Colors on Android 2.3.4 - Nexus S General

After updating to 2.3.4, I notice that (to my eyes anyway) the colors seem to have been adjusted again. As we all know, Google messed with the color temperature in 2.3.3 to the chagrin of many. Complaints of yellow screens abounded. Mine had a slightly yellow tint to it as well, however it seems gone with 2.3.4.
I have always felt the best, most accurate colors available on the Nexus S were achieved with Voodoo. It appears that 2.3.4 matches it.
Are my eyes deceiving me, or are the colors really better? Anyone agree?

removed i was wrong

Something definitely seems different. Maybe a little brighter.

removed i was wrong

i couldn't tell any difference from 2.3.3. they look more natural, perhaps with a very (and i do mean very) slight blue tint. the whites are in-your-face as before, but i found it really difficult to read the browser before, now, it's not so bad.

The colours have changed, are better and look more vibrant. I'm happy again.

I have 2.3.4 and my yellowish tint is still here. Not a major concern to me but just figured I would share.

Yellow tint is still there. No difference in colour temperature.

Colors did not change.
However, I think the colors on 2.3.3 were fantastic, so.... you might not value my opinion much anyway

Display issues still not solved
I wonder when they will fix this issue.
I want the yellow tint to be removed. From what I read voodoo kernel fixes the issue. So I have 3 questions. Can somebody answer them?
1. Is it possible to root without wiping data?
2. Can I flash voodoo kernel on 2.3.4?
3. To test voodoo kernel do I need to root the phone?

I agree with this too. They're more natural this way. Yea, even though they've lost their saturation, but that's the whole point.

Until someone shows me a side by side comparison I am standing by my statement "the screen colour definitely changed" other than that, I don't know because I cannot really tell that well, I cannot say for the better or for the worst, please does anyone have two Nexus S devices to compare?

It's not true. You do not need to compare devices side by side. You only need to look at the source code which DID change between 2.3.2 and 2.3.3 but DID NOT CHANGE between 2.3.3 and 2.3.4.

People the colors are the EXACT SAME from 2.3.3, I don't know what some of you guys have been smoking LOL

If you guys really want to see AMAZING colors then do the following.
Flash Netarchys kernel (made for 2.3.4):
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/20870695/Netarchy Nexus/netarchy-nexus-1.3.0.8a-cfs-2.3.4-signed.zip
Then download Voodoo Control from the Market.
In Voodoo Control enter these settings (taken from Voodoo Colors thread) and then restart your phone

blue: -49
RGB Multipliers

[Q] Voodoo color fix is out??

I saw this thread and noticed it said it has the color fix, but I don't want to download it because it doesn't have the lagfix in it. But I don't see anything about the color fix in any other thread??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814286
The color fix is new, not in the old voodoo kernels. The new one is sweet, just as fast as voodoo although the benchmark will tell you otherwise. Voodoo will be added to the new kernel eventually, so you cant wait it out and be just fine or flash away, follow the fncking instructions though.
MOD EDIT: Edited the post so it won't contain any words that may be construed as offensive.
Not at all trying to be a downer because voodoo color looks pretty awesome, but what do you mean by "just as fast as voodoo". Are you saying that the kernel is OC'ed to be similar in performance to the stock volt/clock speed voodoo kernel, or that it handles I/O differently like a voodoo ext4 fix...
I guess what i'm saying is that your post is a bit vague and i was wondering if you could clarify.. Thanks
I'm still trying to figure out whats wrong with the colors on the fascinate? I don't see the fix that the other phones might have required.

I'm kind of wondering the same thing. LOL.
SAMOLED Displays by manufacture display colors with a blueish tint. You can even see this tint in the reflection of the display when the screen is off. The Voodoo color fix attempts to remedy this. At this point it will only fix the color when the backlight is set to 100%.
Any news about Colour fix? When will it be released? This full brightess setting is pretty much useless, because - well, it´s just too bright...
Would it be possible to give us an interface to control these settings ourselves?
This is the most waited fix for me and I believe I´m not the onlyone.

yeah! those pics are shows it very clear.
sorry man, it's a shame, but look the bright side, you can always use a kernel that supports Voodoo color. and btw, improve your sound.
look around!! this is XDA, here you can fix almost everything!!

Not a fan of Voodoo Color

I just tried the latest Samurai kernel with Voodoo Color and I am not a fan. I know a lot of people love it but personally I don't. At first boot your phone is dim. Then you have to download an app to set the colors. I tried several people's suggestions and didn't like any of them. So there is constant fiddling to get the colors the way I would like. Plus I had to turn my display up to about 35% when normally use about 15%. That has to eat up more battery, as well as constant adjusting. Then between the kernel and Voodoo app I am down 30 MB of RAM then what I normally have. I know for gaming it is probably the shizzle but for just a phone and browsing, not needed.
I flashed back to Samurai 2.08 and phone looks great still, lower screen brightness and actually is faster. Not sure if that is the kernel or lack of voodoo color.
Just had to get that out. I am sure this will open up a pros and cons discussion of voodoo color. I guess this would be a first edition of Kenny's Blog...LOL.

I dont really care much for it either. Whenever I start up a rom with a fresh voodoo kernel, the screen is piss yellow. I have tried a few different setting suggestions, but the screen is always way too blue. My friends drewl over this super AMOLED screen without doing anything to it.... i kind of agree with them.
Meh I tried it, thought itd be sweet, but not really lol. Using chainfire is better (Nightmode). Voodoo color is fun to mess with, for a few minutes XD

I agree. Didn't see significant benefit to having it either! (On the Epic) I think it can make a huge difference on other devices though, from images I've seen. Not to knock the Voodoo team as their work is awesome.
I AM a fan of CM7's RenderFX (and widgets) that can make the screen go all green or red or low cal night mode (and more) - each with a single toggle - is pretty damn sweet!
My feeling on this is if you need a program to custom tweak the nominal display colors as if its a high end digital cinema: maybe you got the wrong phone.

I like it, it makes my blacks blacker, and my whites whiter... as for the resources it takes, that I do agree with, not that it takes a lot, but 2.0.8 was a little quicker for me. I keep my phone at about 5 - 10 percent brightness all day. I think it looks nice though, personally I feel it is better then stock. And if you are getting the yellow stuff on boot, or on dim, probably have the wrong settings.

@kennyglass123
I've been tempted to post the same thing, but I assumed I must be doing something wrong because everyone else seems to love Voodoo Color. I tried every combination of settings that have been posted (including those above), and though they may add some punchiness, the colors always seem to be very unbalanced/inaccurate (either too blue, or too yellow, or too something else I can't put my finger on). I also tried dozens of my own combinations, just can't get it set to anything that doesn't end up bugging me after a while. Oh well, I'm going to follow your lead and flash back to 2.08 for a while and see if I miss Voodoo.
I like my phone really dark, and that might not be for everyone
Some of this may be due to inevitable inconsistencies in these screens of ours from their factory days. But I find VC to be preferable even at defaults. Colors seem much truer and the nasty bluish tint over much of the screen is lessened.
I love it. Not sure what it's doing for everyone else that doesn't seem to be causing a problem here.
Here are my settings, took me a bit to get my screen to where it looks best for me:
Voodoo profile
Red:247 -16
Green:224 -14
Blue:245 -15

Wow.. are you reading my mind? I flashed it and ran for a few days. Even a very non-technical co-worker saw my phone and asked if my screen was going out since the colors looked weird. She always commented on how beautiful the screen looked.
Had to crank up my screen brightness turning off auto-brightness as well which is killing my battery.
Soo..what's a stable Samurai to go to? I'm not interested in voodoo, oc/vu, just plain ole I want my daily driver to work.
2.08 is the recommended stable replacement according to Earthbound.

I wouldn't call it a problem, just like I said, not a fan. I tried several suggested settings and no matter what on some screen something always seemed off. That and having to crank the display brightness up is just not for me. I am real happy with the beauty of the stock colors. I see the potential for the voodoo color but it would take too much work and adjusting until I would be happy with it.

Did you try the other color profile?
im running Marcus's rom, which comes with sam 2.06.
I tried flashing the new sammy colonel last night, and aside from the fact that the colors looked piss yellow, it was really laggy.. to the point were i reflashed the rom to get 2.06 back.. didnt really see that coming
Also, Im not really sure what everyones talking about with the "blueish" tint of the stock colors. I held my epic up to my GFs Moto Atrix, expecting to marvel at how much better my samsung screen looked, only to find that (even on the stock, non-VC colors) it looked piss yellow compared to her moto.
So, aside from not wanting to have to eff with the color settings, the main kernal right now that has it, apparently, hates my phone anyways

Only on 1st boot and look. Then I saw everyone using the 2nd profile and tried all the settings I can find. There was always something off, one was too blue, one was too warm, one was too brown, and all were too dark requiring at least doubling my normal brightness setting which uses up more battery.
I would spend time tweaking my TV a little but don't want to keep doing it for the phone. It is awesome that it is better than sliced bread for a lot of users but just not for me.

Green Screen Syndrome

Its just a **** load of hyperbole.
Go into Voodoo Sound and scroll down to "Voodoo Color" and adjust the sliders.
NO ONE has the same screen/eye combo so what looks smexy for the kernel dev might look like a drunk heffer to you.
Personally my phone doesn't experience the green screen because I sat there and adjusted each value till I got the color reproduction I wanted (it may not be "true white" but I like my vibrantness ) so people, get off your asses and make your phone YOUR PHONE by putting in what you feel is the most comfty for your eyes.
If that's too much for you and you'd rather wait for the kernel devs to **** up their colors on their screen so that your BASE colors may or may not be correct, then maybe you shouldn't be worried about color and just stick with stock dull values.

Lol really? All I see in every rom thread is "my screen is green I flashed this kernel cuz I want voodoo color but I can't be bothered to read through 50 pages to see the fix". And the replies are all "SEARCH!!1!11ONE!!"
The purpose of this thread is so people who have the green screen can open and see how their laziness contributes to their problem.
I am all in favor of turning this into a settings discussion but the main purpose has been stated
Also, my settings are very inaccurate, not true colors at all lol but just raise your gamma a tiny bit and everything will be good

I see your point but i guess were just trying to get them to be less lazy is all haha, and voodoo color will depend on each kernel like shadow vs samurai but there kind of identical so pretty much same settings should give same results.

If by green screen, you mean the flash of green everytime I unlock my phone, then its not "laziness" that contributes to the problem, its the ShadowKernel. I am not going to raise my gamma settings so that the screen is completely washed out just so the green flash doesn't happen when I unlock my phone. I have been using voodoo color for a LONG time spanning multiple versions of androids and at least a half a dozen different kernels, and this is a the ONLY one that has had this problem. I have always used the "punchy" setting, and this is the only time I have ever seen that green flash.

Its definitely your laziness giving you the green screen.
People moaned and groaned to bbelos about how he should incorporate custom settings into shadow so that they can have nice ass colors out the box, and on bbelos phone it can handle low gamma obviously which is why the gamma is so low and he put his values in and everyone expected it to lookk the same on their phones and couldn't be bothered with no type of personalization on their part.
If you can't manage to slide your gamma bars a little to the right to correct this problem, then don't complain when the fix is posted. You've obviously never bothered to mess with the sliders because if you did, you would've seen how much raising the gamma 2 values "washes out the screen".
Don't try to throw your $.02 in if you can't even bother to try it, otherwise your opinion is one sided and void.

You're a blithering idiot who didn't even read my post. Making my screen look like **** isn't a "fix". I have run the "punchy" gamma settings on multiple roms and multiple versions of Android, and NEVER had a green flash when waking the device . . . . . until CM9 and Voodoo Color.
I like how my phone looks with all of the gamma settings set to -45. Yet you are telling me the FIX is to set them to -43? Hint, it still happens when the gamma is set to -30 for all values, and the screen looks significantly ****tier.
I do love how you make assumptions though and freely insult others based solely on your own arrogance. Its very cute.

Calm down. I wonder, if voodoo color just doesn't work they way you want it to, after messing with the sliders and you still aren't satisfied.. wouldn't it be best just to leave it alone?

Gpad screen gamma is too low

Some of you may have noticed it's difficult to watch dark scenes in movies on the gpad. I think the problem is the gamma calibration, you can see it clearly on the pictures I took.
https://imageshack.com/i/nf96iaj
On the top you can see my nexus 7 2013, you can differentiate all the shades of grey from 1% white to 100%.
On the gpad, everything is solid black from 1% to 12% of white.
You can find the original image here : http://imageshack.us/f/594/6291.png/
How low can you go, on your gpad, before the grey melts with the black ?
Do you know an app to apply gamma correction ?
Here you can see the same picture on the N7 and the gpad. You can't even distinguish the guy's ear on the g pad.

I see the difference, and I knew it was there already also.. I'm sorry, but apparently gamma is not something that is doable. - I was looking to link you the app from market called "Screen Adjuster", however you want to look at this description, especially the last sentence. ;/
- dimming the screen 15-100% (below minimum system brightness)
- screen color and a contrast adjustment
- system brightness 0-100% adjustment
- functional widget (on/off, system brightness, settings)
- autorun option
Some phones have a color tint screen. This app have a possibility to try to improve colors on this kind of the screen by setting an additional factor RGB.*
The range of the dimmer is from 15% to 100% (it allows to dim the screen below a min system brightness value). Make a relief for your eyes during a nightly reading.
Furthermore, you can change fast the system brightness too.
The additional contrast factor can try to make the reading or a picture viewing more comfortable on some screens.*
The widget provides fast on/off service with a shortcuts to the Adjuster settings and the system brightness settings.
The application has the autorun option which works with the dimmer set above 22% (for the safety).
Note
A gamma adjustment is not possible to do.
You can of course try and download the app anyways and see if contrast or brightness will do anything for ya.
- In case you do download the app, remember that setting contrast low will result in problems with installing apps, as in you cannot hit Install, only cancel. To avoid this, open up Screen Adjuster and turn it off, install the app and turn it back on afterwards. It's something about lowering the settings to lower than what is "intended", I don't quite understand it and I find it rather odd. But it let's you install apps.. So I guess hooray.
That's all I got.

Thank you for your response, but I'm already using screen adjuster. I set the contrast at -25 and it helps a lot to see dark details.
Unfortunately, it has two side effects :
- it brightens the dark shades of grey, but also the black levels.
- I noticed that the contrast setting also affects the white making it look like light grey.
So the contrast setting in screen adjuster doesn't affects only the dark tones like it would on a monitor or a tv, it affects the contrast ratio.
I've found apps to make gamma adustment but it only works on some devices with custom kernel.

Yea, I was about to say that gamma can be done but only on custom kernels. Lot of Nexus 5 stuff on the market. Apparently it's Google who locked the gamma settings completely down but only in 4.4.2. I guess it may work on stock LG Kernel since it's only 4.2.2? I'm afraid we'll have to wait for some kernel support for other roms. That would be awesome. I really hope for some Franco-kernel-glory on this device.
That's what I thought, we need to wait for custom kernels...I hope it will come soon, because it's so frustrating to have such a good screen with bad calibration !
People tends to complain too much about the warm white balance but the gamma calibration is far more concerning.

I hope @dalingrin can cook something up to address both. He said he was going to work on something.

Yes it would be great if he did , though he's done so much for us already.

Hi there Young Bobbie, I am new to posting on XDA so I couldn't post this in your kernel developer page. This is my first post on any forum page ever. First off, thank you very much for your hard work to make this kernel happen to correct gamma on the v500. I have been sitting on the fence whether to get the gpad, and if i would get the v500 or the v510. Was leaning toward the v510 because of Sleekmason's wonderful kernel work, but it's exciting that we have now have the same options available for the v500. I noticed this was working fully with the Malladus ROM. My question to you was whether or not this worked with stock LG ROM as well? Thank you again YoungBobbie and Sleekmason for your time and creations.
Sorry, just answered my own question. Guess it helps to read the very first line of the page (making fun of myself now ;-P) Thank you again YoungBobbie and sleekmason!!!
