keep in mind, if you have a SIM slot.

Can any1 provide a UK alternate to Groove?
Why is it US only?

It is US only because of the laws that GrooveIP must follow. It is the same reason Google Voice is so hard to deal with, because Google provides it for free but has to dodge some laws here and there. Google may require payment after 2013 (they have secure 2013 as free, though).
Sprint released an update yesterday for their S5's which enables WiFi calling. That got me thinking and after poking around in settings.db to see if the toggle existed in our notification panel, i found it is - "WifiCalling". Im wondering if anyone is up to digging into the code of the Sprint phone and seeing if it could be modified to work on the VZW.
Forgive the improper use of "Whose" in the title, it should be "Who's"

im sure those without unlimited minutes might benefit from this

I know I'd benefit. I still have old plan with unlimited data. I don't talk on the phone much, but I'd still like to have it

I have a feeling some of this will be server-side reliant and we won't be able to use it until Verizon says so.
Is this the same as ASOP VoIP account in dialer?
Id like to to add my SIP account to my phone, which is in stock CM11 Dialer

Those who find themselves in areas with weak cellular reception would as well.

Correct. WiFi calling isn't something we could simply activate on our phones. Verizon has to support it in order for the calls/texts to be properly routed, and as far as I know they don't (outside of using a network extender).
The Verizon messages app supports texts over wifi so this feature must already be partially enabled

I use Google Voice, paired with a free pbxes.org account and Sipdroid on my phone. Calls work just fine this way using my google voice line. Incoming and outgoing. It's like having a second line that just uses data. Sipdroid allows me to specify usage by placing a + in front of the phone number. This prevents me from needing to switch back and forth between default dialers or wait for it to prompt me, which messes up handsfree calling in the car.
