Official announcement from google:
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=3812c1acf93b482f&hl=en
Although not all of you have Android 2.3.3 yet, we’re happy to announce Android 2.3.4. This new version introduces an exciting new feature, and also addresses some bugs. We’ve already started sending Android 2.3.4 to Nexus S and Nexus One phones around the world, so if you’ve got one of those phones you should receive an automatic over-the-air update within a few weeks.
If you haven’t received 2.3.3 yet, 2.3.4 will introduce you to several new features such as Google Maps 5.1 with 3D, Voice Search 2.1.1 with Voice Actions and personalized voice search, and the latest version of Google Books.
New feature: video chat in Google Talk
Previously only available to tablet users on Android 3.0, Google Talk with video and voice chat is now available on Android phones running 2.3.4 that have front-facing cameras, starting with Nexus S. For more information please see our blog post:
http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2011/04/video-chat-on-your-android-phone.html
Bug fixes for Nexus S & Nexus One
- Phone shuts down or reboots: a very small percentage of users reported this problem, which is fixed with the latest release. (Nexus S)
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=44db6d8e31129d4c
- Wi-fi & 3G icons both indicate active: for anyone who saw this strange behavior in your phone’s status bar, it should now be fixed. (Nexus S)
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=62b9e23a049f4ef0
- Battery life: some users let us know that their batteries didn’t seem to be lasting as long; battery life should be improved for these folks. (Nexus One)
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=5d1a4878e4ace375
- GPS location/navigation: some Nexus One users who noticed location and navigation problems after updating to 2.3.3 should notice improved location accuracy. (Nexus One)

maybe that's already a fix for something even more awful...
what about 1. call delay? 2. screen going black? 3. launcher bugs? 4. flickering app drawer? 5. keyboard bug? (not showing char popup 'til reboot) 6. wifi sleep policy bug? (turn off with screen draining battery) etc !!!
and this SPECIAL "coming weeks" of google is more like a joke!
edit: did I mention no more working trackball?

Not officially. It is only for android phones with 2.3.4 with front facing cameras.
I'm willing to see how 2.3.4 is in hopes that they actually fixed more than those listed, but I've been half tempted to go back to Froyo because of these issues. Plus since it looks like I could still use the new GTalk app, its even more tempting. Froyo seemed to work great for me.

That post was on Google's Help Forum. It is probably only addressing a few of the issues that were popular there. I doubt it is a full list of the changes.

Yes, that is plenty big enough for bug fixes.
The more bug fixes the better for our amazing & enduring Nexus One's!
does anyone know where i can get a .zip of the 2.3.4 update? The only available now is for Nexus S.
I received the OTA but I rejected it cause I still had a custom rom. By the time I restored to stock, it no longer notifies me for an update even with the *#*# check in

Still no update being rolled out for Nexus One. Thanks Google, it's the "next few weeks" nonsense all over again.

well, the "next few weeks" you're referring to are from the statement in which they announced when the gingerbread _will be_ available. now they said the 2.3.4 ota is available and is being rolled out (progressively) during the next few weeks. So, if you're at the end of their roll out queue...
sif ffc is the only way to video chat..
they better bring it to all devices, although fring/qik are pretty nice but native gtalk is always better.
black screen when SMS, no popup char... are fixed. what i need!!!!!
Thanks Google.

Should be interesting. Also, I had not heard of a ViewSonic phone before this article, and I am not sure if I am liking its design.
Nonetheless, based on what you said, it's good to see others come along and hopefully compete with Samsung, especially since so many people do not like or want a Samsung phone - other than to have Samsung's beautiful phone screen.

we on SNS got 2.3 before any body else
including the old HTC N1 which are still stuck on 2.2 officially
unofficial ROM cooks of course released 2.3
so chances are we'll see the same with 2.4 or 3.0

I've seen two(2) videos showing 2.4 in the NS.
One of them showed 2.4 build GRI06B.
I'm not sweating...
Look in the I9023 thread.
Worst case: more fragmentation with I9020 2.3 and I9023 with 2.4...both being NS. haha

Well, the way they're treating N1 owners right now is rubbing me the wrong way, but I'm willing to give them benefit of the doubt. In fact, they could be just waiting till 2.4 is ready to give it to both Nexus 1 and Nexus S. We buy the Nexus phones partly because we are supposed to be given updates on a first priority basis. If Google decides to hold back 2.4 from us for another phone, they will have lost an Android supporter in me.

I'd be shocked if we didn't get the 2.4 update, at the time of its launch. Especially since 2.4 doesn't seem to be Ice Cream, but rather a touch of Honey glazed over Gingerbread.
While I am kind of new to Android (and smart phones in general), I cannot see Google keeping this update from us NS users. Although, I am a little surprised that the N1 hasn't seen Gingerbread yet (OTA from Google that is).
Just curious, how many updates did the N1 get from the time of its launch, and what Android version did it start with (Eclair or Froyo?).
I'm really surprised the N1 hasn't seen GB officially yet. I would be curious to see 2.4

Check out this article from Android Headlines,
http://androidheadlines.com/2011/02...pril-google-kills-2-3-gingerbread-update.html
Google has almost regularily done two updates a year. That doesn't mean they've 'killed' 2.3, in the same way that 2.3 didn't kill 2.2.
HTC has always been ~6 months late with their updates. So people will get 2.3 when 2.4 is released, and 2.4 when the next is released. etc. etc. Of course, other manufacturers are different.
Rampant speculation. Calling shens on that. They'll be sure to get some hits on their website with that headline though.
"Has anyone found news about 2.4 for us???"
Prepare.
speculation: ice cream is just a guess
Personally I believe that Google was planning on releasing 2.3 as Gingerbread (beyond just the Nexus S) and something changed their minds. Hence the delay for the N1.
So they are making some changes / improvements / whatever and are going to push 2.4 out as the widely released Gingerbread.

Yeah there was a delay, but Google did release 2.3 as Gingerbread already. They can have two version with the same codename e.g. Eclair (2.0/2.1). Coincidentally 2.0 was only ever released to one device before 2.1 came out a few months later.
You know, who knows but I do find it odd that we haven't gotten an OTA yet.
I think they know they screwed up with dual cores and lack of tablet support with the new devices coming to light in coming weeks. They are forced to rush honeycomb to market to keep up. Now they don't want to release 2.3 because its useless.
Supposedly 2.4 will be keep devices from separating the android market keeping apps compatible with all the latest versions before they release anything as upgrades.

If that article is accurate, that means even more waiting... while i'm certainly not going to switch to a different platform, other people might do so (read: switch to iCrap Phones).
*coff coff* April *coff coff*
BTW, if this news is TRUE, it means 2.3 has been something like 2.0 on the Milestone, never exit for all the other phones, do you remember?
Good news!
I didn't like so much 2.3, it doesn't have any major UI difference over 2.2 nor new major goodies
I'm only assuming they're adding a few things to 2.4, like perhaps Google Music, hardware acceleration and dual core support. From there they will release 2.4 as Gingerbread(like how eclair was 2.0, and 2.1), then we see updates from manufacturers based on the 2.4 build.
I think one of the reasons of gingerbread delay has to do with the "wonkiness" issue when making/receiving phone call

The 'Very Soon' didn't really sound like 'In a couple days'. I may agree with above. About 2-4 weeks is my prediction (purely speculation)
If I bought a GE I'd almost feel like I got duped - considering the major selling point was the timely stock updates.
2-4 weeks is timely compared to how it works now.

It does suck for those who actually got fooled with the GPe devices. It SHOULDN'T take them that long as they clearly have been working on it since the leaks have surfaced. I'm just ready to laugh when we see a partially working AOSP 4.3 build up before HTC releases the official OTA.

Well it only has been a couple hours since they announced it. The whole point of the GE was to get updates similar to the Nexus devices and if HTC can at least release it this week i will be happy . If not, this (sadly) is my last HTC phone as i have had several bad experiences with them already (but that is a whole different topic).
My window to return is today, so I may opt to return it, in favor of waiting to see what the Moto X announcement will be.
If that turns out to be a mediocre device then I may just opt to hop back on the One.
My biggest issue is paying $640 and not getting updates for weeks, but as already said here, it's only been a few hours lol.
4.3 doesn't sound like much of an update. A lot of little stuff, not much of which will be apparent to the user unless you let your kids use your phone all the time.
How fast this gets rolled out to the GE phones is not something to get exercised about, IMO.

To be honest i don't think the Moto X will be any better as far as updates go. It will most likely ship with 4.3, but it is also a big step back as far as specs go (according to the leaked spec sheets)

I'd be willing to put my money on CyanogenMod or AOKP having 4.3 out first. However, the whole point of the Google Editions was to get an almost Nexus experience. If HTC takes more than two or three weeks, it's a complete fail.

I am really curious about the 4.3 AOSP update, maybe some 4.2.2 AOSP bugs will get ironed out automatically since it has a bunch of driver updates and a new bluetooth stack (read -> BT incall issues).

Totally agree anything but a very fast update from both Samsung or HTC will only further piss off customers who brought it thinking they would get more timely updates.
Nice and easy if you want the fastest updates get a nexus or a custom rom nothing else comes close imho.

Exactly. I want a stock 4.3 kernel that "just works" and I don't want to worry about problems. I don't mind waiting a few weeks for it. 4.3 isn't even a big update.
I have a Google Edition and paying $640 for a phone, you'd expect them to at least have some kind of announcement of when that will be rolled out. If it will take weeks, I can deal with that, but not knowing is not making me happy either.
I knew going into it that it wouldn't be instant, but I also didn't expect it to be a non-existent date like any other update.
I'm strictly speaking OTA btw, and not custom roms.

I'm sure we'll get it soon :good: I emailed HTC and they gave a generic response (as expected). But we'll just have to hold tight.
Dear Brandon,
Thank you for contacting HTC Tech support.
I am really happy to hear you belong to the HTC Family.
We know that the 4.3 software version was already released and we enthusiatclly can say that Google editions will be getting this update first than other devices.

Brandon, once again let me congratulate you for your HTC One Google edition. I wish you a wonderful day!

At least they say that GE Ones will get 4.3 before Sense Ones. I assume it's less work for them given how similar the GE ROM is to the Nexus ROMs vs all the extra crap they have to update with Sense.
The question is how much HTC will prioritize the GE phones, given that it must be a small percentage of the Ones they sold (little do they know that quite a few of the "Sense" phones people bought have been converted to "GE" phones ).

Yeah, I was mostly kidding. My point is more that, while they probably know, they will act like they don't know (refuse to acknowledge or support converted phones).
Especially because they will have to make assumptions about the number of phones out there running Sense vs GE and will likely do that purely based on sales numbers (which don't take into account any converted phones).
The HTC One, will for sure be behind on updates considering the Nexus is the Google line. Nexus first then S4 then the One. Money market system.. we all know Apple and Samsung lead that pack.. HTC is behind Sammy. That's how I will see it coming.

That's completely ridiculous. Even without having to adapt Sense or go through a kafka-esque certification process like Verizon certification, HTC still needs to perform integration testing before issuing the update. Any joe blow can hack together an untested build and put it out on the net.
Will we see Android 5.0 in this fall? What's new with android 5? If Google releases it in this fall, I wonder why they released android 4.3 last week.

Yep, my sources confirmed it will launch on October 25th at 10:25 AM PST - also it adds the ability to run iOS and blackberry apps (believe it or not!)
Also my sources said google released 4.3 last week just to trick the general population into thinking 5.0 is not coming.
:good:
I think Google has it ready but is just trolling us. Everyone was way too excited so they sent out a minor update. Lol

No 5.0 will not come, they will update gradually until about 4.5 or so and it will be Jelly Bean all that way. Then after that it will be 5.0. Since google is moving all their features to apps in playstore they have no need for major updates instead they can keep doing these small.

How generic. Most of us suffer no lag.
-Sent from Marino's One-
I experience more lag when I use my mother's 4S or my girlfriend's 4S.
And my girlfriend got her 4S new (or probably refurb, it was replaced by warranty) at the same time I got my One.
EDIT: Anyway, back on topic. I actually thought the OP was a troll haha. I actually didnt hear about Android 5 at all yet.

How would you know? youve got an iphone
Considering some people are still on 4.1.2 waiting on 4.2.2 and even the Google Edition hasn't received 4.3 yet, I think it's a bit premature to have a thread with wild speculation about an Android iteration that's likely many months away for this device.
