Epics on its way out. A discussion. - Epic 4G General

First off let me start off by saying that i deeply appreciate all the dev work that has been put into this phone. I've been rocking midNIGHT faithfully since it started and I've been extremely happy with it. I've tried all other roms but it seemed that there would always be one thing that steered me to try others. Now ever since I flashed 5.2 my phone has been doing some strange things. Things that i can't blame on the rom because when it's going it goes well. But from time to time I've been experiencing lag. Like the kind of lag that came along when ext4 was first out. Fb, the music player widget. The phone was miraculously draining battery while off... yes off. Went from 54% to completely dead overnight. Then I decided to reflash the rom. Same thing. I odin3d back to ec05 successfully. Everything seemed to be working pretty well on stock. (Surprised) decided to do a master reset along with formatting the sd card. Phone wouldn't boot past Sammy logo. Decided to odin3 again. Went through the process of flashing midnight again. When midnight finished flashing rebooted I was met with another infinite Sammy logo. Went back into cmw. Wiped and reflash to the same result. I'm assuming my phones on its way out. I'm back on ec05 and everything is running well... for now. I'm under the assumption that I've flashed my nand and its on its last breathe. What do you guys think?

Stay away from EC05 like its the plague. The only thing you need to odin is the modem + flash custom rom. IMHO, the EC05 Sprint dropped was a POS.

Yes, please, because I've not noticed a single problem with mine, and I'm stock.

I don't think your epic is on its last breath. You probably had some corrupt data. Also u probably had an app nit letting g your phone sleep properly. I Doubt your nand is about shot. Sometimes all the custom stuff and apps don't play well together.

Sometimes you just have some bad hardware that doesn't show up until the right circumstance, as well. This is still electronics.

I guess so. Maybe it has to do with the fact this unit was a refurb.

Did you reformatting your sd card in your pc before you flashed Midnight. Id try reflashing again with a fresh sd card and a completely wiped device.

I had a similar situation happen to me last night. The battery seemed to be draining faster than usual. Things started lagging like crazy. I was on stock ec05 rooted with cwm 2510. I noticed something was wrong when the phone would turn itself back on if I shut it off. I had to battery pull. As far as I could get it was to Samsung screen. I got it into recovery and somehow managed to get it to boot regularly. I then proceeded to uninstall everything except the bare essential tools needed to troubleshoot. After a shutdown or reboot it still acted the same. I went back into recovery after battery pull and wiped everything three times. That still didn't help. I tried wiping a bunch more times and restoring a fresh install of di18 and ec05 rooted and both froze at samsung. I tried one last backup I had, because those two failed, and everything worked after that. I have no theories on what happened. I wasn't near a computer for a few hours then because I was still at work. The restore I did that worked is still running as I type this and the battery is acting "normal".
This phone has only had stock rooted on it and never been overclocked. Gremlins...

lol DK28 before that was an absolute mess. There's a reason why ACS didn't even try and make something of it.

I think you should leave all these roms alone. I had the same exact issues with my phone between flashing themes and roms I constantly got bootloops, fcs, and freezing. I tried everything. Reflashing, Odin, wiping...literally everything. So I said forget it...
Went to stock rooted ec05 on ext4...removed what I don't want...and couldn't be happier. Phone is fast, responsive, battery lasts about 10 hours with heavy use...the perfect phone. Much respect to all the devs and their work...but the roms I tried seemed to have more bugs than I needed. I tried syndicate, midnight and viper. The custom kernals gave me issues too but those seem to be screwing everyone's phones.

Yea It may be the kernels not playing well or something. I'm on stock ec05. If I want ext4 all I gotta do is run cwm, let it convert, then reboot correct?

Every Epic is like a snow flake; in that you never know what you're gonna get.
It is frustrating for some that see others; using the same device, running custom ROMs with little to no issues.
I got my Epic last Christmas, after a couple of weeks reading here on XDA I settled on midNIGHT as my ROM of choice (2.5 at that time). I've used 2.9,3.3, 4.1,5 and 5.2.
I've have experienced no issues with the ROM. Now I make it a point to start from scratch and even reinstall my apps and set them up again. Never restoring ANYTHING - I just noticed those that do restore even just apps and data experience waaaaaaay more issues. To me it actually takes far less time reinstalling then it does trying to figure out what minor data restore caused the ROM to lose its mind.
The great thing about Android is that you have CHOICES !!!!! unlike iOS or Crackberry The devs are awesome; you literally can have a new phone when ever you want by changing ROMs or themes. It is too COOL

Yeah midnight ROM is the way to go. The one thing I had to do was extra leg work to stop the autosyncing in the background and dimming my screen and what not to make the battery last longer.

I'm truly genuinely starting to believe my epicis ****ting the bed. I flashed acs yesterday and the phone was running like a dream. This is after being on eb13/ext4/visionkernel1.0. (Which was crap)
Anywho I boot up my epic after a full nights charge and was hit with a force close. First, I use launcher7, and it crashes at boot guaranteed everytime. This is normal? It happened on midNIGHT and stock. So then I'm hit with a framework crash. (Android.acore?) And (something.gapps). The phone has been flat out crashing and freezing on me which has never happened before forcing me to pull the battery. Than I was doing some browsing and I got a freeze but this time the screen went really bright with a yellow tint and an artifact white line across the screen. Oh ****. Then on one of the other crashes the screen went completely black except for a few pixels on the bottom which remained red and blue. I've never had these issues until I started this thread. I'm lucky I haven't crashed yet...
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App

Also email crashed on me a few times. I can trigger a freeze by visiting the same website. its the ctdol and it happens with both stock browser and dolphin. My epics gonna off itself!!!
Edit
I also wiped and reflashed. I just tried to set a wallpaper and got another dead freeze.

guys with flawless GPS's. Do you leave your wifi on and connected? That was the only time my GPS failed me (after about a day of leaving wifi on my GPS would not lock at all and required a reboot)
On 2.1 (stock and custom ROMS) GPS was just about worthless for me. This past week I did a factory reset and flashed back to Stock 2.1 DI18 and got the GPS to work. I've run about 4 or 5 different 2.2 betas now and GPS keeps getting better. On Quantum DK17 w/ DK17 modem GPS gets a very accurate lock in seconds. I do not use the network location feature.
@houkah - I haven't noticed a difference in my GPS stability/performance with wifi enabled or disabled. I've used it both ways on the 2.2 betas and all seems well.
im on a 2.2 beta rom and i have no gps issues at all. i get a lock in no time
I've been running DK17 for a little over 36 hours now. I have yet to see any evidence of the cache bug. I've used Maps and Navigation several times yesterday and this morning without any issues. My WiFi is always on but I leave network location turned off. I get locks outdoors within half a second and within 2-6 meters. Indoors takes a little longer and is less accurate.
On any of the 2.1 ROMs, GPS would work fine for a day, then I would have to reboot to refresh the cache.

Which ROM are you using now? I think this phone is very particular about how things are flashed to it. I've read several threads about people jumping through all these hoops to get GPS working.
I'm running the ACS version of Froyo right now. I'll lay out the steps I used to flash it in case it might help someone get it working or figure out why it's not.
I was running Baked Snack 1.6 when I started.
1) I flashed the DK17 modem through Odin.
2) Next I put a fully charged battery in and booted into recovery to wipe data, cache, and dalvik.
3) While in recovery, I flashed the acs froyo rom and reboot.
4) On first boot, I let the phone sit for a few, then reboot again and log into my account to sync contacts and download all my apps. I did not restore data from my previous ROM other than game data for Asphalt and Angry Birds.

I'm well aware of the GPS cache bug, as I've experienced it myself. As a part time delivery driver, I can't tell you how annoying it is to have to reboot the phone while going down the road looking for an address. I am simply stating that since flashing DK17 almost 2 days ago, I have yet to encounter it again. All scenarios that triggered the issue before have failed to reproduce it now.
Also remember, this is not the final release.
I flashed DK17 yesterday, and GPS has been great so far. I didn't even have to do any of the trickiness that was necessary for me to even get GPS in DJ29. Now I get a time to first fix of 3-5 seconds and 7+ satellites in less than 10 seconds. I have had my wifi on since reflashing yesterday and haven't seen any cache issues, yet. I'll keep testing and see if it gives me any trouble.

GB Impressions

Ok, aside from the bootloop issue upon install, I have to say so far, not bad. The blur aspect is definitely better, however I dont care for it any more now than I did before. The color scheme is quite visually appealing. Very much like lucid steel theme for fission. I would prefer the scheme from the fission gb theme but this is absolutely an improvement over the stock froyo appearance.
Overall system speed seems to be somewhat improved, and there is a big issue w/ launcher pro which sucks. with launcher pro there is some heavy lag in transitions and the general feel of the phone is kind of clunky and choppy. Without launcherpro, phone tends to run quite smooth. no status bar controls kinda sucks, and the reduced screen density w/o launcher pro is also kind of a downer, but overall im not going to complain. Its definitely progress.
One big downside I noticed after 2 days is battery life is very hit or miss. On fission 2.6.1, i was making it easily 1.5-2 days on a single charge. Yesterday I made it home with 40% left, today I was at 10% when i left work. I can attribute this heavily to Blur, but this is definatley somethign that a new fission or UD build should fix
I have to say that since the devs seemed to have abandoned the Fission project, I haven't looked back since upgrading to GB Blur. it's snappy and attractive and while it still has alot of the blur bloat i hate, root + ti backup makes things a little more manageable.
so far, i've managed to remove teh global unplug, task manager, the blur text messenger, backup asssistant and city id. my battery life is probably slightly better than it was on fission, depending on what i'm doing (games seem to destroy it).
we still have to recognize that this IS a leaked version and there are still some misses with the build. data services randomly failing, inability to make calls/send texts and the weird keyboard backlight issue. other than that, i've been pretty pleased.
I just upgraded yesterday and I am very happy with it

Did you see something else where he said he was specifically working on GB Fission?
I think GB for the D2 makes some major improvements, but I can't give up liberty for it. Just have to wait and see if Liberty GB comes out.

yeah i thought that topic came up when the sdk was made available, but nothing ever really came to light. i feel like after p3droid's recent tweets/posts, etc., the landscape has been drying up.
I got the impression from what p3 said that the devs were under some fire as google seems to be having second thoughts about open source, as well as unpaid tethering raising some eyebrows with teh carriers, which is understandable.
Hopefully once things get ironed out we'll see some ovens refire and some cool stuff gettin rolled out.
I'm still kind of split and definitely agree that gaming on gb is a battery killer in a huge way. Overall battery life is good, however i've had a few days where it just sucked down. Ive been off charge since 6am, 12 hours later with minimal-moderate useage i'm at 70%, however there have been days where I have used the phone way less and been getting charge warnings by 2pm.
Hopefully the official release will solve the rest of these issues.
All I can say is that I hope some custom ROMs are available for Droid 2 Gingerbread soon, because what I have now is buggy to the point of being frustrating. Besides being a memory hog, I sometimes lose my data connection for no apparent reason and my keyboard backlight doesn't always work. Also, even when I do have a data connection, my phone has problems loading web pages much of the time.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
Oh, and I forgot to mention that the screen sometimes randomly shuts off without warning.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
if you have an issue with the screen randomly shutting off try unchecked the in pocket detection setting. I found this was way to sensitive and would consistently shut my screen off in dimly lit areas.
yeah, battery life has become sketchy, like one day i'll make it through the day with 60% left with moderate useage, similar useage next day i'll be charging by noon. USB reboots have reared their ugly head in the last 48 hours to the point where im charging off of the wall outlet and seriously considering sbfing back to fission 2.6.1
To this point I haven't had any major problems whatsoever ...
Only thing is browser sometimes crashes ...batt life is amazing!
9hr shift on work barely drops to 70% with wifi always turned on moderate txt n web

SIgh WTF getting whitescreen ....cant get back to CWMR, tried every thing....wtf ..... is this bootlooping? NO MATTER WHAT I do can not get back into recovery.
I have a trick to acces any files but most of them seem corrupted? Im only guesing as there is now a "?" by the file icon.
I tried loading bootsrap recovery
phone appeared bricked. rebooted and again cannot get into recovery.
I laready had 2.3 rom ...did I miss something? IM usually pretty good on this stuff. Modded my hd2 and rooted my g2x no issues....what dee hell is dis sheot
(mods move if I am posting in wrong section)
SOB me having bad day...lol...just realised this is the dev thread not general...I suck .....POINTS!!!!!
EDIT:
AH HA!!!! I was able to get to CWMR by an interesting method! I had previusly DL mini task manager(took it off the market for some reason) and thats THE ONLY ap that was working!
so anyways in the info bar at top it was showing mini task coming up .... Somehow it was acting as a backup! (has any one else experienced this?) so I long tapped on bootstrap rec icon and voila! it asked if I wanted to go into bootstrap and of course I did and .....yes!!! thank you cwm i got to the recovery green screen!!
FIrst I tried Tpro recovery....would not work....tried loading bootstrapzip....nothing...so....I figure since all my shizzle is backed up through my google act I did a factory reset, wipe data, and redid the new GB hack.
VOILA! it loaded ! no bootloop! just had to re-register phone and accounts!
so I leave you with this narcissistic picture of myself....

Hey everyone,
I've been running GB and ZS for about a week now. The one thing that I noticed was that there isn't anywhere where you can turn off mobile data? Maybe I'm blind, but it's not in wireless and networks? Any ideas? If not, oh well. I still think I found something in GB that's keeping me from going back to 2.2. It's just as stable as 2.2 only faster! Anyways, cheers all!

Serious lagging...... rooted/no custom ROM

Quick brief:
I am still on 2.1, but I am rooted.......but not using any custom ROM/kernels. I mainly wanted to root to rid of the bloatware. I am rooted, and have CW installed. I used RootExplorer to rid of the bloatware. I have one ongoing issue, and 2 getting progressively worse.
1) My battery has progressively started to wear down faster. I've had my phone over a year now, so I went ahead and purchased a new factory battery. I have properly cycled the battery as you should with a new one (kill it dead, let it charge fully.....did this a couple times). I have not noticed much more of an extended life with the new battery, over the original.
2) I have been using LauncherPro since I rooted. I understand a custom ROM would probably run a ton better, but I barely was able to root my phone successfully by myself.....so I am not sure I want to try flashing it. I really like the customizable features LauncherPro has. Recently though, the phone has gotten really laggy. I notice it most when using the text feature. I had Handcent installed, which I downloaded on the phone at day 1.....so I figured it was that app hanging up. I uninstalled it, and am using the default messaging service. Sometimes its fairly quick, but it still hangs up......even using the default. I also tried DL'ing a new Launcher, and tried Regina. It was lightning fast, but after a few hours....it wouldn't run properly. I assigned it to run as default, but after 3-4 hours.......it would prompt me on which launcher to use.......so I uninstalled it. Now I am still using the default TW launcher.
3) When I rooted, I deleted a few apps that are critical to run nav......like text to speech. I reinstalled them and got my nav working again.....but 90% of the time when I use nav......it takes the upwards of 10-15 minutes for it to find my location. Wtf? My phone is super hot by then too, so obviously my battery drops significantly.
Anyone help out with any sorts of resolution? Fwiw I don't have any apps running that I can see in task manager. I also have cache cleaner......so that is emptied regularly. When I started getting laggy, I installed the cache cleaner.....and it seemed to help alot. Then it got right back to as laggy as it was before......
I'm stumped.
Well, 2.2 came out a while ago and 2.3 is on its way. I say upgrade to 2.2 then to MIUI.

Oh ok, thanks for clearing it up.......sorry for the noobiness.
I have a friend that has flashed his Galaxy multiple times.....so I am going to get him to flash my Fascinate. I'll find the DL for that one, and show him.
Anyone else have any idea why I could be so laggy, so sudden? Also, I noticed lag when using PowerAmp as well.
Not a clue, haven't been on 2.1 in such a long time. 2.3.5 here. But usually doing a full wipe/reinstall solves any lag issues. As for the gps, well, it sucks tremendously on our fascinates. I suggest the MIUI rom and glitch kernel. I get great battery life, no lag, 10 sec gps lock, and so much more

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1252871
i also flashed the latest gingerbread radio and im having good results
I'll definitely research those mentioned.
Just seems odd my phone all of a sudden force closes on alot of apps I've used since day 1.

Did you use Super-1-Click-Root to root your phone? It has a nasty side-effect of lagging up the phone post-root (at least in my, and others' experience)
Try turning off your phone, pulling out the battery for a minute, putting it back in and rebooting. That fixed mine.

Nope, I did it using one of the methods in the sticky in this forum. Thanks for the suggestion though.
I'd suggest following the steps to flash completely back to stock FIRST using pentafive's rom here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178544) and ODIN (your friend will know this if they've flashed a lot of phones). Do not use PST, it doesn't always work. Once you get fully back to stock, flash whatever new rom, radio, kernel, etc that you want (see here for a good list... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1013312).
I was having a lot of force closes after rooting (manually via adb) and a flash back to stock using penta's ROM corrected them all. I then flashed on to a new ROM and have had zero problems so far.
maybe get 2.2 or 2.3 and get voodoo?
Update:
Haven't flashed a ROM yet, but I got bored and wanted to try some easy things. I popped the cover off and took the SD card out, and rebooted the phone. Fast as lightning on reboot, with the SD card out. I stuck the card back in......and it was fine. It went 3-4 days, then all of a sudden starting lagging again really bad. Mind you, before I just pulled the card out......I clear my cache, don't have any apps running besides the launcher and whatever app I am trying to run, and have also rebooted with/without removing the battery many times......to no avail. So after 3-4 days, when it got laggy again......I took the SD card out and rebooted, and its fast as lightning again.
Corrupt SD card possibly?

Anyone have a suggestion? This has happened many times now, it keeps repeating itself.
Phone starts lagging, removed SD card and reboot, fast as lightning. After 1-2 days, lagging again. Repeat.
If your SD was corrupted the phone would let you know, or things would start disappearing from the card.
This is the nightmare that we fassy owners have got to go through till we find the right Rom and tweak. Gingerbread has made this phone way better whether you use a TW or an Mtd Rom. Do some research and try one of them
Don't be afraid, it's fun
PWGB,TKSGB10-10, adren shot xix, honeycomb2.03, ec09 radio.

Thanks for the reply. I am definitely not afraid to change ROM's, I'm just afraid to do it myself. I'll be doing it in the next week or two, a friend from work is going to flash it for me.
As for the laggy times though......I can't see how the card isn't the culprit. Every single time my phone gets laggy, when I pull the SD card it.....its lightning. A few times also, when the phone is starting to lag......I'll open my gallery and its usually all jumbled up, or it won't show me all of my pictures.
Maybe I need to reformat my SD card? Can I do that through my phone somehow?

Droid Incredible slow down after midnight

Don't know what the hell is going on but it's so frustrating I am about to throw my phone out the window. Recently I upgraded to stock plus v3.01 ROM and also Ext4 4 ALL kernel since I was running into the dreaded data/data memory full issue. Everything seems to be working fine until recently the phone would slow to a crawl right around midnight, I would be watcing a flash video clip before midnight, then right at 12, everything just slow down and nothing I do would resolve this...I can reboot, take the battery out..etc..phone would still be super slow, pretty much the same way until next morning. GoLauncher EX would crash all the time during this time as well, is if there's some kind of ghost process running in the background sucking up all the resources. I checked Mybackup and doesn't look like there's any schedule backup service...so I am pulling my hair out still don't know what's wrong. Anyone else experienced this before, any idea what can be causing this?
This happened to me when i was using that same rom! What i did was just install a different rom.
Try looking on Ebay for a new flux-capacitor for it they always go bad
I had this ROM too... it was cool, but a battery hog.... Back to CM7 Nightly's.... shouldn't have left to begin with....
1. does not belong in this forum
2. try asking the developer, or even in the ROM's forum
Too much porn. Those midnight shows will do it.

Thanks for the feedback..looks like the ROM is the culprit..time to upgrade to something else
Cool story bro
CM7 nightly
Haven't had any problems with Stock+ regarding this issue....
definitely very strange.....
Very strange issue. Has it been reported to the ROMs dev?

I'm running it and it's working at least as well as CM9 (wifi working, a bit smoother, ...). There is only one problem : even with the USB plugged in, the battery keeps dropping down !
So Wi-Fi does work? What does and doesn't work?

Not Working: Sound, video acceleration, mic, camera. Overall the rom seems pretty smooth besides the main bugs of course. Make a backup if you flash. Wifi seems to be working fine and the guy in the other thread that said charging was messed up must of had a bad flash or something cause charging works just fine here

Yeah, dont keep it on your TouchPad. Apparently the guy in the other thread left it overnight and woke up to a dead TouchPad. I guess not charging when plugged in is a missing feature in this. Thats why its a preview though. Meant more for flashing it, playing with it for a bit then going back to whatever you had before.

From what I understand, no hardware acceleration (or at least not fully) so things like games/YouTube dont work, no sound, no mic, no camera and I guess it doesnt charge when plugged in. Probably a list of other issues as well.
I was still running into some minor glitches after flashing cm10, so I restored back to the 7/30 nightly, which is running just right for me.
The glitches are minor, and I would probably use this if my 7/30 build wasn't close to perfect.
Again, thanks to the cyanogen guys that have made this possible. I look forward to installing cm10 after a few of the rough edges are taken care off.
Edit : Thanks to Big Simon for getting this thread started - go click the thanks button for him.

Idk man, shaffe.jr, is pretty much confirming my problem. When installing I FDR, formatted system and cache, installed, fixed permissions and booted. Just like I do with all fresh installs. I left it plugged in overnight, because it was showing a charge and I wanted to play with it more in the morning. I woke up with it still on, but showing 0 on battery. I thought that it couldn't be true, because charging symbol was still on. So I unplugged it, as soon as I took it out of the power input, it shut off and is now going through the whole mess of not recognizing charger. I know how to fix that (leave charger in anyways, and allow it to trickle charge slowly for many hours, then immediately boot to CWR).
If anyone else is noticing that problem, please speak up. I don't want this to happen to anyone else!
As far as smoothness, as someone stated in the Q&A, HW acceleration doesn't work. So, you're not going to experience project butter. There's pretty much no point in flashing this yet. I really regret not immediately reverting back to my backup.

For what I've seen , sound, mic and camera are not working. Hardware acceleration is partially working : global UI is a lot smoother, games are no so fast.
Battery seems to be charging : when plugged on AC percentage are going up.
Nevertheless, I will switch back to the last CM9 nightly.

Mine working smooth and fast other than that was mention not working I am happy with its current performance. Congrats to all devs..

meanwhile im still on the latest 0208 nightly.
Rom isn't smooth more when kernel 3.x coming. Frame buffer will work perfect only on Kernel 3.x
Just pointing out mine is also charging..and on touchstone. Thanks guys

So I was thinking of trying this out just to see what its like. All I do is wipe data, cache and dalvik, flash rom and gapps, then when I want to go back to cm9, restore my nandroid? When I restore my nandroid, do I have to factory reset then restore nandroid? I'm just asking because with my phone, there's more steps when going from one kernel to another. Don't know if that all applies here though.
Edit: never mind. Doing some research. Lol

When I flashed it I did a nandroid backup, formatted the system partition, flashed rom and gapps, wiped dalvik and cache partitions, fixed permissions then rebooted just to see what would happen, it booted no problem and nearly all of my apps ran fine except ICS Browser+ for obvious reasons, then restored backup and everything is working just the way I left it.
BTW I'm using TWRP 2.2.0 recovery which formats the partitions as it restores them, can't remember if CWM does that.

OK. I was watching a video where he used ACMEinstaller. Maybe if I don't want to go that route, I'll try our TWRP. Heard it was pretty nice anyway. I'm not sure if CWR formats partitions either.
Just to be sure, this IS based on the 3.0x kernel, correct?
