Cannot root encrypted tab - Acer Iconia A500

Must wipe tab in setting and start from scratch for root to work. . . Not sure what will happen if I encrypt now that's it rooted. . .

Interesting, but makes sense I guess...
I will confirm that I rooted, fixed wpa_supplicant, THEN encrypted and all is well.

Thanks.
Please clarify though u are confirming that root then crypto works or you are about to confirm?
Whats the story on wpa? I am having occasional wifi dropouts
Sent from my A500 using Tapatalk

i was trying to root it from yesterday but when i saw your post.. i tried it.. i wiped it and it worked fine..

Yeap works here also
Only problem you cannot use pattern to unlock encryption, nor can you re enable it for lockscreen bummee.
Also the encryption password can on be 16 characters or less and can be changed on the fly, so I really wonder how strong the encryotion is.

I rooted my A500 using the modified ginerbreak apk whilst it was still encrypted and haven't had any problems other than the first reboot after rooting took a very long time compared to normal

I was saying it worked beautifully for me. I am rooted then encrypted with no complications.
No wifi issues here, even before I replaced wpa_supplicant. It holds solid to both my home wireless and my cellphone ad-hoc with no trouble.
If you have an older access point, it may be time to upgrade. I was forced to upgrade when I got a Wii - it's wireless would constantly cause my access point to reboot. Most consumer grade access points / routers are crap. I replaced mine with a DWL-3200AP. Doesn't have that fancy "n" stuff, but really, when your Internet is less than 1/4 the speed of your wireless network, does it really matter? Just an opinion, I know it matters to some people moving large files locally.

Hi guy. I updated the kernel from the forum here, next encrypted and now:
- root apk doesn't work (it hangs up)
- I loose language and time settings at every reboot
Any suggestion?
Thanks

Calls for Devs, Euroxoom?

Guys, Euroxooms are becoming expensive paperweights pretty quickly.
The boot image is what is bricking the devices as its not compatible when Root is being done.
Obviously we take the risks when we root, but im slightly PO with it Just kidding, i have faith in XDa and i hope to donate soon for such a worthy cause.
My question I pose to the devs is the following, Can someone source out a boot.img to recover back to Stock, for the Mz601 model? (3g / wifi Euro variant)
I see all the recovery and root for the Verizoom, but nothing for our Europe brothers here
Has there or is there, any work being done on recovering bricked devices?
A shot into the dark here .... have you attempted flashing the US system image?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
I rooted my UK Xoom without problems but when I tried one of the BigDX Xoom themes I got loads of Force Closures.
I had no option but to flash the boot.img and system.img files taken from the Canadian (MZ604)
At least this recovered my Xoom to a working version and now works fine now running a rooted Xoom with the latest Tiamat Xoom 1.4.0 kernel.
I have now made a Nandroid backup using ClockworkMod Recovery should I have problems in the future.
Hopefully, someone will pull the recovery.img, boot.img and system.imf files from the UK Xoom???
Cheers

WAIT
Guys be patient, I have a stock system and boot image for us, we just need to get a recovery, DO NOT ROOT using the methods here, I will post a rooted boot for euro as soon as I can get it tested.
I have asked the people posting the root instructions to mention that it should not be used on the euro xoom's but it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

I'm just re-iterating for everyone else who wasn't there
may i suggest that the Devs sticky this for the benefit of the European Xoom.
I bricked mine, bought in york, took to Portsmouth CPW and they replaced it there and then, you might not be so lucky, but i think we need to be careful with bricking it lol ,
On a lighter note, how do we dump our roms with boot, system image files, for the benefit of all those who want to unbrick their uk / euroxooms?
How did you brick your Xoom? You did'nt try and relock it? As I said no problems rooting my Xoom from PCWorld? PUP!!!!

yep i did lock it and put a buggered boot.img on there
any update on the Euroxoomroot? xd

That'll explain it! I may be wrong but to re-lock it, you would need to flash UK image files (boot.img, recovery.img and system.img). I'll leave my UK Xoom unlocked and rooted until Motorola release a proper recovery flash file?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
haha, yeah might be a good idea, you have a DHD too? XD, what you running on it ?
im currently on CM 7.0.2 xd , nice phone :_),
How did you get your root on your tab? i am desperate to root it as TitBAckup is a necessity xd plus i want to experiment, do you think its worth waiting till the files for the Eurotab are released?
When i try to boot my tab after the one click root, it was at that point it was bricked, i didnt try to lock it until after ,
weirdly enough though, i could still use fastboot after to do one click root, etc, and lock and unlock and install CWM,
Yep DHD running HDMix Gingerbread! To be honest I don't think you bricked your xoom if you can still get Fastboot? I don't know why one click root didn't work for you but did for me? That said Titanium isn't working for me with the latest Tiamat 1.4.0 kernel.
Also just to say my UK Xoom is WiFi only (not 3g) might explain why I could root mine?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
yeah if you have a wifi only xxom, thatll explain why you have bee able to use the 604 canadian images.
Quick question for you EU zone Xoom wifi owners... on the back of your device where the CE mark is, does it also list an FCC ID? If so what is it?
yes it does, erm, it would vary with the wifi model obviously, ill have alook abd get back to you

I really should have asked if there was a TUV registration number and FCC ID. (CE mark is a certificate of self conformance).
What I was trying to determine is if the hardware between the euro spec wifi xoom and the us spec wifi xoom are the same. If they are then both units could share the same fcc id. In theory the wifi Xoom could hold both a TUV ID, and FCC ID since there is in theory no need to make engineering changes between the units to meet compliance regulations, and because of the costs involved most companies tend not to make engineering changes if they do not need to.
The 3G units will obviously have variations because of the different Rx/Tx frequencies for the various cellular carriers, but
My WiFi FCC ID Number is IHDT56MT1

[SOLUTION] Virtual operator & Roaming sign

Hi,
Some latest ROMs based on JVP, JVQ and JVR have one defict: With virtual operator there is a roaming sign, and the operation mode shows, that the phone is in roaming. Like mine I9000 in Finnish "Saunalahti".
The solution is to:
1. Put into folder "/system/etc" the file "spn-conf.xml" using your favorite method (ADB / root / etc.).
2. Reboot the phone.
Thanks, man! Solved my problem w/ Saunalahti
Any tips how to get this to work with MIUI rom? I'm also on Saunalahti and suffering from this virtual operator issue. I tried to copy that file to my /system/etc folder and reboot but the roaming sign just won't go off.
Same problem here, MIUI doesn't obey this option. I started a thread about this, so now it's just waiting
Problems also with ICS (beta1 by onecosmic) too. I can get the operator name to change, but fake_home_on part doesnt work.
Quite nice otherwise though..
Does anyone know the codes for USA TMobile?
I have a GT-I9000 international and it keeps the little R on the Operator.
Thanks!

Saunalahti, XXJVU-rom, roaming fixed
Thank you so much!
Updated my Samsung Galaxy S to XXJVU after some failed attempts at ICS.
Had gotten hold of some version, where my favoured Scandinavian keyboards wasn't optional either. I set the correct APN, but the "R"(roaming) wouldn't disappear.
Got internet connection when I had roaming enabled, not otherwise.
Checked my online-billing statistics from my operator, Saunalahti. Stats updates very often
and it stated I had been using my own connection for a couple of minutes,
all OK so far, but I don't want to have roaming enabled...
Transferred the file into /system/etc/ with Root Browser-app, got the phone rooted already.
Rebooted.
R disappeared, no roaming, 3G working.
Checked my statistics again. Minutes, kb:s had been ticking on my monthly flat rate.
Just as it should be.
By the way, in system/etc/ I found another file: apns-conf.xml , listing some apn-carriers,
but, in my case, mainly Asian or Brazilian, no sign of anything close to Scandinavia.
Maybe it also could be possible to replace that one with a correctly localised version?
But these spnOverrides worked for me, so I'm happy, thanks!
Just wanted to inform that CM9 now has an option to enable national roaming only. In my case (Telfort NL) it got rid of the annoying R Don't know about other ICS roms...
Also using kf1 or kb3 radios helps.

Mount as r/w.
If you are on ics, the spn-fix won't probably work.

I downloaded Mount /system (rw / ro) app and mounted system dir as r/w but it still didn't work. I made the system dir r/w from the app and also from boot. I tried transfering it with Root Browser and Astro both said either failed or access denied or something. I'm running XXJW4 and did CF-Root. Can't understand whats wrong. Is there another way to make system dir r/w or what?
Also when I browse the folders with Root Browser or Astro I find that etc folder before system dir like /etc and also inside the system dir /system/etc. The etc folder seems to have the same files inside both folders but are they the same or is it a bug or what?
Downloaded Super Manager and gave it root access and now it finally worked! it still goes for roaming for a second in boot but thats propably normal. Do still have manually configured your APN? I too have Saunalahti.

Edit your build prop.
If you used an A500 rom you may notice that 3G no longer works... The A500 roms that say 3G is enabled means they use a 3G dongle, NOT the internal modem....

Personaly I think it's possible , you need the 501 build.prop and ril from the system/bin and kernel from the a501,
and in etc/
-permissions/android.hardware.telephony.gsm.xml
-ppp/files from A501
-acer_ril.db
-apns-conf.xml
and you are ready to go I think.
Interesting. I have an idea now,, Thanks Civato
Funny, all I read in the OP was "how do I change the model number of my tab" .
Or did I miss something?
Thanks for all the replies... Before I did the update I checked the ota one first and it was the exact same thing for the 500 as for the 501... I do not use a sim card in my tablet, I just tether data from my phone. I did the update and everything works perfectly... The only thing I want to do is change the model number in the about tablet settings. I know how to access the build prop but I do not want to change any values in order to avoid messing anything up...
Im fairly new to the tablet world so you can call me a no0b.. Hehe. Thank you to everyone though for helping out and paying attention to my post!

[Q] rooting and device encryption sm-n900

Greetings,
Yesterday I decided to root my Note 3 (sm-n900) mainly to remove samsung's bloatware and install afwall.
Just after I rooted my phone with Odin + "CF-Auto-Root-ha3g-ha3gxx-smn900" and went for the first reboot, I noticed that my phone wouldn't boot anymore. After some hair pulling, I decided to wipe the device and after that it booted fine.
Finally I managed to remove %[email protected]! Flipboard and My magazine (a lot of crashes with sms and regular email, but worth removing!). Total happiness and a faster phone!
When I tried to enable encryption on the device, the phone just crashed again (with the same droid logo that appeared on the boot before the wipe). I came here and found some other users talking about rooting + encryption with sm-n900 saying that it's not working. (some reported that kingo method would work, but I really don't feel comfortable with king).
Now I'm downloading the stock rom, and planning to flash the note3 back to original since I have the recipe for T virus on my phone and couldn't allow it to fall on wrong hands
Is this a bug on cf-auto-root or encryption doesn't work with rooting at all? If it's a bug, any ideas of when a fix should be around?
Thanks!
Hi eduardogsilva,
I don't know your device, but I encountered a problem activating encryption on a rooted SM-P900. I'm not sure, but I think it's a general problem with Samsung KitKat devices. So I guess that it should be fine now... Or is there any other issues besides activating encryption?

It'll work, just not 100% - don't be surprised if one day it freaks out on you and doesn't let you unlock it. Happens sometimes, Although, it may be that it'll stay fine for you (luck of the draw) - with root being an exploit, the system is designed to look out for changes and freak out if it spots them.

Well, the important information that I have on my mobile is in sync, the only bad thing would be reinstalling and reconfiguring everything again, so not a big problem in loosing my phone data.
I would love to use a custom rom and completely say goodbye to touchwiz and to the huge bloatware that comes with my phone, but unfortunately, CM for note3 exynos is not available yet.
thanks

WiFi Tether 4.4.4 - Requires Root

This is for anyone who has root on 4.4.4 but also has write protection enabled. (Used SuperSU to keep root through the update).
This app will allow you to enable the native WiFi tether without modifying the system (Which we can't do anyways). I have been using this for about an hour with no issues.
Finally, I didn't make this, I'm just someone who's stuck between places and need WiFi tethering for my job and hate spending money. Use at your own risk of course.

No it does not, it runs a command after the phone is booted that while requiring root to run does not make any actually changes to the system.
Again, I have a 1 for write protection (meaning its enabled) and SuperSU basically stuck in System and have no issues running the app, making WiFi hot spots, and having devices connected to it.
Make sure you have root survival set up as well, I'm not sure if the update would remove root without it but I don't think you would want to take that chance.

I attempted this exploit by you TopSnake ( http://bit.ly/1zz1JOE) and after rebooting my build.prop was deleted and all renamed files were restored to their original state. Was there another exploit you were talking about? This was the only one I could find in the dev section for the latest update.
I do know that you can run a simple command to do what this app does but this app can run on boot up which saves some time.

The OP stated he was write protected, so he can't copy the build.prop over the stock one. My app doesn't write to the system it runs the /system/bin/setprop command to set the property. The build.prop sets the property on boot but after the phone has booted the build.prop is never read again. So replacing it on write protected devices won't work.
