Hi.
Does anyone know how to access them so you're not having to create new folders on the SD?
Could you be any more clear?

Don't really understand your question but if you are after the locations of the default wallpapers and ringtones then you can find them here:
ringtones: /system/media
wallpapers: you will have to unpack the /system/app/Launcher.apk, wallpapers are inside the res/drawable-240dpi

Hi.
There are default wallpapers on the phone, so I would like to put any new ones in the same folder which isn't on the sd card, and I've found the "notification" folder on the sd card but the default tones aren't in there, so I'm guessing I need to access the phone memory to make any changes.
This is my first Android phone so I'm finding my way around just now.

Ok, I think I understand you better now. So, like I said, the location for the ringtones is what I already mentioned. Since this is the system partition, you will need root access and remount the /system partition into read/write mode in order to be able to add files to the directory.
For the wallpapers, this was just a quick check, but like I said, the Launcher.apk has the wallpapers bundled within it. You can easily rip it, take it apart using apktool and add or replace the default wallpapers.
IMHO though, it is lot simpler to add a new folder on the SD card and use applications like ASTRO or handcent sms to set ringtones/wallpapers for you.

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing as the ringtones in my notification folder couldn't be selected as ringtones i.e they didn't even show up, but did show up for messaging, so I created a new folder "Ringtones" on the SD, bobbed a few files in there and now they show up as selectable tones.
Thanks for the advice though.

Because you're changing the software on the phone, so if you have any problems it will be your fault in the eyes of the Operator/SE.
But how do they know that I have rooted phone ?

lol they wont know a thing until you take your rooted phone to the service centre for repair but before you do so you can roll back to original firmware and they wont notice a thing..

I would assume it's from whatever diagnostics they would run to diagnose any issues you claim to be having.
Maybe, but i won't risk and root it, maybe will something go wrong and then....
I found this problem in miui 3 and some others
the progress bar is halt at 100% but no installation.

A workaround not a complete fix but... When you get that problem again go to your download folder using any explorer application, like ES FILE EXPLORER, order the list by date added and you will find your appin the 1st position. Just install it- from there-. This fix work for the 100% downloaded application case but not installed
i think when you unmount the sd and install the apk it goes to the data.img in android folder, because this is acting as internal memory on android build... correct me if im wrong... but it works for me all the time and the aps are on sd...

Search for 'move to SD'.
Search the Market for App 2 SD
App to sd opened up about 25% more memory. Thanks guys
You can also try Darktremor a2sd script. It should allow you to move not only apps that can be moved to SD card but every apps along with the dolvik cache and user data files.
I haven't tried it on my HD2 yet and I know its still in beta, so I can't guarantee you whether it will work or not. But at least it worth a try. If u wanna try it do a nandroid backup first, just in case it mess something...

You can delete unused stock apps by purchasing an app called 'Root Explorer' from the market (or install any root-enabled file explorer really, i just like root explorer the best lol) and delete the .apk file of whatever app you don't want from /system/app directory of your phone. If your rom loads the system to ram memory, you also will have to delete the .apk from /system/ram/app directory or it will re-appear

I got root explore and did the following. clicked on root explorer then went into sysytem then app and deleted the facebook and twitter apk. They still appear in my apps though. Is there something elseim supposed to do?
Still no instructions on how to delete stock apps via root explorer? I found this on the thread to my rom but dont know how to install it. I got it on my desktop but now what? Can anyone help?
If you wish to gain an additional 27MB for apps in /data/ you can install the my new partition layout MAX[Build.v1.1.7]. This is NOT required and you can use any of my other partition layouts with build v1.1.7. However if MAX[v1.1.7] partition layout is used with older builds your Phone will not boot. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Thanks Fido for the reply. Why is the phone memory inaccessible in android phones for normal users? Is there any specific reason for this?
It doesn't happens in other platforms such as Symbian, Blackberry etc.
they do d ryt thing.. Coz, if u r a newbie.. U may mess wid ur system... So it s a way to protect system files frm newbies..

Just curious that if you have access to phone memory, what mess you can create?
You have access to phone memory freely in all the other platforms without rooting. Do you mean to say that the creators of those platforms are not doing right thing?
Android doesn't use the phone memory to save things, only for system stuff and installed apps. You cannot put music on your phone memory for example.
How to access your phone memory? You don't have to be rooted to view, only to change... You can just use bluetooth file manager or astro file manager to view (and copy). But you have to use another program to change things...

If you can access it, any application you install and run can access it without any limitation. This is good, if you know what you are doing, but it can be very harmful if you are not careful.

There is no way you can access the phone memory without rooting. Rooting is "the program" that changes things.
Thanks all,
I have mtorrent insalled on my phone. when i go to the option to add torrent, it shows me the directories that are not visible when I go to My Files folder. I have not rooted my phone. Are these directories the phone memory directories?
How can I determine if they are directories for accessing phone memory?
Shall I give out the name for the few?
One thing more: I am not getting e-mail notifications only for this thread even though I am subscribed to this thread whereas I am getting for all others. What may be the problem for this?

Which directories are those? On the memory card there are hidden files and folders whose name starts with a dot (.). The My Files app won't list these by default, but in the Settings menu you can enable it, and it is possible that in mtorrent this is the default setting.
The name of the directories are:
.info
cache
config
data
dev
efs
etc
lib
proc
res
sbin
sdcard - This is my SD Card folder that shows the contents of my memory card
sqlite_stmt_journals
sys
system
tmp
d
default.prop
fota.rc
init
init.apollo.rc
init.apollo.sh
init.rc
recovery.rc
system.prop
This is the root directory. Can you copy or create files here?
what do you mean by root directory? are you referring to this phone memory by this term...no, i can only access them...dont create or copy any file here..

This is the root of the entire file system, without rooting you can't modify its contents (except the /mnt/sdcard folder and subfolders ofcourse).
So just confirming that without rooting the phone, one can access the phone memory but cannot modify its contents. Am i correct?
yes, that's correct
so, why i am able to access this directory (phone memory) only from some apps and not from all the apps?
Also, is there any other way that I can access (not modify anything) phone memory if my phone is not rooted?
Also, if anyone has rooted his phone, what may be the purpose that is solved? As far as I know, such users can install some apps that need root access for the phone?
I mean to say, what may be the reason for which the user may want modify permission to phone memory apart from installing apps that require root access?
Use astro , u can access ur phone memory even if unrooted (atleast see those foldres )
Thanks only4omkar. I am able to do that already using ttorrent app. But my query is different...can anyone please respond to that?

Hello this is a guide to "move" you apps to your SD card for users with small Internal Storage
Update:There is now a faster way to do it.
After step 3 you just press the menu option on the top left corner and you press app analyzer.
This will show you an descending list of your apps sorted by their obb and file size.
Select the app you want to transfer it's obb from to SD (you can also choose to move its data)
Pair the data and you are done
Much faster
Much easier.
This GUIDE is for ROOTED PHONES ONLY it wont work with unrooted phones so please if you want to procced you MUST have a rooted phone
This method uses an app called Folder Mount (Free from Play Store) that allows the use to move large app files to external storage saving up internal space.
Instructions:
1) Download the App from Play Store called Folder Mount
App Link :https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.devasque.fmount
2) Once its installed open the app
3)Once the app is open it will ask you for root access press "GRANT"
!!! ATTENTION AS MENTIONED BEFORE THE APP WORKS ONLY ON ROOTED PHONES!!!
4)To use the app just press the "+" (cross) on the Top Right corner this will get you to Folder Pair Settings
5)In the "Name" slot you can name the Setting depending on what you want.
5.1) Example if you want to transfer the files from Dead Trigger https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.madfingergames.deadtrigger you can name it "Dead Trigger"
6) When you name the setting you press on "Source" this will get you to a file manager like screen where you choose the source of your file (MOST devices default source will be Android/obb/"game"
6.1)For Example the path for Dead Trigger on my phone (XPERIA SP) is (as shown in the Folder Mount App) /storage/sdcard0/Android/obb/com.madfingergames.deadtrigger
6.2) ATTENTION you must NOT sellect the WHOLE directory because that wont give you any editing or mounting options at all
6.3)ATTENTION when you are selecting the game file folder you must go into the folder (tap on the folder for example in this case com.madfingergames.deadtrigger) that will get you to the games directory so you are not choosing the whole game directory thus causing a big mess
7)When you sellect the games directory press the "check" button on the top right corner
8)After you press the cross a mesage will come up saying if you want the app to create a default destination folder
8.1) Press Yes and the app will create a default directory on your external SD (mine is /storage/sdcard1/Android/obb/com.madfingergames.deadtrigger)
8.2)Press No and choose your custom directory on your SD to save the folder in and then to apply the changes pless the "check" button
9)Afer you set up your destination folder just press the"check" button on the top right corner to finish
9.1) I would not suggest checking the " Exclude from media scan" box
10)After you pressed the "check" button it may show up a message telling you that your source directory is not empty (you already know that or why would you bother moving an empty folder) and by procceding it may overwrite some files.
Just press "Yes" on this.
11) Now it will go to the home screen and a message on the notification bar will tell you that files are being moved.
11.1)DO NOT START THE GAME TO CHECK the work is not done yet
12)Near the name you gave on step 5 you will see a thumbpin.
When the thumbpin is Green it means that the directory is mounted on your SD saving up Internal Storage Space
You can mount or unmount all your directories by pressing the thumbpin icon on the bottom right and bottom left corner (left -> mounts right -> unmounts)
13)after you mounted your game's directory test it out it should work
!!!!Here is a demo video to help you get started!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJLJZs7oqPE
Method Pros
1)Easy to use
2)Very fast transfering the files
3)Flexible (you can mount and unmount depending on wht you need)
4)Saves up a lot of time
Method Cons
1) The Free Version Supports only up to 3 pairs
Overall a great app for rooted phones
If you have any questions post them bellow
Thank you.
Nice, thankyou very much for your tutorial, was looking around for this one. By the way, when i mounted it, i checked to see if it played, it worked. But when i went on root explorer, how come the com.(what ever game) is still there in the Android/Obb folder? Doesn't it move since it moved to another location?
And also another quick question, if the game(any game) updates, does it update to the mounted folder?
Or do i start the whole process again with FolderMount?
Thank you Very Much

When you mount a directory Folder Mount keeps the old folder in the Android/obb/"folder" so when you delete the Pair it can transfer the game files to their original directory.
It is pretty much normal!
Also i forgot to add thanks for your kind words
