[Q] Glass cracked - what to replace? - Epic 4G General

I dropped my epic on tile, and the glass cracked. Touch Screen seems fine, and the LCD itself is okay too.
Most parts places seem to sell the glass and LCD/Digitizer as a package (for $80-$120), but I've found a place that sells just the glass/front cover for $45. Is there any reason not to get just the glass/cover without the LCD?

I have heard it was a little trickier than doing the assembly.

Not really the galss and digitiser are connected for better veiwing and you can't really get them apart.

http://cnn.cn/shop/samsung-epic-digitizerlcd-unit-p-10021.html this is specifically what I ordered when I dropped mine, and you can't replace the glass separately as it is one piece with the digitizer and the LED unit. When I ordered mine it was $79 off this website, I suppose the price has gone up if you can find it for less you should do that. The screen took about 3 hours to replace my first time being careful and double checking everything. Use black RTV silicone to keep it in place - do not use any other adhesive. It's definitely a 8/10 in difficulty as it requires steady hands and patience up the ying yang.

you're right, it's Cover + Digitizer, or Cover + Digitizer + LCD.
According to the thread linked above, getting one with LCD is much easier

I dropped my phone, and the glass cracked. I went to a sprint store, and I didn't have insurance. They fixed it for $35.

You can probably cancel the order before it's shipped if you'd like to try the $35option.

Best bet imo. Repair stores are life savers.

If you go to a store, make sure it's a repair center by searching for a nearby store on the sprint site.
I made the mistake of going into the nearest corporate store with my tp2 that would randomly think the keyboard had opened and subsequently unlock the phone in the pouch. The idiots at the store kept it for 3 hours and "recalibrated" the screen... it was a hardware problem, not software
When I busted the screen on my Epic, I found a Sprint store that was a repair center. ANY repair other than mainboard damage or water damage is a flat $35 for any phone. Kinda makes the idea of insurance worthless(already is with the deductible). They had a complete shell of an Epic with keyboard and screen, and simply swapped my mainboard into it. So, no activation or data loss/transfer.

Also, the replacement you ordered might be a cheap LCD instead of a SAMOLED like Samsung puts on the phone to start with.

I think it's certainly a possibility. A lot of the replacement screens on ebay and elsewhere claim to be LCD. I can't confirm that they're LCDs or SAMOLED, but I'd wonder.

no - you did the right thing by ordering it off ebay. I worked for sprint and back in september they started repairing phones for 35 bucks.. but on the epic, they changed their policy to NOT repair screens on the epic. they made me pay 100 dollars for a replacement even though i've been carrying the 7 dollar a month insurance, though i had a crack on my LCD.
i purchased the replacement from asurian for 100, bought the 80 dollar replacement screen, frankensteined that on to my old phone, sold the new one for 275
screw you sprint :l
tl;dr: sprint changes policies to throat ram customers yet again

Crack screens are not covered in store anymore with TEP or not per policy, some stores are more lenient. If you have TEP you have the option to file a claim through Asurion just like LD.
If you are going to try and do it yourself, I would suggest buying the TSP and screen together. The LED is so thin it is nearly impossible to take off w/o breaking it. I have yet to get one off w/o it breaking. The screens I have replaced, we always keep the 2 parts together as one.

Do you get to keep the broken phone or they take it for replacement in case of broken screen.

What do you mean? When filing the Asurion claim? Or when we replace screen?

cnn.cn's website advertised the epc replacement screen as an LCD - when i received it it was clearly LED and was the same exact screen as any other epic. There are many layers to an LCD screen that would be obvious upon first glance when compared to an amoled screen.

Two weeks ago I was leaving the office in a hurry and had an epic fail on my part. I put my laptop in the trunk and as I was closing it I managed to drop my keys in the trunk and my Epic landed screen down on the parking lot. From the sickening crunch that I heard I knew this was going to end badly. I picked up the phone and sure enough it had landed on a tiny piece of gravel that shattered the screen so now I was standing in with a broke phone and my keys locked in the trunk. I put a piece of packing tape on the screen to keep the pieces together until I could make it to the repair center. I dropped it off a couple of days later. They told me it would take a couple of hours to fix and I could pick it up later that day. When I picked it up I had a new screen and they even put on a new screen protector to “replace the one that I previously had”. I got a chuckle out of that since it was just a strip of packing tape. The big surprise was when I was told that I didn't owe anything. I didn't care what it was going to cost anyways because the phone is on a corporate business account so it wasn't going to cost me anything. I would hope that they extend the same kind of a courtesy to regular customers from time to time and not just large accounts

Busted Outer Glass of LCD

Well I dropped my G1 the other day and it busted the outer glass part. The LCD is fine and it still works perfect. I have looked everywhere, with no luck of finding any parts for them. So I called HTC and they told me 150-250 to replace the glass!! So I was wondering if any one know anyone that does G1 Repair or if anyone know of another phone that has more ava. parts for it with a 3.17" Screen? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Nope, I got AT&T. Was thinking of taking apart the phone and getting the glass measurements and having a custom cut piece of glass.
i believe its a special type of glass
Pretty much stuck buying the glass from HTC on this one ...sorry
PS... it is glass
iphone 3g - Dream lcd
I read that the same screen is in use on the iphone 3g, I doubt its true they probably meant type or sumthin, maybe worth a check...
on the old palm pdas you could replace just the glass if the layer under it isn't damaged, this may no longer be possible with these screens, once the bigtime flashing begins there will be lots of bricks available pretty cheap, maybe you should keep an eye out for somebody who pooched the dev bootloader install then after you convince them they killed it you could buy it maybe for less than the HTC price...
gotta say, that sucks if you were a tmob customer you'd have a few options...
bhang
Hello. Don't you think It's weird that it happened to me too today?
I've never had a broke phone since my Nokia 8210.
Well, some idiot had placed out one of those kinds of plastic bands you use to seal packages with, a black one.
It was pitch dark and I fell as the plastic ring got snared around my feet. Obviously my Jabra bt3030 got pushed against the screen and it got severely cracked.
My insurance company seems to be covering the whole phone except a small sum. This was from the phone part, but I got to see if I can get something from the health insurance as I hit my head and scratched my hand (though not likely but I can always try)
The touch seems to work most of the time, though it reacts slowly but some times It's just dead.
This really sucks.
I'm dead serious when I'm talking that there was no way that the band could be seen when walking.

It is glass. But you can not simply cut a piece of glass to the same dimension as the touchscreen is integrated into the glass cover. So yes you will need to get a htc or aftermarket replacement part.
The interesting thing is that the repair cost you quoted is identical to the cost of the copay if you go with the Asurion device insurance T-mo offers. So device insurance would just be a waste of money at $5 a month if you end up with broken glass.
Looks like I will just have to hold onto it until aftermarket parts come out. I busted mine by letting it slip out of my hand while talking on it....then it took a 6ft fall to eventually land face first on concrete.....I didnt even wanna pick it up cause i new it was messed up and if it wasnt I was gonna call HTC and give them props! I have a ava. upgrade from AT&T Maybe get a Iphone until this one gets fixed then sale iphone on ebay for 5x wuts its worth.
The iphone's screen seems to crack pretty nice as well.
I hope changing the glass on the G1 isn't as frustrating as on the Iphone.

Cracked screen replacement with compatible HW from third party --when?
I cracked the LCD of my G1 after about three weeks and have noted that neither PPCTechs nor MobileKangaroo have yet acquired a source for the replacement screen.
My understanding is that HTC currently charges what one thread in another forum (http://www.allshadow.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=4226) quoted as "a minimum of $238.00" to make this repair.
I expect this repair to be offered soon by third parties for about $150, likely using a non-HTC screen product to replace the damaged one.
Has anyone heard any reports about forthcoming availability of such hardware? If so, then are there any non-HTC services to make the replacement?
yeah im looking for this too...i dropped mine and then proceeded to step on it day two with the phone.

This waht i found out
so have the same issue and this is what I found out
so from my understanding there are 2 part to the lcd the outer glass touch sensor and the inner lcd. if the the screen is just cracked and you can see the image the u have to replace both. attached are the part descriptions fromt he g1 service manual. and below is a link of a site that sells them, but for some reason they sell the touch scrren with the outer bezel making it cost more. i called htc to order just the touch sensor glass but they said the dont sell replacements, they just fix em

I contacted the seller of the screen and he/she told me that It's only the screen. If the G1 cracks It's the digitizer glass that cracks first. Then if you are unlucky the screen cracks as well. I managed to only crack the digitizer glass. The screen beneath is totally fine. Unfortunately removing the glass from the digitizer plastic was very painful and I managed to wreck the flat cable of the digitizer so that's beyond repair. Now I tried to disassemble the whole phone but I got stuck at removing the housing. First I had problems with the Torx bits. I have some Torx bits in my sets but the lowest I got was T8. I had to buy a cellphone bits set with a lot of different types of bits. It had Torx all the way down to T4. The T5 and T6 was what I needed. There are 4 T5 to remove and one T6. I have inserted the sharp plastic between the housing and the top case and released all hooks but it seems the front and back part of the housing of the phone is dead stuck.
You have to open the whole damn phone from the back to get to the inside of the screen. Why the screen housing uses standard Philips is also beyond me. I have lots of bad experience with standard Philips screws. The heads always get bad after a while of screwing. I have yet to have a problem with Torx.

Shattered / Cracked Gorilla Glass...what to do??

I just got my DVP a few days ago...
Today I dropped it (the first time it dropped) and it shattered the glass...
everything works fine still...it is just so ugly I would like to get it fixed...
What can I do?
I cannot find any replacement parts, I cannot find any repair shops for this phone also... currently I am on hold trying to call dell (hopefully they give me good news?)....
I am lost and disappointed -I cant believe I cracked it esp. this soon!..
well I am asking for your advice / comments / help on this one, XDA ...
please advise me...
UPDATE: dell said it would be 249.99 to get a replacement phone...
good deal? or should I just get another phone or something? I am thinking of going through with it to get it done, but if there are cheaper options I am interested...
Did you try checking with @dellcares on Twitter? Someone had a similar issue the other day and said @dellcares helped them. Not sure exactly what the outcome was, but worth a shot.

you're lucky then. They sent me a copy of the posting on their community forums telling me its absolutely not covered. I could replace my 16g device...for $499.00. But they would throw in free over night shipping.
While it sucks, I think it's hard to argue with this stance unless people start to report widespread screen cracks. I've dropped mine a couple of times and no problems (~knock on wood~) and I have not read about a rampant issue with screen fragility, so at the moment it sounds like you were just damned unlucky.
My phone just fell at the train station and the freaking screen cracked. Damn. I called T-Mobile . .The rep at first didn't even know what it was and asked if it was a tablet. Put me on hold for over 10 mins then asked me to call Asurion and see what they said.
Asurion rep put me on hold for about 5 mins and then said it wasn't a supported phone.
I then called Dell Mobility. Lady told me $249 for a replacement. wow! I told her I'd think about it. Though it's half the cost I could get an HD7 straight from T-Mobile for less than $100 with contract renewal

I had a similar situation - wife dropped and our small son stepped on her Venue Pro, cracking the upper right corner of the gorilla glass. The phone still worked fine, even in the impacted area -- it just looked ugly and glass continue to chip off. Dell offered to replace it for $250.
I found the replacement glass from the below site, ordered it and it took about 2 months to arrive (they were out of stock initially).
mobilephonecrazy.com/modeldetail/Venue-Pro,LCD_Glass_Lens_Screen_.htm
I successfully swapped out the glass today and it was tedious being careful not to break anything and lose parts, but not too bad if you're patient - it took me about an hour. Remove the backing and battery and there are 6 black screws to remove (one was covered by a white sticker for me). I just used my finger nail to go around the edge of the lower housing (not LCD) until I was able to wiggle and eventually pop it free (be gentle, don't force it). Then extend the slider so the keyboard is exposed. Rotate 90 degrees from the lower housing you separated from, being careful not to damage the cables that attach the LCD to the lower housing. There are then 4 screws that secure the digitizer / glass to the LCD and slider housing. Two you can see internally once you rotate 90 degrees as above. The other two are always visible with the slider extended (keyboard visible) but they're under 2 black stickers at the top of the screen on the back. I just used a push pin under the edges to pop off the stickers. After removing these 4 screws, again I used my finger nail working my way around to pop off and remove the digitizer / glass from the LCD and slider housing. Once free, there is a single cable connection to remove the digitizer / glass from the LCD. Check the replacement glass as a guide for where these last 4 screws are and where the cable connects (top of the screen near the speaker). The cable just pops on / off.
Ensure you clean the underside of your new screen and the LCD is free of dust / debris / fingerprints before reassembling! Snap on the glass to the LCD / slider housing and install those 4 screws first, then rotate back 90 degrees to pop on the lower housing and then finally re-install those 6 screws. Mine fired right back up and works fine...I was a little nervous with potential damage to the exposed cables and separating the housings, but it turned out fine.

I just replaced mine last night. A bit heart stopping at times as there are a lot of fragile cables and little thingst that can fall out but if you have a good light, a small star-shaped screwdriver, and patience, you can do it. I bought the glass from an EBAY seller in china. Took less than 14 days to arrive and the cost was a lot cheaper than the UK seller you see in the posting (I paid like $74, with shipping). My DVP looks new now. I tooks some pictures as I was taking the thing appart and will try and post later.
I was able to create a very raw an amateourish video for youtube. Hopefully you can use this link to get to it //youtu.be/pnOnYZDZfrw I hope this helps somebody out there that needs to replace the glass on their DVP!

now what....
I shattered the front glass on my DVP and bought a replacement on Ebay from a seller in Hong Kong. I watched a youtube video and managed to take the phone apart and replace the screen successfully. If you do this, be warned that there a few pieces that are not attached to the motherboard that will just fall out. Be sure to notice where they came from. For me, a little board running the on/off button and the camera lens fell out. It was easy to put them back in their place. HOWEVER........
Everything works now except I see the letters "ENU" up near the clock, and the virtual keyboard will not appear. Do you think this means the phone thinks the keyboard slider is out because of something I screwed with while the phone was apart?
I just installed the Mango 8107.79 update, and the keyboard still will not appear. So I know its not a bug. The EM app (you get after pressing qwertyuiop and doing the "man machine interface test") is telling me the slider is open when its not.
What does ENU mean? Just be careful if you replace your own screen!!

ENU means that the next letter you type is going to be upper case.

Yes, I think you are probably correct.
Mine says 'ENG', so I would guess it represents the language. 'ENU' is probably English - United States. The code seems to appear when the physical keyboard is pulled out. (It doesn't seem to be visible when using just the on-screen keyboard).
thanks....
Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I guess I'll take it apart again and see if I can figure out why the keyboard is stuck in pulled-out-mode. I feel guilty now, because I just bought a Lumia 710 to replace my DVP, but the display is nowhere as beautiful. The Dell really is a great product....

Screen shattered!

Have a shattered screen on a friends device. Insurance claim is going to run $100 to replace. Does anyone know a cheaper way to get a replacement screen installed?
You can get them for around $20 on amazon and its easy to do yourself. There are guides on youtube.
Check your local Craigslist, lots of guys in my area doing screens.
I'd do it myself. I talk apart my EVO plenty of times. Never replaced the screen but it'd be easy.

Yep amazon ... Look for digitizer and watch YouTube video. Did mine no prob but took a little longer than it should have cause I didn't even have a blow dryer in my house so was holding it up to a lamp to help melt the adhesive lol ... Mine was totally shattered so it didn't pry out very easy
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Ask for a one-time courtesy replace on the screen. A nice technician (like myself ) should do it for you.
Any way to know which pin you have without opening it up?
Sent from my EVO
I was in the same boat but unfortunately I watched a video where the guy didn't use a heatgun or anything, but said you could slowly pop it out. Well, being my screen was already half shattered is was VERY difficult to remove(I think it had more adhesive then normal?) and ultimately, I messed the LCD so now I have a nice glass but can't see half my screen. LOL, you live and learn.
Also, what can be used to glue the digitizer and LCD back in place?
I went to a Sprint store with a repair center and the guy replaced it for free in 15 mins. Call around to see if a Sprint store has the part to fix it. It's only 100 dollars if it goes through the insurance. If they have the part, they will do it free.

[GUIDE][WIP][DIY] **UPDATE! VIDEO ADDED** Nexus 4 Digitizer and LCD Replacement Guide

So ive had my Nexus 4 for about 2 weeks now and i love this phone! i recently went to Dallas with my Mom and Sister over the weekend. Upon getting to the hotel, my Nexus decides to slip out of my hand onto the concrete. When i picked it up, it had a crack on the top right corner of its face. No big deal, right? Wrong! The top half of the screen is completely unresponsive. Good thing i brought my Galaxy Nexus to hold me off through the trip. Once i settled in at the hotel, I whipped out my laptop and bought a replacement screen. I ordered from this site... http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-lg-...-assembly-with-front-housing-and-battery.html
Also, Mods, please move to appropriate forum if necessary.

Judging from ifixit, it's going to be pretty hard to replace the screen. Would you mind keeping us updated on your progress here? I'm curious to see how hard it's going to be.
The glass is fused to both the display and the display frame. So don't crack the glass unless you're good with a heat gun, or you're fond of replacing the glass, display, and frame together ($$$).

Yeah, i ordered the entire front housing, (battery, display, digitizer, and frame) for a total of $186.72... I already have my Nexus 4 disassembled. I'm just waiting for the screen which should get here Wednesday. And yes, I will update this post as i replace the screen.

I don't think its worth buying the set for $180 and then risking doing it yourself, I sent mine to lg and they're repairing it for $140 total.. Although the price may vary based on the damage..

you can get just the lcd and digitizer for 160 too, might be worth it if you dont have to ship it to LG or if it's an easy diy. There's even a b-stock lcd and digitizer for 140, the lightbleed special?
When you sent the phone to LG was it overseas or in the US? Also whats the website? thanks

i recently cracked my front display, but it still works fine. i'm looking into replacement options and i don't believe the suggested link you posted is a good choice, because the front panel + digitizer + lcd are all fuzed together and i don't have a heat gun...
http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-lg-...nd-digitizer-assembly-with-front-housing.html
this option is probably best at 120... but then i just read this on ifixit:
"The battery is stuck to the frame with a lot of adhesive, so removing it without puncturing the battery can be difficult."
so... looks like the 160 pre shipping/taxes is the best choice

just as an fyi - lg is saying their repair cost is from 40-150 dollars approx... i might just go this route since it doesn't void warranty and i won't screw anything up myself

Thanks buddy,
The same happened to me. But unfortunately i'm located in India.. Is it possible to purchase this Display assembly from India..
I'm really worried..
Hi,
I'm sorry to dig out the old thread, but i'm trying to fix my N4 of similar problem but i have a question:
Is there a way to separate the LCD from the digitizer? This way i can keep the LCD and get only the digitizer to save cost as my LCD is still working perfectly. In ebay, an OEM Digitizer+LCD assembly cost USD100+ (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Touch-D...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item3cd597ce9d) but the standalone digitizer only cost about half of it (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-TOUCH-S...er_Cell_Phone_Accessories&hash=item43bf9536ff).
All the instruction that i can find so far on the internet involve replacing the entire assembly.
Battery bending under removal
I'm also sorry to have to reply to an old thread, but I am in urgent need of an answer.
I recently cracked my phone's screen. I ordered a screen+frame repair kit, and got repairing. However, when removing the battery, When prying it from the phone, I realized that the battery was soft, and my tool I was using to pry it off was actually bending it. The battery seems to be curved overall, and slightly pushed on some edges. Also, a weird "sweet" smell came from the phone. Perhaps the smell is the adhesive that sticks the battery to the phone; I do not know.
Will it be safe to use the same battery again? Or should I go ahead and purchase a new one?
Wouldn't a hair dryer work as an alternative heat gun

I wouldn't recommend doing so as a LCD+digitizer assembly cists around $60USD I did not think its worth seperating them but you can use a hairdryer to soften the adhesive

Anyone else have their devices replaced by Assurant?

I had my phone since release and use a solid case and screen protector. I've dropped it so many times I've lost count with no damage at all. I typically take my phone out the case and clean it every other day or if it gets dirt. Well 2 weeks ago I dropped it from a semi and it hit a rock screen face down and shattered the screen. I paid the deductible and got my new one in a few days later. Well I dropped it in it's case with a screen protector at Walmart from waste high and later that night I took it out and the back is shattered. Odd but didn't care too much. Well today my kid knocked my phone off from my bed which is 3 feet from the ground and it landed on the TV remote and I have a small crack on my screen now.
I do not believe Assurant replaces screen with Gorilla Glass at all. My first S7 Edge took a beating without any damage for a long time. This one takes light drops and cracks instantly.
Assurant doesn't fix your phone. They just process the return and shipping for tmobile, who sends all used/insurance claim phones back to Sammy to refurbish
It is possible someone fixed their own screen with a cheap eBay set (like I did) then turned the phone into tmobile for an upgrade or whatever and they sent it to you as a refurbished replacment.

I bought a glass only replacement for 20 bucks.
Watched a YouTube video and with some nitrogen and some suction cups the glass will let go of the touch screen.
