So I rooted my phone using donjuans guide. I believe I have cyanogen 5.0.8.
While its nice I don't like the 2.1 android deal. I liked the 2.2.1 on here(OEM).
After browsing these forums I've seen mainly Ginger yoshi and cyanogen. Could someone compare the 2 for me? Is 2.3 worth it? How easy is it to go from one to the other.
I'm a noob to this business but not an idiot so hopefully I wont be much of a bother to the xda gods.

My buddy that I've know for years is with Verizon and is due for an upgrade. This guy is a computer nut that loves to hack, tweak, customize etc. My nephew has a DX an absolutely loves it. My friend has never had an android phone and asked me to point him in the right direction.... I told him to get the DX. I'm going to help him root it and flash roms..... I have an evo and know it inside out and have flashed everything under the sun. When he does get it what custom rom do you suggest that has plenty of themes and bells and whistles? My nephew suggested Rubix and I'm not familiar with ANY of the DX roms. I want to start my friend on the right foot with android and have a few roms ready to flash for him so he loves the android community as much as I do. So if anyone could let me know what the top 5 roms to flash that would be awesome. Thanks in advance and bababooey to you all

Rubix Focused 1.9.7 is truly the fastest rom in terms of performance. Also the battery life is bar none. I use an extended battery and with normal use (not in my hand every minute) I have no problem getting two days on a charge. If you want a few extra features in an easy to use toolbox app than Liberty 1.5 is a great rom as well. I switch between the two whenever I'm bored and want a change. These are the only two roms worth a mention in my opinion if removing the blur and bloat is your intent.
This all depends on what you what you are looking for. I would suggest that you spend some time reading over the threads in Forum Droid X Android Development:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=691
I have only used two ROMs but did a lot of research on the most popular.
I am currently using Liberty 1.5 and I am loving it. It's Liberty ToolBox allows some heavy, yet easy, customization.
Yeah he's the kind of Guy that will be a flashaholic. I know I'm flashing new roms a few times a week on my Evo and I'm sure he'll be the same. Just wondering if the dx will keep him flashing.

No there aren't any others. What are you looking for? You can have Android 2.1 minus all of the AT&T bloatware and wireless tethering (Liberated 2.1 L012), Android 2.2 (CM 6.1 or Liberated 2.2 FR008) or Android 2.3/Gingerbread (CM 7).
All of these can be customized and themed.
all available ROM's can be found In THIS Thread
Want another ROM?

the aria was a decent selling mid-range device. it didn't garner much attention cause it isn't a massive top end powerhouse like the inspire or atrix. because of this, the dev pool was small. really small.
its cool to see theres still an interest in the phone, but its just not as popular as bigger phones to get as big of a dev pool.
I was origonally using my vibrant which I bricked a couple days ago... Came back to my G2 and now I'm scared to try and root it. I need a little convincing. Can you guys help way the pros and cons?
PS - my warranty on the G2 is up.

The latest (a long time ago) HTC updates killed the speed and performance of the device. Rooting and installing a new ROM will not only keep it up to date they will keep it running better than when you got it day one. Heck you can even install ICS if ya like.
DO IT!
P.S. You sure your vibrant is actually bricked?
For me it made all the difference in the world. You can remove the bloatware, overclock, and choose a rom you like. I've been going back and forth from andromadus ics and mexdroid atomic lately.

Sorry to be pedantic (it's my middle name though). But there's often confusion between rooting and S-OFF/unlocking.
S-OFF is the big thing to get, to open up the world of new ROMs (and S-OFF is far preferable to using the HTCdev bootloader unlock), new radios etc.
Rooting your ROM gives you access to extra stuff, like useful apps that need root (TitaniumBackup being a great example).

Know what you mean, but I've rooted thing thing once. I couldn't get s-on at unroot.

I'm running a rooted Evo 3d so I don't know much about what goes on here. My wife has finally decided to let me root her phone. What are some good stable ROMs that are a good balance of preformance and speed? Preferably de-bloated. Also is there a preference root method. I'm at work and on my phone so my ability to research is a bit limited for now. Thanks
Well my friend, this is the EVO 4G section, not the EVO 3d section =p but I would say check out team nocturnal and swagstr for roms for the 4g if its what your using.. Usually very stable and fast. If your looking for 3d roms, try team nocturnal also
My wife is using the OG Evo. I'm set on my situation. I was looking into rooting her phone for her. I'll look into Nocturnal.
I would recommend Mikg rom it is completely stable has a lot of themes and amazing support. As for root method it depends on android version. If the phone is 2.3.5 you have to use HTCdev its like hboot 1.5 for the og. If its 2.3.3 you have to use revolutionary.io and check what hboot you have. If 2.2 you have to use unrevoked

Also, if your wife is kind of a girly girl, diablo67 has a pink themed ROM on here that he put a lot of work into.

SOS X..Sense, No bloat, fast and when combined with lionfish kernel you get great AOSP-like battery life...
I'd agree with the SOS X recommendation. Can't go wrong with MikG though.
Root your wife's phone? Run in the opposite direction and run very fast... No win situation! lol

Tommy Tomato EVO CLASSIC ROM... I have tried many others and this is by far the best sense rom I have used. Extremely smooth and stable. I've even tried a few after being on it for awhile, but I keep coming back to the classic. I say give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.

I have been running rooted for 5 months and have become very fond of the Cyanogen Mod7.1. this has been very solid and i discover new functionality daily. This make your evo the swiss army knife of phones.
Nitrous
I can't say enough about Nitrous -- running it for a couple months now. The RAM to SDcard feature gives me loads of memory to work with, and the ROM is super fast even considering that the SD RAM probably adds lag time.
CyanogenMod 7.1

You should also partition her sd card to get more space with any rom you use. I'll say MIUI its clean and simple and many many themes.

Guys im sure as hell no newbie to rooting my own personal phones , but tomorrow my sister is visiting me from Florida with her new Evo on a fresh sprint 2 year contact (yeah dont ask) but anyways she wants to root her phone to tether on WiMAX. Could you guys guide me to the right links on rooting her phone and tell me which rom will be a kick ass rom for her. Most likely that will be the ROM she'll stay with for the rest of her contract.
Searching old thread isn't my thing. I rather suscribe to my own thread.
Also is the rooting process hard? My EVO 3d was a pain in the ass.

It all depends on the software. If its on 2.2 froyo you would use unrevoked. If its on GB 2.3.3 you would use revolutionary.io and if its GB 2.3.5 you have to use HTC dev unlock. I recommend that you put tommytomatoes classic rom on her phone. Its 100% stable and fully working and has great community support

+2 on tommy's rom. Is under the new evo 4g original development section. As far as rooting go is pretty straight forward, just find out which android version she is running ( which might be 2.3.5 ), and go from there.

Depends on preference, Tommy's rom's great. but have some variants for her. also may just show her some rom's she'll most likely want gb for stability and best performance. also HTC Sense rom's lagg a bit in my opinion AOSP seems to lag less for me and run more in a operational fashion.
edit install rom manager on her device and keep her stock rooted tell her she can change the software via that app. screen shot's info and downloads all in one nice little user friendly app.
Thanks for the great info guys. I'll be working on her phone tonight.
Just to make sure, with these roms, she still be able to use the HDMI out on the phone?
