who thinks the G2 can last forever? - G2 and Desire Z General

just curious about who thinks the G2 can go the distance.

I wouldn't say it would last forever but the G2/Desire Z will be here for a while.

It's so hard to take you seriously with a name like that.lmao

Will last as long as t-mobile has 4g
As soon as AT&T (or like 6-12month later) buys t-mobile, the life of G2 will be limitted. I know that 2g speed just won't do it for me.
I guess I wish that frequencies that the phone used were not in the hardware but in the software.

They probably will considering that at&t doesn't have anything in place for hspa+ and all at&t is doing is focusing on rolling out lte.
On the other hand, the second a dual core phone with a physical keyboard comes out, the g2 loses its place in my heart Preferably htc but the way they keep trying to lock down their bootloader is a complete turn-off and may be a deciding factor for me in the future if they keep it up lol

Dont get me wrong i love my G2 but im thinking about trading it for another phone... i just dont use the keyboard enough.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

I am actually about to buy a G2 in the next week or so. I really love the keyboard (after the iPhone, I realized I really need a keyboard). I currently have a Cliq, so it will be a big step up for me.
I am slightly worried about losing T-Mo 3/4G once the Evil Empire buys them up. I have an awesome plan ($70/month (includes taxes/fees) for 400 min, unlimited text/data ) that they no longer give to new customers. Their new plans are ****e imho. I don't know how much longer after they buy T-Mo they will let me keep my plan. I already left AT&T once cause of their ridiculously high prices.
Anyway, I don't need the G2 to last forever, just for another year until I decide to get a new phone (the one with dual cores, 3D, and ion laser cannons). The last phone I had for more than a year was the original iPhone (3 yrs). My last two phones I only had for less than 6 months each (N900 and Cliq).

Sure the G2 can last forever....
If you give it Viagara, lol

u have any links to back up that they will start dropping the 3/4g? Why would ATT just stop using mhz bands when the towers are up and stable...? I seriously think att will start using the 4g towers...

tbh i dont think t-mobile will die. yes they will be taken over but i think they may let t-mobile to keep its name just to stop the confusion. maybe an * next to the name or maybe "T-Mobile, an AT&T company."

My girl just got D2Global and my G2 pummeled it...

My girl got a Droid 2 Global (at my suggestion) because she wanted a keyboard smartphone. Its her first smartphone... didnt wanna wait for the Merge, plus she liked the White finish on the Global...
I thought the benchmarks would be similar since im perm root overclocked at 1.2ghz and hers is stock 1.2ghz... instead my Quadrant is at 2100 and hers is around 1300! I know Quadrants not everything but her phone is noticably less snappy. Granted, Im on vanilla froyo and shes on MotoTurd, but damn. Also Verizon 3G is so slow compared to HSPA+...
For her its great tho. She is impressed that she can change the wallpaper.
Just wanted to share.

No, if you read my post you would see I was comparing their processors. As an aside, in the last sentence, I mentioned 3g vs '4g', yes. And my point was that my moderate HSPA+ speeds (which are low when compared to other cities), was more than three times as fast as her 3g, even though we're in a really heavily covered Verizon 3g area.
Please don't fall for the hype; hspa+ is not a 4g tech.

I agree once u use G2 oc there is very little that it will impress u it terms of speed. I checked out Galaxy tab and 900 quad score, i will not pay half for what its priced. I am sure that might change in future but as of now G2 smokes em all.

Don't get caught up in semantics. Notice I put 4g in quotes anyway...
To the consumer, anything faster than 3g should be 4g... the labels are arbitrary but the distinction is what's important. So sick of people saying this...
The industry agrees... 3.5g and hspa+ are just annoying and equally arbitrary. At least calling everything faster than 3g, "4g" makes sense... and when they top that, call it "5G"
People like you are the reason Street Fighter 2 got all screwed up.
I didn't mean to offend anybody, lol. Im just getting so tired of arguing with my friend about 4g tech. I hate when people are disillusioned by ads. Sprint has this dude thinking the Evo is still in the top 3 smartphones O_O wtf.
Ill say that out of all the carriers, ATT and Verizon will have the closest to 4g tech with LTE because its a completely new infrastructure, unlike HSPA+ (which I love) and the old ass WIMAX tech Sprint proclaims is 4g..if WIMAX is 4g then Nokia had 4g 3+ years ago..
SO i guess that makes Tmob and Sprint the fakers
Also my post was to the person you quoted. Your argument of VZWs 3g vs Tmobs 3g stands because hspa+is still a 3g tech and just walks all over poor RevA

Big Thanks for all the Dev's hard work. But no more Hero for Me :(

I just wanted to say Thank You Very much to all the Devs that made my hero as good as it could be but I've now moved on to the Optimus S which Kicks ass. I sure wish we had CM6 for that phone along with Deca's Kernels
I loved my CM6 Hero but once I used an OC'd Optimus S, I just couldnt not get one. $49 phone that scores 9.5 on Linpack, 1352 on Quadrant and 54.3 FPS on Neocore @ 806 mhz I mean this phone rocks! This thing kills Angry Birds lol. I have around 275mb of free ram and even clocked at 245/480 on Conservative its much faster than my Hero (no lag) with 2 days of usage.
I have better reception and Incredible battery life. I'm talking 2+ days on moderate usage. Probably around 3 days if you didnt use it much at all. This thing is incredible for the price.
Anyways Thanks again for all the hard work from Deca to Darch to Impaler we have a great team over here at XDA and I enjoyed every minute of it!
Just bought one for 185 new on ebay. but its for my boy and xmas. Now i gotta figure out how to talk him out of it and give him the hero come the 25th.

BestBuy has the Optimus S free this month on contract. I do believe that I will wait for the Desire Z (Evo Shift). That and why on earth would anyone come in here praising the iphone? My old and slow Hero is way better than any iphone I have used or seen, but that is my opinion and I will keep that where it belongs.
Well I am going to rant a bit. My stepsister (4g), her father (3gs), my mother (3gs) and my wife (3g) all have iphones. I will not use any apple product but, to say the least, know a bit about them. When any of them have an issue with their computer, iphone, or vcr, I am the one that has to fix it. It just pisses me off when a damn iphone user forces their opinion on everyone else. I understand you like your phone, but I truly believe that you are probably an idiot and/or a Jehovah's Witness/Mormon (not meant to offend but those religions seem to be the most pushy).

Great to be a G2, N1 and somewhat Nexus S owner... sorry mt4g and vibrant owners lol

First before commenting angry non vanilla users check out the second paragraph in the article. Lol I guess it really does suck right now to be the owner of anything not vanilla android since you really wont get to experience the real changes to the android infrastructure in 2.3. On top of that most people aren't really that impressed with the nexus s and the omission of certain key features ( no hspa+ or micro sd slot... wtf?). In my opinion, this make the G2 the clear upgrade for anyone looking to take advantage of the refined features on 2.3. Just reinforces my appreciation for the design quality and overall performance of my awesome G2! Such a sick phone
http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2010/12/android-2-3-gingerbread-review-better-than-fruitcake/
The G2 isn't really vanilla, but I have a feeling if T-Mobile sees the feedback they might just give us 2.3 completely vanilla.
That'd be SO cool.
Sorry dude. That would be awesome, but is never gonna happen...

No the debate was that all the apps that came preinstalled made it seems like it was a skin, but it wasn't. They are all google made apps. There aren't any htc made widgets, skins or apps. So this is vanilla lol. Just because there are more refined and finished google apps available with the release of the G2 than there were with the G1 and N1, does not mean the g2 is any less vanilla the the N1 or G1.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
Actually, no, the G2 isnt completely vanilla. It has nothing to do with the installed apps or the skin. A few weeks back Cyanogen himself said that the G2 incorporated a lot of random HTC frameworks (as in stuff that you cant see, but its there) and the G2 is not at all "stock" android.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Alright guys, Cyanogen himself said that the stock image isn't COMPLETELY stock, it does have HTC bits in there. But then again, the UI and everything else is stock. If you browse around your phone's filesystem, you will find some sort of HTC files.
Ah I see I did not know this. I was talking about the debate over the amount of installed apps on the phone along with the skin. Appreciate your info!

Yeah, I've always known that Samsung (and other brands, like LG) haven't historically had as strong a user community as the HTC devices (although that seems to be changing). But I don't think the fact that the G2 has an unskinned "vanilla" version of Android is going to make much of a difference in terms of custom ROM support (just "official" updates). I expect there to be custom Gingerbread ROMs for the Desire Z, as well as other HTC devices in no time at all.

Hahaha the EVO section... I really honestly miss seeing arguements all the time. Hahaha, never understood these posts though.
This happens when I flash miui, but of you're on the stock rom I would take it back to sprint

yea i did, like a month ago and been a fan of your work since my first day in the ns4g section and we were both perusing the 01120 prl thing for a while.
but now back to your first question. i dont understand the point/purpose/need for a thread about sending your phone in for repairs/replacement, so i did the typical innernet thing and posted an obnoxious picture that best explained what i just explained lol. now go get your shinebox.
btw how is that aosp rom coming, i missed out on it before but im eager to try it when its ready

and hopefully gonna get it fixed. All morning i have been having serious calling problems. 3 times the calls got ended for no reason at all and the mic doesn't work half the time. i tried calling sprint and the first 5 times they couldn't hear me lol guy thought i was prank calling him
Anyone else had these problems before and is it familiar with other Nexus owners?
thanks

yes that's why i returned mine, canceled sprint, went to verizon and got good service and a kick ass phone now. for the ns4g users that are waiting for this "fix" to come, i hope it comes soon for you guys.
when i get employed again and can get off my familys account on sprint i was thinking about Verizon or ATT. those are the only 2 companys i haven't tried.
i had VZ years ago but that was before there were such thing as smartphones.
i kind of have a thing for the Droid charge, really wanna get a feel for that phone

verizon service is 10x better than sprint. i even get 4g at my home now. yes im paying more but soo far it's worth it. i agree the charge looks like a nice phone but i got the tbolt, htc has a better rep with their phones.
I came from Verizon to sprint, my work has a sprint tower on property so yep. Best hurry and sign the contract before tiered goes in or has it already?

Already has... happened on the 7th. VZW can go shove tiers up there ass

How much is the difference in pay? i'd be lying if i said i didn't care how much lol
I had a HTC phone and enjoyed sense but i'm more of AOSP guy. HTC is still quite difficult to unlock but it is possible. it took me 10 minutes to root my nexus after installing the drivers.
AOSP is the way to go man. Speed and reliability over Bulky sense anyday

Speculation: T-Mobile to launch QWERTY equipped G3 in early Q3

http://androidandme.com/2012/07/sma...ile-to-launch-qwerty-equipped-g3-in-early-q3/
If only, if only...
If they do, it won't be from HTC, as HTC a while back said they were done with qwerty phones.
I think they said they're 'moving away' but not necessarily 100% done

Aye, indeed. Ur right, there is still hope from HTC. But i'd be more than happy if we got an GalaxyS3 with a hw kb. I doubt we'l get a removable battery/sd from HTC again.

Moving away does not equal "We will never make one again". Besides, releasing one keyboard model for a single carrier is not exactly a crazy notion.

Especially if you consider how many G2 users might actually renew their 2-year contract for a free upgrade to a G3. (most of my family has already done this with their own phones, and I'm eligible to upgrade as well from my G2... if there was a comparable phone for it...)
IF this happens I hope they follow suit and also release it in Canada / Worldwide under the same bands as the DZ. That's the reason the G2/DZ has such a strong community, because it's worldwide.

One would hope, it would also be more profitable for HTC to be able to sell the same phone on a worldwide market with simply different branding like they did with the G2/DZ. It's just a matter of, is there a demand for it outside of say T-Mobile users. (I would say there is, but HTC would have a better idea of the numbers).
The name Era 42 makes sense for a keyboard phone as 42 would be the perfect number of keys for a 4 row qwerty phone. The G2 has 43 including though shortcut keys and search key I never use.
Omg i hope this is true. Im getting an S3 the beginning of next month so i better hear some more news SOON.

Same situation here!
It sounds nice but I don't think HTC will make another phone with KB. Hopefully I'm wrong because I'm an HTC fan. I see the BLAZE Q is coming out pretty soon and spec. aren't that bad.
