I bought a USB female to female adapter to plug on the end of the charging cord, some things work, some things don't.
List of devices that work:
HTC Hero - Mass Storage mode (works 2 out of 5 tries aprox.)
Logitech G9 - Works, although only default buttons (left, right, scroll, middle) seem to work
SanDisk Cruzer 4GB USB Stick - Works
Generic Logitech wired keyboard - Works, although not all keys do.
List of devices that DON'T work:
Logitech Wireless Keyboard K250
USB external DAC
Generic Logitech USB mouse
I hope it can read usb flash drive too !!! already bought my female-to-female adapter too
I just tried hooking up my HTC hero with mass storage enabled and it seems to be hit and miss? It recognizes it 2 out of 5 times or so.
How about finding and wiring USB from the 40 pin connector
It is a given the 40 pin connector has USB. Does anyone have pinout / mating connector info?

Don't have any on hand at the moment, I will possibly have access to an ext HDD tomorrow though and will check it then if I can.
That's great news. I did like having USB host on my GTab.

NTFS SHOULD be supported, but yes mine are all FAT32/FATex/ext4
i will have to try again, i built a gender changer, tried it with one mouse, and it did not work so i assumed it would not work for anything, i'll have to try some thumb drives or something.

it seems really picky, it recognized my G9 mouse but not a generic logitech one.
Just speculating, but I would guess that it isn't up to spec. So devices that have looser requirements will work (say it can take 4V instead of requiring 5V), but devices with stricter requirements fail.
did you try a all-in-one type card reader?
or connect digital camera to it?

No, Usb mouse is supported by HC. You can use one with the dock. This is more likely a power thing. The port's main use is power in and data, not power out. It may have strange limits.

don't have any of those, sorry.
Picked up a USB female to female plug today, and proceeded to plug in various drives, mice, Phoness etc, but no sign of anything happening at all. Is there something else I'm missing here? Cheers.
Can anyone with an SD/card reader see if it's recognized?
I'm going on vacation soon and would love to back up my photos to the TF.
Thought about this 2 days ago and bought one yesterday. Tried to plug in my Inspire 4G, external USB HDD and USB jumpdrive. None of them worked.

I tried a multi card reader and it didn't work. I didn't try a card reader that reads only SD (don't have one) but I doubt that it's gonna work given everything else I tried didn't (usb mouse, usb flash drives, Nikon DSLR)

Ok, in theory Galaxy S 2 supports USB On-The-Go which means, it can be a USB host device for things like pendrives, digital cameras etc.
Granted of course, that you have the necessary cable.
Has anyone tried this feature?
Also, does the connected device have to be formatted as fat32?

I agree with the reviewer, big black mark on Samsung for not including the required cables with the phone for USB and HDMI.

Update on USB Mouse - some are working. Check my thread in the accessories forum for more details.
Hi there,
Got my £2 cable from Hong Kong (ebay purchase today).
Works great - even runs my 500GB HDD (this has to be plugged in to operate anyway - not sure USB powered HDDs will work).
If anyone's interested, the item description was:
Micro USB Host Cable for Nokia N810 OTG on the go N 810
No mention of the SGS2 - but I can verify that these work just fine!!!
Jamie
Any Nokia compatible OTG cable seem to work. I've successfully tested several different cables (all from eBay) with usb sticks, optical mouse and usb based memory card reader. However, usb based wifi sticks, fast ethernet dongle and tv-card didn't work. We probably need some new drivers and possibly more power (an usb hub could fix this).
I bought the Nokia USB OTG adapter too. With FAT32 Sticks ists working. But without NTFS support it is nearly useless for me.
umm...i have a nokia n8 and i took off the OTG cable that came with it before selling it in favor of buying a new Galaxy S 2.
However, the nokia OTG cable is perfectly rectangular, whereas the Galaxy S 2 cable connector is a bit "broken off" two edges, hence, using them is impossible together...but i managed to get them to work (in the shop where i tried the Galaxy S 2 at least, i didn't buy the phone yet).
I used a rasp, and filed off the edges of the Nokia OTG cable carefully to match the "broken edges" as the Galaxy S2's connector shape...took that cable to the shop where there is a working Galaxy S 2 unit, and connected it with a flash disk on the other side aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand......it worked !
If you have the caution and a rasp, i think Nokia's OTG cable should work too..they're cheap off ebay too, aren't they ?
Just ordered one of those off ebay (The Nokia N8 compatible one). Would receive it by tomorrow. I hope it works!
Here is mine ****ty review of USB mouse, USB keyboard and USB lamp.

here's mine, got it also from ebay.
If you can't get it to recognize USB mass storage I would suggest using USB Mass Storage Watcher: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.skidmrk.umswatcherotg. It will let you mount any type of external storage (NTFS, FAT 32/16, EXT, etc... It's free.
Also, this is a good USB host cable: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GGBYJ4?ie=UTF8&seller=A76FR6O1NBAXV&sn=T & S Electronics, LLC
I seem to get a "Clear USB" error when I plug in certain usb drives. I'm not sure if this is related to the drive being NTFS or if it is above a certain size. I can't for the life of me find any specs on the whole feature, including its maximum output power.
Could anyone shed some light on the subject from their trial and errors?
Thanks,

I am using mine for reading memory cards and USB drives, works great!
Also plug my Sony camera into it and it instantly uploads my pics.
I use mine to avoid Kies and the inability to just access my 16gig as a USB drive. I drag what I need to my internal storage and be done with it. Nice.
I use it to drag files to the Tab when I'm not using File Share FTP sharing.
Using it with this so I don't have to get a SD/micro-SD adapter.

Do you have to set up something in the settings? On my Asus Transformer the keypad dock read even 750 GB external hard drive via USB. Is my connector faulty?

I don't get it... How does this relate to the Tab? Doesn't the Sammy dongle thingy just accept USB? I have one of those small USB readers that accepts full SD cards, but with an SD card adapter which you slip your Micro SD card into, it works just fine. Not sure what this device you mention here does for you.
EDIT: OK, I get it. The reader in your link takes just the microSD card and not a regular SD card where you would need an adapter. Personally, I have this little oval USB SD reader that has caps on both ends. Very small. I just leave an SD to microSD adapter in it, and just plug it in and slide in my microSD. No little cable. I could also just leave an adapter in my laptop, as it has a built in SD card slot... But, yeah, for the Sammy side of things, my little reader should be just fine.
I just received my USB adapter (ordered from Amazon for ~$17) and use it exclusively to plug in a microSD USB adapter.

Has anyone tried a usb female to female adapter/gender changer. This way we could just use the usb cable thats included and the $3-4 adapter rather than using the $20 adapter?

Data Connector Pinout
You have to have the 20k ohm between pins 13 and 15. This tells the Tab to go into OTG host mode.
EDIT:
Oh and I am using my adapter for this: DSLR Controller
I've been using mine to access my Western Digital "My Passport Elite" 320GB hard drive via a powered USB hub. I also use it to access a couple of thumb drives.
I use it to play SNES and Playstation games via emulators, using my xbox 360 controller.
I've read a lot that you have to order the USB adapter. Mine was included?
But the original Samsung seals was broken 2 times and the third was not. So I guess they included it afterwards?

No, it won't work. It requires specific resistors to be present on dock connector pins not brough out to the USB side of the data/charging cable.
The GNote has the ability to act as a USB host, which allows one to attach a flash drive directly to the Note as external storage.
Can we expect devs on the forum to develop USB drivers so we might use other peripherals such as keyboards and mice on the GNote?
I come from a Notion Ink Adam tablet which runs Froyo and was able to work with plug and play USB keyboards and mice.
Would be a very nice feature to hafe on the GNote.

so you guys are saying that one can use a usb mouse on the note. i guess first you need an adapator or an usb mouse with a micro plug, then just plug and go.
I tested out my razer orochi BT mouse and it worked fine. Don't have any use for it yet until I get a small BT keyboard I can use.
Hi Pere,
To be honest. I read a review which stated that in practice with the OTG USB adapter only flashdrives and externally powered hard drives seemed to work and that the drivers for keyboards and mice would be needed for them to work.
This did not stop me from ordering the adapter, which still has to be delivered. Will obviously test myself once it arrives.
Would be delighted if one can plug in any USB keyboard.
Thanks for clearing it up.

Nice!! Thank you.
Two more questions, one of them for people using not standard English keyboard ( French, Spanish and so on...) does the keys layout meet with the written characters? I mean: symbols as ;/"? are in different keys? or does they match with the written ones?
The second question or test: Can we use a Host USB to connect together both keyboard and mouse simultaneously to the note!?
Who will be the first in test?
Thanks in advance
Good question! I would like if one could answer that as well.
I guess it would require a OTG usb cable + USB hub. Does the Note support for a USB hube? I mean, would the USB host in the Note allow that?
Also, if it works with an USB hub, then I guess you would be able to both output screen to hdmi, charge and use USB keyboard/mouse at the same time?
An Italian coleague has already answered the USB hub question with this video: And yes, we can!
Regarding the simultaneous connection of mouse, keyboard and HDMI would be great but I'm afraid that there are technical reasons to doubt that it's possible...
What about the special signs question? Any idea?

Is it just a cable with a male micro usb plug at one end, and female std. USB plug at the other end ?
Or it needs some magic electronic add-on inside ?

Hi people,
I read in a review that you can connect an external hard drive to the nexus 7 (the usb powered ones) via a USB Host Cable.
Could any of you tell me if this is correct or not? As i have an Archos 80 g9 and i know it cant do it off the micro usb only the USB 2.0 slot it has.
Thanks a lot for the help

Yes, it is possible but you may need to provide external power to the drive. Use a powered usb hub or something like that. The Nexus 7 most likely won't be able to output enough current to power a spinning drive.
Ah ok, so you are saying that you plug the usb host connection from the nexus to the usb hub and plug the hard drive in to another port on the hub?
I just want to know if this works as 16GB isnt much space when you want to take it on a trap to watch films.
cheers
you need to be rooted. my understanding is flash drives or micro sdcards are good to go, not sure an external hd will work unless powered as previous poster alluded

Hi. I decided to use a wireless drive to store all of my music, movies and documents. So, I purchased the Seagate GoFlex Satellite Mobile Wireless Storage. You can use with Android or IOS devices. I love it.
Yes, its a no-go out-of-the box connecting to a USB thumb drive or a powered HD with a microUSB OTG cable. This doesn't really surprise me, though, because they would need to dynamically detect the device type and mount it on the system. What I haven't tried is a USB keyboard. Anybody do that?

great thanks for the info. btw is the new one using usb 3.0 or 2.0? do u know if usb 3.0 will work?
I just plugged in a full-sized USB keyboard using my OTG cable and it works fine. I can touch type, use the cursor keys including ctrl+arrows to skip words, bring up menus with the context menu key just to the left of the right-hand ctrl key, etc, etc. I'm sure it must be using up my battery at a faster rate, though.
Edit: It's just occurred to me that there's a problem with using a USB keyboard to type when the N7 is in portrait mode: finding a stand to hold the tablet upright at the right angle when the USB-OTG cable is sticking out of the USB port at the bottom of the tablet.
Mind you, it's great being able to type at full speed without a soft keyboard hiding a large chunk of the screen.

You can get OTG cables with a right angled micro-USB plug on them, which might help your stand problem. I have one on its way as I was concerned about knocking/bending/snapping the straight plug when its sat on my lap in portrait mode.

Or, just turn the tablet upside down so the cable is pointing up. The display will rotate appropriately.
I think but not sure that you'll want cm10 for the rotate from any angle thing...

how did you manage it ??did you use nexus media importer
Without a custom kernel, the external hdd won't work with Stickmount or NMI if it is formatted NTFS. I haven't actually used NMI, but others have posted about the NTFS issue.
I've no idea if this will be of interest to any of you, especially those people who have yet to buy a 5t and are trying weigh up the pros and cons, but USB OTG is something I use all the time, so o it was one of the first things I tested when I got mine. So far I'm really pleased as everything I wanted to work does so. My last device, a Xiaomi Redmi Note 2, had very poor USB OTG implementation so this is great from my point of view. Maybe I'm behind the times and I had the last phone on the planet with that problem - if so, please delete this mods
First off, before you can use USB OTG, you need to head into settings, then advanced and check the OTG setting. It turns off after ten minutes so I created a link on my homepage using Nova launcher's activity widget menu.
*EDIT* As ny-hardcore has kindly pointed out below, you can also have an OTG quick toggle in notification area. This didn't work for me at first (or I was hitting the wrong thing), but now it does .
Tested and working:
USB card readers of various types, including micro USB readers, with the help of a USB C to Micro USB adapter (5 for £4 on eBay!). The only one that didn't work is a proprietary Samsung multi card reader that also has a full sized USB output and HDMI out too. This isn't very surprising of course, but they're to be avoided if you see one on eBay and assume it's a generic adapter.
80 GB iPod hard drive in a cheap enclosure bought via Amazon.
1 TB 2.5" Western Digital HDD - that's right, no USB hub required, just plug it straight in. The only other portable device I've owned could power it was a Samsung tablet.
2 mega pixel boroscope (using USB Camera app in Play Store) . So useful for finding slow water leaks under the floor or peering down a spark plug hole into a cylinder!!
Micro USB DVB TV dongle, via adapter.
Keyboards and mice via an OTG adapter, including a combination media keyboard with built in trackball mouse (this usually doesn't work on my phones for some reason). The UK keyboard layout is supported via settings so you can have a £ key - woohoo!
Other phones! I plugged my old phone in and discovered I could mount it in MTP mode and then browse its contents from the built in file explorer. For what it's worth, the Oneplus even charges the device that's connected to it.
When you need to eject the device there's a button that appears in the notification area. Sometimes this gets obscured, so swipe down a second time and the 'eject' will appear.
I haven't tried any game controllers yet, but so far the support has been so comprehensive I don't see why there would be a problem.
In the attached photo, the only thing that doesn't work is the black coloured multi purpose card reader on the far right.
In quick toggles you can add an otg switch.
You don't have to go in settings that way to enable otg.

Thanks, for some reason that just didn't work for me unless I went into settings/advanced as well. I can't recall which firmware I was on at the time and I haven't tried since The quick toggles are so far away for my little hands too (please Oneplus add a Xiaomi one handed mode - in fact, make it EXACTLY like Xiaomi devices).
LOL, typical, now it does work for me! I was probably pressing flight mode by mistake or something.
Just FYI, I've tried the following USB DACs with an OTG cable on my 5T and they appear to work:
- Fiio E17
- Meridian Explorer (v1)
- Audioquest Dragonfly (v1)

Has anyone gotten USB sound cards to work *for recording*.
Like I have a Terratec Aureon USB MkII and would like to livestream my DJ sets to Facebook via the FB app, by hooking up the line-out on my decks to the line-in on a soundcard hooked up to my phone and have the streamed video use the soundcard instead of the internal mic which sounds rubbish.
Edit: Tried it, and yes it works, but you have to hook up to the mic port, not the line in, and this doesn't seem like a great idea. Any idea how to change it?
Edit2: Scratch that, phone rebooted itself during a longer test

Like I have a Terratec Aureon USB MkII and would like to livestream my DJ sets to Facebook via the FB app, by hooking up the line-out on my decks to the line-in on a soundcard hooked up to my phone and have the streamed video use the soundcard instead of the internal mic which sounds rubbish.
Edit: Tried it, and yes it works, but you have to hook up to the mic port, not the line in, and this doesn't seem like a great idea. Any idea how to change it?
Edit2: Scratch that, phone rebooted itself during a longer test

That would be so cool if you can get it working. Wonder if it's the phone or the Terratec? I have NO experience in that area. Good luck! How much power does it draw? Would a powered USB hub in the mix help?
Hadn't thoughtof the power draw issue.
What I really need is a super cheap low power USB line-in of some sort. Though after further testing, FB live streaming is crap, with low quality audio and video in all the configurations I tried (Android app, Win10+Firefox, Win10 app) so I'm probably going to abandon this plan and try a different platform like Youtube or something.
Just cant get otg to work in my device, I am on OOS 4.7.5, rooted with SuperSu, tried a type c to micro USB adapter, also a type c to USB 3.0 adapter, I have enabled the otg option in advanced settings before plugging in the devices, I don't know whether its the phone or the adapter I use, what kind of adapter did you buy, is it a type c 3.1 to micro USB 2.0/ USB 3.0, could you provide me with a name of the adapter.

I have the following USB OTG adapters.
2 X micro USB to full sized USB (the long type with a two inch cable).
1 X mini micro USB adapter that is tiny.
1 X micro USB adapter (bigger than above)
1 X USB C OTG adapter with micro SD card reader built in.
All of the above work. In the case of the micro USB OTG adapters, I'm using a USB C to Micro USB adapter (they're tiny, about 2 CM long).
In short, every USB OTG adapter I've put in it works. All are unbranded, generic adapters that I've bought from Amazon or eBay. I've never had to do anything more than enable OTG in settings.
Could it be something to do with the ROM you're using?
In the attached photo, the ones with a yellow Mark are micro USB OTG adapters. The one with a red mark is a USB C multi card reader (built in USB OTG). The one with a blue mark is a USB C to Micro USB adapter.

Sadly what you're doing is way beyond anything I've tried. I'm happy when I can get card readers and stuff to work
I vaguely recall reading about specifications for the older micro USB ports on phones and what type of power output they supported - not all were equal. For example, there were a bunch of Samsung phones and tablets that could power hard drives without needing a powered USB hub inline. Similarly, some could power an MHL connection to a TV without the adapter being plugged into a charger like most phones that supported MHL had to. I've forgotten the name for these specs, but presumably USB C is exactly the same and it'll be online somewhere. No idea what your Terratec draws or if that could be the problem - if our phones can spin a 1 TB hard drive then perhaps it's not an issue, I was just clutching at straws.
Good luck!

4.7.4 Stock. Stock recovery too (not rooted either).
USB OTG worked on stock 4.7.2 as well.
Working fine for me, stock, custom roms etc. Use a cableconnection usb/otg cable 6" in length. Just enable OTG in the swipe down, plus USB stick in...no problems.
I gave up on using the phone for this because the audio quality via the FB app is terrible anyway, so I nicked my GF's Windows laptop and started using OBS for streaming instead.
Power aside, it's awesome that an external sound card will work (kinda) for recording though!.

Thanks for the reply, I am beginning to think that it kind of an issue with OOS 4.7.5, I have to flash the old version and try my luck on it.
