UPDATE to 2.3.4 (rooted) for ALL Nexus S phones - Nexus S General

I DONT TAKE THE CREDIT OF THIS GUIDE. I TAKE THAT FROM A OTHER SITE I HAVE TEST IT ON MY NEXUS S 9020A FROM ROGERS.
Here's an easy way to jump to stock + rooted 2.3.4 for ALL Nexus S phones.
Download this full version of 2.3.3 from Google and place it on your internal storage.
Download the 2.3.4 ( GRI40 to GRJ22) OTA update from Google and place it on your internal storage.
Download the SuperUser package from ChainsDD and place it on your internal storage.
Reboot into recovery, and Nandroid your current system. If you don't do this, and something goes wrong you'll be sorry.
In ClockworkMod recovery, wipe data/factory reset. this may not be needed, but if you boot loop when restarting and have no recovery installed, you'll be SOL. Just do it.
Next flash the f182cf141e6a.signed-soju-ota-102588.f182cf14.zip (the first file you downloaded). Don't exit recovery!
Then flash the a14a2dd09749.signed-soju-GRJ22-from-GRI40.a14a2dd0.zip (the second file you downloaded). Don't exit recovery!
In Clockwork, go to the mounts and storage menu and mount /system and mount /data.
The flash su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip (the third file you downloaded).
Reboot.
When you boot up, you'll be running 2.3.4, and be rooted. But you won't have ClockworkMod recovery any longer. There's two ways to tackle this one.
The easy way, but not permanent:
Go to the Market.
Install Rom Manager.
Flash Clockwork recovery every time you need to boot into it.
The better way, and is permanent.
Using a file browser with root permissions, find /etc/install-recovery.sh in your system.
Rename it to /etc/install-recovery.sh.bak
Go to the Market
Install Rom Manager
Flash Clockwork recovery.

Better way to flash recovery is with "fastboot flash recovery <filename>". Rom Manager doesn't always flash it correctly for some reason, gotta do it more than once sometimes before it will stick.

Some Nexus S's don't have the "install-recovery.sh" script so any changes to the recovery will be permanent on those phones. For example, the ones sold in Canada (i9020a - GRI54).

Also the i9020a user will end up with a useless modem as the radios are different between the roms

I just searched the file names Fizwiz posted on google, you should be able to get dl links from the google servers for the two android files and an xda link for su, and cwm recovery if you need.

@FizWiz Where did you find this guide? what site?

I'm just waiting for my Nexus S to arrive on Tuesday, after having my Nexus One stolen, I'd only just flashed cyanogenMod Nightly #54 and hadn't configured the "find my droid" app so ive had to put it down to experience. Unless anyone can tell me another way of tracking its GPS position?
Now a couple of questions, with it being brand new I dont want to unlock the bootloader and void my warranty on the fist day if I can help it. But will do if its the only way to gain Root.
Does this method work without unlocking the bootloader? I ask as Ive seen that it does on another thread but it says it only workes on 2.3.2?
What version of Android will a UK Orange Nexus S come pre-installed with?
Also with the nexus one it made a difference which screen the phone came with as to wich roms you could flash, that's if my understanding is right. Is this the same with the Nexus S?
One last thing, is buying a Nexus S from Orange UK on contract the same as buying one sim free from google, is it unlocked to all networks, can the bootloader be unlocked the same way, is there any difference at all? (my Nexus One was bought direct from Google).
Sorry for all the questions, I just want to be prepared to Root and unlock the bootloader if absalutaly necessary as soon as it arrives on Tuesday
Thanks in advance for any help..

The nexus s bootloader can be locked and unlocked anytime you want. so dont worry about it. it is not like the nexus 1 where, once u did oem unlock, you could not revert back. this time, google even allows us to oem lock. hehehe.

I'm devastated about some t**t stealing my Nexus One but on the other hand I'm so looking forward to getting My Nexus S and gaining root, flashing a few different ROM's but will probably end up with Cyanogen Nighty's + installing some good Root only Apps.
So how do you lock it, by using ADB and fastboot oem lock

I have put the link to download the file in the first post.

There is an app called "Plan B" on the market. You can install through your browser. What it does is send an email to the google account registered on your phone with the location coordinates. Then you can also text the number with a keyword to get your location details. If I had known about it earlier I would have done the same for my lost/stolen phone before blocking my sim and changing passwords. I would assume it's probably too late for you too. But, this is FYI.

Followed this guide, worked perfect! Just got a brand new Nexus S (i9020T) and it's rooted on 2.3.4
Thanks for posting this!
Quick question - where can I get a file browser with root permissions? Any free ones on the market by any chance?

question ?
I already asked about this at another thread so i apologize for asking again:
As far as i understand this link:
2.3.4 ( GRI40 to GRJ22) OTA update
is the Radio update to GRJ22. can i safly flush it (only it) if i have:
NsCollab-1.0.21(cyanogenMod-7-Nightly-49) ?
please note signature for any other information...

I wanted a nexus s now, just because you guys get Google talk with video chat.

thanks for the guide, i got my phone to boot in 2.3.4 however it seems mines not rooted? something I forgot?

I used an app called Super Manager from the market, it has a root explorer built in. Renamed the install-recovery file, but clockworkmod still doesn't seem to stick permanently. Can anyone tell me which program to use to rename this file so that the recovery doesn't get changed?
Thanks.

Thanks for your reply! I just tried Ghost Commander, but the rename doesn't stick for some reason. The filename stays install-recovery.sh. I'm just holding down the filename in ghost commander and then clicking "rename" in the menu and changing the name to install-recovery.sh.bak, but it doesn't save it.. I'm rooted on 2.3.4, any ideas why this might be happening?

How to Change carrier specific (Videotron) firmware to original Google firmware?

Hey everyone,
I just bought myself a brand-new Nexus One from eBay. I noticed that the Nexus One I have was originally purchased from Videotron in Canada and it has a carrier specific firmware.
Now my phone is currently sitting on Froyo 2.2 and when I checked for update the phone just says no update available.
This is what I see under "Menu-->Settings-->About phone"
Android version : 2.2
Core version : 2.6.32.9-27227-g3c9b0d [email protected] #1
Build number : 2.16.405.1 CL223106 release-keys
The phone never been rooted or hacked, it still has the original Videotron tweaked firmware.
My question is:
1. How do I flash my phone to the original Google firmware, so that I don't have to wait for an update?
2. What is the easiest method to root the phone for a Mac user?
3. I used to be an iPhone user and it was very easy for me to back-up the whole contents on the phone and restore them back. Is there an easy way, like a program similar to iTunes that can do this for my Nexus One (back-up the whole contents on the phone, for example my contact, SMS, music, and etc)?
4. Is there a way to install swype without rooting the phone?
Thank you for all you help
[Q] Change carrier specific (Videotron) firmware to original Google firmware.
1: It's easy, but will wipe your phone.
Download this: http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Pas...le_WWE_2.16.1700.1_FRG33_MFG_Shipment_ROM.zip
Extract it, and rename the extracted file to passimg.zip and place it on the root of your SD card. Power the phone off, hold Vol- and power it on again, it will detect the file and ask if you wish to install. Install it, reboot and wait for an OTA to the newest Google version (FRG83D currently).
2: To root, you can unlock the bootloader, or take your pick of apps to do it for you, it's all very straight forward regardless of you being a Mac user
3: Nandroid backup from custom recovery after rooting, it does the phone's entire state.
4. Yes, you don't need root at all.
It depends if you wanna unlock the bootloader, which will void the warranty!
If you don't care about warranty, do it that way it will be much easier.
If you wanna keep your warranty, follow my tutorial on my website: http://gravufo.kicks-ass.org/android.html
NOTE: When following the tutorial, do NOT download the ROM I am telling you to download, it seems to have issues updating to OTAs, so just take the ROM that Rusty linked!
NOTE2: I assume you speak french, considering you live in Quebec. Sorry if it's not the case
NOTE3: You can simply root with Universal Androot instead of SuperOneClick that I tell you to use in my tutorial (because it's only for Windows). The app can be found here: http://bit.ly/9wAKC5 (write this link in your phone and download/install the app, then root)
Good luck
I've seen that some of the Videotrons have the 0.35 hboot, so you may not be able to follow Rusty's approach...
Nice write up Gravufo!

I've not seen anyone fail to do the swap on Vodafone UK, and some or them have .35 as well, so fingers crossed.
Thanks for the compliment
And yeah we do have .35 cuz they're all SLCD (Vidéotron JUST launched their new network, so they only have the new Nexus and not the old ones)
Hopefully my tutorial will do the job, I should think of translating it to be able to give a very short answer to everyone in english I would already consider it "franglish" now since I'm using so many english terms (I can't stand hearing technology-specific french words, they're awful)
My French is pretty poor, and I could follow it! xD

Is the same process by Rusty! could be applied to a Korean Nexus One? Just bought it from KT 1 month ago. I think it is the SLCD version.
Edit: Looks like Rusty!'s approach doesn't work on a Korean N1. Is there any way similar to Rusty!'s without rooting 'cause I want to keep my phone vanilla for now?

Maybe they can use google translate... BTW, you should update your tutorial with the FRG83D build.
I've sent some info on another forum to gravufo... And, I attached the update.zip from FRG83 to FRG83D
Still gonna want to test it before making it happen... It would be easier if there was a complete rom going to FRG83D... but meh

Bought N1 on eBay - how to "unroot?"

Yes, I know. Why do I want to unroot? Well, the AT&T Nexus One is stuck on 2.1 update 1 and the baseband of the phone is unlocked.
How can I return to bone stock so that I receive all OTA updates. I'm good with what google pushes out and really don't want to fool with homebaked updates.
Thanks!
Read my signature, follow "unroot/restore" guide.
Your bootloader has been unlocked, not baseband. So follow the guide for unlocked bootloader. Use FRG83G ROM straight from HTC.
Thanks. Doing this now.
Actually, do I just follow the "fastboot" method and that's it?
Yes. Having unlocked bootloader makes things easier...

How so? I'm not really certain I am good with the method in the FAQ. I'm not familiar with adb and fastboot. In fact, I have no idea how to do these methods.
I am googling and reading as much as I can, but it's a bit intimidating. Any video walkthrough or idiot proof document that shows exactly what to type, etc?
Sorry, I'm just not as into this as most here (but I'm very eager to learn).

The phone I have already has an unlocked boot loader (there is an "unlocked" lock image below the nexus image upon reboot).
I believe returning to stock is as easy as downloading a factory N1 image, re-naming it to update.zip (or is it passimg.zip?) and running it from the boot loader...right?
I'm actually afraid to do this for fear of bricking this thing. All I want to do is go to a stock version of Android from the current 2.1-update1 Build EPE54B rom that came with this N1 so I can OTA up to the current 2.2.2 (or whatever) official google version is out. I'd like to go OTA from here on out, which the phone will not do now (stuck on 2.1 and saying "your software is up to date").
Is it as easy as what I suggested or am I a mega-noob?
Sorry for giving you the wrong info, I miss read the thread. I havent ever unrooted would hate to give you the wrong advice on the proccess. Sorry Im not more help
Since you are rooted and nervous about bricking your phone you can do this.
Flash a custom recovery if there is not one already on the phone via rom manager. Then in rom manager back up your rom (nandroid) . There is even a stock rom in rom manager that you can download and install all in rom manager. That will put the default recovery back as well. The phone will then the OTA's to the latest one.
Or you can just flash any other rom etc. It is really hard to actually brick the phone.

Thanks. Downloaded the Rom Manager, and guess what? The phone isn't rooted (I don't know anything about it .... just received it used from eBay).
The boot loader is definitely unlocked though and it's stuck on 2.1.
I will figure out the one-click root and go from there. Is that the best advice?

I would go that route if I was you. It is very quick and simple and noob friendly. You could also use the guides the other posters put up to learn some things as well.
Not sure why your phone is "stuck" at 2.1 in the first place. But yeah rooting/rom manager should do the trick quickly and easy.
Turns out I was able to install superuser, so it's rooted. Not sure why Rom manager complained about it not being rooted.
This is a pain in the ass so far. I will just try to flash to a ~light~ 2.3 ROM. Don't want a bunch of battery draining stuff. Recommendations?
Also, I still want to go to bone stock so I can get google OTAs. Oh well. Maybe I'll figure it out one day.

The 2.3 ROMs aren't really "ready" yet, and I don't know if I would really recommend them to a new user. Very buggy. If you can get ROM Manager to work (which should be as easy as installing it from the Market if you have root), then go to "Download ROM" and find your way to CyanogenMod 6.1.1. It will ask you if you want to install gapps as well, and you should select yes.
Once a phone has been unlocked and had custom roms installed on it, there's no way to ever go back to completely stock with OTA updates unfortunately. CyanogenMod is probably the cleanest and most supported rom you can find, but another would be Enomther's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614427).

Thanks. Well, I'm a total idiot. My passion.zip was passion.zip.zip. Nonetheless, the FAQ .zip original image file was "older than the currently installed version."
I'm done. I'm just going to play in the rooted 2.3 world. Currently downloading CyanogenMod's latest nightly for passion.
So, I am curious. Does this file I'm downloading update the radio and everything else? I'm certain the firmware versions for the radio, etc, are outdated.
Thanks.
EDIT: On second thought, is there a large reason not to go with a nightly? The latest stable version is two months old...I want clean and fast with minimal battery drain, etc.
You can always go back to stock and get the OTAs from Google. Only thing you can't do is relock the bootloader. ALWAYS can do it.

The only reason not to go with the nightly build is stability. CM7 isn't ready for general use yet, and there are a lot of problems still. Last time I used it the phone app was almost completely unusable and would lock up whenever someone called. It doesn't hurt to try it out though. You can always flash something else if it's not stable enough for you.

Nope, this isn't true. Once the signed boot loader is replaced, there's no more OTA's. You can get the notification that an update is available, but they wont install. Once the clockwork or ra_recovery are installed, OTAs will never work again. There is currently NO way to go back to 100% stock on a Nexus One.
Jesus. I'm going to jump off a bridge.
I successfully installed the STABLE CM6 update (radio update, google apps). My GD N1 keeps rebooting.
WHERE can I find a stable 2.2.2 or 2.2.1 stock ROM and end this madness. All I want to do is use this phone. It's currently possessed.

its not defective and at this point its just a matter of time until you fix it.
If you still want to be stock, ignore below and follow the links to restoring the stock rom above.
a) do you have a custom recovery installed? (i.e a nice navigable menu) if not flash one from a terminal/shell (on your desktop) in fastboot mode (power+trackball to start the phone, choose fastboot)
b)since you dont have much to lose, wipe everything after rebooting into recovery mode.
c)flash any ROM that works with your phone. (the LCD nexus ones need a different version I think)
When you install a stock rom it overwrites the custom recovery everytime it boots. It always does this. The unlocked boot loader is irrelevant the OTA's.
He or anybody else can flash a stock rom and get the ota.

WHERE can I find a stable 2.2.2 or 2.2.1 stock ROM and end this madness. All I want to do is use this phone. It's currently possessed.
(I'm beginning to think it's defective...)

Help Newbie with Nexus One

Hi All, I just got my Nexus one off ebay and it appears its not rooted as i do not see the padlock icon and i also cannot run the nexus torch.
What im looking to do is revert back to the stock software and than do all the OTA updates myself.
Can someone help me with this ? Im not looking to root though.
Im running the ATT version of the Nexus one.
Thanks all for your help.
To be root or not
if you do not see the padlock, then you are root!!
hi, yes i know and i do not see the pad lock so i have a unrooted phone. Im trying to find out how i can install the stock software this way i can do the OTA updates myself.
Thanks
If there's no padlock and you're sure it's not rooted... why do you think it's not already stock?
Well its running gingerbread and i wanted to go back to froyo and than OTA the updates myself
If its not rooted, root it! What version you on currently?

Im on the Nexus one ATT version, running the most recent gingerbread OS.
2.3.6???

If it is, try root using this... http://apachejava.blogspot.com/2011/06/root-nexus-one-gingerbread-234.html
My dad using my nexus one, so i dunno much... So, is your bootloader unlock, if it is, then go ahead with the link above... Then S-OFF using BlackRose...

Might help you.

If you don't see the padlock it means the bootloader is still locked. If you don't have the SuperUser app then you are more than likely NOT rooted. Sounds like a stock phone if you ask me. Why do you want to roll back to Froyo then update? Sounds like you are already where you want to be. It sounds like a case of reaching around your ass to scratch your elbow. Heh. If you try to OTA update it and it says you are up to date, I would suggest leaving it alone or just root it! Good luck!

Why? Is there a problem with what is currently installed? If it's working fine, then I would expect downgrading to a previous version and applying the updates would just get you back to where you are now. I'm not criticizing, just trying to understand what you're looking to achieve
If you mean stock as in "original" that isn't Froyo either. The Nexus One originally came with Eclair (2.1). If you don't have root, I'm not sure if you can downgrade or how safe it would be. I've seen mixed results with downgrading. The only way to do a complete flash would be with an unlocked bootloader or root + custom recovery.
If you don't want to root or unlock the bootloader, why not just do a full wipe and use the version you have on it? You could also root it temporarily to restore to an unrooted Eclair or Froyo, then apply the updates.
Thanks Narbir, I'm going to try this. Does it matter I have AT&T ?
I hope So. I m usng Voda uk. Don't really brother me by that.
Well the phone reboots often for no reason so i thought if i started from the factory installed software and go forward it would help.
How hard is it to root to install enclar and than go forward ? Unless someone has another idea for the reboot issue ?
Install the latest stock ROM in PASSIMG format (complete ROM, all the partitions). No need to go back to Eclair or Froyo.
Prepare for the possibility of it not helping at all, and your phone HW being faulty. If you have ADB set up - you can run "adb bugreport" after the crash, and look for "ARM9 has crashed" line in the log dump that comes. If you'll see them - no amount of ROM switching will help.
Not to sound pedantic, but you seem a little confused (OP). Why don't you start by reading the FAQs regarding rooting and unlocking the bootloader, and understanding the ROM installation processes.
Couple of fundamentals to get you started:
1. The padlock (or absence of) is no indication of whether you are rooted or not. It merely indicates whether your 'bootloader' is unlocked or not, which is a completely separate concept from rooting.
2. Easiest method of seeing whether you are rooted is to see if you have the 'SuperUser' app in your app drawer.
If your objective is to install a stock/default ROM, search for a 'PASSIMG' for the latest available firmware for your device. Search these forums or Google it. The procedure is fairly straightforward and only involves putting the file on your SD card - and will restore your phone to a stock usable state.
If you're interested in custom ROMs, the fastest way to get started is to use SuperOneClick to root (Google, please). Then go to the market and download ROM Manager and just follow the instructions!

Ideas for rerooting 6.2.1 update

Okay so the Kindles 6.2.1 update brought about gingerbread 2.3.6 from my understanding which patches the zergrush exploit. Here are some of my brainstorming ideas on ways that we can obtain root again.
1.) Some sort of flashing software to downgrade such as Odin/Heimdall (these work on samsung things so im not sure as to the viability of using these utilities on kindle.
2.) Perhaps there is a way we can use the OTA update method that amazon uses to issue a fake OTA update with a rooted image. This method to me sounds good but would probably require alot of work: like discovering how the amazon OTA updates are issued and ways that we can abuse and attack that process.
does anyone else have any ideas that might be considered?
As a first, is there anyone, who has successfully been able to use ADB/fastboot on firmware 6.2.1? I've tried the usual driver mods - no luck. Same thing on Ubuntu, which is weird - a Linux machine should have seen the KF without issues.
I can adb, just can't zerg. I looked for exploits for a half hour and came up blank.
You need to be root to idme. I'm at a roadblock :/

All non-rooted 6.2.1 are at a roadblock. Hopefully this is resolved soon.

I think you have a factory cable right? I can't try this as I am already at 6.2.1 rooted and I don't have a factory cable created or obtained yet.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't this just a general fix in android 2.3.6?

If you have a fastboot cable you can use that to modify the recovery. Then you have all the access you need to root, theme, whatever.

I know of one case where someone says they used a factory cable and was able to use one of the pre-rooted stock Roms to get it going. If that's the case, then we have our answer boys!!!

Thing is.. not everyone has a factory cable.. I plan to buy the parts to make one when I get a chance.. but I'm sure a method will come about.

now I dont know much about how to find exploits and stuff but I did download the stock update file and if you change it from .bin to .zip the structure looks like any other update zip just wil some extra stuff in it like the recovery image and such. could we just take the boot.img system directory and the other main system files from the rooted 6.2.1 and replace them in the stock update file and try to force it to re-update? once again just a thought after looking at the file.
It will fail the signature test in recovery if you tamper with the file. A factory cable is a useless method for rooting because nobody has one. We are looking for a method that doesn't require a cable

but couldnt you resign the file? I remember on my hero I used to take the dev roms remove all the crap I didnt want and then zip it and resign it. or does that only work with a custom recovery?

That only works with a custom recovery. Now if you can get your hands on the signature file that amazon signs their updates with then that's a different story.

lol, dont we all wish we could get our hands on that. like I said when it comes to the dev side i dont know much (though I want to learn, just dont know where to start) I kinda figured it couldnt be that easy but but it never hurts to ask.

the implications of ROOT

hello!
i just got my N4 a few days ago...
didnt even change a ringtone yet... just downloaded some apps, and costumized the phone a-bit.
i do want to root, because some advanced actions such as recording calls (legal in my country) require root.
i was about to root using the Nexus 4 ToolKit posted here:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1995688
but when i run it it always says its tookit ver v1.3.0, and a 1.6.0 is avilable, i update but when i re-run it, it says its 1.3 again...
and even if i go past this step and get to the "What build do you have?
the only answer i can pic is 4.2 (JOP24C)
and i own JOP24D (2.4.1) - will this be an issue?
and also - if i root my phone, and lets say androud 4.2.2 comes out a day later, does the phone still update? or do i stop getting updates as soon as im rooted?
TY!

If you get the donate version it will update it so that you can do the 4.2.1 build. I think it was like $5. Well worth supporting the dev

alright cool i don't mind paying 5USD...
but what about the most important things?
does rooting 100% erase evetyhing?
Do i keep getting updates to my phone? or when a new version comes out i have to re-root or something?
It will erase EVERYTHING and you would have to go back to stock to get the OTA or wait for a build to be flashable
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
If the ROM got OTA (over the air) you can update i guess, not really populair with OTA, but you can download 4.2.2 stock ROM or custom ROM when it comes out.

might? i bet ill learn ALOT!
i just have one more question - that i didnt understand.
as of now, unrooted, if 4.3(lets say) comes out tommorow, my device updates, bam.. im 4.3
if i root now, at 4.2.1, the above will not happen? meaning in order to update to 4.3 i will have to lose all my data again?

If you are only rooted and having modified any system files you can OTA successfully.

ashamed to say i didnt really get it.. lol.
you said OTA is "Over the Air", right?
so if i rooted at 4.2.1 (just rooted, no rom or anything), and 4.3 came out do i
1. Have to delete everything AGAIN and re-root on 4.3 to get the update
2. have to find the 4.3 file online and install it somehow
3. do nothing, the phone automatically gets updated
ty =)

Getting root on your device does not delete anything. What deletes everything is unlocking the bootloader (which, at the present time, is required to obtain root). You only have to unlock the bootloader once. Once it is unlocked, getting root is trivial.
Every time you receive an over-the-air update, it will remove your root access, BUT, as I mentioned earlier, getting it back is trivial when your bootloader is unlocked.

Have you read the stickies in the General and Q&A sections? There is a couple of stickies by me in the General section (the "Basics" and "Root" links in my signature), and there is also a sticky by Jubakuba in the Q&A section.

I did not!
I will do so as soon as I'm done with work.
Will prolly open a thread titled "rooted 4.2, how do i update to 4.2.1" unless its in the stickies..

The easiest way is to wait for the OTA notification to appear on your device. Then just accept it, and then root again.
I've written up something for the Galaxy Nexus (sticky in the GNex General section), but nothing yet for the N4. The basic premise (and most of the commands) are the same. You can browse through it for some background info.
